Chapter 1 — I Am Back (edited preview)
Serena's POV
"No!"
I came awake with a scream.
For a few seconds, I could still feel the nightmare inside my body. The pain had not fully left. It hid deep within my bones, sharp and grinding, as if invisible hands were still crushing them piece by piece.
I gasped for air. My chest heaved sharply beneath my nightgown, and the cold rushed into my lungs.
Then I saw firelight.
Warm amber light flickered across the room. The hearth was burning quietly, its flames soft and steady.
There was no snow beneath me.
No locked gate.
No storm.
I was alive.
I looked down and saw ivory silk against my skin. Over my heart, a tiny silver wolf flower had been stitched into the fabric.
For one long moment, I could not move.
Then I understood.
Time had brought me back.
The bonding ceremony had only taken place that afternoon. I had not yet fled from the Blackrock Pack on my wedding night. The elders there had not yet broken both my legs. I had not yet been dumped outside the Silvermoon Pack like refuse and left to freeze in a blizzard on the Northern Frontier.
The memories struck me all at once.
That afternoon, I had married Kane.
Kane Blackwood.
The Alpha of the Blackrock Pack. The tyrant whose name was feared across the Northern Frontier.
Before everything fell apart, he had been the strongest werewolf warrior of his generation. Then his second-in-command betrayed him. Kane was badly wounded, and his wolf sank into a sleep no one could rouse.
Now people spoke of him as a ruined man.
A scarred face. A wheelchair. A body that could no longer shift.
The bride chosen for him was never supposed to be me.
It should have been Cecilia, my younger sister.
She had been born only three minutes after me. When we were thirteen, her Awakening revealed the Silver Wolf bloodline. From that day on, everyone called her the Moon Goddess's chosen vessel. Across the Northern Frontier, she became the Omega every powerful man wanted as his mate.
I was the opposite.
My own Awakening had been a failure. I could not hear my wolf, could not feel her, could not summon even the faintest sign that she existed. An Omega without a wolf held little standing in my family.
The pack shaman called me a heretic.
A curse.
A burden that would one day drag the family down.
They had been right in the cruelest way.
The Moon Goddess had not given my wolf to me.
She had given her to Cecilia—a flawless silver wolf, bright enough for everyone to worship.
So when Elder Moira of the Blackrock Pack arrived with a marriage contract and demanded the second daughter of the Silvermoon Pack as Alpha Kane's bride, the entire household collapsed into panic.
Everyone knew the rumors.
Every Omega who married Kane died.
Cecilia cried until she could barely breathe. She said she did not want to die. Father held her like she was the most precious thing in the world and said, "I will never send you to your death."
That was how I became the offering.
They dressed me in a wedding gown that had never belonged to me. I stood in the biting wind of the Blackrock Pack's rear garden and completed the ceremony beside an Alpha whose face I barely dared to look at.
In my last life, I had been foolish enough to believe Cecilia on that very night.
She told me to run.
She promised she would help me find my fated mate, Damian Bloodblade.
I never made it far.
Elder Moira caught me before I could escape the territory. That old woman broke my kneecaps with one blow, then had me thrown outside the gates of the Silvermoon Pack like trash.
I lay face-down in the snow.
Blood seeped from beneath me, turning my white wedding dress red.
Through the wind and snow, I raised my head and looked at the silver wolf relief carved into the gate. The longer I stared, the blurrier it became.
No one opened the door.
Father was behind it.
Mother was behind it.
Cecilia was behind it.
So were all the pack members I had spent my life trying to please.
Cecilia's voice floated through the gate, cold and clear.
"Do not open it. Serena will bring disaster to the whole pack."
That night, the cold killed me.
Just before the last of my strength faded, I heard the Moon Goddess's oracle.
Only then did I learn the truth.
I was the one she had chosen all along.
On the day of my Awakening, my own mother had put wolfsbane into my water. My wolf had not failed to awaken. She had been forced into sleep.
I died knowing that.
My body stiffened in the snow.
Then someone came.
A dark figure in a wheelchair stopped beside me in the storm and stayed there for a long time.
