Chapter 1 — The Bittered Truth
Hazel
“Your test results are out.”
My heartbeat increased drastically as excitement coursed through my body.
My test results were out already.
Could I be pregnant?
I mean I have been feeling dizzy since yesterday and it could only mean one thing. I could be having morning sickness.
That would be the best news ever. It would, in fact, be the perfect gift for my fifth anniversary, which was in a month.
Aside from that, Maggie, Lucas' mum would eventually be able to accept me.
She never ceased to remind me of the fact that I haven't contributed to the household since I entered.
I was a rogue after all. I was a rogue years back before I met Alpha Lucas.
He knew I was his mate the first moment he set his eyes on me. My wolf was still dormant so I had no idea at first until later on.
I and Alpha Lucas have been married for five years now with no heir in sight.
I know it can't be easy for him, especially as the Alpha, but he has never put that pressure on me. In fact, he has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Giving him an heir is the least I can do to appreciate him, for everything he has done for me.
That aside, I would also be fulfilling Lucas' long dream of having a mini us.
He never told me about it though but I saw how he was always so concerned with his adopted sister's son.
If I didn't know better, I would think Lucas was the father of Isabella's son, Frank.
He was always there for Frank, always visiting him. He even had Frank’s picture as his wallpaper one time like that.
But now that I was having a baby, Lucas would be so happy. At least, this would be a real flesh of his.
I grabbed my bag and hurried out of the house.
Happiness surged through me as I pulled into the hospital and hurried into the waiting room.
My phone beeped several times. It was the pack's news, announcing Isabella's arrival after three years of being away.
For those three years, Isabella has been away from Frank too and Lucas had to take up the responsibility of being a father and a mother figure to him.
Because the pack is extremely strict when it comes to unmated she-wolves with children. Even now, we still don't know who Isabella's mate is.
To protect Isabella from judgment and scrutiny, she had no choice but to place his son under Lucas's and my care, at least for the time being.
I wasn't bothered by the news but at least now that Isabella is back, and I'm having a baby, Lucas can finally focus on me.
The thought alone made me giggle, but I still opened the news website anyway.
A lot of reporters were gushing at Isabella's arrival. But the pictures hadn't only carried Isabella's pictures, but also Lucas's.
They were hugging so deeply, Lucas wrapping his arms around her body as if he couldn't get enough of her.
I felt a stab of jealousy but soon pushed it to the back of my neck.
They were siblings so I shouldn't take anything seriously.
“You are next!” A voice called, jerking me out of my thoughts.
I tried to calm down, as I pushed the phone into the deep part of my bag and strode into the doctor's office.
“Miss Hazel,” the doctor, Ivy, started as she stretched out a piece of paper to me.
I took it, with skepticism, my heart pounding so hard I could barely hear the next words she said.
Unfolding it, my eyes scanned the result. Only that it wasn't a pregnancy test result.
“What is this?” I raised a brow and waited.
“According to the test report here, it shows that you've been taking a dangerous substance and it has damaged your womb.”
What!
“You are not pregnant and in fact, you might never be because you've taken too much of it and not only has it damaged your womb but also your wolf. Which means you might never even be able to shift,” she explained further.
I stared for a moment, confusion clouding my mind. It felt like I hadn't heard her clearly.
“But I didn't take anything,” I said, trying to make sense of everything.
My heart was racing so badly. What could I have taken that damaged my womb?
Does this mean I won't be able to give Lucas a child? An heir? The next Alpha?
No!
My mind was in turmoil.
“But I was feeling nauseous. I was also dizzy,” I tried to explain.
Perhaps there was a mistake somewhere.
She sighed, out of pity. “You've taken too much of the substance, Hazel, that it has damaged everything inside you. The next thing left is your heart. You were dying, Hazel and if you hadn't stopped, you would have.”
Shock kept me speechless and motionless for a long time.
I didn't know what I was supposed to even say. I had never felt so confused in my entire life.
“This,” Ivy was saying as she pulled out a small bottle, its contents a mystery. “This is used for treatment of a rare disease but in a certain amount and under careful supervision. You must have taken it in large quantities and well, you weren't monitored properly. It could_”
Ivy continued but I wasn't hearing her anymore. My eyes were fixed on the bottle.
I have seen it several times.
No! I have taken it several times because Lucas gave them to me.
He said it helped with hormones and would make me conceive faster.
So, he got them for me in dozens to be taken every month for five years.
My mate is the architect of my destruction?
Chapter 2 — Shocking Revelation
Hazel
No way!
