Chapter 1
It was raining heavily when I got off work, but I had no time to wait for the rain to stop. I had to go back in time, or there would be severe punishment waiting for me. Last time I was less than five minutes late, and I was beaten so badly that I nearly couldn't lie down on the bed for a week. I didn't want to experience it again.
When I got home, my clothes were soaked. But I didn't go upstairs to change my clothes. Instead, I walked into the living room directly. Gerardo, Kaylie, and Frida were sitting in the living room.
Gerardo was my uncle, my father's younger brother. After my father died, he became the Alpha of Oneal. Kaylie was his wife, and Frida was their younger daughter.
Seeing me come in, Kaylie immediately questioned me with dissatisfaction, "Where have you been? Don't you know the time?"
I lowered my head. "Sorry. It's raining..."
"Stop finding excuses," Frida interrupted me. "And don't show that face again, like you are wronged. I'm really tired of it."
I stopped saying anything. Frida never liked me. No matter what I said or did, she just didn't like me. And so did Kaylie. If it had been a few years ago, I would have explained that I really didn't intend to. But that would irritate them, and eventually, Gerardo would get mad and beat me. And there was still punishment waiting for me after I got beaten.
So, for years, I had learned not to retort or explain. Silence was the best way to get me out of such circumstances. They would have let me go after the reprimand if I had been lucky.
It seemed that I was lucky this time. They didn't want to keep me there long.
"Go wash the dishes. Since you are late home, you don't deserve to have dinner." Kaylie didn't continue but sent me to the kitchen.
I thanked her and immediately ran into the kitchen. Staying in the living room made me unable to breathe. I didn't have time to think of why Kaylie had been so kind and let me go easily because there were a lot of dishes waiting for me to wash.
They didn't intend to wait for me for dinner at all. They knew when I got off work. Even if I did my best to rush home after work, I could never catch up with the dinner. But every time, they said it was because I hung around after work that I didn't have dinner. I could only eat some bread after I finished all the cleaning.
My clothes were still wet, and I shivered. I was hungry, tired, and cold. I was exhausted, but I knew I could not be able to take a warm bath until I finished all the work.
I began to sing. Every time I felt bad or exhausted, I sang. Singing made me feel good. It pumped me up so that I could hang in there. My mother used to say my voice was kissed by Moon Goddess. She taught me a lot of songs. Her voice was beautiful too, and we always sang together. But after she died, Gerardo and Kaylie didn't like my singing. I got beaten every time they heard me sing. So I rarely sang. But I was too tired to hold on. I couldn't help but sing a song my mother had taught me before. It gave me strength.
"I knew it. You pretend to be innocent, but this is how you hook up others."
I was frightened and turned around. Rangel stood next to the door, staring at me with his wretched smile. He sized me up and down.
I suddenly realized that my t-shirt was semi-transparent because of the rain and stuck on my body. I felt uncomfortable under his gaze.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to disturb you." I wished Rangel could leave as soon as possible.
But he didn't intend to leave. Instead, he walked toward me.
"I didn't realize you were a big girl now." Rangel was getting closer and closer.
I was scared and didn't know what to do. He was the last one I wanted to meet in the house. He always looked at me with a strange expression, like he was looking at his prey. I got out to work early in the morning and came back late, trying to dodge him. Just now, I didn't see him in the living room. I thought he was out and was relieved. But I didn't expect him to come to the kitchen.
"Would you please excuse me? I still have a lot of work to do." I wanted to step backward, but the sink prevented me.
"Why are you so scared? You will like it." Rangel suddenly reached out his hands and pulled me toward him. He grabbed my wrist so that I couldn't get away. He lowered his head and approached the curl of my neck. I could feel his breath spray on my skin.
My whole body tightened. I used all my strength to try to push him away but failed. He was very strong.
"What are you doing?" It was Frida. I swore that I had never been so glad to see her.
"Mom told you to stay away from her, Rangel. She's a slut." Frida was furious.
Rangel released me reluctantly and turned to Frida with an I-don't-care expression. "Why are you here?" He was annoyed.
"Dad wants Cora to his study."
"Fuck! Now?"
"Yes. Dad said it was urgent."
"You are lucky today." Rangel gave me a ferocious stare and walked out of the kitchen.
I let out a sigh of relief. I had no idea why Gerardo wanted to see me. It was abnormal for him to ask me to go to his study after dinner. But I was still glad that I could get rid of Rangel.
"Mom is right. You are a slut. But you won't be able to seduce anyone soon." Frida glanced at me with disgust and turned around to leave.
I didn't understand what she meant, but I didn't ask. I knew she would not tell me anyway. I just followed her to Gerardo's study.
Chapter 2
On the way to the study, I tried to figure out why Gerardo wanted to see me. Was it because I came back late? If so, he should have beaten me in the sitting room. He didn't seem to be very angry at that time. I had no clue. Frida and I arrived at the study. She knocked on the door and then opened the door.
