Chapter 1 — A Desperate Goodbye

Cassia Durant's POV
"Rylan, we’ve been mates for three years now. You’ve never touched me… I gave you and your first love my blessing. I’ll accept your rejection… after tonight, you can go to her. Just this once, let me have something to hold on to. Please…"
I leaned in and kissed him, desperate, drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
I knew what I’d done—drugging Rylan Thorne, forcing my mate, going against Moon Goddess’s will. It was wrong.
But I’d loved him for too long. I loved him too deeply.
All I wanted now was a shred of comfort. One night to remember.
"Cassia, don’t you dare!" Rylan glared at me, fury blazing in his cold, sharp-featured face.
"I’m not afraid of anything."
A tear slipped from the corner of my eye as my kisses grew frantic. My hands fumbled across his body.
I just wanted him. Just once. Completely.
Rylan burned with rage.
He tried to push me away. He was an Alpha—he should’ve had the strength. But his flushed skin told me otherwise. The aphrodisiac was working. He couldn’t fight the bond pulling us together.
Instead of pushing me off, he grabbed my waist and slammed into me, rough and unrelenting.
I couldn’t stop trembling.
So this was what it felt like… to have the man I loved, even if just for a moment. And now that I had it… it broke me.
I heard his ragged breaths and felt the heat of his body. Tears streamed down my face.
I stared up at Rylan—this man I had loved for three long years—trying to burn his face into my memory.
I knew this would be the first and last time I’d ever have him.
"Don’t look at me like that. It’s disgusting." Even caught in the grip of lust, hatred still burned in his eyes. Suddenly, he grabbed me hard and pinned me down. He snarled, "Cassia! Give it up. I will never accept a lowly Omega like you."
His movements turned brutal. I cried out from the pain.
But the ache in my body was nothing compared to the shattering in my heart.
I was Cassia, Luna of the Shadow Pack. It had been three years since I’d formed a mate bond with Alpha Rylan.
To the outside world, I was the Luna of our pack—fated mate to the strongest Alpha. My life should’ve been perfect.
But only I knew the truth. These three years had been nothing but hell.
Rylan had never once touched me.
He hadn’t even marked me, refusing Moon Goddess’s guidance. For a wolf, it was the deepest humiliation.
I was weak. An omega. I hadn’t even awakened my wolf yet. In our world, I was nothing.
For an Alpha like Rylan, having a wolf-less Omega for a mate was a disgrace.
If I hadn’t happened to save his grandfather from Wolfsbane… if he hadn’t needed to take over the pack with a Luna at his side… he would’ve rejected me without a second thought.
But in the end, I still got my wish. I became his mate. I was overjoyed.
I had loved him long before we ever knew we were fated mates.
I was born into a long line of wolf healers. But I’d been weak from birth. I’d never once sensed my wolf.
One night, while I was out, I ran into a pack of rogues. They circled me, sneering, bragging about how they’d take me—how they’d share me. Without my wolf, there was no escape. I knew I was about to die.
That’s when Rylan appeared.
He didn’t even have to lift a finger. Just the force of his Alpha aura had those wolves dropping to their knees.
And in that moment, I fell in love with him. I envied the future mate who would one day stand by his side.
But now... now I regretted every choice I’d made. Because for the past three years, Rylan hadn’t shown me a shred of love.
I worked tirelessly to keep the pack running, taking care of every little thing so he wouldn’t have to. I knew his stomach was weak, so I climbed cliffs with my bare hands, desperate to find the herbs that might help him.
He ignored every gesture of care.
He would rather suffer in pain than mark me—because the one he loved had never been me. It had always been his first love, Ivy Kessler.
He’d told me to my face. "Only Ivy is worthy to be my mate. You’re not even in the same league as her."
And tonight was no different. It was nearly midnight, and he still hadn’t come home.
Three years. It had always been like this. He stayed out with Ivy as long as he pleased, then came home when he was done.
I was done living like this. I finally understood—Alpha Rylan’s heart was something I could never reach, no matter how hard I tried.
So I let go. But before it ended, I wanted one thing. I wanted him. Just once. One memory to cling to after I walked away.
"Mmm..." Each thrust slammed into me, rougher than the last, driven by his hate.
My face was buried in the pillow as I took it all.
It’s fine. Hate me all you want. I’ll be gone from the Shadow Pack tomorrow. You’ll never have to see me again.

