Chapter 1 — Brother, I'll Take You Home
"Send them away!"
A majestic figure stood alone on the bow of a dragon-shaped battleship.
Facing numerous enemy ships, he slowly raised his right hand and brought it down.
In an instant, the cannons roared, and the screams echoed through the sky...
For a long time, the river ran red!
Countless enemy ships sank to the bottom of the sea, bodies floating for miles!
"The Dragon Marshal is mighty!"
The soldiers shouted, their expressions excited.
Facing the cruisers chasing them like madmen, the man known as the Dragon King, Huo Chen, stood with his hands on his back, unmoving.
Facing the hail of bullets, his expression was as cold as ice, without any hint of emotion.
When he watched his childhood friend and brother being shattered by enemy cannonballs in front of him, he completely lost his mind.
With no more reservations, he abandoned the main force of the dragon army, not even taking the escort ships, and sailed alone into the territory of the rebels.
Intending to use himself as bait, he planned to lure the rebels into a trap with his own strength, a bold ambition that could defy the heavens.
But it was a life-or-death situation!
Yet the soldiers of the dragon ship, not one of them backed down, willing to sacrifice their lives to follow the Dragon Marshal.
Because this man was their faith.
The undefeated war god!
Boom!
In an instant, the entire sea area seemed like the descent of a thunder god.
The sea, which was calm just moments ago, suddenly churned up waves over ten feet high.
Countless submarines that had long been hidden under the sea lay in ambush, each aiming to chase and attack the cruiser, launching missiles simultaneously.
The flames soared, and blood flowed like a river.
In just a few minutes, the main force of the rebels was completely wiped out!
"My brother, I have avenged your great revenge for you."
It was not until this moment that a hint of sadness appeared in Huo Chen's eyes.
He had sworn to slaughter the rebels and avenge his brother with their flesh and blood.
And now, he had done it.
"Connect to headquarters." Turning his gaze away from the sinking warships in the distance, Huo Chen gave the order.
Countless soldiers rushed to the deck, their eyes filled with reluctance.
They knew that the day they least wanted to see had arrived.
All kneeling down in unison, they pleaded, "Our Dragon Army cannot be without a leader. Please reconsider, Dragon Marshal!"
Huo Chen looked back at his densely packed subordinates, his gaze unwavering, his voice resolute, "The Western Sea is now under control. I will resign from the position of Dragon Marshal. My mind is made up. Take care!"
A piece of news spread worldwide.
The leader of the Dragon Army, the undefeated Dragon Marshal who had dominated the nine oceans, retired from service and disappeared without a trace.
At this moment, on a plane flying to Changding City.
Huo Chen, dressed in casual clothes, stood tall, holding an urn containing his brother's ashes, covered with the military uniform his brother had once worn.
His eyes filled with sorrow.
Remembering the laughter of their childhood, the memories vivid in his mind, they had fought side by side on the battlefield, braving the bullets and shells, only to turn into a handful of dust to protect themselves.
"Rest in peace, from now on your parents are like my own!"
Huo Chen gently closed his eyes, his heart filled with turbulent iron and blood.
Sitting next to him was a fat man, who glanced at Huo Chen's ash box that he never let go of, his fat face full of displeasure.
"Can you put this thing in the overhead bin? It's so close to me, it's really unlucky!"
Huo Chen's eyes remained closed, a hint of coldness bursting out, but then he restrained himself.
Without saying much, he stood up with the ash box and moved to the aisle.
"Can't you hear me?"
"If you put it up there, what's the use of moving it a couple of times! Seeing that thing just annoys me, can't people even sit on a plane in peace?"
The fat man was relentless.
The woman next to him also spoke up, "What a terrible trip, encountering ashes as soon as we leave. How unlucky!"
"Let me tell you, our friend Old Zhang is worth billions. You soldiers are really getting on my nerves. Believe it or not, I'll scatter the ashes in your hands!"
Swish!
With these words, Huo Chen's anger exploded.
His eyes widened like a tiger's, crimson as blood.
His gaze, full of life and death, was firmly fixed on the fat man and his companion.
"What... what are you doing? Do you soldiers still want to fight? Try touching me!"
The fat man was covered in cold sweat, his scalp tingling, his fierce words masking his fear.
This one look scared him out of his wits.
He had never seen such a fierce and intimidating gaze, making his legs tremble. But with the beauty in front of him, he couldn't back down.
"You should be grateful. If it weren't for sending my brother home without bloodshed, you would be dead!"