There was no way that would be true.
Ivy scanned my face for a moment. “Are you familiar with it?”
Shock still kept me incoherent for some minutes.
Eventually, I nodded, my mouth still too heavy to carry.
“Where?”
Swallowing hard, I tried again. “Lucas gets it for me every month.”
Ivy's eyes narrowed slightly. “I'm sorry, Hazel but the Alpha has done damage we can't repair.”
I started to shake my head, my mind and head in turmoil. It just can't be.
“There's no way! I don't believe it! I request more tests! You have to conduct more tests!”
No way that would have happened. Lucas has always loved children.
There was no way he would stop me from having one.
I've seen how he cared for Frank. I'm sure he would care more if it were his own.
Besides, I was his Luna. What would he gain by doing that to me?
Why would he want to kill me? It just doesn't make sense.
Lucas met me and showed me what love was and even though our relationship has been a bit private, he has always shown everyone how much I meant to him.
The only person I knew who was against our marriage was Maggie, his mother, and even that was because we have been married for so long without an heir in sight.
So, everyone was hoping for a child from me!
“Hazel,” a soft voice called, somehow distant.
It took me a few minutes to realize I was already walking out of the hospital and Ivy was the one calling after me.
I knew I needed to talk to Lucas. I knew where he would be anyway. At the office.
I drove right straight there.
The door was slightly ajar, making me wonder if he really was inside.
“What will you do about Hazel now that the Luna is back?” A deep familiar voice inquired as I gripped the knob, ready to enter.
The voice forced me to a sudden stop. That was Sam, Lucas beta.
But what was he talking about? And who was the Luna?
“Yes,” a soft voice added quickly, almost winning. “You've kept her beside you for too long already. It's time to let her go.”
I stared for another moment, wondering if I had stepped into another universe.
But no, I was clearly standing in front of Lucas's office.
But I had yet to hear Lucas’ voice.
“When are you going to tell Hazel the marriage was never real? You need to pave a way for your true luna.”
For a moment, I couldn't breathe as I felt it difficult to push down a lump that had suddenly appeared in my throat.
There was another Luna? Whose marriage wasn't real?
I was more confused than shocked.
“Your son and I miss you. Frank can't wait to be with you and finally be able to call you daddy in public.”
Shock ramped through my body, almost paralysing my limbs.
I couldn't think for a moment. Was Lucas Frank's father?
Almost immediately, it started to be clear to me.
I had seen the signs but ignored them.
Lucas took care of Frank like his own but what? He truly was Frank's father?
And suddenly, I can't give birth because of what Lucas has been feeding me?
Why would he want a child with me when he has one of his already?
But it still didn't make any sense. Why would Lucas do that to me?
Lucas loves me so much. There has not been any issue since we married.
“Not yet, Sam,” Lucas said finally, his words lazy as if he was dragging them. “I need just two more weeks to finalize everything.”
“And what about after then?” the soft voice came again.
And no matter how much I tried, I couldn't figure out whose voice that was.
“She leaves,” Lucas replied, without batting a lash.
My heart dropped, almost stopping for those seconds.
How could Lucas debate me like that?
A lot of thoughts were going through my mind at the same time.
My mind was going through some transition I didn't prepare for.
“Hazel is just a rogue I found. I found her so I can make her disappear,” he said with a little cheekiness, one could see he truly meant it.
“You know I wouldn't have agreed to marry her in the first place if it wasn't for grandfather. Hezel happens to save the life of grandpa, and my grandpa was so obsessed with having her as my wife.”
“And at the time, Frank needed someone to be his mother on paper, I couldn't stand by and watch you be judged for having a pup without a mate.”
“Hazel was so annoying, always clingy to you,” the feminine voice laughed.
“Yes right,” Lucas joined in. “I needed to deceive her to make it look like I truly loved her. And she was so gullible.”
I blinked, wondering how I had been with such a man for five years. How could I have trusted him?
I literally do everything for the Willfield family. I played the perfect wife by managing the household and even the company.
The company wouldn't have gone anywhere without my help. I built it brick by brick.
I pushed the door open slightly to be able to see who the lady was.
My heart skipped a beat at what I was doing but I knew I needed to find out everything. I need the truth.
I saw Lucas in his seat and a woman on his lap. I couldn't see her face clearly because of the way she sat.
“You know what, Lucas,” the soft voice laughed as she stretched out a diamond necklace from her neck. “I need you to get me another diamond necklace.”
She stood up finally, allowing me to see who she was.
