Chapter 1

Angela's POV
I’m about to marry Willard Hughes.
This is my final day as Angela Kinsey. In less than three hours, I’ll be Angela Hughes.
“Your mom must be so proud of you, watching from heaven,” Darlene said, adjusting the hem of my wedding gown. “I can’t believe you look this beautiful.” She wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye.
“Darlene, you're going to make me cry, and I’ll have to redo my makeup,” I joked.
I stood on the small platform, gazing at myself in the full-length mirror. I was wearing a real wedding dress. It’s real. My dream was about to come true.
“Darlene, can you believe I’m marrying Willard? It’s unbelievable,” I turned to her. “I, Angela Kinsey, the poor girl from Cold Moon Pack, am about to become the future Beta’s legal wife. I feel like all my luck has led up to today.”
“Yes, yes,” Darlene rolled her eyes. “You’ve won the lottery, I know.”
“Oh, Darlene,” I pleaded, looking at her. “I know you don’t like Willard that much, but can’t you just show a little excitement? This is my dream coming true.”
“It’s not that I don’t like him,” Darlene sighed heavily. “It’s just... he’s the future Beta, and you’re wolfless. I’m just looking out for you, that’s all.”
“I love you,” I said, walking over to her and taking her hand. “You’re the best friend in the world, which is why you’re my maid of honor.”
“Because I’m your best friend, I worry,” she whispered. “We both know Willard has an unforgettable ex, Jennifer.”
“But they’ve been broken up for so long,” I hurried to explain. “I believe the Moon Goddess matched me with my true mate. Darlene. I’ll be happy, right?”
“You’re right,” Darlene smiled after a pause. “I always worry for no reason. Darling, you’ll be the happiest bride.”
“Thank you for your blessing,” I hugged her tightly.
There was a soft knock on the door. “Bride, the ceremony is about to begin.”
“It’s time to go, darling,” Darlene whispered. “Are you ready?”
My heart was racing, but I was ready to see Willard. “I’m ready.”
---
I stood at the altar, excitement flooding me for the day I had longed for my whole life.
“Willard Hughes, do you take Angela Kinsey to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love her till the last day of your life?” The priest’s words brought an excited smile to my lips.
“I do, Jennifer,” Willard said, holding up a twelve-carat diamond ring, gazing at me with deep affection.
The crowd erupted into whispers, as if the room had exploded.
What? Jennifer? His first love?
My mind went blank. I raised my hand and slapped him hard. His face turned to the side with the force of the blow.
“My name is Angela! Were you thinking of your ex when you were about to marry me?”
“Willard,” Jennifer suddenly rushed up to him from the spectator’s balcony. “Are you okay?”
I didn’t even know Jennifer had returned to Cold Moon Pack.
Willard shielded Jennifer behind him. “Angela, don’t hurt Jennifer. Things aren’t as you think. I... we...”
“Oh, spare me,” I spat, furious. “I only believe what I see.”
“She’s right, Willard.” Jennifer smirked. “This is exactly what it looks like. Willard and I have always been in love.”
“Jennifer, now is not the time,” Willard growled urgently.
“Why not tell her the truth?” Jennifer shrugged. “If it weren’t for her mother threatening you with a life-saving favor, I should be the one marrying you today.”
Jennifer bit her lip, glaring at me. “I’ll be honest with you. When I returned to Cold Moon Pack a month ago, Willard told me that as long as I wanted, he could marry me at any time.”
“To put it plainly, you’re just a thief who stole my happiness! A robber!” She grew more enraged, her face turning bright red, and her breathing became frantic.
“Your...” I was stunned, staring at her. “Willard is my mate.”
“He may be your mate,” she grinned, “but I have his heart.”
“Bitch!” I screamed, and just as my palm was about to hit her cheek, Willard grabbed my hand.
“Angela, enough,” Willard roared, his eyes burning with anger. “I will marry you.”
I suddenly felt as though all the strength had drained from my body. I numbly stared at Willard’s cold face.
Willard and I were a family-arranged marriage, or as some would call it, a forced union.
My mother sacrificed her life to save the eight-year-old Willard during a rogue attack. Willard’s father, Dean, arranged our marriage as a way to repay the debt.