As my consciousness slipped away, I heard wheels crunching through snow.
Then a quiet sigh.
"Bring her up," a hoarse voice ordered.
A guard lifted me and placed me onto his wheelchair.
The last thing I felt was a pair of hands against my forehead.
Rough hands.
Burned hands.
Hands so hot they almost hurt.
Kane Blackwood.
The Alpha of the Blackrock Pack.
The greatest werewolf general the Northern Frontier had ever known.
The crippled tyrant everyone feared.
Chapter 2 — Kane Blackwood (edited preview)
Kane's POV
I could not tell whether she had really been asleep.
But the moment she left the bed and walked toward me, something inside me shifted.
Ripfang moved.
My wolf, silent for years, gave a low, eager growl in my mind.
Kane. I can feel our mate.
I hated it at once.
Six years earlier, Ripfang had reacted the same way to my first mate.
She had been my childhood companion, a warrior from the Blackrock Pack. I trusted her. I bonded with her.
Then she turned on me in battle.
She broke our mate bond while I was weakened, slashed my legs, tore open my face with her claws, and set fire to my clothes.
Before that day, I had planned a future with her.
When the war ended, I would bring her flowers. I would ask her to be mine in front of everyone. She would become the Luna of the Blackrock Pack, and we would have pups of our own.
All of that died before she did.
I fought back with what strength I had left. When she realized she could not kill me, she used her own claws to cut open her throat. Her blood sprayed across my hands.
Her last words were screamed into my face.
"Alpha Kane, I will never belong to you!"
Then she fell.
Only later did I discover whose daughter she was.
My enemy's.
After that, Ripfang vanished into silence. The bond was gone. My legs were ruined. My heart core was damaged.
For three years, my wolf did not answer me.
My mate was dead.
I thought the Moon Goddess had punished me.
I thought Ripfang had died with the bond.
When I returned to the Northern Frontier, my uncle, Enzo Blair—the Alpha King of the North and supreme ruler of the werewolf clans—named me great general of the northern territories.
The world gave me a new name after that.
The crippled Alpha.
The violent tyrant.
Kane Blackwood of the Blackrock Pack.
Then tonight came.
An Omega in a white nightgown stood before me. Her wolf had not even awakened, yet she brought back a mating pull I had not felt in years.
Her cheeks were flushed. Her fingers trembled.
Still, she did not retreat.
"Alpha Kane, we need to form a mate bond."
I studied her. "Are you afraid of me?"
Most Omegas could barely look me in the eye.
She answered, "No. I'm just nervous."
She reached for my wheelchair, as if to push it for me.
I stopped her hand.
It was not because I disliked her touch.
It was because Ripfang's response was too fierce. If she touched me then, I was not sure I could hold my restraint.
Ripfang had awakened, and he wanted to prove it.
Black fur spread across my body as he seized control. I braced my hands on the wheelchair's arms and pushed myself upward. The strength I had kept buried for three years surged through me, and in a single movement, I left the chair and landed on the bed.
She startled, but only for a second.
Then she steadied herself.
My gaze fell to her throat.
The neckline of her nightgown was low. When I leaned closer, her scent reached me clearly.
Medicinal herbs.
Clean, bitter, strangely familiar.
The Silvermoon Pack had sent me the daughter they considered useless.
But Ripfang would not stir for something useless.
He certainly would not wake for it.
Her eyes seemed to read the thought as it crossed my mind. My heart beat hard against my ribs. What Ripfang had shown her was enough proof.
I was not crippled.
She looked at me with unnerving calm.
"You're not crippled, Alpha Kane. Why pretend that you are?"
There was no terror in her voice.
Only curiosity.
An unawakened Omega questioning an Alpha like that either had a death wish or truly did not know fear.
Her eyes were pale green. Cold, clear, almost like jade under winter light.
No one had ever looked at me that way.
Ripfang, however, was delighted.
She knows our secret now, Kane. Good. She'll be our mate.
I ignored him.
I asked, "I thought you were afraid of me. People who are afraid usually know better than to ask questions."
"I'm not afraid of you."
"You said you were nervous."
