Chapter 1
DENISE
I'd lost count of how many times Dante Blackwood had taken me tonight.
My body felt like it was literally coming apart at the seams as I was drowning from the intensity of the sensations that I was experiencing in the hands of Dante.
The Alpha knew every inch of me too well, he knew every sensitive spot that made me gasp.
Four years together had given him a map and he was well detailed when using that knowledge in the privacy of his bed chambers.
"Clear my schedule starting tomorrow," Dante said, already getting up from the bed and dressing like his life depended on it.
His tone was business-like and cold, like he was speaking to someone lesser than him. "I'm taking the week off. Book two tickets to the Northern Territories."
Hope grew in my chest before I could stop it because I had come to be disappointed by Dante, many times. "You're taking me on vacation?"
Stupid. So stupid to hope.
Dante paused, his jaw tightening as he looked at me. "I'm going with Elena."
The name hit me like a physical blow. Elena Silvermoon—his childhood sweetheart, the daughter of the Silver Creek Pack's Alpha. The she-wolf who'd married someone else four years ago and just finalized her divorce and was finally a free woman and available for the taking.
I lowered my head, forcing the words past the lump in my throat as I nodded my head pretending to not look affected by his cruelty. "Okay, Alpha..."
"Denise." His voice softened slightly—the tone that used to make me think he cared about me, and was trying not to make me feel bad.
"You're just an omega. You know I can't take you as my Luna."
I looked up at him, managing a bitter smile on my face as I shrugged my shoulders. "I never expected you to... But now that Elena's back, shouldn't we end this?"
His expression darkened immediately hearing the words from my mouth.
He reached out, threading his fingers through my hair in what might have looked like affection to anyone else, a sign that he loved me and he cared.
To me, it felt like a leash, one that I was unable to pull off.
He placed a credit card on the nightstand as it was the answer to all the problems. "Be good. Buy whatever you want."
"I don't want to be your mistress anymore."
The words came out stronger than I'd intended, and I held his gaze. He had deflected the first message that I said. But there was no way I was backing down from this. I knew he'd eventually make Elena his Luna. I'd always known.
"You're getting ahead of yourself." His patience was already wearing thin as I could see his hands forming into a fist for a brief moment before releasing it. "We'll deal with that when the time comes. This isn't your decision to make."
He left without another word.
As the door closed, a ringing started in my deaf ear—the one that hadn't worked properly since my first year at the pack academy. The injury came courtesy of Lyra Blackwood, Dante's sister, and her friends. The bullying had left me deaf on one side, with a crushed pinky toe and a cigarette burn that nearly blinded me.
Someone had filmed it and posted it online. The scandal exploded across the werewolf community.
The academy called in the parents. Representing Lyra was Dante—her older brother and the pack's heir.
Maybe it was for the Blackwood Pack's reputation. Maybe it was pity. But Dante reached out to me in that hospital room, his dark eyes intense as he'd said,
"Don't be scared. I won't let anyone hurt you again."
God, I'd been so pathetic. So desperate for protection, so desperate to be seen as anything other than a weak orphan omega.
I fell for him completely. At my most vulnerable time in my life, Dante had become everything to me.
I used to think he was my salvation. Now I knew better. He didn't love me. He just wouldn't let me go.
---
At Blackwood Enterprises, Dante had a meeting about transferring some responsibilities. Elena waited in his office while I brought her coffee, that she had ordered me to do in front of Dante and Dante had pretended to be blind.
"Thank you, Denise." Elena's smile was everything, gentle and alluring to men who saw her as a masterpiece to own. She came from an Alpha bloodline, a perfect match for Dante's status. They'd known each other since childhood.
She had everything I didn't—she came from the right type of family, she was educated, she also had the easy confidence of someone who'd never had to fight for scraps. Just sitting there, her mere presence made me feel like I was suffocating.
I practically ran from the office.
In the break room, I overheard the other assistants gossiping instead of focusing on their workload.
The office was buzzing with conversation as I heard someone speak.
"Alpha Blackwood and Elena are going on their honeymoon, apparently. I heard it's official now—once they're back, the Luna ceremony will be announced."
My hand jerked, and boiling water splashed across my skin. The cup shattered on the floor. I barely felt the burn as I showed my hand under the cold water trying to minimise the pain.
Dante was making Elena his Luna. Which meant us, whatever we were behind closed doors were over and not only that, my internship at this company too was over.
"Denise, Alpha Blackwood wants you to drive him and Elena to the airport at eleven," someone called out.
