Chapter 1
Delia's POV
How could the child born to an Alpha and Luna be an omega? And how could an Alpha child be raised in an orphanage?
Sounds strange, right? But that’s me, the child with an Alpha aura who grew up in an orphanage since I was little.
It all started twenty years ago with a switch. The omega maid in the house secretly exchanged her child’s identity with mine, hoping her child could live a better life.
I became a child in the orphanage, while her child became the noble Alpha daughter of the Whitmore family. Her real mother stayed in the mansion, continuing to work as a maid, making sure her child lived comfortably.
Life in the orphanage was hard, but I survived. My bloodline and instincts made me sense that something wasn’t right.
Through careful searching, I finally found my biological parents. They didn’t believe me at first, but in the hospital, they eventually accepted the truth.
I thought I was returning home, but I didn’t expect to still feel like an outsider.
"Miss, the dress you changed into looks beautiful."
The staff in the bridal shop smiled politely, typical of omegas when facing someone of a higher rank.
I looked at myself in the mirror, tall figure, slender body, the Whitmore family’s long silver hair draping over my shoulders, the white floor-length gown shaping my curves.
I was indeed beautiful, but the one who should have appreciated this wasn’t here.
"Miss, Mr. Shepherd will be very happy to see you like this."
Perhaps my blank expression made her think I was displeased with her service. She quickly tried to make me respond, saying things to please me.
"Maybe. Why don’t you take a picture for me to show him?"
I flashed a smile, and the staff immediately went to fetch the phone from the table.
Turning my head, I studied myself in the mirror, no trace of a smile in my blue eyes.
Would Lucian Shepherd smile falsely at my photo, too? The Alpha, who was supposed to bond with me, yet didn’t even have time to accompany me while trying on wedding dresses.
Was it because he didn’t want to, or because he couldn’t?
My wolf whispered the truth in my heart. I furrowed my brows, pretending not to hear it.
"Miss, your phone, it seems there’s a call." The staff handed me the phone.
I took it and saw it was Agnes Storm calling, a rare friend who always had my back.
"Delia!! Where are you right now?! I have some big news! I saw your fiancé, Lucian, with Susanna!"
Agnes always spoke like a summer storm, fast and fierce, soaking my heart completely.
The fake smile on my face vanished. I knew my expression must have turned tense because the staff member holding my phone started trembling, feeling my aura.
"Where are they?"
I clenched my fingers, hearing my stiff words.
"At the hospital in the pack! Oh my goddess, do you know how ridiculous this is? An omega and an Alpha together at the hospital, they’re the center of attention there!"
Agnes rambled on, her rapid tone making me dizzy.
The hospital, again.
All eighteen-year-old werewolves were required to register their identities at the hospital’s blood test department. I found out about my special Alpha lineage there, while Susanna was discovered to be an omega, along with her parents.
That day, I thought I was the luckiest werewolf in the world. But now, I no longer feel that way.
Susanna Whitmore, a servant’s child in reality, even though she was revealed to be a weak omega, without the Whitmore family’s iconic silver hair, was still raised with care by my parents.
They even believed Susanna was fragile due to poor nutrition in the womb, so they spoiled her endlessly, never suspecting she wasn’t their child.
Even now, hearing that name still makes me sick.
That thief who stole my parents and my life dared to appear again.
"How interesting," I raised an eyebrow, sneering.
The staff glanced at me; I waved my hand, and they tactfully left the room.
Lucian, as an Alpha, took an omega to the hospital in the pack, while his legitimate fiancée was trying on wedding dresses alone, and even hearing about his whereabouts from friends.
Suddenly, the wedding dress that had looked beautiful just moments ago now seemed hideous, so ugly that I was glad I hadn’t sent Lucian a picture.
"Delia, are you sure you still want to marry Lucian? He knows Susanna is a bitch, yet he’s still tangled up with her. Do you really want to go through with the ceremony with this jerk?"
Agnes had always disliked Lucian, but she had never been so sharp with me before. It seemed she was truly angry.
"Why are you angrier than I?"
I looked at the photos Agnes sent me of Lucian and Susanna, taken secretly, zoomed in on Susanna’s face, and saw a cold smile on her lips.
