Chapter 1
Ella’s POV
The room was dark.
The private theater screen glowed, live-streaming an auction.
It was our two-year anniversary, me and Alpha Gavin.
And right now, I was in a stranger’s arms.
Too dark to see anything. The drug in my system burned like fire.
“Ten million.”
The auctioneer’s voice rolled out right as he drove into me, deep.
I bit his shoulder from the pain. Blood hit my tongue.
He grunted.
“Relax,” he breathed against my ear, hands locked on my hips.
I let go and sucked in air.
He laughed, breath hot on my skin. “Good girl. But when I say relax, I don’t mean your mouth.”
Shame drenched me like a bucket of ice water.
This stranger. A man whose face I couldn’t even see.
It had started hours earlier.
Gavin and I were supposed to have an anniversary dinner. He never showed.
While I sat there alone, an Omega server brought me a glass of water.
Not long after I drank it, heat roared through me, wild and out of control.
Panicking, I called the one person I trusted, Sophia. She shot me an address, saying someone reliable there could take the edge off safely.
I stumbled over.
Which was how I ended up here, pinned to a private theater sofa by a sex worker, his cock slamming into me.
“Ten million! Sold!” the auctioneer shouted. “Congrats to Alpha Gavin Sterling for winning the Luna’s Tear for Ms. Carmichael!”
Gavin.
The name hit like a red-hot blade through my heart.
On-screen, the camera zoomed in.
That face—so familiar that it hurt, stupidly handsome, tilted as he looked down at the stunning redhead beside him, smiling softly.
He lifted his hand and draped it over her shoulder like it was nothing.
But I knew. My Alpha had betrayed me.
Gut-deep. Female instinct, even without a wolf.
My blood iced over.
The man on top of me felt it.
He paused a beat.
Then, he pushed deeper, wringing a choked cry out of me.
He pinched my chin, forcing me to face the screen.
On the screen, Alpha Gavin leaned in and murmured something to the redheaded she-wolf.
“You know him?” he asked, teeth grazing on my earlobe.
Humiliation and rage exploded in my chest, tangling with the ache of the mate bond.
“Does your service include digging into clients’ personal lives?” My voice shook.
“Service?” He rolled the word like it amused him.
He laughed.
His answer came in harder, rougher thrusts.
When it was over, I felt taken apart.
Water ran in the bathroom.
I pulled my clothes on with shaking hands, legs too weak to hold me steady.
Worse, the bond still throbbed, reminding me where Gavin was and who he was with.
I threw all my cash onto the sofa.
Tonight’s fee. He’d earned it.
I braced on the wall and left.
The sun was just coming up when I got home.
I collapsed on the entryway floor.
Everything hurt. Not my body, something dull and deep clawed up from the bottom of my heart.
My phone buzzed. Sophia.
“Ella! Thank the goddess you picked up!” she yelled, voice shaking with pure fear.
“Are you alive? Gavin, that bastard! He drugged you! He could’ve broken the bond like a normal person, but he pulled this shit? He doesn’t deserve to call himself an Alpha!”
I knew what she meant.
I smelled like another male wolf.
Maybe even marked.
If Gavin found out, he could take the moral high ground.
Accuse me of cheating. Dump the breakup on me.
Clean. Neat. His reputation would be spotless.
Gavin picked the restaurant.
The only person who knew I would be there was Gavin.
That glass spiked with a potent aphrodisiac—who else but Gavin?
Gavin. He drugged me, then strutted into an auction to buy jewels for another she-wolf.
Bone-deep despair crawled up my spine.
I gripped the phone until my knuckles went white.
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Something was jammed in my throat.
“Ella? Are you still there? Are you… okay?” Sophia’s voice went careful.
“What happened last night?” she asked, testing the waters, trying to lighten it. “How did you make it through the night?”
I froze.
“What do you mean? Didn’t you set up the room and the guy?”
Silence flickered on the other end for a beat before Sophia’s voice returned, sharper now with confusion.
“What guy?” Sophia sounded just as confused. “I set you up with a Beta female therapist! She knows how to ease that stuff safely! She said she waited at the spot until two a.m. but you never showed up!”
The world went still for a second.
The phone slipped from my hand.
It was not Sophia’s contact.
Then, who the hell was he?
Bang!
The door slammed open and snapped me back.
Gavin stared at me, that handsome face twisted with rage and hurt.
He lunged down the hall, grabbed my throat, and slammed me into the wall.
The back of my head hit. My vision went dark.
He shoved his face to my neck, sniffed, then roared.
He dragged in another breath, nostrils flaring, scenting the other male all over me.
“Ella.” His eyes went bloodshot. “Who were you with last night?”
His gaze locked on the dark purplish bruise on my neck.
