Chapter 1 — Utterly Defeated
"Michael, I know no one will lend us money.
"Don't demean yourself by pleading for money. Just live your life.
"I've been a burden on you for so long, Michael. I don't want to hold you back anymore. In my next life, I'll still be your sister ... "
"Shephard, why don't you know your place as a live-in son-in-law? She's your sister. Her life and our family's aren't linked. Weren't you born into a family of alternative medicine practitioners? Surgery is unnecessary. You go treat her yourself!"
As Michael Shephard hurried to the hospital, these words echoed in his mind.
The first remark came from his sister lying in a hospital bed, desperate for money for her surgery.
The second was from Lydia Winston, his mother-in-law.
Michael indeed hailed from a lineage of holistic healers.
But when he was six, disaster struck his family overnight.
In a single night, his entire family perished.
Only his mother managed to escape with him and his sister.
His mother struggled fiercely to raise the two of them.
But when Michael turned fifteen, his overburdened mother also passed away, leaving only him and his sister to rely on each other.
Besides his good sister, his mother also bequeathed him a tapered pendant of unidentified material.
This pendant was purportedly a family heirloom.
To survive, Michael took on any paying job, including delivering pamphlets and performing strenuous labor at construction sites.
When work was scarce, he even resorted to begging.
Five years ago, just to survive, he became a live-in son-in-law at the Lewises'.
Despite enduring humiliations at the hands of the Lewises, he endured it without complaint.
Because, in any case, the two siblings found stability.
But recently, his sister, Sally Shephard, was diagnosed with a tumour.
In a short time, it became malignant, and she urgently needed 45 thousand for surgery!
During Sally's treatment, he exhausted all his savings and accumulated debts.
Now, he needed 45 thousand; where was he supposed to find it?
His only option was to seek help from the Lewises.
He figured that the Lewises, driven by a sense of kinship, would help save Sally.
But he received nothing and was insulted by Lydia instead.
When he was at his lowest, Michael received another call from his sister at the hospital.
In the call, Sally's thoughts of suicide left him feeling even more adrift.
Sally, you mustn't do anything rash! Michael screamed inwardly.
In this world, Sally was his sole remaining family.
He had once vowed to give Sally a good life!
But now ...
He never imagined that he couldn't even muster the funds for Sally's treatment, let alone save her life!
He was furious...
Furious at his lack of money!
Being just a live-in son-in-law!
Being born into a family of alternative medicine practitioners yet not understanding any medicine, which delayed Sally's treatment!
But he also knew that the greatest luxury for the two of them was simply surviving in this world!
But now, was even this simplest of hopes denied by fate?
Michael had already resolved that he would save Sally even if it meant selling a kidney!
He swore to keep Sally alive!
Upon arriving at the emergency ward where his sister lay, a figure covered in a white sheet was being wheeled out.
Buzz!
Michael felt a buzzing in his head, a dizziness that almost caused him to collapse.
This can't be real. It can't be ...
This isn't Sally. It can't be Sally ...
Michael repeated this to himself.
But the words of the doctor pushing the surgical cart shattered all of Michael's hopes.
"Your sister has passed away. But her death had nothing to do with the hospital. She removed her oxygen tube herself!"
The doctor's cold voice pierced Michael's heart like a sharp blade.
Michael felt like his entire world had crumbled!
Chapter 2 — The Legacy of Taoist Medicine
Michael felt his strength drain away completely.
He couldn't even stand anymore; he collapsed to his knees beside the trolley.
With trembling hands, he lifted the white cover ...
Seeing his fragile sister, tears streamed down his face uncontrollably.
"Sally, why did you do this? Why ...
"Why didn't you perform the surgery on her? Why ...
"Did it have to come to this? Is money really more important?"
The middle-aged doctor, visibly irritated, shot back, "This hospital isn't a charity. You already owe us thousands. Do you expect us to keep losing money? Pay your debt, or we'll have to keep her in the morgue, which will accrue more fees!"
Michael looked up at the doctor in the white coat, whose expression was devoid of compassion.
The supposed benevolent figure was heartless.
Nevertheless, Michael shook his head while sighing.
He knew the hospital had already been exceptionally patient with his debt.
Reluctantly, Michael unclasped the pendant from around his neck and handed it to the doctor.
"This is a family heirloom. See how much it's worth. It's all I have left."
With no family left, he felt like there was no reason to go on. Keeping the pendant served no purpose.
Giving it to the hospital was the least he could do to settle his debts.
As he handed over the pendant, memories of his deceased mother flooded his mind.
Before she passed, she had entrusted him with caring for Sally and safeguarding the family heirloom.
Now, he had failed on both counts.
"Mom, I'm sorry. I let you down ... "
Grasping the pendant tightly, he felt utterly defeated.
In his sorrow, Michael didn't notice the sharp edge of the tapered pendant piercing his skin.
Blood flowed freely ...
But not a drop fell to the ground; it all soaked into the pendant!
