Chapter 1 — The Sound That Shattered Her Heart
Seraphina Pov
The tiny blue sweater slipped through my fingers for the third time. I smiled anyway. Pregnancy had turned me into the clumsiest she-wolf in the Moonstone Pack, but I didn't mind. My daughter kicked happily beneath my palm as though she was laughing at me. "Easy there, little one," I whispered, rubbing my swollen belly. "Daddy is going to love this."
The sweater wasn't perfect. One sleeve was slightly longer than the other, and I had accidentally stitched one of the tiny buttons upside down. Kael would probably tease me about it. Then he'd kiss my forehead, tell me it was beautiful anyway, and insist our daughter would wear it first. That was the kind of man I had fallen in love with. Or at least... the man I believed still existed.
A knock sounded on my bedroom door. "Come in." The maid stepped inside and lowered her head respectfully. "Luna Seraphina." I smiled despite the title. I wasn't officially Kael's Luna yet, but everyone in the pack already treated me like one. "Yes?" "The Alpha asked that no one disturb him. He has an important meeting in the west wing."
I frowned. "A meeting this late?" The maid nodded. "Yes." "Did he say who it was with?" She hesitated just long enough for me to notice. "I'm... not sure." I thanked her, and she hurried away.
For some reason, a strange uneasiness settled in my chest. Kael had been distant these past few weeks. Always busy. Always distracted. Always leaving before sunrise and returning long after dark. Whenever I asked if something was wrong, he'd smile, kiss my forehead, and tell me I was overthinking because of pregnancy hormones. Maybe he was right. Running a pack wasn't easy. Especially with a baby on the way.
I glanced at the wrapped sweater lying on the bed. Maybe I should surprise him. Just for a few minutes. Seeing his face light up would make today perfect. Holding the small package against my chest, I walked out of my room.
The Alpha Mansion was unusually quiet. Most of the servants had already retired for the night. Moonlight spilled through the tall windows, painting silver patterns across the polished floor. As I made my way toward Kael's office in the west wing, my wolf stirred uneasily.
Something feels wrong.
I frowned. "What is it, Luna?" She didn't answer. Her silence only made the feeling worse.
When I reached the corridor leading to Kael's office, I slowed. The doors were closed. No voices. No discussion. No council meeting. Only... a muffled sound. A woman's breathless laugh.
I froze. Then came a deep, familiar chuckle. Kael. My heart skipped. No. I must have heard wrong. I forced myself to smile. Maybe one of the council members had brought his wife. Maybe—
A low moan echoed through the room. Followed by another. Then Celeste's unmistakable voice,”Aaaaaa alpha harder yessss fasterrr”She moaned.
My fingers went numb. The tiny sweater slipped from my grasp and landed soundlessly on the floor. Celeste? No... Not Celeste. Not my best friend. Not the woman who had held my hand through morning sickness. Not the woman who called herself my sister.
I took one shaky step toward the door. Another. My legs felt strangely weak. The voices became clearer. "You shouldn't keep coming here," Celeste whispered between soft laughs. "And why not?" Kael replied.
"Because your pregnant luna could catch us." He laughed. Actually laughed. "Seraphina can barely climb the stairs without getting tired. She's probably asleep by now."
The words struck harder than a slap. Tears burned behind my eyes. Still... Still I couldn't believe it. I had to see. Maybe there was another explanation. Maybe—
My trembling hand touched the golden handle. The door wasn't locked. It opened with the slightest push.
Time stopped.
Kael stood with his shirt half open. Celeste sat on the edge of his desk, her dress gathered around her waist as his hands rested possessively on her hips. Her lipstick stained his mouth. His mark bloomed bright on her neck. The room smelled of sweat... desire... and betrayal.
Neither of them noticed me at first. My world shattered in complete silence. The man I had loved for three years. The man whose child I carried. The woman I trusted more than anyone. Together.
My knees nearly gave out. A broken gasp escaped my lips.
Kael's head snapped toward the door. His face drained of color. "Seraphina..."
Celeste didn't even look ashamed. Instead, she smiled. A slow... Cruel... Victorious smile. "I guess," she said softly, "she finally knows."
