Chapter 1 — Night With The Ruthless Alpha Giovanni Vinci
AVERY
Pain. That was the first thing I felt as I lazily kicked the blanket off me and woke up.
Every muscle in my body screamed in protest, making me fall back against the ridiculously soft mattress.
Wait. Soft? The Royal Warrior Academy dorms had the worst beds imaginable. This… this definitely didn't feel like it.
My eyes snapped open. I sat up again, ignoring the soreness this time. My heart nearly stopped as I looked around. “Where the heck am I?”
A crystal chandelier hung above me, its soft golden light reflecting against a ceiling far too elegant to belong to my tiny apartment. Silk curtains swayed gently in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, and the faint scent of cedarwood and sandalwood lingered in the air.
I swallowed hard. This wasn't my dorm. It wasn't inside the academy. It wasn't even Ryder’s mansion! Then where… Where the heck was I?
My eyes landed on the chair beside the bed. My academy uniform had been neatly folded.
Beside it sat a bottle of water, a box of painkillers and my phone. Someone had arranged everything.
I shut my eyes, trying to recall yesterday. It was the Moon Festival hosted by the Royal Academy. I clenched my fist, I drank too much, and then…
A chill ran down my spine. I looked down at myself. I was wearing an oversized black shirt, definitely not mine. “Oh, my moon goddess,” I exclaimed as my cheeks turned hot.
Please, don't let it be what I think it is. This had to be a mistake.
I gasped and thought harder about what happened in the moon festival.
Everything was going normal. I helped with the banquet, and was drinking. And, then, my heat had arrived, weeks earlier than it should be. My wolf had suddenly become restless. My entire body had started burning. I'd searched my handbag for my suppressants. Empty. My heat wasn't due until next month, I didn't have the pills with me. I ran…
I gasped as I recalled what happened next and I instinctively caressed my neck. He had marked my whole body with bites, and I could still smell his scent from last night.
I buried my face in my hands. “Oh, Goddess…” Please don't tell me I actually…
Before I finished my sentence, I got up to look at myself in the mirror.
My hair was a mess. I was fully disheveled. My body was covered in marks from last night. And, I carried a scent. An Alpha’s scent.
Who could it be? Thousands of questions swirled inside my mind.
A knock interrupted my thoughts. Three calm knocks. My heart thumped, and my tongue got cold.
“Awake?” A deep male voice came from outside the door. “I'll come in if you don't answer.”
I nearly jumped out of my skin. “N-No!” My voice sounded far louder than I intended. “I-I'm awake!”
I was still on guard. I wasn't in a position to see anyone right now, not in this look. And, I was still not mentally prepared to see who I mated with last night.
The silence which may have lasted for a few seconds felt an eerie silence for hours.
“I've asked someone to prepare breakfast. You can come downstairs when you're ready.”
“O-Okay!” I stuttered, holding onto the blanket, covering myself. As the footsteps slowly disappeared, I let go, and let out the breath I’d been holding.
Who… Who was that?
I changed into my academy uniform as quickly as possible before taking one last look around the bedroom. Where the heck was I?
Taking a deep breath, I opened the door. The hallway was enormous.
Portraits were hung in the hall. Portraits I’d seen before. I swallowed. These were the portraits of the previous Alphas and Lunas of the pack. Silver wolf statues stood at every corner. There were even guards. Real guards. Where the heck did I end up?
Please don't tell me where I think it is…
Trying not to draw attention, I quietly walked downstairs. Voices drifted from the living room.
“...The northern rogues have become active again.”
“...Increase the patrol around the eastern border.”
“...We'll discuss the treaty after the council meeting.”
I slowed my steps, and peeked around the corner. I froze. There were nearly ten men inside. Some wore military uniforms. Others wore expensive suits. Every single one of them carried an overwhelming aura. I gulped. They were the pack elders!
At the head of the room sat one man. He appeared tall even though he just lazily leaned on the chair with a serious look in his face, clearly bothered by the elders. His tailored black shirt showed off his broad shoulders. And his jet-black hair dropped almost to his cold silver eyes.
It was him. Alpha Giovanni Vinci. The Alpha of the Blackthrone Pack. And, it meant I… I was in the Alpha's mansion. The familiar scent hit my nose. That was his. Alpha Giovanni’s. I gasped.
I staggered, and backed away, drawing the attention of everyone inside.
Damn. I didn't want to make a sound.
He looked up, and came closer to the door. “You woke up.” My heart skipped a beat and I froze at my tracks. “Wait for the council meeting to end, I'll have breakfast with you.”
Without realizing it, I took a step back. I could feel every gaze in the room fall on me. The room instantly fell silent.
