Chapter 1

Kelsey's POV
The sharp tang of antiseptic burned my nose. The human doctor handed me the test results, coffee-stained fingers leaving faint smudges on the paper.
I stared at the grainy image. A shadow the size of a grape stared back. My ears were ringing.
"Five weeks along," the doctor's voice sounded muffled, like he was underwater. "Congratulations. All your levels look perfect."
My blood turned to ice. My fingers dug into the stone bench until my knuckles whitened—this couldn't be happening.
As an unmated werewolf, that single encounter with Alpha Marcus during last month's full moon shouldn't have done this.
Moon madness had made his wolf restless, driving him to seek me out.
He'd only left temporary marks on my neck, his fangs never breaking skin.
"You... sure about this?" My voice shook. The scent of pine seeped from me uncontrollably, mixing with the sweet lychee aroma of early pregnancy.
"Absolutely." The doctor smiled.
I trudged through Shadowpine Forest clutching the report. Rotting leaves squelched under my combat boots.
Sentries from the Bladeclaw Pack watched me pass—they all knew I was Alpha Marcus' pity-mate. His grandmother, the former Luna, had forced this arrangement.
This had to be a nightmare. Pregnant? Really?
I texted Marcus before I lost my nerve, "Dinner tonight?"
The wait felt endless. He hated being bothered during work hours. Last time I'd texted, he'd left me on read for three days.
My phone buzzed. His reply was curt, "Be there. Need to talk."
I had the Pack omega prepare his favorite dishes.
Placed the ultrasound face-down on the table, then flipped it over. I hid it under a napkin.
At dusk, black car lights cut through the fog.
Marcus unfolded himself from the vehicle, suit jacket slung over one arm. Every movement screamed power.
"Alpha Marcus." I reached for his coat. He shoved a document into my hands instead. My breath hitched when I saw the header—DIVORCE SETTLEMENT.
"Make changes if you want." His tone was business-cold.
The legal jargon blurred. My bonding scar throbbed.
I pressed a hand to my stomach. "What if... what if we had a pup? Would you still—"
His gaze snapped to my abdomen. "Impossible. I never fully marked you."
I jerked my hand away. This pup wasn't wanted.
Marcus gripped my wrist. His nostrils flared. "Are you actually—"
"Hypothetical." My voice went flat.
He exhaled sharply. "Don't joke about this. You know how rare true mate bonds are. How few pups get born these days." His golden eyes hardened. "I won't destroy a life... but don't force my hand."
The message was clear—even for the Pack's survival, he'd reject this child.
Our half-formed bond meant nothing.
He turned toward the door. "Eat without me. I'm busy."
I watched his SUV disappear into the pines. The feast I'd spent hours arranging went straight into the trash.
My palm rested on my still-flat stomach. "Daddy doesn't want you," I thought, "but Mommy's got you."
Being a rogue meant no Pack, no roots.
My human foster parents dumped me at Catherine's boarding school when their "real" kid came along.
Becoming Marcus' mate wasn't about power—just craving somewhere to belong.
Turns out that was a fairytale too.
No Alpha would choose a rogue as his Luna.
I scrawled my name on the divorce papers without reading them.
Dawn brought stabbing pain behind my eyes—mind-link activating.
Marcus' mother Sydney's voice clawed at my skull, "Prep the east tower. Important guest arriving."
The connection severed.
I hurled a bronze candlestick at the wall. Melted wax blistered my palm as I laughed at the sparks.
That afternoon, black horses pulled a obsidian carriage into the courtyard.
A redhead swept into the great hall, wrinkling her nose at our banners.
"Redo the tapestries," she told our omega. "My servants will instruct you."
I blocked her path. "Who the hell are you?"
"Angela." Her smile showed too many teeth. "Future Luna of Bladeclaw."
My chest tightened. So this was why Marcus wanted out.
I used to take care of every detail of this villa, and now this empty shell was finally welcoming its real owner.
"Three years you've kept my seat warm." She flicked dust off my shoulder. "Time to return what you stole."
"Stole?" I stepped closer. "When rogues poisoned Alpha Marcus during the Blood Moon, where were you? When his wolf was dying and needed its true mate's bond?" My laugh came out jagged. "Oh right—you rejected him. Now you want back in?"