One sentence, as cold as ice, cutting to the bone.
The temperature suddenly dropped, and many people shivered simultaneously.
"The plane is about to take off, sir. Please take your seat."
At that moment, two flight attendants rushed over with an air marshal.
Seeing Huo Chen standing tall in the aisle, they couldn't help but ask, "What's going on?"
"Comrade, I reported this kid for carrying an urn and threatening to kill me. I am now suffering from mental issues due to the scare."
The chubby man wiped the sweat off his face and twisted the truth, "I am a VIP of your airline. If he dares to speak to me like this, you must deal with him."
"Otherwise, I will complain to your superiors and make you lose your job!"
The chubby man's shock subsided, and he became even more aggressive.
The air marshal's expression changed upon hearing this, looking at Huo Chen, "Is this true?"
"Come with me and explain the situation clearly. It is peacetime now. If you keep talking about killing people, aren't you afraid of embarrassing your group of soldiers?"
Although his words seemed fair, they were actually biased towards the capitalist, siding with the chubby man.
Standing on the moral high ground, striking against the other party.
The passengers who were close enough to know the truth showed indignation, but they dared not speak out directly, fearing trouble.
More people showed disgust, unwilling to be in the same room as human ashes.
Feudal superstition prevailed, causing people to reject it from the bottom of their hearts.
Huo Chen looked around, his gaze finally falling back on the air marshal's face, cold and stern.
"In this box lies a hero who guards peace!"
"He left home at a young age, went to the battlefield, and sacrificed his body to protect his country."
"For the nation, for the people, for his comrades, he faced warships with his flesh and blood, forever giving his life."
"Now, he wants to go home, but isn't even worthy of taking a plane?"
The strong tone of voice, like bullets, shot into the hearts of everyone present.
Instantly, there was silence in the room, not a sound to be heard.
After a while, the expressions of everyone gradually changed.
Those who had shown disgust, their faces turned red with shame, bowing their heads low to the ground.
Especially the air marshals and flight attendants, their faces turned pale, their eyes filled with guilt, glaring fiercely at the fat man and his companion, gritting their teeth.
It was them who almost made him out to be the villain, tarnishing the sacred relics of the hero.
Just then, a young boy stood up and, with an imperfect military salute, paid his respects to Huo Chen.
This gesture spread like wildfire, and the adults couldn't sit still.
Following suit, they stood up and saluted, their expressions solemn.
A solemn and dignified atmosphere quickly filled the entire cabin.
Countless people had tears in their eyes, their hearts surging.
Sending off the hero on his journey home!
Soon, several air marshals boarded the plane and escorted the fat man and his companion off.
The plane, carrying the ashes of Huo Chen and his brothers, soared into the sky.
The cabin fell into silence.
Outside, the sunset on the edge of the clouds was as red as the moment of tragedy.
Chapter 2 — Returning Home
In a dilapidated courtyard on the outskirts of Changding City, a blend of urban and rural areas.
Huo Chen gazed at the tattered couplet, the rusty door handle, tears welling up in his eyes, his hand trembling.
He had conquered the nine oceans, was invincible in the world, undefeated in countless battles.
He had moved with ease through a hail of bullets, his reputation shaking the heavens, commanding the rivers and seas with a wave of his hand.
But now, his hand trembled, unable to knock on the door.
Tao Yue was his childhood friend, growing up together in the mud. Though not blood-related, they were as close as brothers.
An orphan, he was taken in by Tao Yue's parents and treated as their own.
Twelve years ago, they had joined the army together, setting lofty goals and vowing to conquer the nine oceans.
But his dear brother sacrificed himself to save him.
Leaving him alone to return with the last memento.
He didn't know how to explain.
After a few moments of hesitation, Huo Chen finally swallowed his sorrow and knocked thrice on the long-forgotten iron gate.
"Coming, coming, who is it?"
His mother's voice echoed from inside, aged but familiar.
Creak!
The iron gate soon opened, revealing an old man with white hair.
With a face like an orange peel weathered by wind and frost, her cloudy eyes unable to clearly see the world's changes.
Time had mercilessly left its mark, preserving the past.
She was Tao Yue's birth mother, Huo Chen's adoptive mother, a benefactor.
"Are you... are you Xiaochen?"
Mother Tao's face showed confusion at first, then recognition as she spotted the mole next to General Huo Chen's ear, her cloudy eyes lighting up.
After twelve years, Huo Chen had transformed from a green youth into a legendary dragon marshal.