Chapter 2 — Breaking the Bond

Cassia’s POV
After one brutal night with Rylan, every inch of my body ached.
He was Shadow Pack’s Alpha. A fierce warrior—and in bed, just as relentless.
I forced myself to sit up, my skin burning with the marks he’d left behind.
Facing the moon outside the window, I silently recited the vow to break our bond.
"Great Moon Goddess, I willingly sever my fated bond with Rylan. I willingly bear the pain it brings. I willingly leave Shadow Pack and become a rogue. From this moment on, there will be no connection between us. I will no longer be his Luna."
The second the words left me, agony ripped through my body.
It felt like every bone in my body had shattered. Flames burst in my chest, racing under my skin, burning me alive.
I collapsed to my knees, sweat pouring from my forehead.
So this was what it felt like to break the bond. The pain was unbearable. But this was my choice.
Thank the Goddess we had never marked each other. Without a mark, I could break the bond on my own.
After tonight, Rylan and I would be strangers.
I had no idea how long the pain lasted. When it finally ended, I was trembling, drenched in sweat, hollow inside.
I felt empty inside.
From now on, I had no home. No pack. No mate.
I was just a rogue.
I looked at Rylan one last time as he slept, unaware. Then I grabbed my bag and walked out of the house. Out of Shadow Pack. Out of his life.
Rylan’s POV
When I finally woke, it was already noon.
My first thought was to strangle Cassia.
I was Shadow Pack’s Alpha—sharp, calculating. No one had ever managed to outsmart me. No one had ever gotten the upper hand on me.
And yet somehow, I’d been played by Cassia. An omega.
Fury burned through me. I scanned the room, but she was gone. Even her luggage had disappeared.
A strange unease gripped me—then pain slammed into my chest as if something had been ripped straight from my heart.
Fire surged from my heart, consuming me from the inside out. And then—suddenly, I felt the bond shatter. A hollow emptiness settled in my chest.
I stood there in disbelief.
Cassia had really severed our mate bond? How was that possible?
Even now, I couldn’t believe she’d do it willingly. For three years, she’d fought so hard to hold onto me.
She must have done something—some trick to make me think the bond was gone.
I reached out through my Alpha link, searching the pack for any trace of her.
But to my shock—I couldn’t sense her at all.
I couldn’t sense her—not as my mate, not even as a member of Shadow Pack.
Panicked, I jumped out of bed, got dressed, and stormed downstairs. "Have you seen Cassia?" I demanded.
Daxton, my Beta, blinked in surprise. "Alpha, Ms. Durant left before dawn. She said she was leaving Shadow Pack on her own. Said she wouldn’t trouble you again."
I froze.
Cassia had really done it. She’d severed our mate bond and left Shadow Pack.
Panic hit me hard—followed by anger and a gnawing sense of dread.
That foolish woman. Where could she go without the pack’s protection?
Without her wolf, alone as a rogue… she wouldn’t survive out there.
I didn’t understand why I cared. I hated her. Wanted her gone.
But the second she vanished, I couldn’t stop the panic clawing at my chest. I ordered my Beta to track her down and bring her to me.
But they couldn’t find her.
It was as if she’d vanished into thin air. We couldn’t trace her. Not at all.
Ten months later, a dying baby girl was delivered to me—out of nowhere.
And the moment I caught her scent, I knew.
She carried my blood.
She was my daughter.
And there was only one woman I had ever been with—Cassia.
She had given birth to this child.
I went mad trying to track down whoever had delivered the baby. But there wasn’t a single trace to follow.
I stared down at the fragile girl in my arms. She was so weak, her breaths shallow, her life hanging by a thread. I had no choice but to take her to the best wolf healer in the pack.
The doctor’s face was grim. "She’s in bad shape. Abandoned right after birth. She hasn’t even been fed."
Those words ignited pure rage in me.
Cassia. You heartless woman.
It was one thing to leave me. But to abandon a newborn? To abandon your own child?
When I find you—I swear—you will pay for this.

