Chapter 1 — The Substitute Bride

A shrill, venomous voice cut through the silence of the small apartment, the speaker's contempt for humans oozing through every word. "Isabella Frost, you lowly human—you have to mate with Alexander Vance, the comatose Alpha of the Shadowfang Pack, in my daughter's place!"
Amanda Frost, Isabella's adoptive mother, didn't bother hiding her disdain. "The Frost family and Shadowfang Pack made a marriage pact years ago, one my biological daughter was meant to honor. But now that Alexander's a vegetable, you're the one who'll take her spot. It's what you owe us.
"Without the witch's guidance, you'd have died in the wilderness years ago. A lowly human like you should count it a blessing to latch onto a top-tier pack like Shadowfang. Quit acting like an ungrateful brat."
"I'll do it," Isabella replied calmly.
Amanda's gasp of shock echoed through the phone, loud and unfiltered. "What did you say? I've begged you three times, even threatened to yank your residency permit with the Elder Council—kick you back to the human world to fend for yourself—and you shot me down every time. Why the sudden change?"
Amanda's confusion was understandable. No one in the entire Blood Moon Pack knew the secret Isabella guarded deep in her heart: she was in love with Sebastian Sterling, the pack's Alpha. Only the two of them shared that fragile, hidden truth.
Sebastian had kept their relationship under wraps, fearing the brutal discrimination and bullying Isabella would face as a human, fearing that the Elder Council would strip her of her right to stay in the werewolf world. For that secret love, Isabella had endured countless unspoken sneers, sideways glances, and even given up the chance to return to the human world, loving him enough to set aside her pride and wait.
No one in the pack forgot the day Amanda and her husband lost their biological daughter to a rival pack. Grief-stricken and desperate, they'd turned to a witch, who'd guided them to the border between human and werewolf territory with a single promise, "Salvation awaits here." There, in the dense forest, they'd found a human baby in a cradle—Isabella.
Clinging to the witch's words, they'd taken her in temporarily. The Pack Elder Council, sympathetic to their loss, had granted a rare exception, allowing a human to remain in the werewolf world. Now that their biological daughter was back, they'd never dream of making their precious child spend her life watching over a comatose man. So they'd dumped the responsibility on Isabella, their convenient substitute.
The marriage was little more than a formality—someone to fulfill the pact and care for the comatose Alexander. Amanda had offered Isabella as a replacement to Shadowfang Pack, and to her surprise, the pack had agreed without hesitation, paying no mind to Isabella's human status.
Amanda had assumed Isabella's previous refusals were a fear of suffering, never guessing the real reason: she'd wanted to hold onto her secret relationship with Sebastian, no matter how hidden it was.
Now, Isabella's sudden agreement to marry a complete stranger trapped in a deep sleep left Amanda reeling.
Isabella's voice was calm, almost numb, as she repeated the words. "I'll marry him."
Relief washed over Amanda's tone, quickly replaced by a sharp warning. "The witch picked a mating date in a month—the Shadowfang Pack will hold the ceremony then. Someone will come to pick you up and take you to the Vance family's place.
"I've already accepted their mating gift—three chests of high-grade energy crystals. You owe the Frost family this, so I'm not giving them back.
"If you back out, if you ruin this alliance, you'll learn just how miserable a human without protection can be in werewolf territory.
"I've got the mating contract from Shadowfang Pack. Someone will bring it to you later. By the rules, you have to press your blood seal on it to make it official. Don't even think about cutting corners—once that blood dries, there's no going back."
Isabella had been kicked out of the Frost family years ago, not even allowed to take a single piece of clothing with her. Any gratitude she'd felt for them had died the day they tossed her out.
Cutting Amanda off mid-rant, she spoke firmly, "I won't back out.
"The Vance family is a top Alpha clan—I'm sure their mating gift will be more than enough. You found me because of the witch and raised me for eighteen years. Now I'm marrying into the Shadowfang Pack in your daughter's place. That settles any debt I owed you.
"From now on, the Frost family and I are even. No more ties, no more favors."
With that, Isabella ended the call.
She settled into the dining chair, fingers trembling slightly as she pulled up the pack's internal social media—the very thing that had pushed her to make this decision, to marry a comatose man and leave everything behind.
Her secret mate, Sebastian, had just mated with someone else in a grand, public ceremony.

