Chapter 1 — Danya And Her Family
Author's PoV
"Danya honey! Wake up. It's already 8.30AM and you have your farewell function at 10AM. And you know your college is 1hour away from home". Danya's (in short D) mom Hema called. D is not a morning girl. She can be awake all night and be brisk and happy in the morning rather than waking up early. Yes, 8.30 is early for her!
Everyday her dad Gunasekaran chases after her college bus to drop her in. And he is not happy about it. She has 2 younger sisters Daksha and Shanvi. Daksha is 2years younger than D and Shanvi is 5yrs younger than D.
D has just finished college. Yes, she is an IT graduate. Despite that, the 3 sisters always run around the home fighting. D's dad is an industrialist. So yeah! Their family is rich. Today is D's farewell day and she is an amazing dancer. She is performing. Now she is running to catch her college bus because her dad is not ready to drop her for one last time.
"Hey D, come fast we just have to get you ready!" said Indra. D, Indra, Uma and Yazhini are besties in college. They all maintain 75% in academics and active participants in other activities also. Though they have never won anything. Her other friends Raghav, Manoj, Rushy and Rahul were already ready to deliver their parts.
"Hey D! Our senior Hari is here to see you!" said Rahul.
"Oh no! Why now?" said D. Hari is their senior in the computer science department. He proposed to Danya in her 3rd year and continued being her good friend. She kinda likes him but she can never love anyone. Since he is a very good man, she doesn't want to hurt him and thus doesn't want to meet him!
D is no miss goody shoes. She is a mischievous girl. There are many guys in college who seek her attention, even professors. She knew at the glimpse of a boy that he would propose to her one day. But all she does is enjoy the attention she gets and makes them buy every snack at the college canteen to all her friends!
Some don't like her and some LOVE her for what she is!
D's PoV
"Hi Hari! how are you?" I asked him when he approached me with wide smiles.
"I'm super good Anya. You look amazing." Huh, here he goes again! Praising my beauty kinda boosts me up. But nah! That doesn't get him what he wants.
"Listen Hari, I know you love me. But didn't I tell you I can't love you? You are going to be the correspondent of a school next year and here you are coming behind me when I have clearly told you it's simply a waste of time".
"Anya, I'm well settled. I have everything to make you happy, you like me. I can come talk to your parents. Then what is the problem?"
"Hari, my dad! He is the problem. He is the most loving dad. He gave us everything. In turn, he asks us to be disciplined and obedient. He is the last son of our family. My sister is married. My brothers are no problem simply because they are boys. Now we are 3 sisters in the same family Hari. My dad thinks that marrying us off to a man of his choice will prove his upbringing to be the best. He thinks that is his life's reward . When he gave us everything in life and we are in a position to grant his life's reward, how can I deny him that? Besides, you are right. I like you. You are handsome and everything. But I don't love you Hari. I am so sorry."
I saw Hari trailing off with a last handshake. Poor him. He is a good man. I really wish he finds his love! But whenever someone trails behind me or proposes to me, I always think of him. That senior boy in my school . He was in 12th standard when I was in 8th grade. We never spoke with each other, just shared looks when we crossed. He was the one that gave me butterflies in my tummy. I have always longed to see him. He comes to school on an Apache bike. He will wait until my auto leaves the campus. I used to dance in every annual day function and he was in drama. We did rehearsals in the same hall.
"What's up D, duet with Hari?" asked Manoj. My friends always tease me for the attention I get from boys and male professors.
"Ahah nope! Not happening guys. Now get your asses out, I need to finish my makeup!" I chased everyone away. With that everyone except Indra and Uma went out.
"I know what you were thinking." said Uma with a smirk."I want to punch you in your face, Uma!" I said playfully.
All my friends know about my first crush ..! His name is Rishi. He is the only boy that made butterflies in my tummy. Maybe, I was so young at that time or now I know my responsibilities. No other boy has managed to do what he did to me. He is always special.
(In the evening...)
Huh! It's a long tiring day. The farewell at college ended at 2pm and we all went to a movie together. Then we had our dinner and I just came back. I am lucky dad is not yet home. Don't worry, it's just 7.30pm. That's my dad for you. He had never in my life pushed me to study or learn household work. But he is strict as hell. I cannot go out to my friends place, but they can come home. I cannot stay out after 6pm. You won't believe what I'm going to say now, I don't have a mobile phone for myself. I use my mom's phone when I'm home. When they want to contact me, they will call Indra's number.
I just got to my room. Well! technically it's a shared room. I share it with Daksha. She is one annoying loving sister. I can sense that something is not right with the looks she gives me.
"what's up sissy?" I asked her.
