Chapter 1 — One

Jayden:
“Alpha Jayden, maybe you’ll find your mate tonight.”
My Royal Beta snickered, holding the car door for me as I stepped out and gave a quick shrug to fix my coat.
Had Lewis not been my best friend, he would have never been able to talk about my mate to me again. But he was close to me, one of the few people I cared about.
“I don’t need a mate, you know that, Lewis. I already found mine, chose mine—and I can never go wrong with my choice, but the Moon Goddess can make a mistake,” I shrugged, watching his smile fade the moment he heard me mention my girlfriend, Melissa.
“Yeah, tell him,” Melissa Aubrey, my girlfriend, strolled out of the car from the other side and hugged me, reaching me with a pleasant smile on her lips.
Melissa was the daughter of the former Royal Beta of my pack, but now he was busy expanding his oil business. She was perfect for me.
Lewis rolled his eyes and moved to my side instead. The two had been at odds for a while, and I didn’t have the energy to ask why.
They just didn’t like each other.
But this evening was about the birthday girl.
We were attending the birthday of the daughter of my Royal Gamma. Grayson’s family had only one daughter, Elena, and she had just come of age. A party was thrown in her honor, and I was invited as the Alpha of the pack.
I would have turned down the invitation if my uncle hadn’t insisted that I accept it.
“I'm going to say hi to Mr Grayson,” I told to Melissa, peeling her hold away from me.
I was quick to catch sight of Mr Grayson who was talking to some other Alpha’s and pack elders.
I was about to walk in their direction when I felt my wolf stir and a scent hit me. My brows furrowed and my heartbeat pounded loudly in my ears. I understood something was wrong with my wolf.
I heard a cry from inside. Focusing on it, I stepped to the side, but what I heard left me frozen for a moment.
‘Mate!’
My heart sank in my chest, my eyes widening in real-time. I wondered if it was a joke, maybe a dream, but then I heard my wolf call for her again—this time even louder.
‘Mate!’
My head snapped around, scanning everyone in my vision. A mate? My wolf was feeling the mate bond, which meant my mate had to be nearby.
But here?
At this party?
I had spent years waiting for my mate, but she was nowhere to be found.
Not that it mattered to me who my mate was, but I just wanted to see who the Goddess had chosen for me.
When I didn’t find my mate, I took my relationship with Melissa further and even proposed to her.
She was everything I wanted in a woman—strong, beautiful, sexy, and daring. My exact type of woman.
So why did my mate have to show up now?
I walked further, needing at least a glimpse of this mate of mine, as my wolf wouldn’t rest until he saw her.
Following her scent, I arrived at the entrance of the Grayson Mansion. I looked around, searching for her, and the scent led me to a small house.
No… not a house—
A dog’s kennel
Why was I being drawn to a kennel? Could she be in there?
Letting my wolf take the lead, I moved toward the kennel and noticed a man about to lock it. I quickened my steps, almost like I was possessed.
I shoved the man aside and leaned forward to look inside.
With my heart pounding hard in my chest, I peered in—and what I saw shook me to my core.
It was a dark, small kennel. The silver chains shone, but they were too heavy for the fragile being inside to move around with.
There was a pregnant dog whimpering, and beside her—a girl.
Her hair was unkempt, dark circles making the white in her eyes stand out even more. Her lips were chapped, her skin rough.
She was crying, holding the dog, shaking.
The girl’s breathing was labored. Tears had left streaks on her cheeks. Her eyes widened in fear the moment she saw me. She opened her mouth.
I couldn’t even make out a single word, but I could tell she was pleading for something.
I was in shock, lost in what I was seeing.
Why was a girl placed with a dog, both chained in the same way?
The kennel was filthy, and so was the girl. There wasn’t much to see in her, and on top of that, the stench was overwhelming, as if the cubicle hadn’t been cleaned in weeks.
My mind raced with a thousand thoughts as I watched her.
And just when I thought I had enough surprises for one day, my wolf jumped and screamed—
‘Mate!’