I forced a smile. Of course he did. There were drivers available that would kill for this duty, in a bid to get close to the alpha and Luna apparent, but he chose me. To remind me of my place. To kill whatever foolish hope that still lived in my heart.
Dante and his sister were the same. The only difference was that his sister was someone who shattered bodies while Dante went for the hearts.
I pulled out my phone and stared at a blocked number for a long moment before unblocking it.
"Mr. Nightshade," I said when he answered, my voice steadier than I felt.
"You once said if I agreed to your arrangement, you'd sponsor my studies abroad. Does that offer still stand?"
Kieran Nightshade—Alpha of the Moonlight Pack, one of the most powerful wolves in the region. We'd met at a business function months ago. His interest in me had been... obvious.
My phone buzzed before I had even made it back to my desk. I looked down, expecting nothing, and saw Kieran's name already there.
“Of course. Think carefully. The 13th works for me, I'll clear my afternoon. Let's talk face to face. Everything okay?”
“Everything's fine,” I typed back. “I'll explain when I see you. Thank you, Kieran.”
Chapter 2
DENISE
"Denise." Elena's voice made me turn as I saw she was standing at the door of the break room looking perfectly poised as usual.
My wolf whimpered inside me—the pathetic omega instincts that made me want to submit to her natural authority.
"Yes, Ms. Silvermoon?"
"I need help picking up a few things for the trip."
She handed me a handwritten list,
My eyes caught on the very first item on the list: contraceptives.
"Thank you. Keep this between us?" She winked, like we were girlfriends sharing secrets between ourselves, giggling.
I nodded taking the list from her, and left, without a change in my expression. Whatever she was looking for, I was going to make sure that she doesn't get it.
I was nineteen the first time with Dante. It was my birthday—the first birthday I'd ever really celebrated. He brought me flowers and a cake.
It was really the basic things but to me, an omega orphan who had never received anything or celebrated my birthday before, it felt like I was on top of the world.
And in response, I gave him everything that night. My virginity was his to claim, my body his to destroy, his name, permanent on my lips throughout that night. I really thought I had found my happily ever after.
What a fucking joke. Give a girl who grew up with nothing one cake and some flowers, and she'll hand you her whole heart.
Four years together, and I'd never once bought contraceptives. Dante didn't like them, so I took the pills instead. They made me sick, messed with my wolf, but I took them anyway because he wanted me to.
But for Elena? Of course he wouldn't make her take pills. Apparently that was too harsh on her precious alpha bloodline.
---
On the drive to the airport, I stayed silent while they talked in the backseat.
"We're running late. Drive faster," Dante said, his eyes meeting mine in the rearmirror.
"Yes, Alpha." I said keeping my face blank and uninterested as I stepped on the accelerator and turned left on green.
A boy darted into the intersection—a werewolf pup who should've known better. I swerved hard to avoid him and crashed straight into the curb.
"Elena!" At the moment of impact, Dante threw himself over her, shielding her body with his, taking the hit with his body and making sure she wasn't hurt.
The driver's side took the worst of it. The airbag deployed, and the metal twisted on itself pinning me against the seat. My left leg was trapped, pain blurring everything.
"Dante..." Fear clawed at my throat, as I felt the subtle rise of the suffocating darkness. "Help me..."
I was terrified of being trapped. Of small spaces where I couldn't move, couldn't breathe.
Lyra had locked me in that crate during my first year at the academy. No matter how much I screamed or pounded on the wood, no one came to my rescue.
For hours and hours, I waited, my voice hoarse from screaming, my hands bloody from hurting myself, trying to stay sane as the air got thinner and thinner.
If the janitor hadn't noticed the puddle of urine on the floor the next morning, I would've died in there.
"Dante!" Seeing him start to exit the car, I panicked and forgot Elena was there. "Don't leave me—"
"The rescue team is coming." He helped Elena out, his face dark. He pulled out his phone to call for help.
"She's still trapped." Elena glanced at me, suspicion showing in her eyes. She had noticed that I had called the Alpha by his first name, like it was familiar to me. No subordinate should be calling their Alpha by his first name.
Dante wrapped his arm around her, trying to shield her from looking at me as he ran a hand through her hair, trying to calm her. "The crash wasn't bad. We'll take a cab to the airport. We need to be there before our flight is gone. She can stay here while we leave. She's not important. They'll get her out."
"But the meeting—" Elena started.
"No time." He checked his watch, then shot me a cold look that was heavy with warning as he looked down and up at me, fury present before hiding it away as she faced her. "Rescue will handle it."
They walked away. Dante never looked back at me.
