Chapter 1

Susan’s POV
I was Omega Susan, an orphan the Moon Goddess had paired with Alpha Lucas as his fated mate.
The weirdest part? The Moon Goddess had said that I had a special bloodline. Even though he was an Alpha, he couldn't reject me or cut the bond on his own. But I could reject him, whether he liked it or not.
Three years ago, neither of us had even thought about breaking the bond. Lucas and I had loved each other once…
For as long as I could remember, because I had been an orphaned Omega with no wolf, I had gotten bullied nonstop in my adoptive parents’ house.
They wouldn’t even give me a piece of moldy bread.
I had to go out scavenging for food, and rogue wolves attacked me all the time.
On my eighteenth birthday, three years ago, two rogues baited me with a plate of rabbit meat. They locked me in a shack and ripped off my clothes.
I had been sobbing and begging, fighting to stop them from touching me—
A massive golden wolf had dove out of nowhere and blown the cabin apart.
Alpha Lucas had roared with rage and snapped their necks himself.
“Mate. I caught your scent.”
He had shifted, scooped me up, gently wiped my tears, and fed me a piece of candy.
For the first time, my bitter life had had a little sweetness.
To keep that sweetness, I had gone all in. I had followed him, no questions asked.
What I hadn’t seen coming was that he could never let go of his childhood sweetheart, Lily.
When Lily had heard Lucas and I were planning our mate ceremony, she had tried to kill herself.
At first, Lucas had just shrugged it off. He had said that she was acting, just trying to get his attention.
But right when he was about to mark me in front of everyone, the pack doctor barged into the ceremony, panicking, and told him Lily was about to die.
By the time he had gotten to the hospital, Lily was on the verge of death. She’d slashed her own wrists nine times, and the blood wouldn’t stop.
She had thrown herself into his arms, then suddenly pushed him away and apologized in a weak voice.
“Go. Don’t make Susan wait on you.”
“I’m disgusting. I’ve been fantasizing about what isn’t mine. Since I was seven, I have wanted to marry you. Remember when you wove a ring out of grass and slid it on my finger? I wish we could’ve frozen time right there.”
That had guilted Lucas even more.
Pain flickered in his dark eyes. He pulled her close and promised.
“As long as you keep living, I won’t want anything else.”
From that day on, Alpha Lucas had started pushing me to leave so he could get a second chance to choose Lily as his mate.
But I had been pathetic to the bone. I wouldn’t go.
I had been starved for love—like a drowning person clutching at a straw. I thought I could make Lucas love me like before, so I refused to reject him.
Lucas had run out of patience. All that had ben left for me was his disgust.
No more soft good-morning kisses. No more favorite meals. No more fancy, beautiful dresses. He had even set me “trials.”
“Since you love me so much and won’t let go, then pass these trials and prove it.”
I had agreed without a second thought. I hadn’t thought Lucas would actually hurt me.
But the first trial, he had tossed me into a pit with hundreds of venomous snakes.
They had swarmed over me, coiling tightly around my body, sinking their fangs into my skin and pumping in a venom into me that numbed my nerves.
The pain had me sweating bullets. I had wanted to smash my head against the wall and die.
In the second trial, he had dumped me on a freezing mountain. I had worn a torn shirt and staggered into a blizzard. I could barely move. Frostbite had burned and itched all over me. I had run out of strength and had to crawl out, my hands raw and bleeding…
The third trial, he had forced me to swallow a strip of poisonous thorns. My throat felt ripped open. I had blacked out…
A week ago, Lucas had started the ninth trial. He had thrown me into a rogue pack.
“Since you won’t sever the mate bond, then stay here until you give up and leave!”
As a wolfless Omega, I couldn’t shift. I watched those ugly, greedy wolves open their bloody jaws and tear into me.
Agony ripped through me. I howled and ordered them to stop, speaking as their Luna.
It had only made them attack harder and laugh louder.
“He never marked you. We can’t smell that damn Alpha on you. The real Luna is Lily!”
A lone wolf dragged me out when I was about to die and carried me back to the villa.
Lucas looked at me—covered in blood—and let out a helpless sigh.
“Didn’t think you loved me this much.”
“Fine. Whatever. Have it your way. We’ll hold the mate ceremony in a week.”
His tone was pure charity, like he was doing me a favor.
Before, I would’ve forgotten all the pain and gone happily to pick out a wedding dress.
But I kept thinking about the rogues mauling me, how I screamed my throat raw for help and he had never shown up.
Suddenly, it had all felt pointless. I shook my head.
“No.”
“I, Omega Susan, refuse to become your mate, Alpha Lucas.”