Chapter 2 — Two

Zoraya:
"Move! You stupid bitch!" Julius, my master's loyal servant, hissed as he held the food for us.
He had pulled the chain back, yanking me into place so he could put some distance between us.
My small home, which I shared with Zara, was my safe space.
Zara was the family's dog, and she was treated the same way I was, though I never understood why. I looked just like the others, but they treated me like Zara. The kennel was my home, and I ate from the same bowl as Zara. I was chained like her—but even worse.
I was forced to crawl on the ground like a dog. I didn’t understand what I was. I was definitely not one of them.
And then there was Zara, my only family. For as long as I could remember, she had been by my side. She had cared for me like a mother would. I slept in her kennel and ate with her.
“So much food, it’s a good day for us,” I heard Zara say, making me turn my head toward her.
It was strange how I could understand Zara when others claimed she was just barking. In fact, we both understood each other. Others said I sounded like Zara, so they couldn't understand my words.
Maybe I had learned her language since she was all I knew?
“Julius, after feeding them, lock their kennel so they don’t run around and bother the guests for more food,” said the voice of none other than the lady of the house—the Mistress of the Manor, Estrella Grayson.
Estrella Ma’am was a beautiful woman with a strong and commanding presence. Her gray eyes gave her an innocent and sweet look, making people often mistake her for an angel.
But Estrella was no angel.
She was the devil in a woman’s body.
“Mmm, this is so delicious.” I lowered my body, bowed my head into the bowl, and tasted the meat. It had been so long since we had something this good.
Thanks to Elena’s birthday celebration today, we were lucky to get food.
As Julius walked out of the kennel to let us eat, I raised my head and caught a glimpse of Elena. She wore a beautiful red gown, looking like a princess. My eyes wandered to my torn rags, and I wondered—why were some given so much love and respect?
What could I do to be loved the way she was loved by her mother?
“How do I look?” Elena asked her mother, giving her dress a good twirl.
“You are the prettiest.” Lady Estrella cupped her daughter’s face in her hands and kissed her forehead. I gently touched my own forehead with my fingers, copying their actions.
I didn’t feel sad—it was just that, sometimes, water would gather in my eyes.
It couldn’t be sadness. Why would it be?
I should be grateful that I had good food today.
"You are beautiful too," somehow, Zara noticed me watching Elena with wishful eyes.
"I am not. I am nothing like her.I am just someone existing without an identity," I replied, making Julius peer inside the kennel and hiss at me.
"You should be on your best behavior. We have guests around," Julius muttered as he locked the kennel.
From the small window with silver bars, I could still see the guests arriving. They all looked so fashionable, happy, and walking on two feet—while I had to remain on all fours, or I would get scolded, sometimes even beaten.
"Ew, so filthy!" A woman who had just arrived probably caught a glimpse of me and grimaced. The way her nose wrinkled at the sight of me broke my heart.
I instantly pulled away from the window and touched my face with my rough, ragged fingers.
"Am I really that scary?" I asked Zara, who calmly walked over to me and started licking the back of my hand.
"To me, you are prettier than anyone else in the world," she said, her voice kind and gentle.
But there was only so much she could do. She wasn’t treated well either.
Zara was pregnant, and I hadn’t seen Elena or anyone else come over to check on her even once.
I hugged her and silently shed tears.
There were times when I wanted to ask the people around me, "Why? Why am I treated differently?"
But I knew I would never get any answers.
They wouldn’t understand me either.
I had lived my entire life in this kennel, and this was where I was going to die too.
"Ugh!" I bit my bottom lip as I complained about the sudden pain in my chest.
"What’s wrong? Are you okay?" Zara sensed my discomfort, quickly standing up on all fours and staring at my face.
"I’m not feeling well," I whispered, barely able to breathe out the words.
"Huh? We need to get help for you," she said, turning toward the small window we weren’t supposed to look out from.
"Please—don’t," I begged, realizing that if Julius saw her using the window and barking, he would punish her.
Julius would do anything to stay in Estrella’s good books. He could kill for her without blinking an eye.
How could I expect mercy from such a man?
"Ahhh!" As I groaned louder, Zara stepped away from me and toward the window, risking her life for me.
As she barked louder, I began to hear heavy footsteps.
Someone had seen her.
And it was going to be hell for us.