War and suffering had altered his appearance completely.
Only the mole remained unchanged.
"Auntie, it's me, Xiaochen, I'm back."
Huo Chen's nose tingled, tears filling his eyes, his voice trembling like silk.
Years of endless battles had almost erased Auntie's appearance.
Yet she recognized him instantly.
"Old man, come out quickly, Xiaochen is back!"
Mother Tao exclaimed excitedly, wiping away tears from Huo Chen's resolute face, her gaze not on the urn covered by a military uniform.
Instead, she looked past Huo Chen, searching with hope: "You're back, then Xiaoyue should be back too, right?"
This scene tore at Huo Chen's heart, leaving him devastated.
Thud, thud, thud...
The sound of hurried footsteps drew near, Father Tao running barefoot towards them.
From a distance, he called out, "Xiaochen, my son, you're finally back..."
Thud!
Before he could reach them, Huo Chen knelt at the door.
"What... what are you doing?"
The two elderly people were stunned, wanting to help him up but frozen in place.
"Dad, Mom, I have been unfilial, I failed to protect Xiaoyue, so I brought him back home."
Huo Chen opened his military uniform, revealing the urn beneath.
Thud, thud, thud!
Three consecutive knocks, tears flowing uncontrollably like a broken dam.
Mother Tao's face paled, her body swaying, nearly falling.
Father Tao aged ten years in an instant, his spirit dazed, lost.
It wasn't until a few minutes later, when he steadied himself, that he helped Huo Chen up, tears streaming down his face as he held the urn.
People are like candles in the wind.
The sight of a white-haired person sending off a black-haired person is truly heart-wrenching.
They had once been full of hope, watching their son make a name for himself and protect the family and the country.
Now, all that remained was a handful of ashes, their hearts shattered and filled with sorrow.
Their hopes in life had been completely destroyed.
Simply being able to stand was their final act of perseverance, their last display of strength.
Huo Chen supported the two elders, his eyes filled with guilt.
"Uncle, Aunt!"
"Xiaoyue died protecting me, it's all my fault."
"Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on. I have retired and returned home to care for my parents!"
His voice was hoarse, but his determination was unwavering. With those three bows, he made his intentions clear.
Guiding the two elders back to the main hall, he gently placed the urn down.
Father Tao's voice trembled as he inquired, "Did Xiaoyue bring shame upon himself?"
"Faithful until the end, unwavering in loyalty!"
Huo Chen gritted his teeth, suppressing the grief in his heart.
Seemingly influenced by his resolve, Mother Tao's cries grew even more intense.
The room was filled with mourning, the atmosphere heavy and oppressive.
Suddenly, the large iron gate shook violently, kicked open by someone and crashing against the wall with a loud bang.
A burly man, accompanied by several young men with fierce expressions, swaggered in.
Their faces were stern, their eyes piercing.
"You knew I was coming, mourning for the dead?"
"Have you prepared the money, you two old farts? If I don't get it today, I'll tear down your house!"
Mrs. Tao's face turned pale with fear, full of panic.
"We have no money, you bunch of scammers!" Mr. Tao clenched his teeth.
Nothing could be more heart-wrenching than the loss of their only son. Even in his absence, he was still afraid of these thugs?
"What money?" Ho Chen coldly eyed the burly man, asking in a deep voice.
The burly man scrutinized him, then inquired, "Still not paying up, bringing a soldier to support you?"
"Old man, do you think we would be intimidated by this kid? No matter who shows up today, if we don't get the money, we will deal with them!"
With that, he glanced into the hall and saw Tao Yue's photo on the urn.
He sneered, "Oh, isn't that your soldier son? Deceased now?"
"Farmers like you, with no heirs, are the backbone of the country."
"Good riddance!"
This heartless mockery displayed no hint of humanity.
The two elders trembled, nearly fainting from anger. Through gritted teeth, Mr. Tao said, "Zhao Bin! You scammers who cheat elderly people out of their money for investments, you've already taken everything and now you want more!"
"You are too despicable, you will not meet a good end!"
"Too despicable?" The burly man sneered, "We warned you from the start, investments come with risks."
"You wanted to make money to buy a house and marry off your son, now that you've lost, do you expect us to bail you out?"
"Furthermore, your son is no longer alive, he doesn't need the money anymore!"
All their investments were scams, they never actually invested the elderly people's money, but squandered it.
Once it was gone, they returned to extort more.
