Chapter 1
Liza’s POV The picture of Serena and Brandon in an intimate position flashed across my screen, making me halt for a second. I was not supposed to be surprised but I was at that moment. Because one is my sister, and the other is my fiancé, who is about to become my husband. The front door opened and I stepped in when someone suddenly grabbed me. It was my sister, Serena. “Liza, do you really have to register your marriage with Brandon?” her grasp on my arm tightened and her face was filled with rage. “The Stone family is powerful and strict. You've just returned from the slum and do not understand their customs. Brandon does not care about you; marrying him would not make you happy.” She said all of that in one breath. I wasn't marrying Brandon for love or want. My decision to marry him was based on a commitment to fulfil to my late grandfather. Before I could say anything, Serena let out a piercing scream and my heart skipped a beat. She staggered backward, letting go of her grasp on my arm as she slammed into the metal fence behind her. I rushed towards her, and she let out a loud yelp of pain while clutching her stomach. When I touched her, she looked up at me with tears in her eyes, her voice shaking with indignation. “Sister…why would you do that? I know you are jealous of me and Brandon but you're the one who's marrying him! I merely said those things to warn you about how difficult it could be for a girl like you to join the Stone family. Was it worth hitting me in anger?” I froze with disbelief. I didn't touch her. “Serena?!” Brandon screamed and I turned around to see him rushing towards our direction. I stepped back. Without sparing me a glance, he threw an arm around Serena. “Are you okay?” A tear dropped from Serena’s eyes as she looked up at me with those big grey eyes of hers, blaming me for what I did not do. Brandon got the message and turned to me with an icy glare. Before I knew it, Brandon was a step away from me. “Bitch! You dared to push her? Who do you think you are?” “I didn't push…” I got cut short by a slap from Brandon. My jaws dropped as I staggered back, feeling the stung of the slap which left a painful imprint of his fingertips on my face. From the corner of my eyes, I saw someone stalking towards us and I turned to see it is father. The only man I have known all my life as my father but never acted like a father to me. “Serena and Brandon have been in love since childhood,” he began as our eyes locked. “I didn't expect you to want to take your younger sister’s boyfriend!” I opened my mouth to talk but he cut me short with a wave of his hand as he continued. “You have been nothing but a disgrace since you returned from the slum we came to pick you up from. Someone like you can't fit into a family like the Stone’s. They will never welcome someone like you, you're just going to shame the Sinclair names!” Really? So Serena would be welcome instead? “We've already decided,” he announced as he folded his arms across his chest, his eyes filled with nothing but hatred for me, just like Brandon’s. “Serena will take your place as Brandon’s wife and become a part of the Stone Family, not you. She's the only one who fits in with that family.” I shook my head, the stung from the slap very much present. “Apparently, this was all planned while I was absent. But sorry to say that Serena can never take my place this time!” I had no idea where the courage was coming from, even though I knew there was little or nothing I could do to change the narrative. Brandon is holding onto Serena dearly like she was a fragile egg, while watching me with pure disgust. Serena on the other hand, was feigning the wince on her face while my father took a step closer to me threateningly. I stepped back again with fright. “She will and there is nothing you or anyone would do about that!” I was brought back for this. The engagement between Brandon and me was arranged by my grandfather. At first, they only thought my grandfather was worried about me and wanted to find me a good match. Just this alone made my greedy family restless. They planned to have Serena replace me and marry the man my grandfather had chosen for me. Not to mention, when they later found out that my grandfather had arranged to transfer most of the company’s shares to me after my marriage, they realized they couldn’t let me marry. They wanted the shares and they wanted Serena to replace me. To replace every bit of my existence. I grit my teeth in annoyance. “In the end, I was no more than a piece in your game, right?” “Watch your tone, Liza!” Father yelled, cold chill racing down my spine. After all these years, I still fear him and his violent nature. “Serena was bred and polished by this family to be the ideal lady; aristocratic, accomplished and sophisticated. You stand no chance with her. You are just a country bumpkin whom we took care of. We took you out of the slum and provided you with a life of luxury you could only dream. What more could you want?” I inclined my head slightly, my eyes glistening with amusement. “Luxury? Comfort? Are you sure that's it? Or is this just a method of yours to rip me off of Grandpa’s shares which he left in my name?” The sinister smirk on father’s face disappeared immediately and Brandon turned to stare at him I continued. “Grandpa had just a single rule and that was for me to be married to inherit the 65% shares of the Sinclair Corporation, making me the dominant shareholder. I think I get the whole point now; you are