Kaylie was also in the study, standing next to the desk, while Gerardo was sitting behind the desk. Seeing me, Kaylie released a smile. "Cora, come in and take a seat." I had a bad feeling. Every time Kaylie smiled at me, something bad would happen to me.
I walked into the study, but I didn't sit down. I knew that Kaylie didn't really mean it. So I just stood in front of the desk and kept silent.
Gerardo cleared his throat. "Cora, you are a grown-up now. It’s time to let you know about the situation of the pack.”
I was confused. He never told me anything about the pack's business. Why did he suddenly want to tell me?
“The economy is not good, and our business is affected too.”
Actually, I didn’t know. But I did hear Gerardo and Kaylie had more fights recently.
“The pack is now experiencing a great financial crisis. It concerns the whole pack.”
I stared at Gerardo and didn’t say anything.
Seeing me have no response, Kaylie added, “Cora, don’t you care about the pack?”
Of course I cared. But I just thought that Gerardo meant more than that. But since she said so, I had to say something.
“I do care,” I answered.
“Good. Do you know how much we have spent raising you? Now it’s time for you to contribute to the pack.”
They hadn't spent any money on me at all! Since my parents died, they forced me to work and called that practice to me. They took away all the money I earned. I also had to do the housework when I didn't go to work.
But what came out of my mouth was, "I appreciate it. I’ll work hard to pay back the money."
Gerardo seemed to be satisfied hearing it. "It's good that you know to appreciate it. But it’s a lot of money. You can’t pay back even if you work for twenty years.”
He stopped for a second and continued, “But now there’s an opportunity to pay back all the debt.”
Gerardo stood up, walked around the desk, and stood in front of me.
I had to force myself not to standstill and lowered my head, not daring to look at his face.
“You know the Alpha of Mercado, right? He wants you.”
“What?” I suddenly raised my head and looked at Gerardo with my eyes widened. What did he mean the Alpha of Mercado wanted me? Did he refer to the ruler of the most powerful pack of Redstone? It was said that he had killed many people to become the ruler of the pack, including his father. No one dared to be against him. He would directly kill those who didn't listen to him and showered with their blood under the full moon. Even his wolf was said to be a monster with red eyes. It would stare at its prey and tear them into pieces.
I suddenly shivered.
“Don’t be shy, Cora,” Kaylie chunked, “you’re a big girl. And you’re pretty. Many girls would die for such an opportunity.”
“Then why don’t you ask Frida to do it,” I said in a cold voice.
Gerardo slapped me on the face. My cheek felt like burning, and my head felt dizzy. I could barely stand.
“Don’t take yourself seriously. The Alpha of Mercado just wants a breeder. You should be glad that your pretty face still has some use.” Kaylie’s tone was full of disdain.
I looked at her in disbelief. Was she still the aunt who used to hold me in her arms and call me sweetheart? When I learned that my parents had died, I was freaked out and completely didn't know what to do. My world was ruined, and I didn't know how to live by myself. But Kaylie and Gerardo adopted me. They comforted me and promised they would look after me and forever give me a happy life.
But their promise didn't last long. Gerardo blamed the economy and others for his failure in investment. Sometimes, even just a cup of coffee would irritate him, and he smashed everything in the study. And because of the loss in investment, Gerardo couldn't afford Kaylie's luxurious life as before. Kaylie was dissatisfied with it. Their quarries became more and more frequent. And all their anger finally came to me. They thought that I brought bad luck to them. I was scared at that time and could only shrink at the corner and cry. I began to undertake all the housework to prove that I was useful. I believed that it was my fault that they had quarries. I hoped my hard work could make them forgive me and become happy again. But I was wrong. They scolded me and beat me more and more fiercely. Rangel and Frida also joined them in humiliating me and asked me to do things for them as a maid.
“You can’t do this to me. I won’t be anyone’s breeder,” I cried out.
"I’m not asking your opinion!" Gerardo roared.
"If my parents were still alive..." Before I could finish, Gerardo grabbed my throat and raised me into the air. "Don't you dare to say that!" he roared.
He threw me at the wall. My back hit the wall, and the pain almost made me pass out.
I missed my parents so much. My father, the Alpha of our pack, would never allow others to do this to me. He always said that I was his pride and treasure. When he was the Alpha, my life was peaceful, and everyone was happy and full of smiles. But after he died, everything changed.
I stood up and rushed out of the study. My mind was black, the last thing I heard was Kaylie saying, "Don’t be angry. We still need her face. They will be here anytime."
Chapter 3
I ran into my room and fell on my bed. Tears couldn’t help running down my cheeks.
“To be a breeder. How could they do this to me!” I wanted to yell, but I knew that no one would listen to me.
I was so desperate that I curled up, put my arms around my legs, and trembled. I wished that my parents were still alive. Then I could rush into my mother’s arms and cry out without caring what others thought. No. If my mother were still alive, she would never let such a thing happen.