I’ve known for a long time that I would become his wife.
After my father remarried, my marriage has always been a vital tool for the family and Beta.
Like many nobles, I received an elitist education devoid of fun or friends. Yet, I still strove to be an excellent Beta bride.
In fact, even though I was wolfless, my scores in school and class outshone many of the she-wolves. But evidently, that meant little to Willard and brought me no respect.
I dreamed of having the perfect wedding, and Willard was trying to steal it from me. I poured all my effort into every detail of this wedding to make it flawless. But he ruined it with his terrible behavior, confessing his love to another woman at my wedding.
“Get away,” I yanked my hand from his.
I ripped off my veil and threw it to the floor as if it were trash.
“You bastard!” I gritted my teeth. “How dare you do this to me? You’ve humiliated me. You’ve broken our promise. I’m not marrying you! This wedding ends now.”
His eyes widened in shock, his face full of disbelief. I could hear the whispers from the guests behind me, but I didn’t care. I ignored everyone’s attempts to stop me, lifted my skirt, and fled the wedding hall, tears streaming down my face.
I should be grateful that my father and Uncle Dean weren’t at the church ceremony, waiting for us at the wedding hotel instead.
Otherwise, I might not have been able to leave the church so easily.

Chapter 2

Angela's POV
I ran blindly through the streets, the weight of my wedding gown dragging me down, tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t believe it. My mate cheated on me during my own wedding—was there anything more absurd than this?
I had no idea how far I had run, but suddenly, my high heels caught on something, and pain shot up my foot. It was only then that I finally took in my surroundings.
I seemed to have ended up at the hotel where my wedding was being held. As I stepped through the doors, I heard the officiant announce, “Welcome, the bride and groom!”
I pushed the double doors open through my blurry vision… and saw the bride and groom standing on the stage.
Confusion hit me hard, and I blinked rapidly. Did I walk into the wrong hall?
I lifted my dress, pulled out my phone from the silk garter on my thigh, and checked the hotel’s event schedule. I stepped outside and looked around. This was the East Hall. My wedding was supposed to be in the South Hall. I must have been so dizzy from the shock of Willard’s betrayal.
The music playing was the same song from my wedding, “A Thousand Years.”
I stood there, breathless, watching the happy couple exchange their vows, and my heart shattered into a million pieces.
Exhausted and thirsty, I needed a place to sit down. I had nowhere else to go.
The banquet hall was packed with people, but I pushed through the crowd until I found an empty chair at the bar, and sat down.
“Who’s this? Why is she dressed like that at someone else’s wedding?” I overheard someone whispering. I didn’t care.
"Can I get you something to drink?" A handsome young man at the bar asked me.
"Cosmopolitan," I replied, my voice weak.
"Coming right up," he nodded and turned to make my drink.
I absentmindedly gazed around at the celebrating guests, my heart heavy with grief.
“Here you go,” the man set my drink in front of me. I weakly smiled, then drained the glass in one go. “Another, please.”
"Easy there, girl. The night’s just getting started," he chuckled. "Or you'll regret it in the morning."
“I won’t regret it like I did today,” I insisted, pushing the empty glass toward him.
He nodded, giving me another drink. This time, I sipped it slowly, my mind drifting back to the first time I met Willard.
When I was five, my mother was killed during an attack by rogues while trying to protect Willard.
On the day of her funeral, the sky was overcast, the rain falling in steady, mournful drizzles. I stood at her grave, crying uncontrollably.
Uncle Dean arrived with Willard, and he took my hand.
“From now on, we are your family. I will always protect you.”
He was kind to me, never letting me suffer. As I got older, entering adolescence, I began to develop feelings for him.
Now that I think back, the first time I saw Jennifer, she was already part of Willard’s team. She was always the most popular girl. Even after she left Willard, plunging him into despair, he could never forget her.
It wasn’t until my 18th birthday that Willard told me he was my mate.
I was surprised, especially since I was Wolfless. For someone destined to be Beta, I wasn’t an ideal match, but somehow, it all happened.
I muttered to myself, draining my glass and asking the bartender for another.
I had been so blind, so naïve. I gave him all my love, all my trust.