Suddenly, Michael heard a loud buzzing in his head.
His vision blurred, and he collapsed onto Sally's trolley.
An ancient voice echoed in his mind.
"I am Timothy Shephard. I have concealed the secrets of Taoist medicine within this stone. In times of need, the heir of the Shephards will unlock its wisdom. Embrace my legacy and protect our lineage!"
A series of images flashed before his eyes.
Though numerous, they imprinted on his mind in seconds, as if they were his own memories.
When Michael opened his eyes again, he felt transformed.
He sensed a potent energy three inches below his navel ...
But he had no time to dwell on this newfound power.
He detected a faint pulse still within Sally!
This meant Sally was alive!
Michael swiftly applied pressure to several points on Sally's body, preserving what remained of her life force.
As he prepared to save Sally, his phone rang.
An unfamiliar voice rang out.
"Michael? The money has been transferred. Use it to save your sister, but there's a condition. You must agree to divorce Sophia."
Michael paused, then demanded sternly, "Who are you?"
The voice chuckled. "I'm with Sophia at a hotel. She's in the shower. Any guesses who I am?
"Divorce her or lose your sister—your choice. I'm going to enjoy my time with Sophia. Haha!
"By the way, thanks for keeping her pure during your five years of marriage; it will make my experience all the more perfect."
The call ended abruptly.
Michael stood there, stunned.
Chapter 3 — I'm Going to Save Her
Clearly, he had been cheated on!
Michael felt a sharp pain in his heart, as if a knife had twisted inside him!
No wonder Lydia always treated him with disdain, and Sophia Lewis had always been distant. They had orchestrated everything.
He had been oblivious until now, and they had been waiting for an opportunity.
Now that opportunity had arrived, and they were asking that he propose getting a divorce just to save face!
And they had even sent that man to deliver the message!
Michael's chest burned with anger, and he silently vowed, The Lewises won't get away with this. I won't let this slide. I'll make sure they regret it!
Michael set aside his pendant and pulled out a bank card, handing it over to the doctor. "The money has been transferred to this card. Please proceed with the payment."
The middle-aged doctor took the card, exhaling deeply.
Just moments ago, Michael had collapsed abruptly on the surgery trolley, startling him. He had feared Michael was about to cause a scene.
As he turned to leave, Michael spoke again, "Prepare a vacant room for me and bring me a set of cupping jars!"
The middle-aged doctor was taken aback. "What do you need them for?"
Michael looked at Sally. "I'm going to save her!"
The doctor was speechless. "Save her?! She's already gone!"
"No, she's not dead!" Michael shouted.
The doctor was startled. "Stop yelling! This is a hospital!"
Michael insisted, "What's the problem? Is the money on the card not enough to arrange a room? Not enough to purchase cupping jars?"
"I warn you! Don't cause trouble!" the doctor threatened sternly.
The doctor realised he must have offended Michael earlier with his attitude, and now Michael was retaliating, trying to stir up trouble.
"I'm not causing trouble! I'm trying to save a life!" Michael retorted angrily.
"Why are you yelling?!" the doctor barked.
"What's going on?"
At that moment, an elderly man with white hair approached.
The doctor recognised the elderly man as Cedric Mckinney, an alternative medicine practitioner visiting the hospital for an academic exchange.
He hurried over to Cedric and recounted the recent events.
Cedric observed Sally lying there and shook his head. "Young man, the dead cannot be brought back. Please accept my condolences."
Michael glared at Cedric. "I'm telling you, she's not dead!"
The doctor grew alarmed. "Dr. Mckinney, I think he's just here to cause trouble. Should I call security?"
Cedric hesitated briefly, then waved his hand. "There's no need for security."
Surprised, the doctor said, "But Dr. Mckinney ... "
Cedric addressed Michael, "We don't have cupping jars here at the hospital, but I have some at my clinic nearby. If you're willing, come with me, and I'll get them for you."
Cedric had a compassionate heart and had witnessed many distraught family members experiencing emotional turmoil after losing loved ones.
Right now, it was crucial to stabilize Michael's emotions and prevent further agitation.
Michael looked gratefully at Cedric. "Thank you so much!"
The doctor snorted disdainfully. "You're just lucky you ran into Dr. Mckinney ... "
……
Carrying Sally, Michael followed Cedric to a clinic named Perfect Touch Clinic just outside the hospital.
Inside the clinic, banners adorned the walls.
Cedric fetched a set of cupping jars and led Michael to an inner chamber.
Cedric was about to offer consoling words about the impossibility of bringing back the dead ...
But his eyes widened in astonishment!
He watched as Michael carefully pressed three specific points on Sally's body!
And these points were none other than the forehead, chest, and lower abdomen!
Upper energy field!
Middle energy field!
Lower energy field!
But that wasn't all—Michael used two fingers to stroke Sally's body ...
To the average person, Michael's actions might seem incomprehensible.
But Cedric, seasoned in alternative medicine, understood perfectly well what Michael was doing!
