Chapter 1 — A Close Call With Death
NOELLE’S POV
“Help…Lucien. Please…..”
I mindlinked my mate while clutching my pup close to my heart.
The air was heavy with the sounds of the guards grunting, screaming and yelling as they fought off the rogues. Claws slashing against another while my heart thumped.
We were surrounded by rogues. I had been trying to contact my mate through the mind-link for ten minutes, but there was still no response.
After my persistent efforts time and again, I finally got connected via mind-link, yet all I heard was a cold single sentence from Lucien.
“I don’t have time for these little tricks of yours, Noelle. The mindlink is for important things. Find someone else to play with. “
The mindlink was cut off before I could complete my words. I blinked in disbelief and tried again, and again. And…. He was blocking every single one.
The rogues were still attacking, and it was clear my guards were barely holding on.
I could only watch as a rogue ripped out one of my guards’ throat. His blood splashed across my face.
My heart leapt with fear.
Every part of me was trembling.
“Mom….are we going to die?” It came out muffled.
My throat was too clogged to speak.
A groan filled the air when one of them appeared behind that rogue and slit his throat, his eyes widened, blood spluttering from his neck before his body dropped.
I couldn't breathe.
“Leave, Luna. Leave!” One of the guards screamed before launching forward to attack another.
Holding Theo tightly in my arms, I ran desperately toward the pack house.
The sight was pure gore. The amount of blood that had stained Mother earth sent a chill down my spine. The guards had bruises and blood stains all over them.
One rogue managed to pin a guard down, and the other guard turned to save him when a rogue I didn't see coming saw that as an opportunity to attack. An arm stretched to pull my hair behind.
“Mom!”
I tried shoving the strong rogue away and my pup in turn dug his teeth into his arm. The rogue screamed and let go, gnashing his teeth before launching forward.
I was the only daughter of the Alpha of Moonveil Pack, the most feared pack. I started following my Father and his guards to wars when I was twelve. I trained in sword fighting, and defeated many.
Despite not training for years, I wasn't letting anyone hurt my pup.
The rogue came at me again. I fought with everything I had, striking at his throat as his claws sank into my arm. He staggered back, blood spilling as he went down.
How we managed to get back home was a mystery to me. The guards were still back there, and running in my state had taken a lot of will. The will that I had to save my pup.
Theo was put on bed with a cloth draped over his body in the pack infirmary. But he was still unconscious. The doctor said he was in shock, and would wake up .
I sighed, my heart thrashing.
Where was Lucien? Why wasn’t he here to protect our pup?
The pack would normally sound the alarm immediately if a rogue invaded, yet strangely, despite the urgency of the situation, I hadn’t heard a single siren. Someone was clearly keeping it silent, deliberately ensuring I couldn’t get help. Who could it be?
Rage coursed through me and I stormed out in search of him. The old guest quarters was where we lived. I wasn’t allowed in his part of the compound.
To hell with that today.
His smell lingered in the air, thick and unmistakable and I folowed it closely. My hands forming into fists by my sides with each step I took. He was closer. Closer….
I paused. A hall? Music floated in the air, and laughter, and conversations. It sounded like a feast.
The doors were widely open, there were wolves dressed in fancy clothes, and he was standing right there, blond haired, dressed in a green tuxedo with a glass of wine in his hand, laughing at something the male wolf before Lucien said.
A tall slender figure that I knew too well was standing beside him. His Beta, Madea. She was dressed in a full length cream colored v shaped dress decorated by stones. Her orange hair flowing down her shoulders.
My blood boiled.
He was having a feast while we were almost killed???
With blinded rage, I stormed towards him. His eyes subconsciously landed on me, and his expression tightened before he shoved the cup into Madea’s hand, and stormed towards me.
He grabbed my hand. “What are you doing here, covered in blood?” He spoke in a harsh tone. His jaw muscles standing.
“You ignored my mindlink for this? We were attacked….Lucien. I…and your pup were almost killed.” My voice shook while my eyes stung with tears that I refused to let slide.
“This isn’t the best place for this. Go. I will come find you when I’m done.” His eyes darted around. It was this same old thing. This same fear he had of letting wolves see us together.
“We…almost died!” I gritted my teeth.
His grip tightened and pain shot through me. “But you didn’t!” He paused and inhaled air, shutting his eyes briefly. “Go home, Noelle. It’s Madea’s birthday feast. Don’t ruin it with your little game.”
His words hit me like a blow to the stomach and I staggered. I scoffed as my eyelid trembled.
A game…
He didn’t care that we almost died. He didn’t….
