Chapter 1 — The Blood Incident

The cheerful chatter of the cafeteria is interrupted by a loud female scream. A girl can be seen running out of the large hall with horror written all over her face. The cause of said horror is Carter Miller, who had accidentally spilled his drink on her.
Honestly, I don't blame Emily for panicking. This had to be the third time this month that Carter had spilled his blood bag all over her. I was beginning to think he did it on purpose just so he could see her freak out and have a panic attack. He was probably still bitter about Emily breaking up with him after finding out what he was.
You see, Carter Miller was one of the few vampires who attended our school. More than half of the school population was made up of what we called supernaturals. These were beings we all thought were nothing more than stories but turned out to exist—and, scarily enough, they blended well with humans to the point where one couldn't tell them apart from us.
Half a decade ago, the existence of supernatural beings was made known to the human population. Now, they lived freely alongside us, as long as they didn't hurt anybody, they were free to live as they liked. They attended our schools, worked among humans, lived with humans, and interacted with us.
Ghouls, werewolves, witches, incubuses, and vampires all lived with us now. Despite the world accepting their existence, some of us were still scared shitless of them. People like Emily, who happened to find out that her childhood friend and long-time boyfriend had all along been a blood-sucking vampire, had trouble accepting things. And for people like me, whose mom happened to be married to a vampire and had a vampire as a stepbrother, there was no choice but to accept it.
It was weird. It was scary. It was unavoidable. Living with things we once thought didn't even exist, knowing the fact that my stepfamily could one day lose control and suck all the blood out of my mom or me, was terrifying. This was why I planned to save enough money to take both me and my mom away from this town. To a place where only humans lived without fear. Things could go back to the way they were before. I don’t think the world is going to change back anytime soon. I mean, I just saw on the news last night that the president of the state was a werewolf.
I sigh to myself, taking a bite from my apple. I glance over my shoulder to see that the boy behind me is gulping down a steak, raw and uncooked. He is munching so loudly and making contented hums with each bite that it sends shivers down my spine. Geez, a girl couldn’t even eat in peace.
I grab my apple and make my way out of the cafeteria. I take a big bite out of it and head over to the bathroom. I knew I would find my best friend there. I find Emily hunched over the sink, trying to wash off the blood from her shirt.
"Are you okay, Em?"
She looks over at me from her shoulder and shakes her head. Her eyes are red, and it seems to me that she had been crying. "I don’t know why he keeps doing this to me. He knows how much blood scares me."
"I know." I walk over to her and grab some tissues to help her with her cleaning. Most of the blood has been washed away, leaving behind only a red patch. "We have only a year left, remember? After high school, we can move away to Hawaii. They don’t have supernaturals there."
"How do you know that? These people... they are everywhere!"
"We can only keep ourselves hopeful. Besides, I think Carter is only doing this because he still likes you."
"I know," Emily sighs, her gaze softening as she thinks back on her childhood sweetheart. "I miss him too. It’s just that... he drinks blood, you know? I know he needs it as much as we need food, but I can't handle it sometimes. I hate blood. I love him, but I hate blood."
"You’ll figure it out, I know you will," I give her a friendly nudge, and she laughs. "Clean up, I’ll get your books from the cafe."
"Kay."
I hand over the tissue to her and make my way out of the bathroom. The hallways are empty because everyone else is still in the lunchroom. I had hoped it would remain empty for much longer, but when I hear the sound of male laughter approaching, I know that my hopes will soon be dashed. The school's pretty boys were approaching. I stood my ground and waited. I needed to have a little word with Carter about the stunt he pulled today.
It doesn’t take long before their group makes an appearance. Western High School’s PB (short for Pretty Boys) was made up of four members: the handsome playboy (incubus) Kevin, the sports guy (ghoul) Ashton, the genius Walter (werewolf), and the most popular guy in school, Carter (vampire). Those four jerks were the dream and nightmare of every human girl in school. Girls both loved and feared them at the same time. All girls, but not me.
"Carter," I called out, causing all of them to look in my direction. I didn’t care to look at any of them, as Carter was my only target.
"Well, hello there, Kerry," he gives me a wide grin. He probably knows why I’m talking to him, but doesn’t care. The fuck face!
"I warned you last time never to spill anything on Emma again."
"It wasn’t like I did it on purpose. She’s such a wuss sometimes."
"It’s happened three times now." I hold up three fingers in his face. "If it happens a fourth time, I’ll send a wooden cross through your heart. Got it?"