The necklace had an oval white opal pendant. It was my mother's gift to me for my come-of-age ceremony. She said that when I grew up, I could wear this necklace to meet my mate, and my mate would be astonished and fall in love with me at first glance.
A few years ago, Gerardo wanted to sell it for money. I begged him to let me keep it even if I knew that would irritate him. That was the only thing I had from my dear mother.
As the daughter of an Alpha, I was supposed to be respected, treasured, and loved. My mate might be another Alpha, and he would claim that I was his Luna. My father would proudly announce that his daughter was born to be a queen.
But, here, I had the lowest status. No one cared about me.
A series of urgent knocks on the door brought me back to reality.
"Pack your things. They are coming." Frida stood next to the door.
“Come on. Don’t make things hard.” She was impatient.
I slowly stood up.
“Take a shower and get dressed.”
My head was a mess. I couldn’t think of anything but did as Frida said.
I tottered into the bathroom. When I felt the hot water on my body, I gradually stopped trembling.
"Do you have any idea how lucky you are? I heard he is wealthy and powerful. His pack is much larger than ours," Frida said outside the bathroom. I could hear her rooting around my drawers and wardrobe.
"He is also the ruthless Alpha and kills people randomly if they can't make him satisfied." I finished the shower and walked out of the bathroom.
Frida turned around and looked at me with contempt. "You never know to be appreciative." Then, she pointed to the bed. "Dress this. Mom specifically prepared for you."
It was a white strapless dress. Kaylie actually spent money to buy a dress for me. It seemed that she really wanted to sell me to the Alpha of Mercado. She wanted the buyer to believe that I was worth the money they paid.
I put on the dress. "Look at you! What a lovely girl!" Frida’s voice was ironic.
I looked at the table. There lay a necklace. That was why she had rotted my things. She had been looking for it.
I looked at myself in the mirror. The white strapless design revealed my swan neck and fair skin, and the elegant bodice showed my body perfectly. My copper hair was shiny like silk, lying down to my waist. And the airy chiffon skirt was just long enough to show my slim shins.
But then, I saw the bruises on my skin. My eyes were red because of crying. In fact, I looked terrible. I was just a poor girl waiting to be picked up by the buyer. Tears welled up in my eyes again.
"Stop being pathetic." Frida interrupted my thoughts. "I'm really sick of you being like this. Like you are the most pitiful girl in the world."
I didn't say anything but started to collect my things. I only had several T-shirts, two pairs of jeans, and some underwear. I stuck them into a bag.
Frida watched me collect my things, in case I took something that she thought didn't belong to me.
"You’re going to be a mistress of a wealthy pack. Lucky you." Rangel showed up nowhere and leaned against the door frame.
"Okay. We are done. Let's go." Frida urged me.
But Rangel's body occupied almost all the space of the door, and I couldn't get out without touching him. He smiled at me wryly.
I braced myself and squeezed out of the door at the fastest speed I could. When I got out of the room, I began to run. Rangel seemed to be annoyed. He shouted behind me, "Why are you running? Are you so desperate to meet your new master?"
He also sped up and grabbed my arm. I tried to get rid of him but failed. He grabbed me so hard.
I saw his eyes widen. I knew I pissed him off again.
"Rangel, please let me go." I tried my best to hold my fear and begged him.
"Don't you dare to dodge me!" he roared in a low voice and raised his left hand.
I closed my eyes and shrank, waiting for his fist to fall on me.
It didn't come as I expected. I opened my eyes and saw Rangel slowly put down his left hand. But he still grabbed my arm with his right hand.
I suddenly realized something and followed his line of sight to look downstairs.
Gerardo and Kaylie were standing downstairs. There was also a man in a black suit I hadn't seen before. The man was very tall. I instinctively clutched my chest. Two men were standing a little distance behind him in the shadow. It was too dark to see their faces.
"Cora, come here." Kaylie waved her hand to me.
"Mr. Beasley, isn't she beautiful? She has been preparing for your arrival," she smiled flatteringly at the man.
But the Beta ignored her. His eyes were still focused on me.
"Do as she said," he ordered. His voice wasn't loud, but it was enough for Rangel to hear.
Rangel sneered. He suddenly put forth the strength of his right hand and swung. I lost my balance and screamed.
When I came back to my senses, I found myself in the Beta's arms. He caught me.
He gently helped me to stand up. After he made sure I didn't get hurt and could stand by myself, he withdrew his hands immediately.
"Thank you..." I was flushed and said in a low voice.
"You're welcome, Miss Cora. I'm Sean," the Beta smiled at me. His smile was so gentle. Didn't know why I was not as frightened as just now.
"Why are there bruises on her?" Sean asked. His voice was deep.
"It was because of the high heels. You fell down the stairs earlier today. Didn't you, Cora?" Kaylie stared at me as she said.
"Yes. I fell down the stairs. I'm sorry..." It was a terrible lie.
"Really?" Sean seemed not to believe it.
"Why did you ask so many questions? She's perfectly fine and complete," Rangel suddenly said in an arrogant tone.
