Chapter 1 — A Mark In The Dark
Caroline Ashbourne's POV:
God, I actually slept with some random wolf last night.
His low, rough growls were still echoing in my ears—like a death sentence.
And I could still feel the moment he sank his teeth into my neck.
Something poured into me through that bite, rushing through my veins... burning, and weirdly familiar.
I remembered freezing up completely.
Then a voice slipped into my head.
Not mine.
His.
"Don't be scared."
Just three short words, so soft it almost felt like a dream.
At the time, I brushed it off as the alcohol messing with me.
But now, thinking back...
D*mn.
That was the mate bond.
He had marked me.
I took a slow breath and told myself, "Stay calm. Don't start anything."
I was a lone wolf—no pack, no backing. Just a rogue in shifter society.
Tangling with a big shot like him? I wouldn't stand a chance.
I pulled on my clothes and was about to slip out quietly when I heard his voice from the doorway.
"Hold on. My personal doctor's on his way."
I turned.
Sh*t. It was my boss, Nathaniel Whitfield.
Wasn't he supposed to be the untouchable, ice-cold Alpha?
After last night, untouchable wasn't exactly the word I'd use. More like a wolf who'd been starved for years.
Nathaniel was Alpha of the Moonsilver Pack and the CEO of Crescent Holdings.
Aurelias was where most shifters had settled—learning to blend into human society, building lives in every industry you could name.
And the most powerful company among them? Crescent Holdings, owned by the Moonsilver Pack.
They didn't care about bloodline or pack status; skill was the only thing that got you in the door.
For a rogue like me, working my way up in a pack-run company was the only shot at becoming a full pack member someday.
So I used a scent-masking serum to pass my wolf spirit off as beta-level and managed to land a job at Crescent Holdings.
"Come here. Eat something first." He moved aside, making space for me, then added, "I'm in a meeting."
His collar shifted, revealing a trail of bruises and bite marks below his collarbone—right in view of the camera, where every executive could see.
After I finished eating, he spoke again, voice lower. "Sorry about last night. I'd been drinking... didn't realize you were an omega. I got carried away.
"Stay here. I have to go into the office today. I'll have Preston take you home."
"Alpha, I can get back on my own. Really, it's no trouble," I said quickly.
He glanced up, a faint, almost wounded look in his eyes. "Are you saying I didn't perform well enough?"
"What? No—!"
My heart was suddenly pounding.
But his Alpha aura was so thick in the air I could barely breathe.
As if I'd ever dare criticize him.
Soon the pack doctor arrived.
I sat there, embarrassed and stiff, as he examined me and applied a healing salve.
Got to give it to him—he really was an Alpha. The size alone...
Tore me up pretty good.
Once I was patched up, they finally let me go.
When I stepped out, Nathaniel was already gone.
Preston Vaughn was waiting by the door.
He was an old friend from college, now part of the Moonsilver Pack—and Nathaniel's only personal assistant.
I caught his smirk and wanted to disappear. "Did I really get into the wrong car last night?"
"Yep. And now looks like you might be the future Luna of the Moonsilver Pack," he teased.
I frowned. "What're you talking about?"
Luna of the Moonsilver Pack?
Yeah, right. An omega as Luna? How would an Alpha like Nathaniel keep his authority then? Not to mention I was a packless rogue.
Preston didn't know I was an omega—he just couldn't resist needling me. "Hey, last night you were all over him. The Alpha had a few drinks, but he's a total germaphobe. Could barely move, worried you'd throw up on him.
"You even ripped his shirt to shreds."
I dropped my head, feeling hollow.
"He was going to drop you at your place, but he thought you were too out of it, so he brought you back here.
"So... you and him, huh?" Preston looked me over.
I forced a weak smile and pointed to the back of my neck. "What you see is what you get."
Preston shook his head and laughed. "D*mn, you two are already bonded.
"Don't tell me you're his fated mate."
I stayed quiet.
Fated mate? Seriously? I'm an omega.
Even with serum masking my scent to beta level so I could sneak into the company, I couldn't change what I was.
If the Elders on the Council found out, I probably wouldn't live through the night.
Chapter 2 — Morning-after
Caroline's POV:
The day after the Moon Festival, most of the staff at Crescent Holdings still had the day off.
But for a lone wolf like me—new to the South Continent and without a pack—rest was a luxury I couldn't afford.
I was barely scraping together enough for rent, for crying out loud!
I didn't let Preston drop me off right in front of the building.
It was the Alpha's car.
The last thing I needed was the whole company knowing I'd gotten out of it.
I hopped out two blocks away.
Then I ducked into a cramped hole-in-the-wall shop.
"Give me a morning-after pill," I told the wolf behind the counter.
They were rogues, too—cast out from their packs.
But they were better off than me; they knew their medicine, and their prices were fair, so folks like me tended to go there.
I'd even bought my serum from them.
He glanced at me. "That'll be a hundred bucks."
In a city like this, an omega buying that kind of thing wasn't exactly headline news.
I dry-swallowed the pill and let out a shaky breath.
