Chapter 1
Emerald’s point of view
The view was nice, akin to a lush sense of freedom. I hadn’t expected him to be this heartwarming, treating me to a date at the aquarium? That’s very unlike, Cane.
Not in the three years span I’ve gotten to know him. There has to be a motive.
“Our pack is invited to a neighboring pack’s mating ceremony. As our ruling Alpha, I’m expected to attend with an escort.” He paused to drag in a breath, noticeably avoiding to look into my eyes.
“You’d like for me to go with you?” Enthusiasm dipped at my expression. Because why else would he be telling me?
His features flexed as he whirled a sharp gaze at me. “You’re an omega, Emerald. I can’t be seen anywhere with you.”
I grew instantly into glum, confused as I lowered my head. “I understand…” my soft voice concurred.
He sighed audibly. “I’ve decided to attend with Sloane. She’s back from the states, and quite presentable.”
I looked up at him, aching in despair. “Your betrothed?”
I’m familiar with her. Sloane, the esteemed beta’s daughter. Fluent in her skills, and a sight to behold.
She left for the states moments after her betrothal to the pack’s Alpha was announced, to further her craft and hone her character.
“Now that she’s back, we were to proceed with our engagement. However, she proposed to get acquainted better with me first. Hence, why I’ve asked her to escort me to the ceremony.”
Words dried up in my mouth, and I was stuck gaping hopelessly at him.
“Don’t look at me like that. You knew this was alway going to happen.”
“So it’s over? We’re done from now on?” I quipped, amused by his nonchalance.
His brows furrowed, a darkened expression surfacing his edge as he grabbed me by my wrist. He caressed my palm.
“I brought you here because you said you’ve never been to an aquarium. You should enjoy yourself, I need to be somewhere.” He dropped my hand, attempting to depart.
Right before he could move an inch. “I won’t be your mistress, Kane!” I deadpanned, a stubborn glaze in my stance.
His wedding with Sloane was always inevitable, I don’t know why I ever thought I had a chance.
“That is not a discussion for now. We’ll talk about it later when the time is right. The decision isn’t up to you to make.” Curtly, he addressed as he glanced down at his wristwatch and began his walk out of my presence.
I leered after his sharp strides, a bitter feeling creeping down my system.
Yes I was an omega, an orphaned omega who had made the mistake of attending Wolf Camp in search of a purpose three years ago.
There I met Aria, daughter of the deceased Alpha and sister to Cane. She’d picked a grudge against me; said I was unfit to be among them albeit I excelled at the trials required for admission.
She was an Alpha’s daughter, powerful and well respected. I was nothing more than an orphaned omega, respected for my skills.
That got her jealous, and her jealousy grew contempt that prompted her wrath.
I became her subject for humiliation, for abuse, and for amusement. Maltreatment that left me traumatized, physically damaged, and nearly took away my left eye.
This drew the attention of the camp’s council, and parents were summoned. Cane came in to stand for his sister.
The very first time I met him.
He saw me, and perhaps it was for the pack’s reputation, his family’s name- or if it was actually his genuine sympathy.
He came to me, tended to my bruises and showed me an affection no one has ever felt for me before.
He had said, “I’m so sorry, you’ll never be hurt like this again.”
And I believed him. I swallowed every other words he said that fed into my delusions. He knew my weaknesses and used it against me, he knew I craved to be loved and he pretended to care.
I truly thought he was my savior, my knight in shining armor and it took me nothing less than moments to fall in love with him.
Now that I’m thinking about, he never loved me- it was I who loves him. He’s simply attracted to my adoration.
I could no longer concentrate at the aquarium so I decided it was time to leave. Cane already stained my mood.
My phone rang just as I stepped out, and his contact flashed on my screen. I took the call with reluctance.
“Hello?”
“Sloane will be coming over tonight for dinner. I’ve sent you a list of her preferences, get to work and make sure you bring it all to perfection tonight.”
He ended the call before I could get a chance to oppose or quested for more details. Just then, a ping beeped and the list he sent arrived on cue.
He had made me the pack’s secretary after I graduated Wolf Camp, told me so we could be closer.
What he’s demanding of me to do isn’t totally out of my responsibilities, but he still could’ve gotten somewhere else on the job.
He just had to be cruel.