Chapter 2

Kelsey's POV
Back then I was just a nurse at the werewolf clinic.
The former Luna of Bladeclaw had begged me to become Marcus' mate when he lay dying from wolfsbane.
Nobody expected much from some nobody rogue—least of all me. Then he woke up breathing fire three days later.
That's when the Pack started looking at me sideways.
"Don't twist the truth," Angela's cheeks flushed pink. "I was held captive in the Royal Pack." Her claws gleamed silver-tipped. "You rogues wouldn't understand court politics. Just sign the damn papers."
"Already did."
"Smart girl." She tossed a check at my feet. "Take this and disappear."
The paper fluttered to the floor. I stepped over it.
Angela's fur bristled along her neckline.
Her Lycan aura crashed over me like tidal wave—or tried to.
My wolf yawned in my head, flicking its tail. The pressure vanished.
Her eyes widened as her fur retreated. "How did you—"
I shoved past her. So this was the power of a Lycan?
But I had no interest in probing further. I'd already agreed to divorce Marcus. Staying here was pointless.
My duffel bag sat half-empty on the bed.
Three years here and I couldn't even fill a suitcase. It was like a dream.
Angela strolled into the master bedroom waving our divorce decree. "Done packing?"
My wolf growled low in my spine.
She sniffed the air suddenly. "Puppy smell. You're breeding?"
"If I was," my voice dropped to a growl, "you think I'd sign that paper?"
Angela leaned against the gilded bedpost, her long fingers tracing the pillow where Marcus had slept last night. The mix of pheromones and mockery hit me. "How dare a rogue bear the future heir of Bladeclaw?"
She pointed a scarlet nail at my stomach. "Your mongrel isn't even fit to be a chew toy for Marcus' wolf."
My wolf snarled deep in my spine, claws scraping at my mental barriers.
I rushed into the closet, clutching the pregnancy test.
The mirror reflected Angela's twisted smile as she advanced in a rose-scented storm, the oppressive force making the chandelier clink.
"Let me see what you've stolen from Marcus," she hissed, her venomous fingertips gripping my wrist, pupils contracting into feline slits.
"Privacy!" I arched my back, a warning growl escaping as my canines pierced my lower lip.
"Give it to me," Angela's outstretched fingers gleamed metallically.
"Enough!" My wolf's roar shook the chandelier. My right hand shifted into a clawed paw against my will.
In Angela's terrified gaze, I seized her wrist and executed a precise over-the-shoulder throw.
"Ah—!"
Angela cowered among the debris, trembling. The wolf that had been arrogant moments ago now whimpered in her spine.
Marcus' pine scent choked the room.
His transformed eyes locked onto my half-shifted hand. "Kelsey, explain."
"She started—"
"Alpha Marcus!" Angela whimpered, cradling her unmarked arm. "I thought she stole your signet ring…"
I watched him cradle her like precious china.
Marcus knelt and lifted Angela into the velvet armchair with a gentle motion that contrasted sharply with his icy command to the omega, "Fetch the Pack doctor. Give Angela a full examination, especially her hand nerves."
My wolf screeched in my mind, "She's faking!"
Of course I knew, but Marcus clearly didn't believe me.
I bit my lip until I tasted blood.
His thumb brushed her hair—same way he'd touched me that first winter. My wolf howled as pregnancy cramps twisted my gut. "Apologize."
"To her? Never."
"Apologize for harming the future Luna. Now." His fingers brushed Angela's nape as he spoke.
Agony erupted in my temples—the Alpha's command brand was activating.
I staggered, clutching the bedpost, watching Marcus use the same gentle hand that once caressed me to smooth Angela's hair. My wolf's howl resonated with the pup's energy fluctuations in my womb, creating a stabbing pain.
"What if I don't?" I wiped the blood from my nose.
"Think of Spike," Marcus said quietly.
The name hit harder than any Alpha command.
Spike still smelled like antiseptic and coma-induced sweat in that hospital bed. All because he took a rogue's claws for me three years ago.
My wolf's tail limply swept the mental sea. "The pup needs a safe birthplace..."
I stared at Angela's ankle, deliberately exposed beneath her skirt—unblemished, no bruise in sight.
As my nails dug into my palm, I whispered, "I'm… sorry."
Angela's fake sniffle halted. She hadn't expected me to submit, her prepared script stuck in her throat, twisting her face into a comical mask.
"Done?" I wiped blood on my jeans. "Leaving now."
I didn't want to stay a second longer.
Marcus nodded to the omega. "Clean her up."
"Fetch me ice first," Angela purred, hiking her skirt to show flawless ankles. "My ankle seems swollen."
When I threw the ice pack down, her lips brushed my ear. "Know why Marcus came home late last night?"
She pulled her collar down—fresh bite marks glowed gold above her breasts. "Turns out he doesn't hold back with real mates."