There was no way I was having his kid.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
A name flashed on the screen—Robert Harlow.
Instant nausea.
He was my boyfriend, a Beta wolf.
We'd been together for five years—long-distance for the last two—only for him to hook up with my so-called best friend behind my back.
I didn't want to waste another second of breath on them.
If I did, I'd probably end up killing them both.
I was about to shove my phone back into my pocket when a friend request popped up on social media.
"Nathaniel"
I froze.
The Alpha I'd slept with last night. My boss. The Alpha of the Moonsilver Pack.
Why was he adding me?
In what capacity? As my boss? Or... as the guy from the one-night stand?
My jaw tightened. I hit Decline.
I was a weapons designer. I'd only joined Crescent Holdings last year.
The company was the largest manufacturer of custom weapons in the South Continent, with clients all over the world.
They dealt in bespoke orders—mostly silver-forged blades, armor, and combat gear that was exported primarily to packs on other continents.
Under normal circumstances, someone at Nathaniel's level? I wouldn't even catch a glimpse of him.
Last night was a total fluke.
He'd only shown up at the celebration party because we'd shattered sales records during the Moon Festival.
Just then, a notification pinged in the company group chat. "Meeting in the conference room in ten minutes."
I shoved my phone away and sprinted toward the office.
Crescent Tower.
In the elevator, I ran into Gina Morris.
She was a coworker from the design department, also a wolf—and an omega like me.
But she was a full member of the Moonsilver Pack, with a pack to back her up.
Me? I had no one.
"Caroline, don't you just hate business formal?" She looked me up and down. "Why are you suddenly wearing a skirt suit today?!"
No wolf liked wearing that kind of constriction.
I tugged at my hem. "Gotta make sure my 'accomplishments' stand out, so I have to put the real assets on display."
"Heh heh..." She eyed my chest, then slapped my ass. "Hey, any guy who marries you is one lucky bastard."
Ow—that stung!
I gritted my teeth and didn't make a sound.
Right as the elevator doors were about to slide shut, a hand shot in, forcing them back open.
Preston stepped aside, and Nathaniel walked in behind him, clad in a black suit.
Gina and I quickly pressed ourselves against the side walls.
The Alpha's scent flooded the confined space instantly.
I kept my head down, terrified to look at him.
We were close enough that I could smell it on him—the faint, lingering scent of sex.
I bit my lip and forced myself not to think about last night.
My wolf stirred restlessly in the back of my mind, startling me.
The serum had side effects—they made your inner wolf sleep for long stretches.
But I hadn't had a choice. If I wanted a shot at joining a pack, I had to do whatever it took.
The elevator finally shuddered to a halt on the 28th floor, and Gina and I bolted out.
"That scared the life out of me!" Gina clutched her chest. "Caroline, you know what? After the Moon Festival party last night, people saw a woman in the Alpha's car."
"That black SUV of his." Gina leaned in close to my ear, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "They said she was kissing him in the car. Kissing—him! The Ice King! The untouchable leader! The whole pack is going nuts, it's all over the company chat!"
My throat tightened, as if an invisible hand was squeezing it.
"Who said that?"
"People from marketing. They were working late last night and saw it in the underground garage.
"They didn't see her face, but it was definitely a woman." Gina looked positively thrilled. "Who do you think it is? The Alpha's never had a single rumor about a partner before!"
The heat in my cheeks refused to fade.
"Don't know." I forced a smile. "Maybe they got it wrong."
"How could they get it wrong? That car's the only one like it in all of Aurelias—"
"We're gonna be late." I picked up the pace. "Meeting."
Ten minutes later, the meeting started.
Brian Clarke, the director, stood at the front, going over the revenue numbers from the festival.
His gaze kept drifting over to me.
"The best-selling item this festival is the work of Caroline from Design—the 'Moonthorn' series of short blades."
Every head in the room turned toward me at once.
I sat up straighter, pasting a polite smile on my face. "Thank you, Mr. Clarke."
"Don't thank me," Brian said, holding my gaze a couple of seconds longer than he did anyone else's. "Thank your design skills. Several pack weapons buyers overseas asked specifically who the designer was."
A low murmur rippled through the room.
Right as the meeting adjourned, Preston knocked on the conference room door.
"Caroline, the Alpha wants to see you on the top floor."
The room went dead silent.
Everyone's eyes stabbed into me like needles—shock, curiosity, suspicion, and a fear they couldn't quite name.
The 30th floor was secured by a biometric lock keyed to wolf insignia. It was the Alpha's restricted zone.
When a regular pack member got called up there, everyone saw it as a predator locking onto its prey.
And I wasn't even part of the Moonsilver Pack.
"Understood." I stood up.
Brian frowned. "You don't look so good. Want to take the day off?"
I managed a weak joke. "No need. If I don't make it back, just consider those sketches my inheritance to you."
I followed Preston into the elevator.
He scanned his wolf insignia, and the elevator began its slow ascent.
"Since it's just the two of us," I said, looking at him. "What does he really want with me?"