His smile twisted, but the pain bled through his voice. “On our anniversary? You let another male fuck you?”
His hand tightened.
I couldn’t breathe.
My vision smeared.
Right there, on the edge of blacking out, I looked at the face I had once loved with everything,
and I laughed.
“What about you?” I forced the words out on my last breath. “On our anniversary, you were busy buying a necklace for another she-wolf?”
Gavin’s face went still.
His grip loosened. A little.
Air flooded back in. I coughed hard.
“Ella.” He stared at me, eyes unreadable. “What is this attitude right now?”
My attitude?
I almost barked a laugh.
But tears fell first.
“My attitude?” I met his eyes. “You want to hear my attitude? When you were bidding for her at that auction, on our anniversary, did my attitude cross your mind?”
He let go.
“That was a misunderstanding.” He looked away. His voice went dry and hollow.
“A misunderstanding?” My voice shook, not from fear but from the pain and absurdity finally breaking loose. “A misunderstanding that kept you by her side until late? That had you holding her like she was yours? That cost ten million for a necklace? Gavin, how long have you been playing me for a fool?”
Gavin’s face changed completely.
He went silent for a few seconds.
When he spoke again, his tone had that cold, screw-it edge. “Carmichael is pregnant.”
Every drop of blood in me froze.
I stopped breathing.
My heart probably did, too.
“What did you say?”
My voice came out sharper than I intended.
“She’s carrying my pup,” he said again. He didn’t even look at me, eyes fixed on an empty corner. “Pregnancy makes her emotional. I just bought her a necklace to cheer her up.”
The world bled of color. Everything went black and white.
I bit my lower lip hard enough to break skin.
The thick taste of blood was the only thing that kept the scream trapped in my throat.
Pregnant.
That she-wolf.
Carrying his pup.
His heir.
“So, it’s true.” My voice cracked. “You knocked her up.”
“Calm down,” Gavin said, back to that cool, businesslike tone. “This doesn’t change anything. You’re still my Luna. She won’t threaten your position. We can call it a small… incident.”
He said it as if the word could shrink what he had done.
“Calm down? A small incident?” I stepped in. “You call betrayal a ‘small incident’?”
He sighed. “You never get it, Ella. You’re boring. You’re dead in bed. What Alpha wants a partner who doesn’t react? I need some spark. Some heat.”
Those words should have shredded me.
But the strangest thing happened—I felt nothing.
It turned out that when your heart had really died, nothing could hurt you anymore.
“Then fine,” I said. “Break the bond. Go be with her for real. Let her give you your heir.”
He looked at me like I had just told him a joke.
“This again? Ella, don’t be dramatic.” His voice even went coaxing. “You love me. You can’t live without me. It’s been two years.”
Love?
He had the nerve to say that word.
My stomach lurched. I almost puked.
He didn’t know.
The Ella who loved him died the moment I was drugged and a stranger was shoved inside me.
I looked at the man I used to love.
My heart was a clean, empty slate.
“Try me.” I held his stare and forced my spine straight. “Break the bond. Name your terms. I just want out.”
Chapter 2
Ella’s POV
“Get the paperwork ready, Gavin. Sever the bond,” I said. “Any terms. I’ll sign.”
I didn’t give him a chance to speak.
I turned, went inside, and shut the door.
He laughed outside. Not amused. The kind of laugh that said he was not wasting time on my little stunt.
“Fine, Ella. Tell me when you’re done throwing a fit.”
I didn’t answer.
Bang. An engine turning over. Tires crunching on gravel.
Then silence.
My knees gave out, and I slid down the door to the floor.
I don’t know how long I stayed there.
When I opened my eyes, the light outside had turned orange.
Sunset. I had been on the floor all day.
Then, the dream caught up.
That man. That dark room. My breath on his skin, his palm hot like a brand, his hand locking on my waist, when he—
I jerked upright.
Fuck.
My face burned. The insides of my thighs still ached. My lower back, too.
Every part of me screamed the same thing: last night had been real. All of it.
My phone buzzed on the floor. Sophia.
I picked it up. My voice sounded like I had swallowed sandpaper. “Yeah.”
“Wait,” Sophia’s tone shifted fast. “What’s with your voice? Were you crying?”
There was a brief pause on the line, as if she were trying to read through the silence on my end.
“No, Soph. Just slept too long.”
I forced my voice to stay steady, even as my throat felt tight.
“Okay.” She clearly didn’t buy it but let it slide. “Listen. Your bloodwork’s back.”
I sat up a little straighter.
“That stuff in your water, Ella? A custom heat trigger. Black market. Not something just anyone can score, you get me? The price tag alone isn’t for regular people.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“I already sent the compound to a friend. Remember Liam? The one with… unconventional connections. He’s tracking purchase records. Once we trace it back—”
Her voice carried a promise of certainty, like she was already pulling invisible threads behind the scenes.