He never turned me away, but he never initiated anything either. I thought that was just his nature. Now I realize the truth—it was because he didn’t love me. He wasn’t the one for me. As I dreamed of building a life with him, he was still in love with Jennifer.
But now it was too late. I had run away from my wedding. Now, I was nothing—just a Wolfless girl despised by my father and stepmother, without a mate, without a family. I had nothing left.
The noise around me suddenly stopped, and curiosity made me lean forward to see what was happening on stage.
When I saw the groom, my breath hitched in my chest.
He looked like he had fallen straight from the heavens. His black hair was neatly styled, perfectly complementing his ruggedly handsome face. His smooth forehead and thick brows made him appear dangerously alluring. His stunning green eyes were framed by long, dark lashes. From where I sat, his strong nose, full lips, and high cheekbones were striking. His chiseled jawline made him look impossibly perfect.
His lips parted in a charming smile, but he didn’t reveal his flawless white teeth. I glanced at his outfit—a sharp suit, the kind every girl dreams of seeing on a groom.
Shaking my head, I grabbed my Cosmopolitan. I snapped out of my daze at the thought of his well-toned body and handsome face. Maybe it was because my gaze had lingered too long, but he suddenly looked in my direction.
The wedding ceremony continued.
“We gather here today to celebrate the marriage of Cassian Payne and Nydia Skinner. If anyone objects, speak now, or forever hold your peace,” the officiant asked, stepping forward to cue the kiss.
I held my breath, knowing this was just the normal routine of a wedding, but I didn’t expect what happened next.
Suddenly, the door burst open with a loud crash.
A tall, lean man with deep brown hair, wearing a white shirt and beige jacket, stepped in, shouting, “I object!”
“I won’t let this marriage happen! Nydia is the love of my life. Rejecting her was my biggest mistake,” he declared, striding up to the stage and taking the bride’s hand. “So, sweetheart, will you give me another chance?”
“Yes…” Nydia started to speak, but was cut off.
“What are you doing? Are you out of your mind? My daughter will not marry a poor soldier. If you marry him, you will be disowned,” her father shouted.
“I don’t care. It’s time I get what I want… Yes, Ashley, I will marry you. I love you so much…” Nydia said, then jumped into the man’s arms, kissing him.
The man removed the ring from her finger and replaced it with his own. Together, they ran down the aisle, leaving the ceremony behind.

Chapter 3

Angela’s POV
The air was thick with gasps, and wide eyes were everywhere. Everyone in the room stared at the abandoned groom on the stage. Whispers began to ripple through the crowd.
“What happened?” I asked the person next to me.
“I heard that guy is the bride’s first love,” they whispered back.
“First love?” I echoed. “Wow. The groom must be mortified,” someone else chimed in.
“Yeah, this is awkward,” another person agreed.
I glanced at the miserable groom on stage and felt an odd sense of solidarity. After all, misery loves company.
A thought flashed through my mind: why is it that the heartless always find happiness, while we’re left to suffer?
I took a gulp of wine, emptying my glass in one go, then slammed it down on the table, declaring, “If she won’t marry him, I will!”
Still wearing my wedding dress, I staggered to the stage and grabbed the mic from the host, Mike.
With as much emotion as I could muster, I announced to the groom, “Darling, I’ve loved you for over a decade. I thought we’d never get our chance, but the Moon Goddess has given me another shot. That bad woman doesn’t appreciate you. I do. Let’s get married.”
I gave him a pleading look, silently praying he’d understand what I meant. But he just stood there, staring at me like a deer caught in headlights.
I sighed in frustration. Just as I was about to give up…
“YES, I will.”
He flashed a dazzling smile and reached out, pulling me into a tight hug. His face buried in my neck, and I felt something unfamiliar, but I chose to ignore it.
My breath became uneven. Can someone please get him off me before I have a heart attack?
---
Cassian’s POV
“What do you want me to do?” I nearly leapt out of my chair, double-checking with my grandfather to make sure I hadn’t heard him wrong.
“Get married,” my grandfather, Orlando Payne, repeated calmly. “I want you to marry before my birthday. That’s the best gift you could give me.”