Preston grinned.
"He didn't say, actually. But..." He paused for effect. "He's in a pretty good mood."
Of course he was in a good mood.
He'd gone so many rounds last night he'd practically torn me apart.
Chapter 3 — His Proposal
Caroline's POV:
"Come in."
I pushed the door open and stepped inside—and right away, his scent surrounded me.
He was sitting at his desk, glued to his computer screen. The thin fabric of his shirt stretched over the muscles of his chest, and I could still see the marks I'd left on his neck last night. I took a slow breath, trying to settle my nerves, but my wolf stirred again, restless.
Calm down, I told myself. Just calm down.
He was leaning back in his office chair, collar of his black shirt undone just enough to show his collarbone and the shadow beneath his throat. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, and he was flipping through some papers, not even glancing up as I entered. Behind me, Preston closed the door quietly.
"Alpha, you wanted to see me."
"Mm." He finally looked over at me, but only for a second before his eyes dropped back to the documents.
A heavy silence filled the room.
Then he stood and started walking toward me. I had to admit—the guy had a presence. Sharp nose, thin lips, those dark blue eyes behind wire-framed glasses... Even I caught myself looking twice.
And his body... My fingers still remembered every ridge of those abs from the night before.
"Alpha, did you need something?"
"Sit." He changed direction and dropped onto the couch instead.
I walked over and took a seat about six feet away from him.
"Closer." He patted the cushion beside him.
I hesitated, then finally moved over.
For a moment, he just stared at me, like he was turning something over in his head.
"What are your thoughts about last night?"
My eyes flicked to the bruises on his neck. "Alpha, I'm sorry. Last night was my fault." I tried to sound mature, reasonable.
"Don't apologize." He straightened up, cutting me off. "I'm the one who initiated it. My wolf has already recognized you as my mate."
I opened my mouth, struggling to find words. "Then... maybe we could just pretend it never—"
"The mate bond is already forming," he said, his voice cooling. "How do you pretend that didn't happen?"
"That's not what I meant. I mean—" I rushed to explain, my face growing hot. I was so embarrassed I almost wished I could shift right here and crawl into an air vent. "I mean you don't owe me anything, Alpha. No responsibility—"
"Do you want to be the Luna of the Moonsilver Pack?"
I blinked. "What?"
We held each other's gaze.
"If last night left you pregnant, keep the pup," he went on, not moving an inch. "If not, I'll still stand by what happened. I take full responsibility."
I stayed quiet.
I knew about him—he came from an old-school, traditional family. Once a mate bond was acknowledged, duty followed.
But I was a nobody. No lineage, no connections, no family name to offer.
Getting tied to an Alpha like him would only hold him back.
Not to mention... I still had Robert hanging over me. Letting someone new in wasn't an option.
"I took the morning-after pill. I don't want to be your Luna. Let's just... leave last night in the past."
His eyes darkened. He definitely hadn't expected a no.
I turned to leave.
I was a lone wolf, bottom of the barrel—no Alpha in their right mind would really want to claim someone like me.
Robert had said the same thing once. "I'll take responsibility."
And then he'd taken that responsibility straight into Sandra Wood's bed.
"Wait." He stood up.
"Was there something else, Alpha?"
"Your contact info." He held out his phone.
"The Srindia Arms Expo," he said, his tone shifting into something more businesslike. "There are two slots for our company. You're on the shortlist. Adding me will make the follow-ups easier."
My breath caught.
The Srindia Arms Expo.
That was the dream for every weapons designer in our world.
The expo was the highest-tier event in the werewolf arms community. Only the top designers got to showcase their work there. Getting a piece selected could jump your career forward by years.
He was using it as leverage.
"As for my earlier question," he added, "you don't have to answer now. Take your time."
I pulled out my phone and added him.
"Added." I slipped my phone back into my pocket and met his eyes. "But about being your Luna... my answer's still no."
Then I turned and got out of there.
Back at my desk, Gina leaned over, grinning. "So? What was it like up in the Alpha's office?"
"Want to go next time? I'll put in a good word for you."
She clutched her chest dramatically. "You're terrifying."
"Caroline!" Brian jogged over, a bright smile on his face.
"Mr. Clarke?"
"The Srindia Arms Expo list came through. You and I both made it."
"I just heard."
The whole design department was buzzing. A newcomer—barely settled in—landing a spot like that?
I could hear the senior designers grumbling already.
I figured Nathaniel was probably trying to make up for last night.
Since I'd turned down being his Luna.
I pushed the thought aside and tried to focus on my work.
Then my phone buzzed. A text from Robert, my Beta boyfriend.
"You free tonight? Want to catch a movie?"
I typed back, "Sure."
Right after hitting send, I took a screenshot and posted it on my feed—visible only to my "best friend" Sandra.
Caption read, "Five years. Some things never change."
Just like clockwork, Sandra—never one to stay out of my business—sent a message almost immediately.
"Hey girl! My friends and I are hitting the movies tonight too. What are you seeing? What time?"
I glanced at it and didn't even bother replying.