“We’ll know who did it,” I finished.
“Yeah.”
Two seconds of silence.
“Ella,” her voice went soft, careful, “are you sure? You really want to be done with him? For good?”
I let the back of my head rest against the wall and stared at a thin crack on the ceiling.
Am I sure?
I closed my eyes. My mind dragged me back to when I was thirteen.
The year my parents died. All those distant relatives didn’t want another mouth to feed. They tossed me around like trash.
Sterling took me in.
Gavin was three years older.
When other young wolves picked on me, he charged in.
If someone joked about me not having a wolf, his face went cold. “She’s mine. Say one more word and I’ll smash your face in.”
I thought that was love.
Later, when he turned eighteen, he Awakened—became one of the strongest Alphas in the pack.
Everyone waited for him to find his fated mate.
He didn’t. He chose me.
An orphan without a wolf. Unwanted.
The whole pack lost it. But Gavin held his ground. Never wavered.
I always believed what he held onto was love.
Now, I understood.
It wasn’t love. It was a habit. A strong man’s casual kindness to someone weaker.
And me? I mistook that kindness for loyalty. I wrapped everything I owed him up and called it love.
Then, I locked myself in that cage for two years.
“Soph, I’m sure,” I said. “These last two years? Call it me paying him back for taking me in. Debt settled. We’re even. Nobody owes anybody.”
She went quiet for a moment.
Then, a long exhale. “Okay. Then I’m with you. Whatever happens, I’ve got you.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
I hung up.
The weight on my chest, I didn't even know how long it had been there, shifted a little.
Not much. But enough to breathe.
I pushed a hand against the floor to stand.
Then, I froze.
Left hand. Ring finger.
Bare.
The mate ring was gone.
I checked my pockets. The floor. Under the couch cushions.
Nothing. Nowhere.
It had been missing for over twenty-four hours, and I was only noticing it now.
Gavin had slid it onto my finger himself on our mating day.
I had cried like an idiot that day. A total mess.
I told myself I would never take it off.
Now, it was gone.
And my first reaction was not panic.
It was relief.
It started at my fingertips.
Then, crept up my wrist, spread across my chest, and flooded through me.
Like someone had finally snipped the strings tying me down.
I looked at my bare finger.
And smiled.
It was over.
This time it was really over.
…..
Two hours later, the front door opened.
Gavin walked in, dragging in the cold air and that cedar scent he never managed to shake.
Shirt sleeves rolled to his forearms. Face like a thundercloud.
He had just come from pack business. Still in full Alpha mode, that I-call-the-shots aura pouring off him, filling every corner of the room.
His gaze swept over me.
Then stopped.
On my left hand.
“Where’s your ring?”
His voice was quiet.
But the cold in it felt like a blade scraping glass.
I leaned against the kitchen island, a glass of water in my hand.
I lifted my head slowly. “Lost it.”
“Lost it,” he echoed.
He stepped closer. “You’re saying you lost the mate ring I gave you?”
“Yeah.” I took a sip.
“Ella.” Another step.
His Alpha pressure slammed into me like a wall. My lungs started to fight for air. “You fucking did it on purpose.”
I did not move.
“Not on purpose.” I set the glass down.
I didn’t take my eyes off him. “But I’m not looking for it either. You should be getting that agreement ready anyway, right?”
Chapter 3
Ella’s POV
He didn’t answer that. Not a word about the agreement.
He just stood there, eyes pinned to my bare ring finger, jaw muscles twitching.
Something flickered across his face, something restrained, like he was forcing it back down, before he turned and walked into the living room.
I followed.
“Gavin. The agreement,” I said. “How far along is it?”
He whipped around. “Can you, for the love of the goddess, Ella, every time you open your mouth it’s the same thing.”
He yanked his tie loose and dropped into the couch.
“My dad’s drafting his will. You know what that means, right?” He pressed his fingers to his brow, couldn’t even be bothered to look at me. “Alpha succession. Territory distribution. It all hinges on this. If I break the mate bond right now, what do you think the Elders will say? An Alpha who can’t even keep his own mate? Why would they hand him the entire Silver Moon pack?”
Always the politics. Always the power game.
“So you’re saying—”
He finally looked up and cut me off.
“I’m saying sit tight and don’t make trouble for me.”
That look. An Alpha ordering an Omega. Even though I wasn’t even an Omega.
“You’re coming to the estate with me this afternoon. My dad wants the whole bloodline there. You’re going.”
“No.”
His expression snapped.
“What did you say?”
“I said no. Listen, Gavin,” I leaned on the doorframe, arms crossed, “your dad’s will is your business. Who gets the Alpha seat has nothing to do with me. You want a fake Luna to pretty up the picture? Find someone else. Get the agreement done and stop wasting my time.”