I snorted, mocking the idea of such a terrible birthday gift. “Why do you think I need to get married? I’m still young, and I haven’t found my mate yet. I’m not just going to settle down with some random she-wolf.”
“You’re 29, Cassian,” my grandfather pointed out matter-of-factly. “I married your grandmother when I was 20. You’re at the age where you should be settling down.”
Now, I regretted making the spur-of-the-moment decision to visit my grandparents at the Cold Moon Pack. Maybe I should’ve stayed at the Blue Moon Pack instead of coming back to this pressure to marry.
Now, I found myself trapped in my grandfather’s study—or rather, his personal interrogation room—as he rambled on about things I had no interest in.
“I’m not interested in marriage,” I arrogantly told him. “Marriage isn’t for me.”
“You’ve never been married, so how do you know?”
“I just know.”
Grandfather laughed, pulling a pricey cigar from his suit pocket and lighting it. He took a long drag, exhaling a thick cloud of white smoke. “If I were you, I wouldn’t be so arrogant, kid. Look at your Beta, Sean. He swore he’d never marry, and now look at him. He’s happily married to his mate, Emma. They’re expecting their first child, and Sean’s about to become a father.”
I knew where this was headed. Of course, my grandfather had heard about Sean’s bride being pregnant. As a former Alpha King, he hoped his lineage would continue into the next generation.
For centuries, the position of Alpha King had passed down through male heirs. Since I was my father’s only child, Grandfather was probably worried that if I didn’t marry soon, the Alpha bloodline would be in danger.
He probably thought I was too old and would miss my chance to have children.
“Don’t you envy your friend?” Grandfather pulled me from my thoughts. “He’s finally going to have his own child.”
“No.”
Grandfather took another drag of his cigar, a sly smile curling on his lips, making me furrow my brow.
“What a heartless answer,” he teased.
If only he knew how much Sean had suffered for this child. The once-gentle, beautiful Emma had become a temperamental nightmare during her pregnancy, and Sean had borne the brunt of it. He had to deal with his volatile wife every day while scrambling to learn all about pregnancy and caring for a new mother. I could never let myself end up like that, never.
Grandfather continued, clearly enjoying himself. “You’re still too young. Did you know your mother, Kate, has already arranged countless blind dates with she-wolves for you?”
I knew it. My mother, Kate, had been more relaxed when I was under 25 and still unmarried, but now that I was 29, she’d lost all composure and become obsessed with finding me a mate.
“I’m sure you’ll eventually marry a beautiful she-wolf,” Grandfather added.
I frowned at him. “I’m not interested.”
“Then tell your mother.”
Suddenly, my chair felt uncomfortable. I regretted coming here, should’ve known better.
“You can tell her I’m not interested in her matchmaking,” I grumbled.
“I will,” Grandfather responded quickly, and the tone made me even more uneasy. He was clearly negotiating something.
“But I have one condition.”
I rolled my eyes. “What condition?”
Grandfather’s grin widened, and I wondered if I was walking right into his trap.
“I want you to find yourself a bride.”
I sighed deeply and looked at him helplessly. “Are we really going back to this?”
“We never left the topic, Cassian,” my grandfather retorted. “We just got off track.”
“Grandfather, I’ll say this one last time.” I stood up, preparing to leave. “I. Will. Not. Marry.”
As I reached the door, Grandfather spoke again.
“Cassian, by my 80th birthday, you must introduce me to your bride…”
“I’ve told you a hundred times, I don’t…”
“Listen, Cassian.” His voice turned serious, causing me to pause. “If you don’t introduce your bride by my birthday, I’ll strip you of your right to inherit the Alpha King position. I’ll make your cousin the next Alpha instead.”
“Are you out of your mind?” I asked him rudely. “You hate weakness, and Laurel is nothing but a complete playboy. He’s like a human breeding machine, determined to plant his ‘seeds’ in every she-wolf he can. You want him to be the only heir? Do you want the Blue Moon Pack to become the battleground of Game of Thrones? He doesn’t even need you to pass the Alpha title to him. In a few decades, he’ll have his own pack.”
“Let’s just call it a harsh measure,” my sly grandfather said. “If I have to give you an ultimatum to get you to finally marry, so be it. Your grandmother and I are getting too old to keep waiting for you.”