I stared at them. Waiting. Praying. Begging for Kael to tell me this wasn't real. That I was dreaming. That there was some horrible misunderstanding.
Instead... He sighed. As though I had become an inconvenience. "It's not what you think."
The words were so ridiculous that I almost laughed. I looked at the lipstick on his mouth. At Celeste's tangled hair. At the bite marks on her shoulder. Then back at him. "You expect me to believe that?"
Silence very heavy and uncomfortable
Then Celeste slowly climbed off the desk. She smoothed her dress before placing a possessive hand over her stomach. Her smile widened. "Oh... maybe I should tell her the rest."
My heart pounded. "The rest?" She tilted her head. "I'm pregnant too."
The world tilted beneath my feet. "No..." "Oh, yes." She laughed softly. "I've been carrying Kael's baby for almost three months."
I looked at Kael desperately to deny it. Please. He lowered his eyes. He couldn't even look at me. That was all the answer I needed.
A sharp pain twisted through my lower abdomen. I flinched. Another pain followed. Stronger,my breath caught. Nooo not now. Please not now.
Warm liquid suddenly ran down my legs. Celeste's eyes widened. Kael stared at the floor beneath me. The pool of clear fluid spread across the polished wood. His face turned white. "Seraphina..."
I clutched my stomach as another agonizing contraction ripped through my body. My baby's first cry into the world was coming.
Andit was happening at the exact moment my own heart had been torn apart.
Chapter 2 — Giving Birth Alone
Seraphina Pov
Pain. It came in crushing waves, stealing every breath from my lungs. I doubled over, one hand gripping the doorframe while the other cradled my swollen belly. "My baby..." I whispered, gasping. "Please... not now..."
Another contraction hit, stronger than the last. I cried out, my knees buckling beneath me. Kael was beside me in an instant. "Seraphina!" His hand reached for me.
I jerked away as though his touch burned. "Don't touch me!" His jaw tightened. "You need to get to the pack hospital."
I laughed bitterly through my tears. "Now you remember I'm carrying your child?" His face darkened with guilt, but before he could answer, another scream tore from my throat.
Everything became a blur. Servants rushed into the hallway. Guards shouted orders. Someone called for the healer. Someone else brought a wheelchair. Through it all, Celeste stood near the office door with one hand resting protectively on her stomach. There wasn't an ounce of guilt in her eyes. Only satisfaction. She had won. And she knew it.
---
The delivery room smelled of herbs and fresh linen. Bright lights blurred above me as another contraction ripped through my body. "Heads up!" the healer barked. "Push, Luna!"
"I'm not..." I cried, squeezing the sheets until my knuckles turned white. "I'm not his Luna..." The room fell silent for a heartbeat. The healer exchanged an awkward glance with the nurses but quickly returned to work. "Push!"
Hours passed. Or maybe minutes. I couldn't tell anymore. Pain had swallowed time. I screamed until my throat felt raw. I begged the Moon Goddess to make it stop. I begged my baby to hold on.
But the one person I wanted beside me... Wasn't there.
Every time the door opened, my heart leaped. Only to sink again. It was never Kael. Not once.
"He still hasn't come?" I asked weakly. One of the nurses lowered her head. "The Alpha... is occupied."
Occupied. The word sliced deeper than any blade. Occupied. While I fought to bring our daughter into the world... He was occupied. Fresh tears rolled down my cheeks.
"One more push!" the healer shouted. "You can do this!" Summoning every ounce of strength I had left, I pushed.
A sharp cry echoed through the room. Then... A tiny, beautiful wail. The sound froze the world.
The healer smiled. "It's a girl."
My daughter. My precious little girl.
They placed the tiny bundle against my chest. She was so small. Soft black curls covered her little head. Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine with surprising strength. The moment our eyes met, everything else faded away. The betrayal. The heartbreak. The pain. Nothing mattered anymore.
"My beautiful girl," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "I'm your mommy." She yawned, and I laughed through my tears. "You look just like me."
"No."
A familiar voice came from the doorway.
"She has my eyes."
I looked up. Kael. He stood there wearing fresh clothes. His hair was neatly combed. There wasn't a trace of panic on his face. If anything, he looked... composed. As though he hadn't shattered my life only hours ago.