I lost it. Pounded on the window, struggling against the metal pinning me down against the chair. But he never turned around, I watched as he left, his hands around her, muttering soft words to her. Never looking at me.
He was afraid Elena would figure us out.
Watching him disappear down the street, something inside me finally broke.
"Dante!" I screamed, my voice raw. "Help me! You promised you'd never leave me!"
Sobs tore from my throat. "Liar! You're a fucking liar! You said you'd protect me!"
My wolf thrashed inside me, feeding my panic. The old trauma spiraled out of control, making me hurt myself as I fought the wreckage.
My injuries weren't serious before, but now blood ran down my face from where I'd smashed my head against the steering wheel.
"Let me out... Let me out!" I screamed until my throat was raw.
Then I smelled it—smoke from the engine.
"The car's on fire!"
"There's no one inside—I saw them leave!"
People were shouting.
I sat trapped, my panic fading into something cold and hollow as I started counting.
"One, two, three, four..."
The night Lyra locked me in that box, I counted to 6,788 before they found me.
I wonder what number I'll reach before I die this time.
Chapter 3
DENISE
I woke to a white ceiling and the steady beep of a machine somewhere beside my head. For a long moment I did not know where I was, or when, or why my throat felt like it had been scraped raw from the inside. Then the memory came back all at once, the smoke, the heat, Dante's back turned toward me, and I flinched so hard the machine beside me spiked in protest.
A nurse came in a few minutes later, checked my vitals, told me I was lucky. She said that the rescue team arrived and saved me just half a minute before the car exploded, and that smoke inhalation and a fractured leg were the worst of it. I nodded along to all of it, though the words felt distant, like they belonged to someone else's story.
My phone was on the side table, badly cracked but still working. I picked it up out of habit more than desire, and the first thing that loaded, because of course it did, was Elena's public page.
There were dozens of new posts. Photos from the villa, golden light and turquoise water, Elena in a white dress laughing on a balcony, Dante's arm around her waist, his head tipped toward hers like he was telling her a secret. One caption read something about new beginnings. Another, posted just hours after the accident, showed the two of them toasting glasses of champagne against a sunset, no mention anywhere of a burning car on the side of a highway, no mention of the woman they had left behind in it.
I scrolled through photo after photo, waiting to feel the familiar ache I had carried for years, the tightness in my chest that used to come whenever I saw Dante look at someone else the way he had once, briefly, looked at me.
It did not come.
I kept scrolling, almost testing myself, almost searching for the wound, and found only a strange, clean quiet where the pain used to live. I thought of Dante's face through the cracked windshield, calm, apologetic, already turning away. I thought of his voice explaining that Elena was scared of fire, as if that settled things, as if my own fear, my own suffocating panic, had simply not been worth factoring into his decision at all.
I set the phone down on my chest and stared at the ceiling, and understood, with a clarity that felt almost peaceful, that whatever I had loved in Dante Reyes had finally, completely burned away somewhere on the side of that highway. There was no ash left to mourn. There was only relief, quiet and enormous, spreading through me like the first easy breath after years of holding it in.
I was discharged four days later with a walking boot and strict instructions to rest. I did not rest. The moment I was steady enough to manage stairs, I went to the company, walked past the front desk without stopping to explain myself, and rode the elevator up to Human Resources, where I placed a single folded letter on the desk of a woman I barely knew.
"I'd like to submit my resignation," I said. "Effective immediately."
She blinked at me, clearly unprepared for the request, and started to say something about notice periods and paperwork, but I was already turning to leave. I did not have the energy left to explain myself to anyone. I had used all of it just getting there.
I went home. My apartment, small and plain, the one thing in my life that had never once felt like it belonged to anyone but me, welcomed me with its familiar quiet. I set my bag down by the door, sank onto the couch, and for the first time in longer than I could remember, let myself simply sit still, no one waiting on me, no coffee to make, no list to fill, no errands hovering at the edge of my mind. I closed my eyes and let the silence settle over me like something soft.
My phone rang twenty minutes later.
Dante's name lit up the screen, and my whole body went tense before I had even decided to answer it. Some old, tired habit in me nearly let it ring out. But I picked it up anyway, if only to finally hear what excuse he had built this time.
"Why did you resign?"
His voice was as cold as ever, but this time it seemed to carry an unconcealed rage.
"Why did you resign?" he repeated, "Are you still in a temper? Just because that day I left with Elena instead of saving you immediately?" He said it with the finality of someone closing an argument and was not interested in opening it anymore.
"I've also spoken to HR. They've been instructed to give you a few days of paid leave, and your resignation has been cancelled."