Chapter 2

Susan’s POV
Lucas froze. He clearly had never thought I’d say no.
His dark eyes locked onto me.
“Quit playing hard to get. Didn’t you want to be my Luna so bad? Why are you rejecting me?”
My nose stung. I lifted my eyes to the man I’d loved for years.
I used to ache to be his Luna, to be the only one by his side.
But he didn’t love me anymore. Or maybe he had never loved only me.
After nine trials, I had finally understood: I need to love myself instead of tearing myself apart for a love that wasn’t pure.
“Didn’t you say you only wanted Lily to be your Luna?”
“I’m done with your tests. I don’t want that ridiculous Luna title.”
His gaze dropped to the ugly, scabbed wounds on my arm.
There wasn’t a single patch of clear skin.
He looked away, just a little.
“If we sever the bond, my power will weaken. The pack will be thrown into chaos.”
“You stole the Luna title that should’ve been Lily’s. If you bear this pain and it eases hers, it’s worth it.”
“You love me so much—you never complained through the first eight trials—and now you’re just giving up?”
He rattled off his reasons, even letting blame creep onto his face.
My heart went cold. Turned out the man I had loved was this selfish.
I swallowed the blood rising in my throat and said, steady and slow, “If a lone wolf hadn’t helped me, I’d be a pile of bones by now.”
“Through the mate bond, you could hear me screaming, right? What were you doing then—screwing Lily?”
He clearly hadn't expected me to go there.
His words started to blur.
“No, I… I was exhausted from work. I fell asleep.”
Seeing that I didn’t believe a word, he picked up the herbs airing on the side, stirred them, and said softly, “I added the rock candy you like.”
“Drink.”
My heart lurched.
I remembered the candy he had given me when he had ‘saved’ me, and a sharp pain stabbed through me.
But for her, he had still pushed me toward the rogue wolves I feared most…
“I swear I won’t do that again.”
He saw my eyes go red. He reached for a tissue to wipe my tears, then hesitated, afraid I’d push him away, and set it gently on the blanket.
“Rest for now. I’ll have Gamma prepare a big, fancy dinner for you.”
He had just turned to leave when my phone chimed.
The sender on the screen was Lily.
It was a recording from three days ago.
Hearing Lucas’s heavy panting and her moans, my heart stopped.
She giggled and asked, “I heard the rogues went berserk. Susan might die out there. Are you sure you’re not going to save her?”
He answered in ragged bursts.
“She had it coming. She stole the Luna spot that was supposed to be yours.”
She laughed even happier.
“What if she comes back and finally gives up on you for good?”
He let out a dismissive scoff.
“I just have to give her a piece of candy. She’ll forgive everything.”
“Her gratitude is cheap. She doesn’t want jewels or my island. That way I can give the best gifts to you.”
Right after that came their filthy screams as they climaxed.
A knife sliced through my heart. Clutching my chest, I went to the cabinet and took out the agate used to petition the Moon Goddess.
I used to hide this stone, terrified that Lucas would sweet-talk the goddess into cutting our bond.
I had been that pathetic, begging for his company.
Even if every day had felt like being abandoned.
Even if the whole pack had laughed at me as a clingy, cheap Luna.
But now, I wanted my dignity back.
The girl who would sell her soul for a piece of candy had died under a rogue’s fangs.
I pricked my fingertip with a needle and smeared the blood on the agate.
The summoning worked. I pressed my palms together and said, every word firm, “Dear Moon Goddess, I ask to change my fated mate.”
A clear, sacred voice rang through my mind, “You passed nine trials. Each one let Lucas feel your love. You are a worthy mate. Even I was moved by what you gave.”
“But this time he finally agreed to mark you. Can you really let that go?”
I knitted my brows and shook my head.
“Yes. I choose to let go. I won’t regret it.”
The Moon Goddess sighed, a note of regret in her voice, “But your second-chance mate might be even harder on you.”
“Because there are three of them.”
Three?
My stomach dropped. I asked, “Who are they?”
Before she could go on, the bowl of sweet-smelling herbal tonic by the cabinet made me gag.
I stumbled to the bathroom and started dry heaving.
The discomfort only got worse.
Damn it. Heat again.
Their moans kept replaying in my head.
The thought that the mouth that had licked her pussy had kissed my forehead made me retch even harder.
Dizzy and limping, I made it to the pack doctor’s clinic.
Lily was sitting inside, a hand on her belly as she asked the doctor, “Are you sure I’m pregnant?”
The doctor looked at the report and nodded.
“Yes. It’s a boy.”
My hand clenched around the doorframe.
My nail scraped the wooden door with a harsh screech.
Their eyes snapped to me.
Lily’s gaze was full of taunt.
“Why do you reek? In heat again?”
“If you’re in heat, why not get Lucas to knot you? Why come to the clinic for meds?”
I clenched my fists and shot back, dripping disdain, “I don’t touch dirty things.”
“Unlike some people, screwing around with someone else’s mate.”
Her delicate face twisted as she spat at me, “Quit acting all high and mighty.”
“Don’t think I don’t know how many times you begged Lucas for sex!”
“He was scared I’d get jealous, so he recorded every one of your pleas and played them for me to prove he never touched you.”
She tapped play.
My low, agonized voice spilled out…
“Lucas, please help me. My pussy feels like it’s on fire.”
“Take my virginity. It hurts so bad I could die…”