Chapter 3

Kelsey's POV
Angela's words painted images I didn't want to see.
When I stayed silent, she yanked her collar lower.
Fresh bite marks glistened with healing serum—marks Marcus shouldn't have given to anyone but his true mate.
My fangs pierced my cheek, blood drowning the bile rising in my throat.
I turned to zip up my duffel. Three years of life packed into thirty pounds.
Angela's rose-scented pheromones choked the walk-in closet as she drummed polished nails on gilded doors.
Beta Darcy scurried to take her fur coat, neck bared in submission to the higher-ranked wolf.
"Darcy," Angela sang, "that luggage looks expensive. Get her something... suitable."
The Beta threw a moldy canvas sack at my feet. "Use this."
Marcus' pine scent cut through the mildew stench from the adjacent bathroom.
His shower water pounded like gunshots.
The fading bond from our partial mating three months ago made morning sickness churn harder.
"Search the bag." Angela's fangs peeked beneath crimson lips.
I turned away, swallowing the ultrasound report. The ink tasted like ash.
Unmarked mates shouldn't conceive. With Marcus showering just beyond the bathroom door, discovery would be disastrous.
"What's the holdup?" Beta Darcy grabbed my shoulder with bronze claws, earth-stink breath in my face.
"Want to dig through my underwear?" I snapped.
"Disgusting," Angela fake-gagged.
Darcy shoved me toward the door. "Get moving!"
The walk to the mansion's entrance felt endless.
Darcy upended my sack, clothes scattering across marble floors.
Too bad she wouldn't find what really mattered—that ultrasound was dissolving in my stomach acid now.
My phone buzzed as I crouched to gather belongings.
Catherine's voice broke through, "Kels? You okay?"
Tears hit the floor before I could stop them.
Three years of humiliation hadn't broken me, but one familiar voice did.
"Catherine." My voice wavered.
"Why are you crying?"
"I... I have nowhere to go."
"Alpha Marcus rejected you?" Catherine sighed.
"Listen," Catherine rushed, "your brothers found me! Three blood brothers in Washington, cousins too. They're all looking for you."
"My family?"
I'd known I was an orphan but never sought my family.
Though I longed to belong to a Pack, since my parents abandoned me, I saw no need to search for them.
"Come back quickly. Your brother will take you to your Pack. I..."
The phone died.
I knelt frozen. Family? Real family?
"Making scenes again?"
Marcus' voice cut through my daze.
He stood dripping in a silk robe, gaze locked on my scattered thrift-store jeans. "In all your years here, I never restricted your access to Pack resources. Are you leaving with thrift-store clothes just to make my grandmother think I mistreated you?"
I clutched my dead phone, still processing Catherine's news. Once, I'd dreamed of being found by family, ending my loneliness.
Distracted, I ignored Marcus.
Angela limped out dramatically. "She insisted on that filthy sack! We tried to stop her..."
Darcy nodded eagerly. "Threw her clothes everywhere for attention."
The air grew tense. I stood frozen, listening to their slander.
Watching Marcus, I wondered what he'd say.
"Nothing to say?" His eyes glowed Alpha gold.
Predictable.
"Why bother?" I laughed bitterly. "They've scripted your truth already."
His jaw tightened. "What more do you want? You've had every luxury—"
"To be more than your glorified chef!" My claws unsheathed. "A real Luna leads. Protects. Not hides like some shameful secret!" I laughed bitterly. "You said I could use Pack resources. Did you mean for groceries and cooking?"
"Finished?"
"Not yet."
"Keep saying."
"Pay me and I'll keep talking."
Marcus's lips thinned. "So money-hungry, Kelsey. Greed will lead to your downfall. You're the most shameless woman I've met. Leave. I never want to see you again."
He walked away, his back as cold as ever.
I felt defeated, baffled by this biased man's judgment.
Angela raised a brow. "Leave Bladeclaw—never return."
Suddenly, a helicopter thundered overhead and landed boldly on the lawn.
Several tall, black-clad bodyguards strode toward me, their aura intimidating.
Marcus, hearing the helicopter, watched from the doorway as the guards approached me respectfully.
"Kelsey, we're here to take you away."