Her golden-brown hair covered most of her face, her brown eyes lowered as if she didn’t dare to look at anyone, a mask hiding her chin, Lucian’s arm wrapped around her waist, and the two of them looked very close.
Two years ago, Susanna had announced that she wanted to leave her family, return to her parents, and identify with me. She firmly refused her parents’ pleas to stay, which made them resent me deeply.
It looked like I was the one who had driven their child away.
But now? Why was the person who said she wanted to leave my life showing up with my fiancé right before my wedding?
It was my fault. I shouldn’t have let her go so easily.
"I’m angry for you, Delia! She just won’t go away!"
"I'll call you back later."
I cut off Agnes’s anger, and she quickly asked, "What are you going to do?"
She knew me well. She knew I wouldn’t just ignore this.
"A wolf that can’t even protect its own mate deserves to lose everything."
I hung up the phone and looked at the wedding dress on me.
It was so ugly that even my wolf shook his head.
My fingers slid over the waistline, and I reached for the zipper, pulling it apart. The sound of tearing filled the air as bits of fabric scattered around, and I smiled with satisfaction.
I changed into my own clothes, left the store, and nodded to the staff.
"Sorry, I was a bit too rough and tore the dress. Send me the bill, I’ll pay for it later."
Leaving the store, I hailed a taxi and went straight to Lucian’s office.
"Why are you here?"
I pushed open the office door and sat down on the sofa, while Lucian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window holding his phone.
His stiff suit emphasized his Alpha aura, the sunlight highlighting his handsome face, making him look even more striking.
But now, he frowned at me impatiently.
Huh, two years. From his early gentle care to this irritation and coldness, was it because of Susanna’s return?
"You have a good meal, I have something to do here," Lucian said softly into the phone, his tone unusually tender. Then, he hung up and sat across from me with a cold expression.
"Never mind, you came at the right time. I have something to tell you."
Lucian took out a cigarette, the lighter made a crisp sound, and smoke spread through the air.
Our eyes met briefly, then turned away. There was guilt in his eyes, but he still spoke.
"Susanna is back. Our mating ceremony... needs to be postponed."
"What role does Susanna play in the mating ceremony? What does her return have to do with ours?"
That was the first thing I said after arriving, and it clearly displeased him.
I sneered, my eyes cold and sharp. Lucian sensed my anger. He paused, saying nothing, but we both felt the tension between us.
The air grew heavy, like it could burst into flames if either of us lost control.
The cigarette at the corner of Lucian’s mouth burned slowly, sparks glowing like my suppressed breath.
"Susanna... she’s very ill," Lucian said, looking at me with eyes that reminded me of his parents, as if I were being unreasonable.
He explained to me, pulling out a file from the cabinet and placing it on the table.
"The acceptance letter from the Alpha Werewolf Financial Academy that you wanted. You can study abroad. I’ll arrange everything."
It sounded like an act of kindness, but it felt more like an order.
I stared at the folder, unmoving. Though I was an orphan with strong academic skills, there were still limits to what I could reach.
Lucian knew what I wanted. As a businessman, he must have thought this was a fair trade.
Under his gaze, I finally picked up the folder and his lighter.
With the folder in my left hand, I lit the edge with the flame in my right. In seconds, it turned into ashes that drifted across his desk.
"You’re insane!" Lucian stood up, towering over me, finally dropping his calm façade and showing his anger.
"Insane? No, you haven’t seen anything yet."
I laughed softly, lifting my chin as my hand brushed across Lucian’s face, blessed by the gods.
As I leaned closer, his scent drew me in; it was like dry desert air. I hated deserts, but I liked his scent.
Lucian turned away from my touch, and I saw the disgust in his dark eyes. It was like a snake biting my heart, making my wolf whimper in pain.
"Heh." I let out a shaky laugh, then took the cigarette from his mouth and placed it between my lips.
That would be our only and final kiss.
"We’re calling off the mating ceremony. I refuse to have you as my mate." I blew out a smoke ring in his face, watching his stunned expression.
Since it could be postponed, it might as well be canceled altogether.
Chapter 2
Delia's POV
Lucian’s face turned dark, his deep eyes narrowing in disbelief as if I had slapped him instead of blowing smoke in his face.