He slowly approached the bed. "Can I hold her?" I looked down at my daughter. Then back at him. For a long moment, I wanted to say no. But she deserved a father. Even if he didn't deserve her. Without speaking, I handed her over.
Kael cradled the baby awkwardly before a genuine smile spread across his face. "She's beautiful." He brushed one finger over her tiny cheek. "Our daughter."
For just a second... He looked like the man I used to know.
Then the illusion disappeared. A perfume I recognized drifted into the room. Sweet jasmine. Celeste's favorite. The scent clung to Kael's clothes. My stomach twisted. He hadn't changed after leaving her. He had come straight here.
I looked away before he could see the fresh tears gathering in my eyes.
"What should we name her?" he asked quietly.
Hope. The name had lived in my heart since the day I learned I was pregnant. Because she had given me hope. Hope that love could conquer anything. Hope that we could become a family. Hope that tomorrow would always be brighter.
"Hope," I whispered.
Kael smiled. "Hope." He looked down at the baby. "It's a beautiful name."
For a brief moment, I allowed myself to believe that maybe... just maybe... things could still be fixed. Maybe our daughter would change him. Maybe he would remember the family we had dreamed of. Maybe—
His phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen. The smile on his face softened. Not for me. For whoever had sent the message. Without another word, he handed Hope back to me.
"I have something I need to take care of."
I stared at him in disbelief. "You just got here."
"I won't be long."
"You've been gone the entire time!"
His expression hardened. "This is important."
I let out a hollow laugh. "More important than your daughter?"
Silence,he didn't answer because he couldn't or maybe because he didn't want to.
He simply turned and walked toward the door.
"Kael."
He stopped but didn't look back.
"Is it her?"
Another long silence.
Then he walked away and the door clicked shut behind him.
I held Hope close against my chest, rocking her gently as tears streamed down my face, outside the slightly opened door, two young nurses whispered, believing I couldn't hear them.
"I saw Alpha Kael heading toward the east wing."
"The guest suites?"
"Yes."
"I heard Lady Celeste is staying there."
"Oh..."
Neither of them said another word. They didn't have to.
I already knew where he was going. Not to a council meeting. Not to pack business. Not to his mate. Not even to the daughter who had just entered the world.
He was going back... To the woman carrying his other child.
I lowered my face and kissed Hope's tiny forehead. "I promise you," I whispered through my tears, "even if the whole world abandons us... your mommy never will."
Outside, thunder rumbled across the nig
ht sky. Inside, I held my daughter a little tighter, unaware that the worst nightmare of my life had only just begun.
Chapter 3 — The Woman He Choose
Seraphina Pov
The first week after giving birth passed in silence. Not because the Alpha Mansion was peaceful. Because I had stopped expecting anything from Kael.
He visited Hope once. Just once. He stayed for less than five minutes, kissed her forehead, and left after receiving another message. I didn't ask who it was from. I already knew.
Hope slept peacefully in the cradle beside my bed while I folded her tiny clothes. My body still ached from childbirth. The healer had warned me not to do any work for another month, but resting was impossible. Not when my heart refused to.
A knock came at the door. Before I could answer, it swung open. Evelyn Blackwood, Kael's mother, walked in with two maids following behind her.
Her sharp eyes swept across the room. "What a mess." The maids immediately lowered their heads.
"I'm sorry," I said softly. "I was just putting Hope's clothes away."
"You call that an excuse?" She walked to the cradle and looked down at my sleeping daughter. For a moment, I thought I saw warmth in her eyes. Then it vanished.
"This child has your face."
I frowned. "I don't understand."
"What I mean is unfortunate." She straightened her expensive gown. "She inherited nothing worthy from her father."
I tightened my grip on the tiny dress in my hands. "Mother”
"It's Lady Evelyn." She cut me off sharply. "You've lived in this mansion long enough to know proper manners."
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Lady Evelyn."
"Much better." She glanced around the room again. "The east wing has been prepared."
I blinked. "The east wing?"
"Yes."
"For whom?"
Her lips curled into a satisfied smile. "For Celeste."
The dress slipped from my hands. "What?"
"Surely Kael didn't forget to tell you."