Chapter 3

Susan’s POV
A wave of humiliation slammed into me.
My mind went blank.
So my pain had been just a joke he told her.
Every time, he had used my being wolfless as an excuse—said I couldn’t handle the pain—to turn me down.
But who knew how many times he had gone at it with Lily without protection.
Seeing how pale I was, she laughed even louder, bold as hell.
“He always comes to me when he’s in heat. Why won’t he come to you, his fated mate?”
I was shaking with rage.
The pack doctor snapped at her to stop, then turned to me, all business.
“That’s enough, Miss Lily. I don’t care if you’re Beta William’s daughter, you don’t make a scene in my clinic.”
“Susan, because you haven’t mated with your partner for years, this heat is probably going to be the worst yet.”
“You have to take the meds on time.”
He handed me a full bag of herbs.
The pity in his eyes felt like the final needle in my heart.
I forced my breathing to steady and took the bag, stiff as a board.
Before I left, I nodded to thank him and said under my breath, “I won’t need this stuff for my heat anymore.”
That wasn’t bluster. I meant it.
Once this hellish heat ended, I would leave the pack. I would follow the Moon Goddess’s pull and find my second-chance mate.
But during heat, I couldn’t do anything. It could throw multiple organs into failure.
As for Lucas, he had never listened to my pleas.
So this time, I wasn't groveling for love and turning myself into their punchline.
What I hadn’t expected was my heat and the infection from that rogue wolf bite to hit at the same time.
The pain had me spiking fevers, blacking out again and again.
It kept getting worse.
Whenever Lucas finished pack business, he would rush home to take care of me.
When he saw me wake, he asked in a panic, “Baby, how are you feeling?”
I couldn’t tell if the panic on his face was real or just an act.
If I cried and threw myself into his arms, would I just be their joke again—a love-starved idiot?
The doctor at my side was giving me a shot, shaking his head grimly.
“Alpha, meds won’t fix this. You have to mate with her—knot her—to ease her condition!”
Lucas hesitated.
Mr. Decisive wavered between me and Lily all over again.
He had promised not to hurt me again, yet here he was, hesitating to touch me—even when my life was on the line—just to stay ‘faithful’ to Lily.
Thank God I had killed the fantasy. Thank God I expected nothing from him now.
He thought I was his for the taking. He had no clue I had standards too.
Breathing shallowly, I forced my eyelids up and gave a tiny shake of my head.
“I refuse.”
“I don’t want him touching me, even if it kills me.”
Lucas stared, stunned, like he couldn’t believe those words came from me.
“What’s wrong with you? You weren’t like this before.”
I forced a bitter smile.
“I’m… thinking of you.”
“Lily and the baby in her belly wouldn’t want you touching me. They’d rather hear you make jokes about me.”
His lie exposed, Lucas’s face shifted.
He started to explain, and I broke into a violent cough.
I spewed a gush of blood, soaking the gold silk sheets.
“Alpha! Her lungs are almost completely failing. If you don’t mate with her now, she’ll suffocate!”
“Even if she’s not your Luna—she’s still your people. You should save her, shouldn’t you?”
The doctor was drenched in sweat.
To save me, he even dropped to one knee in front of Lucas, begging.
“Fine. I guess we have to do this.” Lucas sounded like he was making some grand sacrifice. It made me even sicker.
He shot the doctor a look to get out and started to strip.
His phone rang.
That ringtone was special—set just for Lily.
He hesitated for two seconds, then answered.
“What? You’re surrounded by rogue wolves?”
His voice went high with panic.
He hung up and frowned, torn.
“Baby, Lily ran into feral rogues. I have to go save her!”
“Hang in there. I’ll be right back.”
The doctor tried to stop him, desperate.
Lucas shoved him aside, shifted into a massive golden wolf, and bolted without looking back.
Yeah. She would always matter more than me.
Even if I couldn’t breathe in the next second.
“Miss Susan, don’t pass out. You’ll die!”
“Breathe. Keep breathing!”
His voice shook with panic. He did CPR on instinct, but it wasn’t working.
In the last second before I blacked out, a strong, sweet scent flooded my senses.
“Mate, sorry we’re late.”
Three deep growls rumbled by my ear.
Hands touched me. A jolt like electricity shot through me, tingling head to toe.
The pain ebbed away.
It was replaced by uncontrollable moans, sobs, and breathless, fevered screams…
Hours later, Lucas finally rushed back.
He ran into the doctor on his way out and snapped, “Why weren’t you watching Susan? She was about to die!”
The doctor shook his head calmly.
“No. Her heat is already over.”
Lucas frowned, confused, and kept barking,
“Didn’t you say only sex could fix it? I didn’t come back to knot her. How could she—”
He stopped, as if it had finally hit him. Shock turned into rage in a heartbeat.