"Nervous is not the same as afraid." She drew in a breath. "I know you won't kill me."
"Why? You should have known the stories. Before you, every Omega sent to the Blackrock Pack for a marriage alliance has died."
But she only said, "Call it intuition, Alpha Kane."
Intuition.
Damn her.
How could an Omega who had not even awakened her wolf have instincts that sharp?
Ripfang growled again.
Kane, she has teeth. I like her. I want this one. She's ours.
Inwardly, I snapped back at him. Our mate is dead, Ripfang. She died on the battlefield three years ago. This girl is a scapegoat from the Silvermoon Pack. She may even be a spy.
Ripfang went quiet.
But I knew him.
There was only one thought in that wolf's head.
Mate.
I told her to turn off the lights.
For a moment, she hesitated. Then she crossed the carpet barefoot, so quietly that I barely heard her steps.
Moonlight slipped in through the curtains and laid a thin silver line along her calf.
Ripfang noticed.
So did I.
My throat tightened.
My wolf had returned without warning, and I had gone too long without a woman. Desire came up too fast, too sharp.
I wanted to claim her.
Then she spoke first.
"Alpha Kane, I will become the Luna of the Blackrock Pack."
I nearly laughed.
Not because the words were ridiculous, though they should have been.
It was her tone.
Steady.
Certain.
As if she had already decided the matter and was only informing me.
Did she understand what had happened to the Omegas before her?
None of them survived.
She could not even call her wolf, yet she was speaking of becoming my Luna.
Interesting.
Her family had cast her away. She had been given to the feared Alpha tyrant of the North. And still, she did not cry.
I asked, "Your name."
She answered, "Alpha Kane, my name is Serena."
Serena.
I repeated it silently.
The name left a faint bitterness in my mouth.
Before I could speak again, Ripfang seized control of my body once more and roared inside me.
Serena! I like you. I'll make you the Luna of the Blackrock Pack.
Chapter 3 — Putting on a Show (edited preview)
Serena's POV
"Come to bed."
While I was still standing there, unsure what to do, the man on the bed spoke without warmth.
My heart gave a hard jolt.
I gripped the collar of my nightgown and edged closer, one small step at a time.
Before I could climb onto the mattress, Kane turned suddenly. His hand closed around my wrist, and with one sharp pull, he dragged me down.
I let out a startled sound as I fell onto the bed and landed against a solid chest.
His shoulders were broad. Even through his shirt, the muscles in his arms felt firm and unyielding. My heartbeat went wild.
"Make a sound." He lowered his head until his mouth was almost against the shell of my ear. His voice was rough and low, vibrating somewhere deep in his chest.
"What… what kind of sound?" My voice shook.
He did not answer. One hand locked around my waist; the other caught the strap of my nightgown.
The silk tore with a sharp sound that cut through the silence. Cold air spilled over my shoulder, and I drew in a quick breath, lifting my hands to cover myself.
"Wait—what are you doing?"
"Quiet. Someone is coming. I'm giving them the scene they're waiting for. Don't move, Serena."
He tore the fabric again. The nightgown split from the neckline all the way down to my waist, leaving me exposed to the chill. Goose bumps rose across my skin.
I tried to shove him away, but his weight pinned me so completely that I could barely shift.
Then I understood.
In werewolf society, an Alpha and an Omega's wedding night came with an ugly, unspoken rule. During the bonding, the Omega had to be heard. The louder the sounds, the more complete the union was considered, and the more likely others were to claim the Moon Goddess had approved the marriage.
Some packs even sent elders to stand outside the bedroom door and listen.
If the room stayed silent until morning, the bride would be labeled "unworthy" and sent back in disgrace.
So Kane was not asking me to make noise for him.
He was asking me to make noise for the people outside.
We were under watch. Maybe there was someone beyond the door. Maybe every ear in this house had turned toward this room.
I bit down hard and forced out a small, uncertain cry.
It came out soft and brief, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
In the darkness, Kane's eyes dimmed for a heartbeat.
The amber of his pupils deepened, as though a flame had caught somewhere inside them.
"Again. Don't stop."
My face burned so badly I could hardly stand it. I shut my eyes and forced myself to continue.