"I have news for you. It's both good and bad!"
"Spill it. What have you done? Did you tell mom that I took money from her purse?" I glared at her.
"Oops no! The matter is about you but it has nothing to do with me!" she put her hands in the air. Huh! Drama queen.
"Pch! Tell me already, Dakshu. I'm tired." I told her plopping myself on the bed.
"Dad has finally selected a groom for you!" she said.
"Whaat?" I shrieked in horror. I know dad is not going to let me go to work..! I never tried to attend a campus interview! But marrying even before I get my degree? Come on! Colleges give degrees after a year right!?
"Have they finalized?" I have my heart thumping out loud enough for my sister to hear.
"They have shortlisted 2 grooms. I looked at their pictures. They both look so good. I have no objection in taking one of them for'mama' (a way to call a sister's husband in Tamil)" she said.
"Huh! Are they ever going to tell me?"
"Mom will talk to you at dinner. You better go and talk to her before dad comes. If not, you can't ask anything, just can hear what dad has to say!" she said.
She is right! Freshening up can wait. I ran downstairs to find my mom in the kitchen.
"Mee, (that's how I call my mom) Do you have something to tell me?" I asked her. She looked at me lovingly.
"Yes, Danya honey! Dad and I have selected 2 grooms who match your beauty and our family criteria. They both are from business backgrounds. Both from Coimbatore. You know how much dad is inclined to shift our businesses to Coimbatore. So, packing you up there is the first step." she said with a bright smile.
Yes, our native is Coimbatore and now we are in Trichy because of dad's business. All our relatives are there. My dad loves being in the midst of crowds. They are not going to show me the photographs until they pick one! Typical old- time practice. You can't waver the girl's mind by showing someone who is not going to be her's. Duh!
"okay! Is it not too early, mee? Like, I just finished my last day of college and you are trying to get me out of this house already?" I'm anxious!
"You know, you are getting wedding proposals from when you entered your 2nd year in college. I fought with dad to let you finish your degree sweetie. I can't hold up anymore. Besides, this is the right time to get these things done." she said, caressing my cheek.
"I know. But I am scared mee, I think I am not ready yet". I tried telling her that I am not ready for commitments yet, though I know that will never change my parents mind. I ate my dinner and went to my room before dad got home. I tried to sleep which felt like mission impossible.
Chapter 2 — Wedding!?
D's PoV
Yeah! I'm getting ready for a wedding. Except it’s not my wedding. It's even worse. I'm getting ready to showcase myself to the 'groom-to-be' who is coming to a wedding which is supposedly a distant (far distant) relative's. So, the parents on both sides thought of this amazing idea to go informal. We are going to meet at a wedding function and decide if we like each other. Huh! Who am I bluffing..? The groom wants to see me in-person and he has no time to come to Trichy. So, we are going to this very distant relative's wedding in Coimbatore to show myself!
Eww! Sounds bad? Anyways! I have no say! Though I have nobody on my mind and ready to accept anyone whom my parents choose for me, I still feel a bit bad for myself. At least they could ask how I feel about all this. I know my parents will make no mistake in choosing my life partner. We are at my paternal Grandparents home. My mom is going all crazy. With what she has taken out for me to wear, the groom of this wedding will really get confused for the bride.
"Mee, this wedding is not for me. You are going to confuse everyone in the wedding hall." I laughed at her.
"Stop that and come let me drape this saree for you." she hushed me.
"Mee I'm not going to wear this saree or these jewels. For god's sake, please let me choose my outfit".
"Put this saree on, Danya Hon. You will look gorgeous in it. Maybe we can reduce the jewels." WOW! That's the best I can get from her. So, I thought it’s better to settle with this deal.
"Ok! Done! Now you go and get ready. I will call you when I need your help." With that she left the room. I looked at the dark purple silk saree with silver jari(border) on it. It's indeed beautiful. I started draping it and finished it in about 1hour. Hehe! I'm no good at saree draping. I took minimal jewels to go with the saree and left my long hair open with a little clip in the middle that held the side hair. Should I say I look beautiful?! Is that not self-appreciating??? But I do look amazing. It gives me a little confidence boost!
We are now at the valet-parking of the wedding hall. Wow! The hall looks humongous! Deep breaths D! You can do this! You can do this! It's 7.30am and the wedding time is 7.30 to 8.00 am. We are on time. We attend the wedding, give them gifts, pose for a picture, greet my groom to be's family, display myself to them, and DONE! I can do this!