not just replacing me with Serena. You'd rather I never married at all so I can never get the shares and I may always be under your control, don't you?” His face flickered with worry but it disappeared quickly. Before anyone else could say anything, Serena let out another yelp, grabbing her tummy. “My belly hurts. Ah.” Brandon gasped when he saw blood polled beneath Serena, staining the immaculate tiles red. Serena clung to Brandon, her voice shaking with panic. “Brandon, please save me! Save our child.” At the mention of child, I froze. Is this one of Serena’s game or is she serious right now? The Serena I have known all my life is a hypocrite at heart. She is probably playing the same game with Brandon. He was just too blind to see that. “What?!” Brandon exclaimed in shock. Her weeping filled the air and Father rushed to her too. “I'm so sorry father, I'm sorry Brandon. I didn't mean to keep any of this away from you two. I didn't know how to inform you because my sister insisted on marrying Brandon. I didn't want to upset her with the news of me carrying your child, Brandon. I believed I would be able to raise this child alone. At the very least, I figured this baby could serve as a memento of the years we spent together. Forgive me!” “It’s ok, princess. You will be fine and your child will be too.” Father assured her as he eased her onto Brandon’s arms. Brandon turned around hastily to take her to the hospital when he met my eyes again. “If anything happens to Serena or the baby, I swear you'll regret ever being born.” With that said, he raced out with Serena in his arms. My father spared me a last digustful look before running after them. I watched with a faint sneer as the reality dawned on me. Serena was playing a game she was good at. They didn't want me married and Brandon was a pawn in their game, just like me. For me to ruin the Sinclairs, I needed to get the shares somehow and for me to get the shares, there was only one way out. The only way to achieve that was to marry someone else. And it had to be today.
Chapter 2
Gavin’s POV Another quick glance at my watch indicated that it was past time for my wedding and my bride was nowhere to be found. I stepped away from my sleek Maserati car which Eric, my chauffeur drove here with me. I walked towards him. He has a phone glued to his ear and the moment he noticed I was coming, he turned around to face me squarely. “Young master, the Reed family is doing everything they can to find Miss Reed. There may have been some complications and I am afraid we'll have to wait a little longer.” I almost snorted. It was already half minutes past 11 and he was expecting me to still be hopeful about my bride showing up? I was done. “We've waited for 30 minutes already,” I said, with a chilly tone. “My time is precious and you know that too. Just inform the Reed family that there is no need to search for her any longer. Tell them the marriage is off.” Eric hesitated, unsure of how to react. “But the old chairman–” I cut him off abruptly. “The former chairman favors this marriage. I, however will not coerce an unwilling participate into a union like this. Miss Reed is obviously uninterested and I respect that so call it off now!” I ordered, leaving no room for any debate as I turned to leave when I bump into a woman. The irritation on my face disappeared quickly when she flashed me a beautiful smile. She was wearing a modest canvas purse thrown over one shoulder, her long legs highlighted by the big sweater she was swearing. Her hair was loosely knotted, and her pale skin sparkled in the sun. Her delicate features were remarkable but it was the malicious sparkle in her eyes that drew me in. “Did your bride run off?” She inquired, her tone cheerful and I raise a brow. Without waiting for my reply, she continued. “It appears we’re in the same boat. My fiance didn't run off actually, he abandoned me so what do you say about a deal between us?” I kept my gaze fixed on her even when she stretched her hand forward for a handshake. As a business man, I'm sure taking her hand meant sealing the deal when I didn't even know her from Adam. Am I about to be married to a total stranger? She squinted her brows when I didn't take her hand. Then she rephrased. “Why don't we get married instead?” Finally, I found my voice. “And why exactly should I marry you, a stranger?” She shrugged indifferently, like any of this didn't mean a thing to her. “For starters, if you marry me, you will receive half of the 65% of Sinclair Corporation’s Shares. Isn't that a good enough reason?” I am piqued with curiosity now, my brows etched up. The shares of Sinclair Corporation don’t mean much to me. What I own is far more than the entire Sinclair Corporation combined. However, the mischievous, determined, and confident sparkle in her eyes made me interested in hearing her out. After all, as long as I remain unmarried, I will continue to face countless troubles. She pointed to my chauffeur who was within earshot with his eyes slightly widened at the offer before me. “I overheard your chat with him. Your family is obviously pressuring you to marry and your bride has ran off. If you marry me, you will not only satisfy their demands, but you will also get an interest in Sinclair Corporation and that can only happen if you marry me. For ordinary people, this is a huge profit. So you see, it's a win-win situation.” That carefree grin was back on her face, making the whole situation absurd. Why would she give me half of the 