Carter winces slightly at my threat but doesn’t give a response. I walk past him toward the cafeteria, knowing that he got the message. I know that he knows I have a rather large cross, which I keep under my pillow. It might not kill him, but it will sure as hell leave a scar.
This was my way of preparing myself. I didn’t trust my stepfather, and I didn’t trust my stepbrother either. He stares at me weirdly. Ever since the first time Mom had introduced us over dinner, I noticed how Silas stared too long at me. What could he possibly be thinking in that big brain of his? Maybe he was contemplating how sweet my blood would taste, or how soft my neck would be when he sinks his fangs into it.
Yeah, I didn’t trust Silas.
But it’s only one year. I’ll graduate high school in a year and will be old enough to look after myself.

Chapter 2 — Step-brother

The long school day finally came to an end, and I could go home. "Home" was the word I called it, but it didn't feel like that to me. It was a terrible experience going to a school full of supernaturals, but it was even worse going back to a house filled with them.
I wasn't old enough to get my own car, and I had refused my stepfather's offer to get me a driver, so I usually took a taxi to and from school. It was a twenty-minute drive from school to the mansion where I resided, and soon I was already there.
I took off my shoes and headed up the stairs. I knew my mom wouldn't be home at this time of day, and my stepfather would probably be at work, which meant it would just be me and Silas. Silas, whom I hoped I wouldn't run into.
I slowed my footsteps, hoping to make little noise so as not to attract his attention. Unfortunately for me, vampires had very good hearing, and before I even got to my door, the one next to mine swung open. I was faced with a shirtless Silas.
"Hey, kiddo, how was school?" my stepbrother asked with a half-grin that displayed his perfect white teeth and sharp fangs. Silas was over six feet tall and had the most stunning pair of honey-brown eyes I had ever seen. His dark brown hair was messy in a way that made it look like he had just woken up from a nap, only I knew better than that. Vampires don't sleep.
"Don't call me that," I growled.
"Someone's grumpy. What happened? Something go wrong at school?"
"Why can't you just leave me alone?"
"Seriously, this attitude isn't good at all." I ignored him and focused on unlocking my door. This was my room, and it held all my private stuff, stuff I didn't need Silas meddling with. I would have just placed garlic on my door, but that would probably be going too far, since this is Silas's house more than it would ever be mine.
He sensed my bad mood and chose to leave me alone. I locked my door and headed straight for the bathroom to take a shower. The warm water was soothing against my skin, and I couldn't help but sigh in relief. Thank God tomorrow was the weekend; I could spend the day catching up on some sleep. After scrubbing myself clean, I wrapped myself in a towel and dried my hair. I pulled on some shorts and a baggy shirt. I didn’t think I had the energy to change into something later, so it was better to wear something comfortable.
I had just settled in my bed with my phone in my hands when my stomach growled, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten anything other than an apple for lunch. I rolled my eyes and pulled myself to my feet before making my way out of the room and toward the kitchen. I searched the fridge and cabinets for something to eat, but I realized that Mom hadn’t gone grocery shopping for a while now. All I could see were leftover takeout, colas, and a filled-up wine bottle, which I knew contained stuff that would leave me nauseated. Goosebumps rose on my skin just thinking about it.
I heard footsteps behind me and glanced over my shoulder to see Silas leaning against the door. "Are you hungry?"
I nodded.
"Come on, I'll take you out to eat." He turned around and gestured for me to follow, and I did. Silas grabbed his car keys from the counter, and we prepared to go out. He froze in his steps, however, just after stepping out of the house. He glanced over his shoulder at me with a frown. "You can't go out like that."
"Why not?" I looked down at myself. The t-shirt almost reached my knees, and I didn’t see anything indecent about what I was wearing. Plus, I just didn’t want to take the trip back to my room to change. This would have to do. "It's not too short, is it?"
"It is. Go change."
"If I go to my room, I won't come back down. If I happen to die of starvation, it'll be on you."
He groaned in response. Silas got into the car, and I climbed into the seat beside him. The car smelled clean, awfully sweet, just like him. I put on my seatbelt, and Silas started up the car and pulled out of the parking lot. He turned on some music, which I was relieved about. On most days, he would just try to initiate conversations with me. This was why I chose to take a taxi to school every day. He was a meddler—a meddling vampire.
We pulled into the restaurant Bill (my stepfather) brought us to every weekend. The food here was to die for, and so was the blood sausage they served. But Bill had stopped ordering that after I had thrown up the last time while watching him eat. Normal people would have been offended by my actions, but not Bill. Bill had chosen to drink wine (which you can guess was blood) every single time, just so he wouldn’t make me uncomfortable. Silas didn’t take anything whenever we came; he just sat there and watched me eat the whole time. I often wondered what he was thinking, why he stared at me with such longing in his eyes. Maybe vampires could smell the blood pumping through one's veins; that was the only explanation I could think of.