I don’t blame him, perhaps things could’ve been different if I wasn’t an omega and lacked the respectable label needed to court him or be seen with him.
Sloane had that, she’s always been a perfect fit for him. They’ve been friends since birth like Cane told me, and according to him- she’s the most intelligent she-wolf he’s ever seen.
This was never going to be a Cinderella story, I am but the pauper he fancied till it’s time to get serious.
He could’ve had any staffs on this dinner job, yet he picked me. As though it was to remind me of the future- to stop me from getting hopeful.
I may not like it, but the facts were both Cane and his sister are abusers.
One abused me physically, and the other did so emotionally; more painfully.
I scrolled through my contacts, casting a long glance at the name I’ve clicked to unblock and dial.
“Hello, Alpha Christian. Are you still interested in your marriage proposal? I’m ready to accept, but there’s a condition…” my eyes snapped shut in anxiousness.
There’s only one way for me to escape this pack, and the clutches of Cane as well.
“Interesting,” his hoarse voice boomed and my lids shut open.
“Silver Gates restaurant this Saturday at 7pm . Let’s discuss over dinner.”
Saturday. That’s in six days.
Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Emerald’s point of view
The door opened, and she was guided in by the man I least expected, her arms locked around his. Cane stood tall beside her; his aura elegant, the both of them unfolding like a power couple.
Her hair was styled super neat, and her dress the most modest I’ve ever seen. She truly was an irresistible young lady.
I couldn’t help my envy.
I walked over to them, obligated to usher them over to the dinner table.
I bowed upon my appearance, custom demanded. “Good evening, Ma’am-“
“You must be Emerald.” She intercepted.
I glanced up at her, slightly confused at her familiarity. How does she know my name?
“Call me Sloane, and it’s so nice to finally meet you.” Her voice was gentle yet sharper than a razor’s edge, and her smile- arguably the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen.
Enough to whisk me breathless. She was simply mesmerizing.
“The pleasure is mine, ma’am- Sloane.” I bowed once more before I whirled around to lead the way.
Seeing Sloane, I couldn’t help but understand Cane’s cruelty. What I’m failing to understand is how he could have that and still wanted me?
Or was I a stand in for his lust since the true owner of his heart wasn’t around? That’s the only plausible intention I can think of.
I always wanted more, and he always reminded me of how I can never be enough.
My heart ached as I watched him pull a seat back for her to settle in. Something he has never done for me all through the years we’ve secretly courted.
It’s a subtle act I’m presently discerning. This polished- gentlemanly version of him, it’s not a side I’ve seen ever.
I felt recessed, watching as he served on her plate what she’d like to ask for dinner. Intentionally enacting gestures that are conditionally affectionate.
With me, he has never bothered or was simply just above acting right, but he could act perfect for his betrothed.
“Oh My God, Cane. You don’t have to be like that!” She beamed innocently. Her face radiated beauty as the large grin spread across her face.
Jealousy gnawed at my insides, she’s perfect- too perfect. I can never compete with that.
Was it even ever a competition? He was never going to pick me. That’s a fact he loves asserting over and over again.
I can’t stay here. This is as scornful as it is hurtful, and the last thing I’d like to do is slip out a reaction.
I turned around, attempting to evade the scene when his voice questioned. “Are you leaving?”
I halted, nodded positively as my response without whirling back at him.
“You need to stick around actually. You’ll be the one taking Sloane and I back to her place when she’s done with her dinner. She couldn’t come with her car,” he said.
I peeped behind and saw that he wasn’t even looking at me. The wholeness of his attention was focused on the goddess that’s seated in front of him.
Why would he demand that of me again? Was forcing me to plan this dinner not enough for him? Or perhaps he’s desperately trying to prove the point that he doesn’t belong to me.
………
The rain matched my mood, dark and gloomy. However, the sight of Sloane clutched tightly against Cane’s body at the backseat punched harder at my gut
Another thunder struck hard above the sky. Sloane whimpered, and Cane instantly wrapped himself around her.
I’m scared of the rain, he knows that and he hasn’t for once shielded me the way he did just now with her. He quite literally pushed me out on this open road to show me what it always was between us.
I continued my drive, but soon swerved to a side when the steering wheel suddenly felt stiff. I struggled for a control that never came, and had to pull on the brakes to avoid a crash on this wet track; it’d be fatal if I wasn’t careful.