He stared at me.
Then, he laughed.
That laugh from on high, like I was making a fool of myself.
“Wow.” He leaned back, an arm thrown over the couch, so casual it made my hands itch to hit him. “You really think you can leave me, huh? Seriously?”
He looked at me intently.
“I know what you’re doing, Ella.” He cocked his head, mouth tilting up. “The ring. You hid it, didn’t you? If you really wanted to go, you wouldn’t pull a stunt like that. You just want my attention.”
My stomach flipped.
“Excuse me?”
Not even a flicker of guilt crossed his face.
“I’m stating facts.” He stood.
His dominance rolled off him with every step, thickening the air between us. My lungs protested, even my breathing lagged a beat.
If I had a wolf, she would have been whimpering by now, belly to the floor.
But I didn’t. So, I stood my ground.
“Where would you even go without me, huh?” He looked down at me. “You don’t have a wolf. You don’t have a pack. Not a single pack out there will take you in…”
He let the words hang between us for a moment.
“The Silver Moon pack gave you two good years—food, clothes, the Luna title, standing across the whole Northern Alliance. Strip all that away? You’ve got nothing.”
Every word scraped like claws on glass.
“But,” he said, lifting my chin with one finger, forcing me to look at him, “if you really can’t take it, fine. We split. I can even keep taking care of you. As long as you…” His eyes dragged slowly over my face. “Keep me happy.”
He actually wanted me to stick around as his mistress after breaking the bond.
Disgusting.
It surged up from my gut to my throat.
I slapped his hand away.
“Listen to yourself.” My voice was so cold it startled even me. “You really think I hid the ring? Fine. I’ll find it and hand it back to you myself. But the day I put that thing in your hand? That’s the day you sign the agreement.”
For the first time since this fight started, silence stretched between us without him immediately talking over me.
“Ella.”
A warning sat heavy in the way he said my name.
“No, you listen. This isn’t a negotiation, Gavin.”
He looked at me. Something shifted in his eyes, gold flickering faintly. Surprise? Annoyance? Just plain disbelief? I couldn’t tell.
Then, his usual arrogance slid back in. The gold faded.
He snorted. “Fine. You want to play? I’ll play. Let’s see how long you last.”
He turned, went to the closet, yanked out a bag, and flung it onto the couch.
“Get changed. We’re leaving at one.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“I said I’m not—”
He cut me off before I could even finish.
“Not up for debate.” He didn’t even look back. “We’ve got guests from other packs at the estate today. Dress appropriately. Don’t embarrass the Silver Moon pack.”
He headed upstairs.
I stood there, staring at the bag on the couch.
What would the old me have done?
Not a word. Open it. Put on whatever was inside.
It would be something low-key. Safe. Make sure I never outshined any Sterling she-wolf.
Two years. Every trip to the estate had been like that.
Hair scraped into something forgettable. Makeup so light it was basically nothing. Stick to the walls. Smile just right, but never stand out.
Like a shadow, existing for one purpose—to prove the Alpha had a mate. That was it.
But, that was then.
I unzipped the bag. A charcoal dress.
Of course. Conservative. Proper. Forgettable.
Standard Sterling family issue.
I held it up for two seconds.
Then, I walked into the bathroom.
I put the dress on. That was the one thing I did his way.
Standing at the mirror, I looked at myself. For the first time, really looked.
My skin was pale, almost see-through.
I looked at my clean lines of collarbone. Last night’s marks tucked neatly under the neckline, only I knew they were there.
On the side of my neck, a faint bruise peeked out, from a stranger’s teeth grazing my skin.
I shut that thought down.
I opened the drawer.
Eyeliner. I drew a sharp line close to my lashes. Not dramatic, but precise. I shaped my brows. Picked a lipstick two shades darker than usual, a deep rose-brown.
I looked at the woman in the mirror.
Yeah.
This wasn’t the quiet, invisible, no-presence Luna anymore.
I headed downstairs.
Gavin was already by the door, twirling his car keys.
He heard my steps and looked up.
The keys went still.
His gaze slid from my face to my collarbones. Down the curve of my waist. Landed on the shape the dress made over my hips.
His nostrils flared. Alpha instinct. He couldn’t help it.
His Adam’s apple bobbed.
His eyes returned back to my face. And stopped.
I saw it, clear as day.
A flicker of awe. That stunned ‘when did you turn into this?’ look.
Then, he turned and opened the door.
From his profile, I saw that ‘I’ve-got-it-all’ satisfaction settled back in.
He was busy convincing himself.
“Her scent’s only mine. Her body’s only been touched by me. Everything’s still under my control.”
Too bad, Gavin.
Nothing was.