"Cancel the mating ceremony? Delia, are you out of your mind!"
The veins on Lucian’s forehead stood out as he almost ground his words out.
"I know you hate Susanna, but she’s just sick. We grew up together since we were kids, I can’t just ignore her illness."
Lucian frowned in frustration; for a proud Alpha like him, explaining himself to others was rare.
But I didn't care.
"Is she sick, or is she pregnant?" I said with a sarcastic laugh.
Lucian’s body stiffened slightly, and he turned to me with a piercing gaze.
"What do you know? Are you investigating me?"
"Heh," I flicked the ash from my cigarette, meeting his eyes directly. "What are you so guilty about? Since you’ve already gone with her to the maternity hospital, why are you still talking to me about the mating ceremony? Lucian, do I look stupid to you?"
Lucian and I stood facing each other coldly, his eyes revealing that same calculating look, trying to figure out my true motive. From his view, calling off the engagement now would bring me nothing but loss.
But so what?
As the true blood heir of the Whitmore family, I despised lies and betrayal. Even though my heart felt shattered like a mountain collapsing, I had to hold onto my Alpha pride in front of Lucian, my last bit of dignity.
"I’ll say it again, Delia, she’s just sick. She’s not like you, she’s just an omega..."
"So what? Because she’s a weak, fragile omega, my fiancé should be with her?"
I sneered, leaning back on the sofa, looking up at Lucian across the table, cutting off his words.
"Do you remember who you bonded with?"
Lucian clenched his jaw, his gaze dark and unreadable. He looked like a negotiator facing a tough deal, but this time he had no advantage to use against me.
I turned my head and looked at the large window beside us.
The wide view reminded me of the gentle tone he had used on the phone earlier, like the first time I met him.
"You're Delia Whitmore? Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Lucian Shepherd, your future Alpha."
At that first dinner after I came home, while everyone whispered and pointed at me, only Lucian had stood before me with a polite smile.
He even announced our mateship then and there, confident that I would naturally fall for him.
Over the past two years, while I struggled to accept my new identity, Lucian had helped me a lot. And as he predicted, I fell in love with him.
Maybe from the beginning, Lucian’s kindness toward me was fake. He only wanted to maintain the engagement between our families, showing me a bit of warmth, and I foolishly believed someone truly wanted to accept me.
As the cigarette burned down to its end, the sting on my fingers snapped me back. Suddenly, I found arguing with him meaningless.
"Now that she’s back, she can stay. After all, she still owes a debt that hasn’t been repaid."
I stood up, keeping my posture composed and graceful in Lucian’s eyes, and placed my hand on the door handle.
"Don't make things difficult for her."
Lucian’s voice came from behind, low, controlled, and threatening.
Even if a knife pierced through my heart, it wouldn't hurt as much as those words.
My mate was threatening me with another woman.
The emotions I tried to suppress almost broke free, but I held back, not allowing Lucian to see the tears in my eyes.
My hand gripped the cold metal handle tightly until it almost sank into my skin.
"Make things difficult for her? That depends on whether your actions meet my expectations."
I took a deep breath, gritting my teeth, forcing my voice to stay calm and steady.
Hurry, Delia, leave this place quickly. You can’t cry here.
I heard the low growl of my wolf.
Lucian was clearly provoked by me. He gave a dry sneer, and his words came like poison.
"Don’t push it, Delia. The mating ceremony involves both families. Do you really think the Whitmore family will support your decision?"
Lucian knew my weakness better than anyone, and this was his final card.
My family wouldn't support me.
That was exactly why he dared to act this way.
I still didn’t understand why the Moon Goddess gave me such a twisted fate. I had a family, yet I grew up like an orphan. Even now, my parents cared more for Susanna than for me.
For parents, what matters more, the child they raised or the one connected by blood? The Whitmore family had clearly chosen the former.
No one knew how much I hated Susanna and envied her at the same time. Her mother swapped our lives, making my parents shower her with love, while I got nothing.
I wasn’t raised by that woman. I was thrown into an orphanage, never knowing parental warmth.
And Susanna? She was the beloved Miss Whitmore on the surface, while her real mother secretly cared for her as a servant.
Until the day my DNA test results came out. I met the Whitmore couple and their daughter at the hospital, and my instincts screamed that I had to fight for them.