I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole. I wanted to disappear.
“I'm... I'm sorry.” I stuttered as I bowed down. “I didn't mean to interrupt.”
Alpha Giovanni went back to his table and closed the stack of documents before him. “We'll continue this meeting later. Beta Ryder will inform you of my plans.”
The meeting ended immediately. Just because I had appeared. That somehow made everything even more awkward.
The elders walked past me one by one, each giving me curious looks. None of them spoke.
Within seconds… Only the two of us remained.
He walked toward me. Slow. Calm. Unhurried. Stopping only an arm's length away.
I had heard from my brother, Ryder, Alpha Giovanni never touched a she-wolf. He hated any she-wolves who tried to approach him. He’d even killed many she-wolves. There were rumours in the pack Alpha Giovanni was incapable, some said that he was infertile, and some said he liked men. No matter what it was, approaching him was dangerous. And, I slept with my Alpha.
Was he going to kill me?
“How are you feeling?” His calm voice cut through, making my mind go blank.
I lowered my head immediately. ‘I-I'm fine.” Then, a pause. “I'm... really sorry about whatever happened last night.” I said, shutting my eyes down. “I don't remember anything.”
He studied me for a moment. Then said quietly, “I know, I've called the pack healer for you. She'll examine you after breakfast.”
I looked up. He was letting a pack healer check on me? No, fucking no, I didn't want to be found in the Alpha's mansion.
Didn't he care about his reputation? He hated she-wolves but that was it.
The breakfast was awkwardly quiet. I just wanted the time to pass soon.
Immediately after I finished, the pack healer came, and checked on me.
“She's alright. There's nothing wrong with her body. Her heat must've come earlier.” As she said it, she handed me a cream. “You should apply this.”
“Apply?” I looked at the cream.
“Where?” Damian asked. “Should I help her apply?”
She coughed. I could feel her cheeks turn red. “That area.”
My cheeks flushed, and I looked away from both, immediately.
Damian let out a cold cough. “I've got work left. The Beta will take you back.” As he said it, he hurried out. Though he looked composed, somehow, I could feel his embarrassment.
I let out a loud sigh. I survived. I had met Alpha Giovanni a few times. It was because of Ryder. When he was out for work, he had handed me some work as someone taking his place temporarily. But that was it. I had no other connections to him other than reporting sometimes to him. But I had slept with them.
I frowned as I massaged the bridge of my nose.
“What's up?” Ryder smirked. “Alpha asked me to drop you off at the academy.”
I sighed, and let out a snort. “Why did you not take me back to home or the form yesterday?”
He shook his head. “I wanted to, but you clung to Alpha Giovanni, and wouldn't let go. That's why we had to bring you here.” He laughed. “Do you know the mess you've made yesterday? You disappeared in the middle of the festival. The guards went to search you, but they found out you were clinging to Alpha Giovanni. They thought you're dead for sure, but Alpha Giovanni brought you back. You kept kissing him on the way.”
My cheeks flushed with embarrassment. I hoped the world would rather swallow me.
Ryder dropped me a few blocks away from the academy. My identity as the Beta's sister was a secret. And, coming with Ryder would definitely catch attention, which I didn't want. This was my last year, and I wanted it to go smoothly.
Before entering the academy, I secretly went to the pharmacy. I couldn't repeat last night’s mistake. As I took the heat suppressants, I bought a birth pill, and swallowed it. I didn't kno
w if he used protection or not, and there's a 99% chance of getting pregnant if someone mated during the heat. I didn't want to get pregnant.
Chapter 2 — My Cheating Mate
AVERY
“I’ll never see him again.” I promised as I entered the academy. I didn't know what happened. In any case, it was a mistake.
I walked slowly toward my locker, glancing around to make sure no one had just seen me coming from the pharmacy store before the academy gate, because if they had, they’d be wondering.
As I took a few books from my locker and put my bag inside, Chloe, my best friend, came up to me.
Somehow, I couldn’t act normally, but I had to.
“Hey, Avery, you look different today,” she greeted me.
She also analyzed me for a moment and it made me uncomfortable. Maybe it was because I didn’t want her to know something I tried to hide.
“Chloe, it’s still early in the morning, of course I look different, I’m sleepy. I couldn’t sleep properly,” I replied, trying to sound casual.
“Really? But you smell different. Your scent is different.”
She sniffed around, trying to catch my scent, and it made my blood boil, causing me to swallow hard.
I tried to act normal, hoping Chloe wouldn’t recognize the scent.
“Oh, come on, Chloe,” I nudged her gently to get her to back off, “don’t butt in, okay? I just haven’t showered yet. I just washed my face and brushed my teeth. I have no time for it.”