65% of Sinclair Corporations in the first place? Before I could ask her that, she fished out a paper from her canvas purse and stretched it to me. I took it and scanned through it. When I saw her name and her signature at the end of the paper, I stilled. She was Liza. Liza Sinclair. The moment I saw her name, I smiled because I knew her. I've heard stories that the Sinclair family's eldest daughter has been brought back from the slum. Supposedly sick, reliant on medication, arrogant, and nasty. The stories formed an ugly portrait of her. But today, I saw her in person, and she was very different from the rumors. There was a cunning sparkle in her eyes—beautiful, even a little adorable. More importantly, she clearly saw me as just an ordinary stranger on the street. I'm curious to see how she will react once she realizes who I am. “Well?” Liza inquired, her tone firm and confident. “Do we have a deal?” "Why did you choose me?" I raised an eyebrow, curious about her explanation. "Because you're the most handsome one on this street, and I like good-looking men," she said without a hint of guilt. Her answer amused me greatly. My eyes met her brown almond eyes. So brown that I couldn't help but notice I hadn’t seen a color like that my entire life. When I didn't reply for some moment, she took a step back and turned to go when I grabbed her roughly, pulling her to me. Her body slammed into mine and a soft gasp escaped her lips. “Why the hurry?” I found myself asking, staring at her plump lips. She gulped down nervously and wiped a tongue over her lower lip. “I have to be married today. I figured you were not interested. Or are you in?” I found myself chuckling with amusement as I freed her from my grasp. There was no point wasting time. She was obviously not a fake. “I'm in.” She nodded with satisfaction. “Can we go to register now?” “I came prepared,” she flashed me another smile that made me enthralled for a second. “Don't worry, once we have the marriage registered, I will transfer the shares to you as promised, ok?” I nodded with a genuine smile. “Ok.” Liza opened her arms with an excited grin on her face. “Shall we go get married now, stranger?” I stared at her for a moment and was about to answer when my Eric stepped in front of me with a worried expression. He looked like he was on the edge of collapse at the fact that I am about to marry a total stranger. Does it matter? It doesn't. Anyway, if I don’t get married today, I’ll have countless blind dates arranged for me tomorrow. I might as well marry a girl who seems interesting. With determination, I entwined my arm with Liza Sinclair’s as I muttered. “Let's get married, stranger.” She hesitated, the usual glint of mischief back in her eyes. “There’s one more thing, though. I think you need to know before we tie the knot.” Eric gave me the I-told-you-so-look and I shifted my attention back to the woman whose arm were still entwined with mine. “Let's hear it.” She heaved a deep sigh of relief. “Actually I intended to move out of the Sinclair villa. I was supposed to be married to my fiance and move to his place like I said earlier, but he abandoned me for my sister so here I am.” “Cut to the chase,” I told her impatiently. She smiled warmly and announced. “After the marriage, I'm going to be moving to your house.” I stepped backward and blinked. “What?!” Is she really that eager for my body?
Chapter 3
Liza’s POV As soon as we were both registered marriage, my phone began to ring, breaking the moment of silence between my new husband and I. It made me realize I didnt even know his name yet. Waving that aside, I fished out my phone from my purse to see Victoria’s name flashing across my screen. Victoria is my stepmother and Serena’s biological mother. She got married to my father barely a week after my mom died. A wicked grin left the corners of my lips. I wonder how she would react when I tell her I got married just a minutes ago. She would go ballistic. Instead of picking up, I ignored her call and put the phone back into my purse. My husband raised a brow at me and I shrugged. We both walked out in silence. I already told him I'd be moving to his house. Even though he hesitated for a moment until I told him his father or grandfather or whoever wanted him married wouldn't believe it was a real marriage unless we live under the same roof. He succumbed immediately and it made me feel proud of myself. As soon as we were out of the courthouse, my phone began to ring again. “You should pick up, it might be urgent,” my husband stated, making me bring out the phone again to see it was still Victoria. I knew she would blow my phone up with calls the moment she found out what happened at the house earlier; about how I supposedly pushed her precious daughter and how she was bleeding. “Liza!” Her voice boomed into my ears the moment I picked up. I shut my eyes in irritation. “I've only been taking care of you since you returned! I recruited the greatest doctors to treat your so-called ailment and I spent a fortune on your tonics and pharmaceuticals. I did everything you wanted for you and this is what I get in return?! Do you even remember how I hired special tutors to help you with basic etiquettes which you had no knowledge of. I've tried to shape you into the sophisticated woman that the Stone Family needed and I think I've been considerate and patient enough with your stupid ungrateful self. How dare you do that to my daughter? Is this what I get in return for all my kindness?!” She was