Silas guided me to the booth we usually took every time we came here. The restaurant was only half full, and I think most of the people here were couples on dates. There was this one couple two booths away from us; I think the guy was a vampire, but I knew the girl was human. They had this love-drunk expression on their faces as they looked at each other. It was... weird. Like, why would someone choose to be with a vampire when they could be with their own kind? Did that come off as racist?
"Do you think they’re cute?" Silas asked with a smile, noticing my stare. I looked back down at my hands.
"I think they won’t last."
"Hmm." He wanted to say more; I could see it in his gaze. But for some reason, he decided against it, and I was left wondering if I had said something wrong. It wasn’t very nice to predict someone else’s relationship, no matter what I thought.
"I mean, it’s a weird match, but if they love each other, then they'll pull through."
"You say it as if it’s wrong to love someone that isn’t like you. It’s unfair, but we don’t just choose who we fall in love with, Kerry."
"You sound mad." I watched him carefully. My lips pulled up in a knowing smile. "Could it be that there’s also someone you like who isn’t a vampire?"
"You could say that." Silas didn’t even try to deny it. I became more intrigued. I knew Silas attended a private college away from the city, so I didn’t know much about his social life. I would understand if there was a secret girlfriend he hadn’t told our parents about.
"Is she someone from your college?"
"No."
"Then someone from your dad’s company?"
"Kerry."
"You can tell me, I won’t tell anyone."
"Waiter!"
In the end, Silas didn’t tell me anything about this secret love of his. But I wasn’t too bothered; I had a feeling I would find out sooner or later.
---
I helped Mom prepare dinner that night. I wasn’t a fan of cooking, but then again, I loved home-cooked meals, so there’s that. Mom said she was trying out some Italian recipes today, so I’d get to eat something new.
Bill and Silas were already seated at the dinner table. Bill was nursing a glass of wine (blood), and Silas was scrolling through his phone. He only looked up when I was seated across from him, stuffing my face with food. There was that longing look again—why did he only have that look when he thought I wasn’t looking?
"Kerry, slow down, you’re going to choke yourself," my mother warned.
"It’s alright, Stella. I’m sure Kerry had a long day." I frowned slightly at Bill. I didn’t like it when someone pronounced my full name, and he knew it. Jerk.
"We came back from a restaurant not long ago," Silas exposed, flashing me a teasing smirk. Bigger jerk.
"Does it even matter? Why won’t you guys just let me eat in peace?"
"You’re cute when you get mad, kiddo."
"Don’t call me that, Silas." Silas shook his head in amusement, and I went back to stuffing my face. But of course, Bill had to speak again.
"By the way, dear, your mom and I wanted to have a word with you."
"What about?"
"Well, since you only have a year left of high school, we were wondering which college you would like to apply for. I would recommend the one Silas attends; it’s one of the best in the country, and your mom would feel at ease if you were closer to the family."
"I don’t want to."
"Kerry, you haven’t even given it a second thought."
"There’s nothing to think about, Mom. I’m moving to Hawaii after high school."
"Hawaii? Seriously? When you said that a year ago, I laughed because I thought you were joking. Why in the world would you want to move to Hawaii?" I could see the angry lines on my mother’s forehead and knew that she wouldn’t back down on the topic. Neither would I. Not today.
"I don’t see anything wrong with wanting to move to Hawaii. The weather is nice, The beaches are beautiful, and the schools are fine (and most importantly, there are no supernatural beings there). I think I’m old enough to make my own decisions, Mom."
"But Bill wants you to go to a private college. You could make better plans for your life, Kerry."
"Well, maybe I don’t want Bill’s help anymore! I don’t want to owe him any more than I already do!"
"Kerry, you don’t owe me an—"
"Listen, Bill, I appreciate everything you’ve done for Mom and for me. I’m not ungrateful, but I don’t want to feel indebted to you anymore. I eat your food, live in your house, and depend on your money, but I’m terrified of you! I can’t help but think you might lose control and kill us someday. I’m not comfortable! This isn’t the life I wanted! Mom… Mom, how could you have married him?! You didn’t even know his kind existed five years ago. You… I don’t want to stay here anymore." I got up from the table and hurried to my room.
"Kerry!"