“I just care about you, Avery. I’m your best friend, I can tell when you’re even a little different.”
I froze for a moment, but it didn’t take me long to react. It was just… I had to lie a little more so that later, whatever Chloe asked me again, I could handle it easily.
“Yeah, whatever you say. Let’s get into class,” I said.
That morning during assembly, as I entered the classroom, I heard everyone whispering about something.
“Hey, someone spent the night at Alpha Giovanni’s residence!”
Hearing that, my heart started racing. I felt like I wanted to run out of the classroom before class even started.
How did that rumor spread so fast? Did they know who that “someone” was? That it was actually me?
“Really? Do you know who she was?” the other asked.
Somehow, rather than running away from class, I wanted to find out for myself.
“No. No one knows who she was. But I bet she’s special, that’s why she got to spend the night with Alpha Giovanni.”
“I think Alpha tried to hide her identity. Maybe he isn’t ready to expose his relationship with this woman.”
I rolled my eyes. They were too over-predicting something that wasn’t the truth.
At that moment, I felt a bit relieved, but deep down I was dying inside because it had just happened last night, and I couldn’t calm down at all.
At the same time, I was startled by my phone ringing.
It was my mate, Alpha Tristan.
I didn’t answer his call because of what he’d done behind my back.
He was my fated mate, but he showed me no compassion at all by cheating on me. It hurt me, and he thought I had no idea.
And not only that, he also got another she-wolf pregnant, yet he acted as if nothing had happened. What a bastard mate!
Again, I knew it all. I just acted like a normal mate because I might forgive all his bad behavior, but it was just a facade.
Because the truth was, I planned to take revenge on him, that’s why I hadn’t rejected him yet.
I turned my phone into silent mode so I wouldn’t get bothered by him as the class began.
“Good morning, Class!” The Headmaster greeted us as she walked in.
We all paid attention because usually, when the principal walks into the classroom, it means she’s about to make an announcement.
“Well, today I’d like to introduce our temporary Combat Strategy Lecturer to you all.”
All eyes turned toward the door and…
“Please welcome Alpha Giovanni Vinci!”
My eyes widened in surprise, I even swallowed so hard I almost choked, and my heart was pounding so fast it felt like it was about to leap out of my chest.
My stomach, which had been fine just a moment ago, felt different, a wild, uncontrollable flutter as the man walked in with a steady, confident stride.
And what sent shivers down my spine even more was that our eyes met. It was as if he didn’t even need to look for where I was sitting, he found me right away.
Instinctively, I glanced at Ryder, who immediately shot me a slightly mocking look.
Damn it.
Once class started, I couldn’t focus, and luckily I didn’t have to say a word. I just paid attention like any other student, even though my mind was a jumble of thoughts about last night’s events involving the man teaching in front of me.
However, his class seemed to drag on forever since I couldn’t think clearly.
Everyone was paying such close attention to him. I didn’t know if they were just being polite or if it was because this Alpha was known for his gruff demeanor.
And to be honest, I myself felt I couldn’t keep looking at him for too long because what was on my mind wasn’t what he was teaching in class, but what he and I had done last night.
When class finally ended, I was relieved. Not only that, but before he left, he glanced at me briefly and then walked out. But before it, I saw him talking with Ryder for a second.
Somehow, I felt my energy had drained since then.
I packed up my book and saw that Ryder was about to leave for an emergency border mission.
Then, he suddenly approached me.
“Avery, Alpha Giovanni wants to see you in person.”
“Huh? For what?” I asked nervously.
“I don’t know. But be careful, he’s hot-tempered. Just don’t make him angry.”
I knew that, I’d heard it too. However, during the lecture, I could tell he seemed angry for no reason.
But whatever it was, I had to prepare for the worst before I came to see him as he commanded.
Chapter 3 — Be My Mate
AVERY
“Come in.” The deep voice from behind the office door made my heart pound even harder.
I took a slow breath before pushing the door open.
The room was spacious, lined with towering bookshelves filled with strategy manuals and ancient records of werewolf warfare. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows behind the desk, where Alpha Giovanni sat reviewing several documents.
He didn't look up immediately while I stood awkwardly near the entrance.
“You... wanted to see me, Alpha?”
A few more seconds passed before he finally lifted his gaze. Those golden eyes landed on me. Sharp and unreadable, yet dangerous. “Close the door.”
“Yes.” I obeyed without another word.
The click of the door closing suddenly made the office feel much smaller. He leaned back in his chair, studying me in silence. The silence stretched so long that my palms began to sweat.