rambling and I only listened to half of her words because the phone was inches away from my ear due to how loud she was. “Not only did you snatch my daughter’s fiance but you also made her lose her baby! How could someone be so cold-hearted and cruel as you? I treated you with sincerity, Liza, but you returned it with betrayal and cruelty. Mark my words, Liza, you will die a horrific death for this!” My stranger husband must have heard the last word because he shifted on his foot and stood in front of me with his arms folded in curiosity. Looking like a true husband, ready to begin his responsibilities as my husband indeed. I let out a giggle and Victoria fell silent, probably in shock. “Did you just accuse me of stealing your daughter’s fiance?” I asked in a mocking tone. “Forgive me, Victoria, but I need to remind you that I am the rightful eldest daughter of the Sinclair family. The fiance you are referring to was once my fiance, remember? It was your daughter who blatantly forced herself into my engagement and stole Brandon away from me!” I was on the bringe of losing it. I am tempted to curse out loud but the presence of this man before me stopped me. Victoria didn't say a word. I must have hit the nail on the nervespot. “But then, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. Afterall, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right? Back then, I remember how you stole my father from my mother. Now your precious little whore of a daughter is following in your footsteps. I would say it's a fitting legacy…” “Liza!” She interrupted, her breath coming in hard. “Let me finish!” I snapped at her, anger flooding through my veins. “Let me give you some advice, Victoria. You should get yourself ready for me. You and your silly little brat, Serena. I, Liza Sinclair, will make sure you pay for all your atrocities in full. I will regain all you stole from my mother, as well as everything your daughter took from me. Well, excluding Brandon. She can have him all to herself, I don't need that jerk!” A scream tore from her gut and I spared my stranger husband a glance to see him shaking his head with a smile curving up his lips. I was about to disconnect the call when I heard my father’s voice on the phone. “Liza, I'll give you 20 minutes to get to the hospital now and apologize to Serena. You are the reason for her miscarriage. I’ll let this go if you kneel and apologize to her sincerely. I'll even speak to Brandon on your behalf and urge him to forgive you.” Despite the pain in my heart at the betrayal of my father, I chuckled softly. “Father, I don't owe you or anyone anything. I’d apologize to Serena over my dead body and for Brandon, I meant it when I said I don't need that jerk!” I was so sure he heard my conversation with Victoria, hence the reason for the angry tone. “Liza…” I cut off his yelling. “For your information, I got married 10 minutes ago so Brandon can go to hell for all I care and you should begin to prepare to step down as CEO of Sinclair Corporation.” Without waiting for any reaction, I disconnected the call and let out a deep sigh of relief. That was half of the words I have kept stuck inside of me for years. I finally let them out and frankly, it felt like a huge load had been lifted off my chest. I began to feel the need to cry it out but I couldn't. Not in front of this stranger-husband of mine, staring at me with those intense green eyes of his that seemed to send a cold chill through me. “It seems you've stirred up a quite bit of trouble, haven't you?” He said, pointing to my phone. I pushed back the choking tide of panic and the tears threatening to spill with some force. I couldn't break down. “Don't worry, you will receive the shares I promise but it will take some time. I need to deal with the Sinclairs first.” I mentioned to him and walked past him. I saw the chauffeur from earlier besides a sleek Maserati car and I figured it was his. He caught up with me. “I wasn't talking about the shares. Are you okay, though?” The concerned tone made me halt in my tracks. If it wasn't the shares, then what was it? He jumped at my offer because of the shares after all. He seemed to have noticed the suspicious behind my eyes. “It seems you don't know who I am.” His tone was light yet tingled with curiosity. I blinked in realization, remembering that I didn't know his name. “What's your name?” I face him squarely, trying to hide my embarrassment for speaking that way in front of him earlier. “Check the certificate,” he instructed me with a tone of command. I rolled my eyes at him. I reached into my bag and pulled the folded document out. “It doesn't matter who you are. After I finalize everything with the Sinclairs, I'll transfer the shares to you and have….” I stopped talking mid-way when my gaze fell on the name printed on the certificate: Gavin Stone. I blinked several times to be sure I was seeing the right word and it was not one of the figments of my imaginations. The same Gavin Stone? Could he truly be the mysterious member of the notorious Stone Family? The same family my father had just stopped me from marrying? I stared up at him again and his reaction mirrored mine. My eyes widened and my jaws dropped in total disbelief. “You are Gavin Stone?” With a nonchalant attitude and a quiet grunt of acknowledgement, it was confirmed that he was truly Gavin Stone and I was married to him. So, the most handsome stranger I randomly picked on the street turned out to be the uncle of my cheated fiancé?