“I know you’re throwing a tantrum because I didn’t go with you to pick up our son from school, but I’ll go with you next time. For now, you need to leave.”
I couldn’t help but clench my fists tightly.
Eight years. Eight years of my life dedicated to him. I made sure he came home to a clean house, a warm bed, and the best meals.
Eight freaking years, I stayed hidden.
I gave up everything for him—my life, my dreams, even my family. I was originally a daughter of the great Moonveil Pack's Alpha.
I believed my love was enough to sustain us both.
But now, when my life was hanging by a thread, he accused me of playing around. When I was reaching out to him in desperation, and he told me to stop causing trouble?
I was still burning with anger, but the murmurs around me cut me off.
“It’s the pack’s whore. Is she here to seduce the Alpha?”
“The Alpha is the most handsome unmated Wolf in the pack. He will never fall for someone like her.”
“Words have it that he and his Beta…”
Unmated….
My stomach dropped with my heart releasing a cracking sound as it shattered to little crumbs. His jaw tightened again as he lowered himself to ear length.
How ridiculous! No one here knows I was the Luna. Instead, everyone thinks I am a slut who slept with a random male and got knocked up.
Because he never marked me. Said our love was enough.
I squeezed my eyes shut to stop the sting in it and inhaled a deep breath. When I opened them, his angry grey eyes that I once looked at with love were staring back at me, and instead of warmth, the only feeling thrashing through my bones was disgust.
At him. At myself. At my past decisions.
“I want a rejection!”
Chapter 2 — You, A Nobody
NOELLE’S POV
He dragged me out of the hall without notice, past the doors, shoving me aside the moment we got to an empty corner. I yanked my arm free and what came next was a rumble of laughter that grew louder and louder until it thinned off. He raked his fingers through his hair then let out an exasperated breathe.
“Say that again.”
“I’m rejecting you, Lucien. We…don’t want anything to do with you.” I repeated in a firm voice.
His jaw tightened. “Who….do you….think you are..to reject me?” His words dripped of contempt. “You should be happy a great Alpha like me would as much as LOOK AT YOU.” He shoved a finger in my shoulder with his expression tightening. “You…” Another poke. “..are nothing without me. You hear that, Noelle. Nothing.”
His fake affection facade was long ripped off, now the hatred his eyes held made my heart ache in pain at the realization that this wasn’t the wolf I had fallen in love with.
“And if I turn out to be who you shouldn’t tamper with?” I jammed my jaw together while my hands formed fists.
Eight years ago, I had left my pack and concealed my identity so he wouldn’t feel small. But now….now, he wasn’t worth a strand of my hair.
He dragged in air as he laughed. “You?” Another demeaning laugh. “You can dream all you want. It changes nothing.” He looked around to check if we were still alone before sighing. “I am going to forgive you for today’s incident, and pretend you didn’t say that.”
“I know what I said, and I mean every bit of it, Lucien. I’m rejecting you.”
He raised his hand in the air to tell me to stop talkng and I gritted my teeth.
He inhaled. “You are being too emotional. You know I love you, Noelle. Now go home and prepare my favorite.” After his words, he walked away and paused midway. “Also, wear the lingerie I bought you.” His frame disappeared through the doors.
The audacity that he had.
My heart was ramming against my chest ferociously. It wasn’t because I still loved him. It was beacuse the drive to claw his eyes out ran deep within me. To rip open his head, and put the words in it. That it was over…done.
Previously, his words would have made me melt. Made me run back home in thrill to get everything ready. It would have made me smile so big. Not anymore.
If he wanted other she wolves, then I wil let them be together.
I stormed back to the infirmary, my heart ramming against my chest. Theo's small frame was sitting on the bed, his eyes darted towards me, and the tears I tied to hold back came rushing out as I ran in.
“He’s stable now. We still need to keep him for a little checkup then we will discharge him afterwards.” The pack doctor spoke before the door closed behind him.
I nodded with my throat clogged and settled on his side, taking his small hands in mine. Tiny, and alive.
“I thought I lost you…” It came out as a whisper and more tears followed.
A small smile tilted the tips of his lips before he raised his hand and wiped my tears with his palm. “I can’t possibly leave you all alone with evill Daddy, Mommy.”
A laugh bubbled from my chest. My son had always being too outspoken for his age.
I lowered my gaze as I prepared to tell him the truth. Yes, he was young but it was best that he knew. “I…and your Father are seperating.” I slowly looked up and watched his face frozen for a second.
Did I break him?
Then his smile returned, wider this time. “Finally. I thought you would never see his true colors.”