Chapter 3 — Returning to Shadow Pack

Cassia’s POV
Six years later.
Yorkmere, Wolfsbane Research Group.
I had just stepped out of the lab when my assistant, Linda, caught up to me. "Dr. Durant, Mr. Nolan needs to see you. He asked you to stop by his office."
I’d worked through the night, analyzing Wolfsbane’s toxicity. Exhaustion weighed heavily on me. But at her words, I jolted awake, alert. "Did he say what it’s about? Don’t tell me... the twins wrecked another project?"
"I’m afraid they did." Linda gave me a look of sympathy.
When I’d given birth to my boys, the delivery had been difficult and dangerous. I’d been hanging on by a thread when my wolf finally awakened—saving both me and my sons.
Ever since then, my wolf had been deeply bonded to the twins. Even across the entire facility, I could sense Lucian and Killian’s nervous anticipation after getting into trouble.
After leaving Shadow Pack, I had thrown myself into the Wolfsbane project overseas.
I came from a long line of wolf healers. I’d grown up surrounded by the scent of herbs and ancient wolf medicine. That background helped me earn the top spot in Mr. Nolan’s research team.
That was when I discovered I was pregnant. I struggled with the decision—whether to keep them or not.
But once my wolf connected with the life growing inside me, I could feel their heartbeats through our bond.
I couldn’t let them go.
I chose to keep them.
There had been triplets—two boys and a girl. The girl hadn’t survived the birth—she’d suffered oxygen deprivation. But my two boys had pulled through—Lucian and Killian.
Just thinking about those two brilliant little troublemakers brought a smile to my face.
Of course, now I was about to take the heat for them... again.
I hurried toward Nolan’s office.
The moment I opened the door, there they were—Lucian and Killian, swinging their legs on the sofa.
When they saw me, their eyes lit up. They jumped down and ran straight to me.
One on each side, they tugged me onto the couch and started massaging my shoulders, trying to ease my exhaustion.
Looking at their sweet faces, I sighed. Guess taking the blame is worth it after all.
"Oh, now you’re acting innocent? You sure weren’t this sweet when you hacked my computer."
Behind his desk, Nolan Pierce was fuming. "And here I thought these two were angels."
Lucian puffed up his chest. "It’s your fault, Mr. Nolan! You keep making Mommy work late. Look at her—she’s exhausted!"
"Yeah!" Killian chimed in, his little hands still massaging my shoulders. "You can’t keep making Mommy work day and night!"
Nolan let out a frustrated laugh. "You two are the only ones always looking out for your mom. And for the record—everyone here works just as hard." He shook his head and turned to me. "Anyway, how’s the project coming along?"
"Very well. I’ll send the latest data to your computer later today." I paused. "Speaking of which—has your computer recovered?"
Nolan ran a hand through his hair. "It’s been an hour. Still nothing."
I chuckled and patted Killian’s head. "Go fix it—and no more games. No more messing around. What if you accidentally deleted something important?"
Killian grinned. "I wouldn’t! I always make backups. Plus, I set up three layers of wolf-code encryption. There’s no way anything would get lost!"
A few minutes later, the screen flickered and returned to normal.
I turned to Nolan. "I’m so sorry. The boys caused you trouble again. Please don’t hold it against them."
Nolan couldn’t help but smile. "Relax. I didn’t call you here to scold you. I have a new assignment for you. I’m planning to open a research institute back home—focused on blending ancient werewolf healing practices with modern wolf medicine. But the setup is going to be complicated, so I want you to lead the team."
I hadn’t expected that.
It had been six full years since I left home.
And I’d built a life here. I’d grown attached to this place.
Should I really go back?