This was it. He was going to lecture me about that night. I'm pretty sure of it. Maybe even threaten me. Perhaps he regretted everything that had happened last night.
Honestly… I regretted it too. “I…” I decided to speak first. “If this is about last night—”
“Are you feeling better?”
I blinked. “What?”
“Your condition,” his expression remained unchanged. He folded his hands on top of the desk. “Are you feeling better?” he asked again.
For several seconds, my brain simply refused to function. That… Wasn't the question I expected.
“I... yes,” I nodded awkwardly. “I'm fine.”
He continued watching me as though trying to determine whether I was lying.
Unable to bear his stare, I hurriedly continued. “About last night…” My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag. “I apologise. Please forgive me. I promise, I'll never utter a single word to someone else.” Then the room turned silent. Only our breath could be heard. I spoke again. “It was a mistake, Alpha. I swear. I was in heat, and you happened to be there.” I forced myself to meet his eyes. “It shouldn't have happened.” His gaze didn't waver. I swallowed, and repeated, “I won't tell anyone. Rest assured, there'll be no rumours.”
Still… Nothing. The longer he stayed quiet, the more nervous I became. Did I say something wrong?
Finally… He stood. Every instinct inside me screamed to step backward as he walked around the desk.
His presence alone was overwhelming. He then stopped only an arm's length away. Then he spoke. “Be my mate.”
I stared blankly at him, processing his words. “I'm sorry…” I laughed nervously. “I think I misheard you.”
“You didn't,” his voice remained calm. “Be my mate.”
The room suddenly felt too quiet. I searched his face, hoping to find some trace of a joke. There wasn't any.
“I…” I blinked several times. “You can't be serious.”
“I am serious.”
“No, you're joking,” I shook my head.
“I don't joke.”
Of course he didn't. This was Alpha Giovanni Vinci. The man famous for frightening rogues, killing them mercilessly, and even overthrowing Alphas. He wasn't exactly known for his sense of humor.
I let out an awkward laugh. “This... isn't funny.”
“It wasn't meant to be.”
I rubbed my forehead. Maybe I was still exhausted or this was some strange dream.
“You barely know me.”
“I know enough. You're Avery. Ryder's sister. The Beta’s sister, and you're in your last year.”
“No, you don't. That's… That's just some information.”
“And you slept with me.”
“You don't have to remind me,” heat immediately rushed to my face.
“I have to,” He looked directly into my eyes. “I value my purity.”
My lips parted. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
For the second time today… I wondered whether my hearing had suddenly become defective.
He continued speaking as if discussing academy regulations.
“I take responsibility too.”
I almost choked on my own breath. “Responsibility?”
“Yes.”
“I…” I pointed at myself. “Me?”
"You."
I stared at him for several long seconds before finally managing to speak. “Alpha, You don't love me.”
“I don’t need to love you.”
“You're not even my mate.”
“Yes, I’m not.”
“You don't know anything about me.”
“That's not true.”
I rolled my eyes. “Why are you asking me to become your mate? We don't need to be mates. It was just a one time thing, and we can treat it like adults.”
He looked away briefly, almost as though organizing his thoughts. “When discover a woman spent the night in my residence, rumors will spread.”
I frowned. “They already have.”
“Yes, and those rumours need to be silenced. Also, what if you get pregnant? There's a high chance of getting pregnant if mated during the heat.”
The words struck me. Pregnant? I instinctively placed a hand against my stomach. No. Surely not. I shook my head. “Alpha, don't worry. I've already taken a birth control pill. There's no baby.”
I heaved a sigh. “Please don't bring this up. This isn't your responsibility. You didn't force me, and it's just adult affairs.” I bit my lips, pausing for a moment before finally letting out, “Besides, I already have a mate.”
His expression changed. It was subtle. Just a slight tightening of his jaw. A faint narrowing of his eyes. But I noticed it. He hadn't expected that answer but he also didn’t reply to it.
Instead he picked up a folder before speaking without looking at me. “You'll be my assistant for the days I’m in the academy as a lecturer,” he said all of a sudden.
“What? But—”
“I’ve already let the head know about this. And, the mate thing, don’t reject too fast,” he asked, cutting my words. “Take time to think about it.”
I had no words. I couldn't refute. Being his assistant was a good position, that meant I could attend exclusive events. But I didn't want it.
The she-wolves would kill me if they found out I became his assistant. Alpha Giovanni is popular among them, and even if they didn't find out I slept with him, there's a huge probability I'll still be killed.
I heaved a sigh. And I had to deal with the others too. Being his assistant was highly valuable, and I'd successfully become their target.
Damn you, Alpha Giovanni!