My pulse quickened. "Tell me what?"
"Celeste will be staying in the Alpha Mansion from today onward."
"No..." I shook my head. "No, that's impossible."
Evelyn laughed. "Oh, child. You still don't understand your place."
"The woman carrying the Alpha's heir deserves proper care."
My blood ran cold. "I'm carrying his heir."
She looked at Hope. "That little girl has already been born."
Then her gaze returned to my still-flat stomach. "Celeste is carrying the future."
Before I could respond, footsteps echoed outside. Kael entered. He stopped the moment he saw us.
"Mother."
"I was just informing Seraphina of the new arrangements."
His jaw tightened. "You could've waited until I arrived."
"I saw no reason to."
He sighed before looking at me. "I was going to tell you."
"When?" I asked quietly. "After she moved in?"
He didn't answer. The silence was enough.
"So it's true."
He nodded once. "She'll only stay until the baby is born."
I stared at him. "You're bringing your mistress into the same house where your daughter lives?"
His expression darkened. "Don't call her that."
A bitter laugh escaped me. "What should I call her then? The woman sleeping in your bed? The woman carrying your child? The woman who helped destroy our family?"
"Enough." His voice thundered through the room.
Hope startled awake and began crying. Instantly, I rushed to pick her up. "It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy's here."
I rocked her gently. Kael's eyes softened as he looked at Hope. He took a step toward us. Hope stopped crying the moment she saw him. She reached out with her tiny hand.
For one heartbreaking second... I thought he would hold her.
Instead—
"Alpha."
A sweet voice drifted into the room.
Celeste. She stood outside the open door wearing a flowing cream dress that barely hid the curve of her growing belly. She looked radiant. Healthy. Happy. Like the guiltless victor of a war.
The moment Kael heard her voice, he turned away from us. Without hesitation. Without regret.
His eyes landed on Celeste. A smile appeared on his face. The same smile that used to belong only to me.
"Are you settled in?"
She pouted. "I tried carrying one of my bags upstairs."
He frowned immediately. "I told you not to lift anything."
"It's too heavy."
"I'll do it."
He walked past me. Past Hope. Past the family he had promised to protect.
As he reached the doorway, Celeste slipped her hand into his. Naturally. Comfortably. As though she'd done it a thousand times before.
She looked over his shoulder. Straight at me.
Then... She smiled.
It wasn't friendly. It wasn't apologetic. It was a smile that said
I won.
They walked away together. Their laughter echoed down the hallway until it finally disappeared, the room fell unbearably quiet.
Evelyn turned to me one last time. "I suggest you get used to sharing."
Then she left and the door closed,I stood frozen in the middle of the room with Hope in my arms. Tears rolled silently down my face.
Hope looked up at me with innocent gray eyes. She had no idea why her mother's heart was breaking. She reached up with her tiny fingers and touched my cheek. Almost as if she wanted to wipe my tears away.
I forced a smile. "I'm okay."
The lie tasted bitter.
That night, sleep refused to come. Hope lay beside me after her midnight feeding. The mansion was quiet.
Until—
A woman's laughter drifted through the hallway. Then another. Then Kael's voice. Low. Warm. Intimate.
My bedroom was only a few doors away from the guest suites. Every sound carried through the silent corridors.
The bed creaked. Celeste giggled. Kael murmured something that made her laugh again.
I squeezed my eyes shut. Please... Please stop.
Another moan echoed through the walls. My hands trembled. I pressed a pillow over my ears.
It wasn't enough. I could still hear them. Every laugh. Every whispered promise. Every sound reminded me that the man I loved was giving another woman everything he had once promised me.
A tear slid onto Hope's tiny blanket, then another.
I looked down at my sleeping daughter. She deserved better than this. Better than a father who had already chosen another family. Better than a home filled with humiliation. Better than a mother who cried herself to sleep every night.
That was the moment something inside me finally broke.
I wasn't going to stay. Not anymore.
I would leave this pack. I would take my daughter somewhere far away. Somewhere no oneknew Alpha Kael Blackwood. Somewhere my little girl could grow up surrounded by love instead of betrayal.
Tomorrow.
Before anyone could stop me.
I would be gone.