When we stepped into the hall that can hold 4000 people easily, I felt the tension in the air! Now-a-days people are so busy they don’t attend 3days wedding! So, our 3days wedding is now 2days wedding with a reception in the evening and followed by a wedding the next morning. And since reception times don't bother working time, many people attend reception! Maybe that is why dad chose to come in the morning to show me! Just to avoid many people's eyes!
Anyways the hall is not fully populated. Maybe, first circle relatives are the only people in it. Of course, except for us! I could see people talking and murmuring! No music instruments playing! And the priest sitting in a chair in the front row! Looks like my dad knows the people in the hall so well. They all greet him! Myself and my mom sat at the last row while my dad went in the crowd and climbed up the stage.
I can see there are some problems in the wedding. Looks like it has stopped! Poor girl! She must be feeling bad! It's not fair to stop the wedding at this point! Or is someone ill? I don’t feel good about my groom-to-be now! I feel like it’s a bad omen! Hehe I know! I'm simply making lame excuses!
My dad is all serious in talking! He talks with a man almost 6ft high and should be the same age as my dad! My dad is a little short and so am I! I'm 5.1! My sisters are of the same height as me now! They will outgrow me soon! Hmph! They are coming to us now, my dad, that 6ft uncle and a guy just like that uncle! His son may be!
"Perusappa (that’s how my dad calls me. meaning big girl) come with us" he said. My mom and I went along with them. I kinda like that guy. He should be the same age as me or smaller maybe. He has this friendly aura around him and smiled at me warmly. I smiled back at him. We entered a room saying "groom's". So, I'm guessing they are groom side people for this wedding. And I literally don't know on whose side are we attending this wedding! As we are talking with the groom's side, I think the groom's side is our far, far distant relative! I know I'm sarcastic! I'm evil!
"Perusappa, this is Rajashekar. My friend and our relatives. I didn't know we were coming for his son's wedding. Because I got the invitation from the bride's side. Bride Smirthi is the daughter of Palanisamy, our relative. Looks like in some circumstances the bride's family left the wedding before the sun dawned! Now Rishi went out frustrated. It's his wedding. He is the first son of Rajashekar. (pointing to the guy)He is Ravi, younger brother of Rishi. They have no mother. I know this is going to be shocking. But I wish you would marry Rishi. He is a nice man. I know him in his business. And beyond everything I know their family well. It will be for your best future. what say?"
Whoa! Whaaat? My dad wants me to marry a guy whom I don’t know?(Hehe anyways I'm going to marry a man whom I don’t know). Cut the crap D. He wants me to marry a guy to whose wedding we have come to attend?
They attended their reception yesterday eve! They probably loved each other! They might have done some dirty stuff together(I know I'm a little over reacting). Who knows how long they might have talked on the phone? They might at least have talked dirty stuff! (Am I a dirty minded girl?)
No, No, No, No! Not happening!
I looked at my mom! She looks shocked as hell! That 6ft uncle and his son stand right in that room! What can we possibly talk about!? D it’s your life! Talk now or go to hell! My mind warned me. I call her 'Mindy'. She is sometimes a friend and many times a foe.
"Dad, can we talk in private for a minute?" I asked dad. Wow! How brave of you?!!! Good job!
"Sure kanna(an endearment)! Guna we will be right outside." said that uncle and they both left the room.
I looked at my dad. He has this stern look on his face. I know we can't beat him! I huffed! But my mom voiced out for me.
"Ennanga(endearment for husband) it's not fair. You are doing wrong to our kid. I can't accept this. I heard this is a love marriage. That boy was in love with that girl. How can you do this to our kid? I know your friendship and your trust in this family is high. But this is our girl's life. You cannot make a decision hastily!"
My dad looked at her and said " Do you think I have not thought it through? I’m just proposing to her the option. Shekar will talk to his son. Perusappa and Rishi will talk in private and then we will decide on what to do."
Whaat the hell?! He is in love with someone? I'm so not getting married to this guy. Atleast I get to talk to him in private before deciding on anything. Hopefully he won’t accept this marriage! If he does on odds like family reputation or prestige then I should say a strict no. I wonder if they had a silly fight.
Chapter 3 — Hell No!
D's PoV
Ravi came to me! Me and my mom were sitting on the bed in the groom's room. He said "Hello! I know you must be cursing us right now! But trust me, my brother doesn’t really know what love is! The relationship that he had with Smirthi is not love! He thought it was love! And I can assure you that my brother has not crossed any limits with her."
Wow! What does that suppose to mean? No D, Don’t get distracted. Be strong in your refusal. No one can force you into this wedding.
when he saw me not telling anything he added "I wish I can call you 'anni' (way to call an elder brother's wife). I really like you so much".
I smiled at him. I already like this guy, he is friendly, he tries to soothe the hot situation, and he is nice to me!