One sound after another slipped out of me, low, strained, and breathless. Shame crawled over my skin.
After nearly an hour, my throat felt scraped raw.
Then Kane moved.
Not the way I had feared.
He rolled suddenly and pressed me more firmly beneath him. One hand cradled the back of my head while he lowered his face into the hollow of my neck.
His lips touched the skin on my nape.
Then his teeth closed there.
He did not tear into me. He held back, but the bite was still strong—strong enough to hurt, not strong enough to draw blood.
The edge of his teeth pressed through my skin, stopping just short of breaking it. Pain sparked down my spine.
My body locked up. The sound that escaped me this time was not an act. I had truly been frightened.
His breath struck the back of my neck, hot and uneven.
He kept his teeth there and did not move.
We were performing for whoever might be listening outside.
The pressure of his bite changed from moment to moment. Sometimes light, sometimes heavier. Each shift made me tense and gasp before I could stop myself.
I lost track of time.
Maybe it lasted only minutes.
Maybe longer.
At last, he released me. When his mouth left my neck, the skin there was damp and cold, marked by a ring of teeth, but there was still no blood.
"That's enough." His voice sounded rougher than before. "Be quiet."
I obeyed immediately.
He moved off me, and the cold rushed back in. Yet the spot on my neck where he had bitten me still felt hot.
He shifted to the other side of the bed and finally let go of me.
I sat up, grabbed the blanket, and wrapped it tightly around myself.
My whole body was shaking. Not from the cold. From that bite. It burned beneath my skin even though it had never bled.
After hesitating for a moment, I pulled another blanket over him too.
If he got sick, I would be the first one blamed tomorrow.
Being Luna of the Blackrock Pack was clearly not going to be easy.
The thought drifted through my exhausted mind. Soon after, sleep finally pulled me under.
Morning light slipped through the gap in the curtains.
I turned over, and the tip of my nose brushed against something rough.
I opened my eyes.
A face filled my vision.
One side of it was drawn tight and scarred, dark red burns stretching from temple to jaw. Across the other side, a claw mark ran from his brow bone down to the corner of his mouth.
"Ah—!"
I shot upright and slammed my back against the headboard so hard that tears sprang to my eyes.
It was Kane.
My Alpha husband.
He looked at me without expression. Then his gaze dropped, and he said flatly, "Are you trying to seduce me this early?"
I looked down.
The blanket had slipped from my body.
I hurried to cover myself.
Heat rushed to my face. I yanked the blanket up and wrapped myself in it.
Kane sat up. His upper body was covered in burn scars, but the lines of his muscles remained sharp and powerful.
"Are you planning to stay in bed?"
I felt around at the foot of the bed, pulled my clothes beneath the blanket, and dressed under the covers.
Then I noticed something strange.
I clearly remembered falling asleep in my underclothes the night before.
Now even my underwear was gone.
I glanced at Kane suspiciously.
He was buttoning his shirt with absolute calm, as if nothing unusual had happened.
Maybe I had just slept badly and kicked everything off myself.
I cursed my own carelessness.
How could I sleep so deeply beside an unfamiliar Alpha?
Kane returned to his wheelchair.
I went to him and straightened his collar and cuffs. I knew there might be countless eyes watching from outside.
Then my gaze slipped to the bedsheets.
White silk.
Spotless.
No blood.
A werewolf bonding ceremony needed blood and bite marks as proof. Without blood on the sheets, the elders would not acknowledge the marriage.
I had to find a way to put some there.
Kane saw through me before I moved.
He drew a dagger and made a quick cut across his right index finger.
A few drops of blood fell onto the sheet.
"What are you doing?" I caught his wrist. "If we needed blood, you could have cut my finger instead."
I lowered my head to examine the wound.
His hand already had old injuries. The skin was so thin it seemed it might tear with the slightest pressure.
I turned to the old leather case on the bedside table, opened the hidden compartment at the bottom, and took out pale green ointment and clean gauze.
Then I returned to him and bandaged his finger again.
Kane said nothing.
He only watched me.
The morning grew brighter around us.