I hugged them, crying, begging them to test our parentage. When the results came out, I was the only one smiling.
Lucian was right. Breaking off the engagement would make my family turn against me, and I’d have nowhere to go.
I had never had a real home, never had a true family.
Everything in front of me looked both blurred and clear as I forced my tears back.
Lucian stepped closer from behind and grabbed my wrist.
"When she gets better, I promise our mating ceremony will happen right away, okay?"
Lucian’s voice was low and smooth, full of control, the way Alphas always comforted those they believed had lost.
This was an Alpha’s version of sympathy and arrogance.
Unfortunately, there were things I would rather lose than accept.
I slowly pulled my hand away, looked up at Lucian with false gentleness, and pushed open the door.
The sound of my high heels echoed on the marble floor, each step a silent refusal.
A loud “bang” followed as the door closed behind me.
Lucian was rarely pushed this far.
The secretaries outside glanced at each other as I walked past, their whispers brushing against my ears.
"I knew it, Susanna and Lucian are the real pair."
"Yeah, Delia may have schemed before, but Susanna is Lucian’s true love."
I stopped in my tracks, thought for a moment, then walked straight toward them.
If they were going to talk about me, how could I not have a say?
The two employees discussing me immediately fell silent. I tapped on their desks, forcing them to look up and meet my eyes.
"Hello, Miss Whitmore," they stammered nervously.
"What did I steal?" I asked coldly.
The two employees paled, exchanged a glance, and lowered their heads deeply.
"Heh," I gave a short laugh and looked around the entire department.
Everyone else pretended not to notice what was happening, keeping their heads down, afraid to meet my gaze.
In Lucian’s company, it turns out I was that kind of person in their story. How ridiculous.
Chapter 3
Delia's POV
As I walked out of Lucian’s family group building, I happened to see Susanna stepping out of a luxury car.
The person opening the door for her wasn’t just a driver, but Lucian’s executive assistant, Ethan.
I watched as Ethan stood respectfully beside the car, while Susanna, as usual, linked her arm through his, got out gracefully, and handed him a few large paper bags.
"Ethan, these are the gifts I picked out. Please give them to Lucian’s employees. Thank you." Susanna spoke softly, her tone sweet and approachable.
Ethan nodded, took the bags, and smiled. "Thank you, Miss Susanna."
Suddenly, I found the whole scene amusing.
So this was her way of winning over the people around Lucian behind my back?
Did she think she could make Lucian’s staff believe she was kind and gentle just by handing out gifts like a saint?
Even though she was only an omega, she still managed to make Ethan, a Beta, treat her with such respect.
“Delia, you need to learn to use all the power around you.”
A man’s voice echoed in my memory, his misty blue eyes flashing with a smile.
I narrowed my eyes as Susanna finally noticed me standing at the entrance.
She paused, adjusted her white dress, and walked toward me with a bright smile.
"Delia."
It was said that Susanna was born an hour earlier than I, so she always called herself my older sister, putting on that fake act of sisterly affection whenever people were around.
"Delia, are you here to see Lucian? What a coincidence, I’m here to see him too. He even sent his assistant, Ethan, to pick me up. Your fiancé is such a thoughtful man."
Susanna stood in front of me, smiling brightly. She was petite, elegantly dressed, and spoke softly; anyone would think she was a gentle and graceful lady.
But I knew better. This woman was a skilled actress. Her words weren’t meant for me; they were for Ethan, standing behind her.
"Since you know Lucian is my fiancé, stay away from him." I had no intention of humoring her. I glanced at Ethan, who looked uneasy, and smirked.
"And Ethan is Lucian’s assistant, not your driver. Stop troubling him. If you’re short on money, I can lend you some, understand?"
Susanna’s smile froze for a second, but she quickly forced it back. "What are you talking about, Delia? It was Lucian who sent Ethan to pick me up."
Every word she said was to show off the special treatment Lucian gave her. No wonder she was glowing when she arrived; she was here just to show me how close they were.
Lucian, you really knew how to make me lose control. Just after I made you angry, you ran to Susanna to soothe yourself.
I clenched my fists, feeling like Lucian had once again buried me under the weight of my collapsing emotions.