My mom said "Let’s see, kanna. Has your brother come already?"
"Yes, aunty. Dad and bro are talking in the next room!"
I could literally feel my heart thumping in my throat. Why god Why? Why does it have to be me? My dad is calling our relatives to this hall. Already many of our relatives came. My palms are sweaty. Looks like the priest said there is another auspicious time in the morning for the wedding to happen. That is 9.45 to 10.30am.
My dad and 6ft uncle came in and asked me to go to the next room where his son is waiting to talk to me! Is this really happening?! I clutched my mom's hand! She patted my back and came with me to the doorstep of the room. I knocked on the door and pushed it open. My mom nodded her head and went to the room where my dad is. With a thundering heart and wobbly feet I entered the room.
There he is. 6ft tall, Silk shirt and dhoti, Clean cut hair, and Toned up muscles. I could see his arm and shoulder blades flex. (D stop drooling) He is manly from behind. With his posture I can say He is tense, just like me.
I cleared my throat. " Excu...." my words stuck in my throat!
HELL NO!He turned and took me in with his eyes. He was quiet for a minute and started talking.
"See I'm sorry, I, without any intentions though, put you in this position. I really don’t want this marriage to happen between us. I care least about my reputation or family's good will. This hasty wedding is sure going to be a failure. I will tell my dad that you said no, and you tell your dad that I said no. I'm sure they will drop this crazy idea."
With that he walked past me and left the room. He has this addicting scent, maybe from his perfume! D you are incredible, go tell your dad your decision. Mindy insisted!
I went to the room where they all are. I looked at my dad and 6ft uncle or should I say shekar uncle or Mama?
Before he could say anything I said, "I am ok with this wedding!"
Everyone has different emotions. My dad, Shekar uncle and Ravi have wide smiles on their faces. My mom has an unsure smile. Rishi looks like I have dropped a nuclear missile on him.
As you all might have guessed, Yes, He is the man that made butterflies in my tummy when I was in 8th grade! I don’t know what came over me, I just felt it right. I never heard what he said, Or I never registered what I heard from him to my Brain! He said nothing when I said I'm ready to get married to him.He went out of the room in a swift motion.
The beautician girls who came in the morning were still there. They started doing my makeup and made me more beautiful than I already am! (I hear what you guys say)
My dad had my sisters take a flight from Trichy to Coimbatore. Anyways, they won’t be here when I get my nuptial tied. Since all our relatives are in Coimbatore, they all came in 1hr. It's 10am already and the priest asks us to make things fast. When I came out of the room, I saw Rishi (I'm going to call him that). (A* look at me, I’m already giving names to my hubby. Am I not cute!?) He was doing the rituals as said by the priest. I sat beside him and not once did he look up at me.
Our wedding happened with a pin-drop silence in the hall and my sisters came at last. They had their dreams of glamming up at my wedding and here I am, ruined all of their dreams. It’s my wedding after all and I get to be the center of attraction. Am I really Evil!?
We all went to eat our breakfast. It was so delicious. So many varieties. I started eating right away and my sister Shanu nudged me with her elbow. She was sitting next to me. I looked at her and asked what.
She said "I don’t know, but I think you should wait for mama to feed you with sweets and you should do the same".
"He is raging in anger, Shanu! Don't you dare tease or do something funny and make the situation worse than it already is." I warned her. Because I see the glint of mischievous look on her face and I know what my sister is capable of.
It was not a regular wedding. So the regular drama of sobbing and farewell doesn't happen. Everyone came in line and wished us good luck with presents. We took photographs and retired to Rishi's home or should I say our home...!?
We exited the humongous wedding hall and there were cars lined up in front. I could see the posters lying on the ground with Rishi and Smirthi's name on it. Looks like they were pasted on the cars. Now since the bride is not Smirthi anymore, they tore them off.
Good for me!
Rishi and I got in the decorated car's back seat and Ravi got in the front seat. I thanked all the gods I know for that. Who could dare go with him alone when I did the complete opposite of what he asked me to do? My dad, mom, sisters and Shekar uncle got in the next car. Some other relatives hopped in the remaining cars and we all went to my new Home.
On the way, I zipped up my mouth and no one started up a conversation, and I'm thankful for that. I was peeping out the windows and secretly stealing glances of my man. His face is rock hard with no expressions. I am now terrified. I should have done what he asked me to do in the first place.
Whoa hold on D! You did something that cannot be revoked. Now muster up your courage. You can tame this man D. After all You have some tricks up your sleeves. You know you are irresistible! Come on D you can do this!
Argh! Ignore Mindy, she is stupid!