I blinked. Such big words from someone his age.
He squeezed my hand. “He doesn’t deserve you, Mommy. I’ll find you someone who does. He’ll be rich and…and handsome and…”
I ruffled his brown hair and laughed softly at his jokes. Sometimes, he came off as an hundred years old soul harboring the body of an eight years old.
“How do you feel?”
He bobbled his head, and flashed his perfectly white set of teeth. I pulled him into a hug, taking in his soft flowery smell.
My baby.
The night went well or so I thought before a clicking pair of heels strode into the room, dressed in a short gown with her face made up, and her nails painted. On her fingers sat The Awakened Blue Gem, a ring claimed to be a masterpiece from a world famous carver. It was so expensive yet it was bought even before it could be auctoned.
Hundred thousand dollars.
She didn’t earn enough to afford that.
Lucien…
Her claps resounded through the room driving my eyes back to her face making me gnash my teeth.
“What are you doing here, Madea?”
She shrugged, and threw her hands in the air. “You could say I missed you. Does that count?” Her eyes moved from me to my son.
Theo grabbed my hand, and I squeezed it gently. “Leave. I don’t want you here.” My tone was strict. She was scaring my son and I won’t take that.
“Why? You don’t want to know what he said to me last night.” She slurred, rolling some strands of her hair around her finger.
My jaw muscles ticked. Rage burned in my chest.
“Leave.”
“Everyone says we look good together.” She continued. “He even got me the Lunaville Property deed for my birthday. He is so sweet, isn’t he?”
My other hand tightened with a clump of my dress in it. The Lunaville I told him I wanted. The place I dreamt of raising my kids in. When I brought it up back then, he had told me it was too expensive and suddenly he was handing it over to her.
I scoffed and bitterness spread through me.
“And that’s why you need to leave. Those stupid rogues should have killed you and that pathetic bastard of yours!”
My eyes shot wide open.
“It was…you?”
“Yes. You don’t deserve him, and I won’t let you take what could have been mine and my baby.” She ran a palm over her stomach and smirked. “Your husband fucks so well that he knocked me up…fast.”
She was pregnant?
I pinned my lips together.
My blood boiled over a thousand degrees as I rushed forward, and connected my palm with her cheek causing her to stagger backward.
“You could have killed my son.” My eyes were red shot. My chest was rising and falling fast.
“He shouldn’t even be alive in the first place!” She screamed and my hand shot up again to slap him when the door pushed open and my eyes moved to it to see Lucien standing there. She fell to the floor, faking a cry.
“Luna….I only came here to explain that Alpha Lucien didn’t mean any harm. You didn’t have to hit me.”
Chapter 3 — Goodbye Ex
NOELLE’S POV
My hand slowly lowered as my teeth clenched. I stormed towards him, pointing back at her. “Arrest her, she confessed to having the rogues come after us.”
Lucien didn’t speak for a second, and when he made a move, it was past me, and towards her. I watched as he lowered himself to help her up, and my heart squeezed. Her palm was placed on her cheek.
After she stood, he turned towards me. “Madea was only being nice. Why do you always have to this?”
I scoffed in disbelief, staring at the wolf that was supposed to protect us instead. “Are you not going to ask what she did?”
His eyes returned to me. “You dissapoint me.”
A cracking sound spread through my chest.
“Alpha…” Madea wrapped her fingers around his arm. “Please don’t fight with Luna because of me…” She pretended to stagger, and placed a palm over her forehead. “I will be…fine…” She staggered again and he moved swiftly to catch her. She leaned into him.
I scoffed. Something wet stung my eyes. How blind have I been to see that he loved her and we meant nothing to him? That explained why an incapable female was his Beta. I would do better than her. Had better skills than her. Even an Omega would win her in a war.
I rolled my eyes. “Go away, Lucien.” I walked past him.
A pair of fingers wrapped around my arm, and I snapped my neck around to throw him a deathly glare. “I’m your Alpha, Noelle. You will mind the way you speak to me.
I snatched my arm away. “The more reason why you should stay away from us. It won’t be best if others see us together, you know and that is why we will be leaving.”
My chest burned with disgust. He looked like he was covered in a filthy stench because he was a dirty wolf who can’t keep his dick in his pant.
I heard him sigh before he stretched out his free hand towards my face, and stopped midway, letting his arm drop to his side.
“Alpha….” Her fake pitch consumed the air.
He let go of my hand immediately, and turned in her direction. “You are right. You should leave the infirmary, seeing you might annoy her. You will apologize to her after we return home. Prepare her some soup.”