I bolted the door and buried my face in my pillow. Sobs wracked my body, and my chest felt tight. Why? Why did I say those hurtful things? Bill didn’t deserve that, and neither did Silas. Why couldn’t I be like my mom? Why couldn’t I be accepting?
I don’t know how long I stayed like that. I could hardly breathe with the pillow pressed against my face, but I didn’t want to move. I was numb—everything was numb. I wondered how they’d react tomorrow. Would I even have the courage to face them?
I felt completely exhausted, and before I knew it, I had fallen fast asleep, unaware of the figure that snuck into my room that night.

Chapter 3 — Let Me Buy You

"Here’s your coffee, please come again," I say to a customer in a stiff voice. God, I hated this job.
It wasn’t the fact that I had to spend six hours on my feet with only a fifteen-minute break, serving coffee to overly cheerful customers while having to force out a smile each time I addressed them. All that might sound bad, but it was my boss who really got to me.
I didn’t even need this job. Both of my parents were against it. But I needed a sense of independence in my life. Today was even more difficult than usual because I was in a sour mood. I felt terrible about what happened last night. I had tried to apologize, but Bill had beaten me to it. Why was he even apologizing when I was the one with the problem? Even my mom kept giving me those sympathetic looks, almost as if she felt guilty for what happened.
Silas. Silas wasn’t home when I woke up. Bill had said he went off to a friend’s house earlier that morning, but I had an eerie feeling he was avoiding me. I was such an asshole!
I would make sure to apologize to him as soon as I saw him. I mean, what kind of freak says she’s frightened of her own family?! Like, who cares if they drink blood? I think Bill mentioned it was animal blood. Ugh... whatever!
I was pulled out of my thoughts by the soft chime of the doorbell. I raised my eyes to see the new customer who had walked into the shop. Despite myself, I felt my heart skip a beat at the sight of him. It was a boy who appeared to be around my age. He had honey-blond hair that formed a slight bang over his face, his eyes were a deep shade of blue, and his skin was incredibly pale. Just the sight of him had me clenching my thighs together. His scent was incredible and mouthwatering.
I shook my head to snap out of my daze. I rolled my eyes, feeling incredibly stupid for falling so easily for his charms. He had "incubus" written all over him. One thing I knew was that incubuses were even harder to shake off than vampires.
Thankfully, there were only older people in the shop. I would hate to have to handle the screams of teenage girls who couldn’t control themselves better. His eyes scanned the shop before landing on me. He approached me.
"Hello, what can I get you?" Despite knowing the person in front of me wouldn’t need anything, I still had to ask. It was only common courtesy, I guess.
"Hi, um... do you offer your services?" Even his voice sounded sultry and pleasant. I only knew a few incubuses in school and hadn’t interacted much with them, so I wouldn’t know if the sexy voice was also a trait passed down.
"Of course I do. I make coffee."
"No... not that. I mean... well, you know what I mean." He ran his tongue across his bottom lip, and I noticed how dry his lips were. He also seemed sweaty and a bit breathless, like he had just run a marathon.
"Do you want coffee?" I asked with a slight frown.
"No," he sighed in frustration. "I mean, do you offer your services... sexually?"
"This is a coffee shop, mister!" It took everything in me not to scream that part out. I mean, I would have assumed it was obvious to everyone who came in here that we didn’t offer sexual relief to our customers. "We do not do that here."
"Of course you don’t. Damn, that must’ve sounded so creepy." He ran a hand through his blond hair. "Hey, are you getting off work soon? Maybe we could..."
"Can you just fucking go away?" My annoyance finally slipped out. But I think I had the right to be offended. I mean, how else would someone feel when they’re asked if they could whore themselves out? Damn incubuses. All they ever did was think with their dicks or, in some cases, vaginas. I get that they needed to feed off human lust to survive, but it didn’t mean they had to go around harassing people, did it? "I’m trying to work here."
"Right." He looked embarrassed now. Good. He turned around and walked out of the shop.
Not a moment after he was gone, my boss walked out of the back office.
"What was that about, Kerina?"
"It’s Kerry, and I know you must have heard everything already."
Brad gave me a slight glare. It only lasted a second before his gaze turned thoughtful. "Do you think it would bring more money to add sexual services to the menu?"
"This is a fucking coffee shop, Brad! So no, I do not think it would be wise to add that to our menu."
"You know, I have a right to fire you for your attitude."
"Good luck finding someone else who would work for you at such low pay." I grabbed my purse and made my way from behind the counter toward the door.
"Where are you going?! Your shift’s not even over yet!"
"I don’t care. I’m done for the day." I ignored Brad’s cursing and stepped out of the coffee shop.