“Something is wrong,” I announced, trying to see if it could be fixed by simply keying the car back into motion after my abrupt stop, but the engine failed and the car had completely shut down.
“No, no please tell me nothing is going on? Don’t tell me we’re stuck here?!” Sloane was at the verge of tears as she stared from me back at Cane for answers.
“Stay calm. I’ll have someone come get us in a few minutes,” Cane assured her. He brought out his phone and probably sent off the text. “What happened? Why did we suddenly stop in the middle of the road?”
I stared at him through lifted brows. “It’s your car, Sir.”
“Whatever.” His gaze flickered off to the girl wrapped tightly around his body. “The car will be here in a few minutes, I’m really sorry for this.”
Seconds ticked off while I did my best to ignore their mushiness displayed blankly to frustrate my peace.
I was looking out the car window, staring into the vast darkness as the heavy rain pounded mercilessly against the road.
Suddenly my eyes caught a shadow, emerging from the bush beside the road. The eyes glowed yellow and danger lurked around its aura.
The shadow approached on all fours, cautiously with slow steps and more shadows jumped out from the same place he’d emerged.
“Rogues!” I gasped, glanced back at Cane and saw that he was also taking notice of the situation.
Only then did I realize that shadows actually stepped out of both sides, to surround and trap us from escaping their attack.
“Cane, what’s going on?” Sloane was filled with fright, and she gripped tightly on Cane’s arm for comfort.
Grievous snarls leaked into the air from different sides, followed by grievous growls as an awful scratch wrecked at our car.
“I’ll deal with them,” Cane declared, serious as he struggled out of Sloane’s grip. His eyes glowed red as he opened up the side of his car.
A rogue wolf instantly charged into space to bite on him when he sent a rough kick straight to the wolf’s jaw. He got outside, becoming the object of their targets.
“Oh no…!”
I looked over at Sloane, and saw a rogue wolf trying to enter from the space Cane had exited through. She quickly turned to the other side and jumped out of the car.
The rogue wolf sighted me and bared his fangs, gnashing for flesh.
Panic filed into my system as I rushed to unclip my seatbelt. I hurried and was nearly pummeled before I narrowly escaped.
Except I turned around and found out why Sloane stood pale and rooted to a spot.
Two wolves approached, fangs snapped open and we were the targets of their attack.
“Cane!” I screamed for him, fear lashing out at me as the rogues closed in on their distance.
“Cane!”
“Cane!!”
Sloane joined me to yell and I saw his figure leap into the space in front of us- no, not in front of us. In front of Sloane, he took defense in front of Sloane.
And when the rogues charged, he could only hold off the one charging at Sloane.
I stood open, defenseless and screamed as the wolf’s fangs sank into my shoulder, bashing me down to the ground.
“Cane!” Sloane’s voice came out terrified.
I glanced at her through my hurting eyes and saw that a wolf had also gotten to her.
Claws plunged into my stomach. “Help! Please! Cane!” I coughed out blood.
Cane ignored my screams like they weren’t crucial, he rushed over to Sloane, fought off the rogue that bit into her leg.
A loud horn pierced the cold night, and the wolf slashing me open stopped. He retreated and backed into the darkness.
“The car’s here, hang in there.” Cane’s voice sounded distant. I forced my eyes open to see Sloane’s scooped up in his arms as he rushed out of my sight.
“I’m dying,” I muttered out barely with effort. My whole body was a bloody mess as the rain pounded on me.
I screamed, I shouted, I begged, and none caught his attention. None caught the attention of the man that I love, and thought was in love with me too.
He said I’ll never be chosen, and he showed me that when I saw his car sped off into the rainy night forgetting that I’m part of the attack.
He left me. I could die for all he cares.
At this point, I’m happy to die. No one deserves to be this scorned, no one!

Chapter 3
Emerald’s point of view
I woke up with a pounding ache in my head, followed by the crisp scent of antiseptic as my eyes scanned my surroundings.
The room was bright, scantily furnished and looked exactly like a ward sectioned at a hospital. Was I admitted?
I should be dead, but it doesn’t quite feel like it’s afterlife yet. My whole body does feel weird, like my muscles recently contended the fiercest war against life; a war it seems like I won.
“You’re awake. How do you feel?”