After Zhao Bin finished speaking, he kicked over a stool and shouted, "If you don't pay up, believe me, I'll take your lives as payment!"
Mr. Tao was so frightened that he took a few steps back, gritting his teeth, "Go ahead, kill us..."
He was already in despair, and for him, death was a relief.
"Fine, you're not even afraid of death, huh? I'll grant your wish!"
Zhao Bin's face was fierce, his eyes filled with malice, as he cursed, "You despicable scum, always spouting nonsense. I see you're tired of living!"
With that, he lifted his foot and kicked directly at Mr. Tao.
Smack!
At that moment, Zhao Bin was suddenly sent flying back more than three meters, crashing heavily into the wall.
No one could see what had occurred.
Zhao Bin was completely bewildered, his eyes bulging, struggling to get up, but he felt a dark shadow pass before him, a pair of eyes filled with murderous intent staring at him intensely.
"What... what do you want!"
Locked in a stare, Zhao Bin felt a chill run down his spine, fear rising uncontrollably in his heart.
Huo Chen's face was as cold as ice, his eyes burning with a fierce determination.
He lifted his hand and struck Zhao Bin on the face.
The sharp sound shocked all those in attendance.
"Showing disrespect to a hero!"
"Showing disrespect to an elder!"
"Violating the law, committing fraud and extortion!"
"I will show you the proper way to behave on behalf of your parents!"
Chapter 3 — Childhood Sweethearts
One sentence, one slap.
After four sentences, Zhao Bin's face swelled on both sides like a pig's head, and two of his front teeth were knocked out.
Blood covered his face.
He had a look of horror, as if his soul had left his body.
Facing Huo Chen, he didn't even have the right to fight back; being beaten was an honor.
"Go back and tell your boss, I will personally visit him in three days."
"Now, take your people and leave!"
After delivering the slap, Huo Chen stopped, looking like a god, and no one dared to meet his gaze.
If it weren't for his brothers' spirits in front of him, Zhao Bin would undoubtedly be dead today.
Just because he didn't want to kill, doesn't mean he wouldn't.
His foster parents were deceived, and this matter would never be easily forgiven.
Everything would be addressed after the funeral.
Several young men saw their leader being beaten into a mess and ran away in fear, carrying him to safety.
"Xiao Chen, you've been through a lot..."
Tao's mother's eyes still held pain.
If it weren't for Huo Chen, the elderly couple probably wouldn't have been able to hold a funeral for their son.
"Aunt and uncle, leave everything to me."
Huo Chen regained his composure, his expression determined.
At that moment, he no longer had the luxury of continuing to grieve; he was solely responsible for his brother's affairs.
...
Half a day later, as darkness fell.
The funeral hall in the courtyard was prepared.
Huo Chen disliked showing off and didn't want to trigger more painful memories for his foster parents, so he held a modest funeral without informing any relatives or friends.
After escorting the elderly couple to the back room to rest, he stood guard in the front hall, never straying.
Creak!
As evening approached, the large iron gate swung open, and a figure in a white dress hurried into the room.
Behind her were two burly bodyguards in suits.
Huo Chen turned to look, his steely gaze flickering, his hand holding the burning paper frozen in place.
She had arrived.
It had been twelve years since they last saw each other, and she had changed significantly in appearance.
From the skinny girl she used to be, she had blossomed into a graceful goddess.
Her flawless figure, paired with the white dress, was as pure as snow, exuding a cold and elegant aura.
Her beautiful eyes were tinged with red, hinting at sorrow.
"Ying'er..."
Huo Chen stood up, his throat dry.
The woman seemed to ignore Huo Chen's call, swiftly walking to the memorial tablet, lighting three sticks of incense, and bowing three times.
Tears flowed freely.
"Yang Ying, it's me, Huo Chen."
Thinking that perhaps time and changed appearances had caused her to forget, he called out again.
He still remembered the vow they made twelve years ago when they enlisted in the army, promising never to part ways.
He had also pledged to marry Yang Ying upon his return.
This was the second thing he had to do upon coming back!
But why was she pretending not to recognize him now?
At that moment, Huo Chen felt an inexplicable pang in his heart.
Upon hearing his words, Yang Ying's beautiful eyes twitched slightly, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes, trying to compose herself.
She recognized Huo Chen the moment she entered.
Throughout the years, she never forgot their original vow, how could she forget the one she loved in her heart.
But now she couldn't acknowledge him; she didn't want to entangle Huo Chen in her troubles, didn't want him to suffer because of her.