Chapter 3 — Three

Zoraya:
I couldn’t figure out what this pain was. Was it from eating after so long?
Regardless, Zara was determined to get help for me. I was feeling feverish, an unease in my chest was making me shake in my body.
"Help!" Zara screamed, her voice filled with worry. "Please help my child!" she cried out loud.
Did she just call me her child?
My eyes immediately filled with tears. I couldn’t explain how I felt. I was happy—happy to hear someone claim me as their own.
The others might hear her words as nothing but barking, but she had touched my heart once again.
My lips trembled as I watched her.
I felt guilty for wanting love just a few minutes ago when I already had someone who loved me like her own child.
"What is this dog barking about?" Julius yelled from outside the kennel. "If I hear you bark again—" he warned Zara, but she kept going.
"Please help her! She needs assistance!" Zara pleaded again, desperation clear on her face. I couldn't get how people could not feel bad for her. How people around us couldn’t see the treatment we were getting. We would sleep in the cold dog house day in day out, every weather too.
Julius unlocked the door and grunted, his expression darkening at the sight.
"Did this bitch teach you to be a nuisance? Ugh! Dogs are supposed to be obedient," he yelled at Zara, and I immediately got a bad feeling.
He was losing his temper again, and that was never a good sign.
His eyes moved to me, and a dark look crossed his face.
I was curled up in the corner, my arms wrapped around my body, my eyes fixed on his face, trying to predict his next move.
"If you weren’t so filthy… I’m sure your punishments would be different," he muttered as he glared at me, then began to remove his belt.
I didn’t understand what he meant by that.
My punishments were always different.
Sometimes, I was forced to run a mile on hot, rough ground. Other times, I went without food for days.
Once he was done taking off his belt, his gaze shifted from me to Zara.
"But dogs are just animals. They behave best when they’re tamed properly."
His words were followed by a whip—Zara being the one to suffer the blow.
The moment the belt hit her, she whined and tried to get away.
My heart twisted in my chest at the sight.
Zara was pregnant, and he was beating her.
"No! Get away from her!" I jumped onto all fours and lunged at Julius, attacking him.
The whip he had raised for Zara landed on my back instead. But I was determined to protect her.
This time, I fought back even harder.
The moment my nails scratched his arm, all hell broke loose.
"Oh, you filthy animal! You probably have so many diseases—" Julius screamed, disgusted by my touch.
He grabbed a fistful of my hair and slammed me against the wall.
My already fragile, weak body crashed against the hard surface.
I felt like my bones had shattered.
Julius kept beating Zara, who was now bleeding.
I tried to get between them several times, but he was too strong. He tossed me around like I was a feather.
"Please stop! Don't you see she’s pregnant?" I fell to my knees and lowered my head, bowing before him, begging for mercy for Zara.
"Don't bark!" he yelled again, and my breath hitched in my throat.
I bit my tongue to silence myself, realizing it was our voices that angered him.
I wished I hadn’t complained out loud. Maybe then, Zara would have been fine.
"Now, if I hear you two again—" He wagged his finger at us.
Both of us remained silent as if we didn’t even have tongues.
The moment he walked out of the kennel, I rushed to Zara and hugged her.
Zara was now slumped on the ground, her breathing shallow, her eyes locked on the door.
This wasn’t fair.
She was only trying to get help for me.
"Please—" I let out another whimper when I heard approaching footsteps.
I quickly pulled away and hugged Zara, bracing myself.
It had to be someone else coming to punish us.
If we didn’t stop making noise, our punishment would only get worse.
As I watched Julius shut the door, I assumed that was it. No one would come to check on Zara for hours.
But then—
The door suddenly swung open again.
This time, a tall and broad man, someone completely unfamiliar, shoved Julius aside and unlocked the door.
For a moment, I forgot to move.
He was so handsome.
His hair was perfectly cut, and his physique was unlike anyone I had ever seen.
And then—
My eyes met his.
Amber eyes!
His eyes were a shade so warm, so mesmerizing, that my heart skipped a beat.
He seemed different from the others.
His scent was so unique that even from a distance, it soothed me.
He was looking at me too.
In fact, he was staring at me.
Did he not think I was filthy?
He must not, because he just stood there, watching me, examining me.
Was he sniffing my scent, thinking the same thing?
But then—
As I opened my mouth to ask for help, I saw his expression change.
"Please help her!" I pleaded.
And then, I saw it.
He wasn’t different from the others.
The way he gasped and stepped back made it clear—he didn’t understand my language either.
The way his body flinched and he recoiled told me everything.
He saw me as nothing more than a filthy animal.