I took in a deep breath, relieved to finally get some fresh air into my lungs. I hadn’t even bothered to change out of my work clothes due to my haste to leave that place. The sun was going down by now, meaning the evening was approaching. I didn’t want to go home yet. I didn’t want to face my family yet.
There was a park right across the street from the shop. I crossed over and found a bench under a shady tree to sit on. I stared into the green patches of trees that made up the space. This would make a nice painting. There was once a time when I was into that, back when my dad was still alive. We would go to the park on weekends along with my mom. She would read a book out loud, and Dad would try to paint the scenery. We weren’t very good at it, but it was still fun. Those were the good old days, the ones I wish more than anything I could go back to. But we all know that’s not possible. Dad left, and Mom remarried. I have a new family now. I should get used to it. It’s been two years already.
"Hi."
I nearly fell off the bench in fright at the voice. My wrist was pulled, preventing me from crashing into the soft grass.
"Sorry."
"You again! Don’t you take a hint? I told you to go away."
"Technically, you told me to leave the shop. Besides, I wanted to apologize for earlier. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable."
"Uncomfortable? You asked me if I were a whore! That was sexual harassment."
"I know. I was kinda desperate back there. I’m sorry. How about a fresh start, yeah?" He smiled at me. Once more, I found myself momentarily taken aback by his good looks. Dang it! Get yourself under control, Kerina!
"Not." I made to get off the bench and leave, but he held onto me once more.
"Don’t touch me."
"Okay, okay, I’m sorry." He raised his hands in surrender. "But can you please hear me out?"
"What do you have to say?"
"I mean, I don’t want you to get a bad image of me, even though we don’t know each other yet. I mistook your shop for a place my friend recommended. Believe it or not, I don’t just go around asking pretty girls if they want to bang."
"That’s hard to believe."
"I know," he chuckled. "I forgot to feed earlier before leaving home."
"Okay."
"You don’t believe me, do you?"
"I don’t know you."
"That’s right." He looked toward the tree line, and I followed his gaze to find a small puppy peeing in the bushes. "Well, my name is Matt. Can I at least have yours?"
"It’s Stella."
"I know you’re lying."
"How can you tell?"
"Your emotions shift when you lie. I can sense them."
"Can all incubuses do that?" I couldn’t keep the amazement out of my voice as I asked this.
Matt nodded, then shook his head. "I don’t think all of us can garner that much focus to do it."
"Right, because you’re always thinking with your privates."
He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. "Is it just toxic to me, or is it to all the incubuses you meet?"
"I am not toxic." He gave me a look, and somehow at this angle, his blue eyes almost looked a shade darker. Matt was breathtaking. Did he even realize that? "Maybe I am a bit, but it’s only because every incubus I meet either wants to have sex with me or... wants to have sex with me."
"I don’t want to have sex with you. I mean, that doesn’t mean I won’t have sex with you if you want to, do you want to have sex?”
“Matt!” I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. Matt grinned down at me, displaying those pearly white teeth. He didn’t have needle-like fangs like vampires or werewolves, but he could still bite you and leave a mark without even trying.
God, did he smell nice. I almost gave in to the urge to bury my face in the crook of his neck and inhale more of his scent. I cleared my throat, clenching my thighs. Matt noticed my little action, and I’m guessing he knew where my thoughts were headed, but apart from a small smile, he didn’t say anything.
We sat there in comfortable silence. I looked up and noticed the sun was going down, and the evening was fast approaching. I needed to get home.
“I should go. Here’s my number,” I said, offering him my phone.
“You want me to call you?” He seemed taken aback by my simple gesture.
“I wouldn’t give you my number if I didn’t want you to call me, Matt.”
“Right. Then I’ll call you…”
“Kerry.”
“Kerry. That’s a pretty name.”
“Thanks. I’ll see you sometime, I guess.”
“Definitely.” I held back a smile and walked away. My sour mood was much better now, and it was all because of Matt.
---
The house was rather quiet when I walked in. I knew both my mom and stepdad wouldn’t be around at this hour, but I had seen Silas' car in the parking lot, so I knew he was home. I felt relieved at the thought that maybe he wasn’t avoiding me after all. Still, I had to talk to him and apologize for last night.
As I prepared to go upstairs to where Silas and I had our rooms, I heard something crash in the kitchen. Retracing my steps, I thought it might be my stepbrother attempting to make lunch for me again. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case at all.
A girl was sitting on one of our counters with her legs parted, and Silas stood between them, kissing her passionately. For some reason, my heart clenched painfully in my chest.