Yang Ying slowly opened her eyes, determination shining in them, and turned to leave.
Snap!
Huo Chen gently grasped her jade arm.
"What are you doing? Release Miss Yang immediately."
The two bodyguards, sensing the tension, stood up, prepared to intervene.
"Stop."
Yang Ying halted them in time: "It's none of your business, get out!"
The two exchanged glances and reminded her, "Miss Yang, please remember the wedding in three days, the young master doesn't want any accidents."
With that, they exited the courtyard.
"You're getting married? To whom!"
Huo Chen's steely eyes were filled with despair.
"Huo Chen, let me go."
Yang Ying turned around and finally faced Huo Chen, suppressing her emotions and said, "Too much has happened over the years, we can't turn back."
"I used to dream every day that you would come back to find me, now that you're back, I have to marry someone else."
"But perhaps, this is just fate playing tricks on us."
The family compelled her to marry into a wealthy family, and the betrothal gifts had already been exchanged.
The other party's influence was not something the Yang family could afford to challenge, if she backed out, everyone in the Yang family, including her parents, would suffer dire consequences.
Huo Chen, a retired soldier, couldn't be involved in this mess.
"If you're unwilling, why did you agree?" Huo Chen gritted his teeth and asked.
When he ventured into the territory of the rebel army alone, seeking revenge for his brothers, he remained composed; when he single-handedly killed tens of thousands of enemy soldiers, he remained unruffled.
But now, looking at Yang Ying, his heart was in turmoil.
"In this world, things don't always go as we wish."
Yang Ying struggled to break free from Huo Chen's grasp, saying, "You are just a soldier, while they are the local tyrants of Changding City."
"Don't ask me again, I don't want you to end up like Tao Yue!"
These words twisted her heart like a knife, causing unbearable pain.
Huo Chen, how could he be any better?
Before Yang Ying could depart, he appeared in front of her and blocked her path, saying, "In this world, there is nothing I cannot control."
"If you are unwilling, then don't go back. Stay here, no one dares to bother you."
He would never allow the woman he deeply loved to become a pawn used by the family, married to someone without any affection.
His unwavering self-assurance momentarily blurred Yang Ying's beautiful eyes.
Unfortunately, reality could not be altered with mere words. What ability did Huo Chen have to contend with the powerful family?
It would only be worse than death.
Just as she was about to refuse.
"Kid, how dare you make Yang Ying refuse the marriage. Who do you think you are!"
A sharp and arrogant voice resonated at the door.
A young man with slicked-back hair and a carefree demeanor entered the courtyard with the bodyguards who had just departed.
Glancing towards the memorial hall, his face contorted with disgust, "So damn unlucky, can't even stand to look at this dead face."
"It's good that this stinky soldier Tao Yue is dead, what is there to mourn for."
"Come back with me, so I don't have to take action."
His expression was disdainful, his words venomous.
"Watch your mouth, show some respect for the dead, apologize!"
Huo Chen's eyes turned cold, with purple lightning swirling around him.
He was not unfamiliar with this person, he was Yang Ying's cousin Yang Jian, who used to be a bully when they were young, always picking on Yang Ying.
He couldn't tolerate it any longer, so he had severely beaten him up.
Growing up, a dog can't change its habit of eating shit.
"Huo Chen, are you talking to me?"
Yang Jian glanced at Huo Chen, sneered, "Haven't seen you in twelve years, I thought you and that stupid X were dead."
"I didn't expect only Tao Yue to die, not satisfying enough, his whole family should be wiped out."
"Apologize to me? I didn't smash his memorial tablet, that's already being generous."
Yang's eyes blazed with anger, scolding, "Yang Jian, you are too much!"
"What can I do if I'm too much?"
Yang Jian sneered, pointing at Huo Chen, "You so-called soldiers who claim to protect the country and defend the home, can you really protect it? Stop pretending!"
"Do you really think this is the army? With this orphan who has no parents to teach him, and Tao Yue's immortal parents, what can you do to me..."
Smack!
Before he could finish his sentence, Huo Chen ruthlessly slapped him, directly hitting Yang Jian's face.
With no hesitation in his strength, the slap caused him to spin in the air three times before landing heavily on the ground.
Half of his facial bones were shattered, not a single tooth remained in his mouth, his eyes rolled back, and he immediately fell into a coma.
If Huo Chen had not shown mercy, his eyeballs would have been burst from the force of the slap.
The bodyguards and Yang Ying were stunned by what they witnessed.