He dipped his hand in his pocket, and retrieved his phone, I watched as he tapped at the screen. “I know I have been busy, let me make it up to you. I sent you some money.” He returned his phone and strode off.
I scoffed. Really? Did he think that will automatically fix everything?
My eyes went towards them and how gently he helped her back to her room with his palm rubbing her waist. It was true. She was carrying his child.
The last ounce of feeling that had clung to the wall of my heart, telling me not to throw it all away, peeled off like a piece of paper. After I retrieved Theo from the room, we headed back to the quarters.
Packing our clothes wasn’t much of a work because we barely had any. I had been a stay at home wife, and only survived on what Lucien gave me, and he rarely gave me anything.
He would always come up with excuses of what else the money could solve in the pack, and how the wolves were suffering.
“Why do you think she called me a bastard, Mommy?” His words reached deep within and pulled me out of my thoughts.
My hands froze over the bag and I turned my head in his direction. His innocent face was staring right back at me, I inaled before walking towards him and sliding my arms under his arms to throw him in the air once.
“Because she’s jealous you are a cute little pup.”
I could tell that my response didn’t fully convince him from his contentance yet his lips spread in a smile.
Eight years ago, I had gotten ambushed by rogues on my seventeenth birthday, and Lucien had saved me. I was pretty much knocked out by a strong drug but I remembered someone whispering to me that I was safe.
The next thing I knew I was pregnant.
Father had been very disappointed because he had a male in mind. He wanted someone from a strong pack. I didn’t want an alliance.
The infirmary Lucien had put me in back then had given me his details, and I went in search of him.
Rather, I met his grandmother, she had been so thrilled by the news that she mandated we get mated. I also fell in love with him at first sight.
Father refused to meet Lucien or approve our mating and I had to run away from home.
My pup’s laughter broke the daydream. I ruffled his hair before going to pick up my bags. My eyes roamed over the room one last time before we walked out the door. The cold air hitting us in the face and reminding us of our new reality.
“Going somewhere?” One of the maids asked, Helen didn’t treat me like the others did. She was nicer.
“We are leaving.”
Her pupils widened before her lips curled accompanied by her bobbing her head. She wrapped her arms around me for a second before she hugged Theo, too. She was the only one who knew of my relationship with Lucien.
“Let’s meet again.”
I smiled in return and just like that, we got in. His body leaned into mine while I ran my palm over his head as we sat at the back of the rented car. I pressed down my phone’s switch button, and it came on, revealing the notification of the alert.
Fifteen thousand dollars.
Too late, Lucien.
With a couple of taps, I sent it back to him, and blocked him from reaching me before clicking it shut and placing it face down on my lap. The pack faded into oblivion with time, and I inhaled deeply with my heart racing. The future was uncertain but we would make the best of it.
Minutes ticked by slowly, and his little body stired from sleep, his head lifting from my lap.
“Mom.”
I lowered my gaze. “Hmmm.”
“Can we get something to eat? Please. I won’t get anything expensive.” His stomach made a grumbling sound and he placed his palms on them swiftly with his cheeks turning red from embarrasment.
A smile touched my lips as well as I reached to ruffle his hair. “You don’t need to plead, baby. Just tell me what you would love to eat.” I had been too occupied with his shitty father’s behaviour that I completely forgot I was yet to feed him for dinner.
“I want bacon, noodles, eggs, and a bit of…” He paused to look in my direction. I picked up that his bright expression dropped, and his fingers were being curled together on his laps.
“What’s wrong, baby?” My voice was soft.
“Are we broke?”
The question came as a shock crashing down a barier in me that I didn’t even know existed. “Why do you ask that?”
His lips were pressed together for a while before he spoke. “He never gave you money and he didn’t let you work.”
My heart was pressed tight while I moved closer to him, sliding my hand around him. “That’s nothing for you to worry about, okay. I have got us.” I lifted my head and looked towards the driver. “Let’s make a stop at the best resturant around.”
His eyes met mine in his rearview mirror before he reurned them to the nearly empty road ahead, and nodded.
I looked back at my pup, drawing repeated lines as I brushed the hair covering a part of his face to the side. His beautiful big blue pupils danced around with delightment with a bright smile flattening his lips. Warmth spread through me to the tips of my fingers.
I was so blessed to have him. He was my everything.
“Babies should worry about baby things, okay.”
He released a breathe and twisted his lips. “I’m…not a baby, Mommy. I’m…eight.”
A laugh dropped off my lips and I pinched his cheeks. “You’re mine.”