My eyes widened with shock at who I was staring at.
It was Isabella! Lucas’ adopted sister.
Chapter 3 — The Rise
Lucas is cheating on me with his adopted sister?
It felt so surreal and so hard to believe. How could that be? They were siblings, weren't they?
So, five years ago, he married me just to cover up the fact that he had sex with his sister?
So Isabella was his true Luna all along? And I was just a substitute?
I stared at my foolishness.
“Lucas,” Isabella whined, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I turned towards her again, just as I noticed the pendant around her neck.
I found the necklace three years ago but suddenly, it vanished. I confronted Lucas about it because I thought he brought it for me.
He apologized, saying he misplaced it.
So, he got me another one, a different one because the pendant was done by the best of the best.
And only two were produced and it cost quite a fortune.
So, he didn't misplace it. He gave it to his Luna?
Then who was I? A mere rogue he found?
My heart dropped, and I felt it difficult to breathe properly for the next few minutes.
My legs faltered, almost pulling over under me and a wave of coldness washed over me.
For five years, I thought I had his trust. I had no one else except him. I thought I could trust him.
No! I did trust him!
“Alright,” Lucas agreed, laughing as well. “I will but well, we need to get the grand king on our terms, as well as other packs that have been selected, especially the Moon rage pack. You know how it goes?”
Sam nodded once.
“But this time, keep Alpha Daemon and Alpha Monica wrapped inside it. They will be our scapegoats if the grand king ever suspects anything.”
I turned around, unable to hear more.
My heart felt heavy and my legs threatened to fail under me.
If I stayed any longer, I might actually collapse.
I managed to get to my car. The second the door clicked shut, I crumpled.
The tears I had been holding escaped, making me feel even more miserable.
I couldn't believe what was happening to me. The only person I trusted most in my entire life has been feeding me lies.
Not only that, but he was also secretly killing me.
My phone beeped again as if that wasn't enough, there was still news on Isabella's return.
There was a video of the interview she had recently.
The interviewer was asking her about her husband.
She responded that she was married and has been for years. In fact, now that she had returned, it was to stay with her husband.
In the video, she touched the pendant as if it was a sign of reassurance.
It was clear now. There were no lies anywhere. Frank was four years old which means Lucas cheated during our marriage.
My phone rang suddenly, jerking me out of my reverie when nothing else could. It was Lucas.
I hesitated briefly before picking it up. “Hello?”
I wonder why he's calling though.
There was a brief hesitation. “You sound strange. Are you alright?”
I cleared my throat. “Just a bit cold,” I lied.
What was I supposed to say? That I knew the truth already? What could I do at this point?
The thought of it brought fresh tears to my eyes.
“When are you coming back? Do you want me to pick you up?”
“Oh no,” I said quickly. “I will be there soon.”
“Alright darling,” he responded, his voice soft.
My heart bled the more. The fact that I had trusted his words for five years!
How could he speak to me this way and I wouldn't?
“I just want to say Sophia is around with Frank and they might be staying for a few more days. I hope you don't mind?”
I stared, unable to think for a moment.
Lucas had said it though, that he needed just two weeks to get rid of me. Then, Isabella would take over as the real Luna.
“Oh,” was all I could say.
Not that there was anything to say anyway.
“Come home quickly, I'm waiting,” he laughed, as if I didn't just hear him speak of me like trash a few minutes ago.
I closed my eyes against the pain that seeped from the deepest part of my soul.
“Alright,” I replied eventually and the line went off.
I stared at the screen for a moment, my brain blank as a question rose in my head.
What should I do?
My phone rang almost immediately, its noise disturbing this time. It was an unknown caller so I ignored it.
I have too much on my plate to pick random calls but yet again, the call came in.
I picked it up this time, anger brewing inside of me.
“Yes! What do you want!” I practically yelled, not minding who the caller was.
No one spoke at first, as if I had truly scared them off.
Then, there was a clearing of the throat. “I'm sorry ma’am but this is very urgent. I'm just so glad we found you eventually.”
I gathered my brows in confusion. “I don't understand. Who are you? And why are you looking for me?”
“Ma’am, your father is sick and needs to give you his blessing before he passes. Also, he has selected a suitor for you already.”
My father? Suitor? It all didn't match.
“I don't understand. I think you have the wrong number because I am an orphan.”
“No you are not,” I could hear the smile in his voice. “Your father is the Alpha of the Moonrage pack and you are the next in line. We lost you when you were very young and we have been trying to find you since then.”