Ethan shifted uncomfortably, clearly unsure how to handle the situation.
"Susanna, Ethan is from the Blackwood family. I can give him orders because I’m marrying into that family. And you, what right do you have to do this?"
Even though Lucian and Susanna were truly childhood friends, once the Blackwood family found out Susanna wasn’t a true Whitmore and was an omega, they refused her completely as a match.
That was when Lucian turned to me.
Even though Lucian could let Susanna enter his company whenever she wanted, he knew he couldn’t bring her into the family.
I lowered my head, my words making Susanna unable to bear it. She clenched her sleeves, raised her head, and said in a voice only we could hear, “Delia, don’t be too proud. As long as I’m here, you and Lucian’s mating ceremony will not happen!”
“Oh, really? Who told you my mating ceremony mate must be Lucian? There are plenty of Alphas in the world; I can take my time choosing.”
I smiled faintly. Susanna’s words were not a threat to me at all.
No matter what Lucian was thinking, an Alpha who always had other women in his heart was not worth marrying.
Susanna looked stunned. “What are you talking about?”
“If you have trouble hearing, go to the hospital and get it checked. Make sure you go to the right department this time. The obstetrics department doesn’t treat ears.”
I chuckled, feeling it was a waste of time to keep talking to her.
Since I had already decided to give up, there was no point in standing here any longer.
“Delia, are you angry? I can explain!”
Suddenly, my hand was grabbed, Susanna’s nails digging deep into my arm. She rushed in front of me, lifting her head with tears in her eyes, pretending to be pitiful.
“Delia, I really got sick. I didn’t dare contact my parents, so I had to ask Lucian for help. You know, I grew up with him since childhood. We have a good relationship.”
I almost laughed at her words. When she got sick, she went to my mate and said they had a good relationship, asking me not to misunderstand.
Was I too kind two years ago, letting her think she could act so arrogantly in front of me?
Susanna continued her performance.
“Delia, I already gave you my parents. Lucian is just my childhood friend. I won’t ruin your relationship, okay?”
Her grip on my arm tightened painfully, and I was getting annoyed.
"Let go," I warned in a low voice.
“Delia…” Susanna continued with her poor acting.
Disgusting. Without waiting for her to finish, I shook her arm off forcefully.
Susanna fell to the ground, her body hitting the floor heavily. The dull sound made me raise an eyebrow.
She fell hard.
I stood still, not reacting yet, when a roar came from behind.
"Delia!"
I turned around and saw Lucian charging toward me like an angry lion.
Ah, so the audience Susanna was waiting for had finally arrived.
I looked down at Susanna, who was wiping her tears on the ground, then glanced at Lucian and at the fountain in front of the company.
Seize the moment, Delia.
I smirked, bent down, grabbed Susanna’s hair, and dragged her roughly to the edge of the pool. Then, I pushed her head down into the water.
“Ahhh!” Susanna screamed, but her omega strength was no match for me.
"Susanna!"
Lucian’s expression turned from anger to fear.
Three, two, one.
I silently counted in my mind, then lifted Susanna’s head from the water. She coughed violently, her face turning red from lack of air.
"Help, help me!"
Before she could finish, I pushed her head back into the water again. This time, she struggled fiercely, splashing water everywhere.
If she wanted to act, I would make it look real.
Until Lucian finally rushed over, shoved me aside, and pulled Susanna out of the water.
“Delia! Are you crazy? You almost killed Susanna!”
“Is she dead?” I asked calmly, standing to the side.
“Cough! Cough! Cough!” Susanna clung to Lucian’s arms, struggling to breathe.
“Lucian, I…” Susanna gripped his arm tightly, her wet hair and tears soaking his clothes, looking completely pitiful.
“Delia! You wicked woman! How dare you hurt Susanna right in front of me!”
Lucian held the weak Susanna, glaring at me with such anger that it was almost enough to kill.
It felt like he wanted to kill me on the spot.
“Just making Susanna choke on water, and he already looked at me like that. What if I did the same to him?”
“What?”
Before Lucian could react, my fingers transformed into claws, my golden pupils widening as a deep wolf howl echoed in my ears.
I pressed my sharp claws tightly against Lucian’s neck, leaving several bloody scratches, which only excited me even more.