I glanced up at the sound of the professional voice, the pretty face of the doctor scanning over me.
“Like I should be dead,” I answered honestly. How did I survive? Why did I survive? Why wouldn’t I just die?!
I recalled my last moment. I was left for dead. Who got to me and brought me here?
Could they be Cane? The same one who left me for dead? I don’t think so.
I saw my phone on the table beside me, it was still dead and looked destroyed.
“I’m glad you’re not. What’s your name?” She quested as she opened up on the notepad she had in her hand.
“Emerald.”
“You’re really strong, Emerald. I never thought you’d make it when you were brought in yesterday, and I must commend your healing system. You appear almost like you weren’t just at the brink of death.” She stopped whatever she was jotting down to give me a proud look, a huge smile on her face.
“Who brought me here?”
The smile on her face shrank, and her attention lowered back to the notes she was making.
“Is it Alpha Cane?” I wanted to be right so bad, but a bigger part of me knew the truth. I guess the cord might be cut, but there’s still a string attached.
“The person has requested us to keep their identity anonymous. All that matters right now is your response to treatment.”
“I’m done here.” I tried to get up, and winced sharply at the pain that shot through my system
I glanced over myself, felt the bandage that wrapped a cast around my left shoulder, and all over my stomach. It hurts. It hurts like hell.
Images of claws slashing at my chest, fangs sinking into my flesh, the horror flashed at my mind and tears rushed at my eyes as I forced myself to sit up.
“I need to go!” I announced, two meanings to my statement. I’m not just leaving this premises, I’m walking out of Cane’s life. Forever.
“There’s still more treat-“
“I’ll heal.” I forced myself up to stand on my feet, barely balanced as my entire body fought to betray my determination.
No!
I pushed into motion, and began my walk out of the hospital room. I managed my steps carefully to avoid a crash from the chaos my system was currently shrouded in.
I’d gotten to the lobby, a few meters away from the exit when those doors pushed open to permit her entry.
Her red heels came in first, followed by the essence of her presence. It’s Aria. How is she here? Who invited her here?
Her cold striking gaze surveyed till my figure fell victim to her inspection.
At the sight of me, a smirk cracked on her lips as she strutted over to where I stood frozen.
Fear gripped me hard like a vice. When did she come back? Why did she have to come back?
She got to me, beaming like she’d just won a lottery. “The universe knew how pissed I am at her; she just had to deliver you to me first.” She chuckled, eyeing me from the down to my face; pure disdain expressed in her eyes.
“I may have just gotten here, but the news got to me first. What happened, Emerald? You ran out of magic to keep my brother locked in your charm?”
News? What news? Has there been news made about the rogue attack? And that I was abandoned and left to die?
“Looking me in the eye, how dare you?” She reached for my neck as she seized a firm hold, aggressively might I add.
I coughed, choking as I quickly lowered my gaze away from her face. “I’m s-sorry,” I stuttered out an apology, shoulder slumped in full anxiousness.
“Sorry?” She quizzed. “Are you sorry for getting me kicked out of camp or turning my brother against me? Which are you sorry for? Because trust me bitch, I’m back and ready to remind you of your worth!”
She shoved me into the ground. My eyes snapped closed as the pain reached into the safe spaces in my body, dominating me whole as I pushed a tear back in.
No one could dare interfere. She’s the alpha’s sister, and I'm nobody.
I felt her stoop to my level as her breath fanned closer. “The rightful Luna of the pack has returned, what do you think will become of you now?” She whispered, towering with her lips inches away from my ear.
She giggled out of mockery. “I told you back then, that I’ll be back on the day of your rejection.”
“This is just the beginning, Emerald. I want you gone from the pack house before noon today, it’s either that or I get you banned. Got it?”
She yanked on my ear, which forced me into a vigorous nod. She pulled away, adjusted her posture and walked off the scene.
I was now left on the floor, humiliated once again and for what? Loving the wrong man?
I sniffed as I gathered what was left of my dignity and forced myself back to my feet.
“Who is she?”
“How did she get on the bad side of the Alpha’s family?”
I ignored the flying comments as I ran out of the building, already at the very edge of breaking down.
I should’ve died yesterday, there was no reason to have survived. No reason!
I just have to survive till Saturday. The sooner I have that dinner date, the sooner I’m out of this hell for good.