Chapter 2 — Breaking the Mate Bond

After ending the call with Amanda, Isabella's gaze returned to the screen. The werewolf social network was ablaze, flooded with videos of Sebastian and Violet Messel's mating ceremony. Violet was his ex-mate, and now, it seemed, his new one.
In the videos, Sebastian—heir to the Blood Moon Pack—bit Violet's neck in front of their clan, marking her as his own. Friends and family cheered, celebrating the "perfect couple" for reconciling and hoping they'd soon have pure-blooded pups.
No one knew the man everyone was congratulating had already promised himself to Isabella; she was his only real mate, not the other way around. In that sudden betrayal, Isabella was the one left in the dark, the one abandoned.
She'd spent half a year planning their own mating ceremony, every detail filled with hope for their future—all built on Sebastian's promises.
When Sebastian had regained his Alpha strength, he'd been eager to mate with her. But the Sterling family had forbidden it, threatening to strip him of his heir status if he married a human. He'd comforted her, saying that once they were mated, the family would have to accept her to save face for the Blood Moon Pack. For that promise, she'd helped him plan their secret ceremony, never imagining Violet would end up taking her place.
Four years earlier, Sebastian, then the future heir to the Blood Moon Pack, had been seriously injured in a territory conflict. His bloodline power had faded, and he'd almost become a useless wolf. The cold-hearted Sterling family had abandoned him, and Violet, his mate at the time, had left him immediately to seek protection from a stronger Alpha abroad.
It was Isabella who'd found him on that snowy night, when he'd been kicked out of his family and was ready to end his life. She'd heard rumors of a witch's forbidden potion that could reactivate an Alpha's bloodline—but the cost was deadly. The potion required the seeker's pure blood as a catalyst, and it would shorten their lifespan. No one had been willing to sacrifice that for a fallen wolf, not even his own family.
Isabella hadn't hesitated. She'd tracked down the reclusive witch and offered a deal. The witch, seeing her pure human blood as perfect for the potion, set a cruel condition: Isabella would have to give her most of her blood every month, and it would cost her ten years of her life.
Watching Sebastian lie weak and lifeless in bed, Isabella thought of how short human lifespans already were. Ten years to save the man she loved? It was worth it. She'd agreed without a second thought, traveling to the forest every month to give blood, so much so that she'd faint afterward, too weak to stand.
To pay the witch's fees, she'd even worked as a punching bag for werewolf nobles with twisted hobbies. Humans lack werewolves' healing abilities; she'd broken three ribs once, so much pain that she could barely breathe, and had to lie in bed for a month to recover. Through it all, she'd never complained to Sebastian, not once.
In those dark days, her only hope had been Sebastian's dependence on her while he was awake, and his promise to make her his mate no matter what once he recovered.
She'd endured it all, and finally, the witch had finished the potion. Sebastian had not only stood up again—he'd regained his peak Alpha power. He'd kissed her, whispering in her ear that he'd love her forever, never betray her.
He'd known that mating with a human would result in impure pups, that it might cost him his heir status. But he'd held her tight, his eyes full of determination. "You're more important to me than pure blood or the pack."
Isabella had thought they'd made it through the worst. After their mating ceremony, they'd overcome the prejudice of their worlds, and everything would be bright.
But then Violet had come back.
Word had spread that Violet was seriously ill, her bloodline power fading, and she had only six months to live. Her last wish, she'd said, was to become Sebastian's real mate.
Sebastian had felt sorry for her, so the mating ceremony that Isabella had spent half a year planning had become Violet's.
The wedding dress she'd sewn with her own hands was on Violet's body. The wolf-tooth ring Sebastian had custom-made for her was on Violet's left ring finger.
Tears blurred Isabella's vision as she stared at the pendant around Violet's neck.
She knew that pendant—it was the only thing left to her by her human parents.
Amanda had found it on her when she'd picked her up as a baby.
It looked ordinary, but it held a strange protective power. After she'd started giving blood to the witch and lost ten years of her life, her body had been so weak that Isabella could barely stand. That pendant, worn close to her heart, had nourished her, helping her recover. She'd never taken it off, not even when she slept.
She'd lost it in a fight a while back. After that, she'd felt weak and faint again.
Sebastian had told her he'd found it, that he'd give it back to her on her birthday as their mating token, to make up for the family she'd never had as a human.
But just because Violet had said she liked it, that the human trinket felt "comfortable," he'd given it to her.
At that moment, all the love and sacrifice Isabella had poured into Sebastian felt pointless.
She didn't call him, didn't beg him to come home.
Instead, Isabella lit the candles on the vanilla cake in front of her—it was her birthday, the day she'd once hoped would be their mating day.
She watched the candles burn down, the cake melting into a messy puddle—mirroring her heart, which had burned out overnight, no warmth left.
Isabella finally understood: her human identity, her sacrifices, her love for Sebastian—none of it had ever really mattered to him.
Dawn was breaking when Sebastian came home, his clothes still carrying Violet's scent.
He frowned at the sight of Isabella sitting at the table, her eyes bloodshot, clearly having stayed up all night.
"Why aren't you asleep? You know humans can't handle staying up late," he asked, his tone arrogant, as if she were nothing more than his property.
Isabella looked up at him, her gaze empty of the love that had once filled it—as if she were staring at a stranger.
She said, "Sebastian, let's break our mate bond. And tell Violet to give back my pendant—the one my parents left me."

Chapter 3 — A Heart Turned Cold

Sebastian had rushed over right after the mating ceremony. In his mind, marking Violet had been nothing more than fulfilling a dying wolf's last wish, not a real mating. The one he truly wanted to spend his life with was Isabella. Once Violet died, the mark would fade with her bloodline, and he could mate with Isabella openly. He'd never considered leaving her.
When he heard her words, he knew she'd seen the news about him and Violet—he thought she was just jealous.
He hated it when his mate threw tantrums, but he'd never entertained the idea of ending things with her. After all, his mating with Violet was just for show; Isabella was the one who'd be by his side forever.
He knew he should have told her beforehand, but he'd brushed it off as a small thing, not worth worrying her about.
Besides, Sebastian had a bigger plan. When he told Isabella, "You're more important than the heir status," he'd meant it. But after being abandoned by his family, he'd learned that power was the only way to protect a human like her in a world that hated them.
Mating with Violet would calm his family, win him the Elder Council's support, and give him the power to keep Isabella safe. It was the best choice for both of them, or so he thought.
Softening his tone, he pulled out a beautiful burgundy velvet jewelry box. "Don't be mad. I didn't forget your birthday—this is for you."
Inside lay a necklace made of Moonlight Stone, a gem that gathered moon essence and calmed werewolf bloodlines—priceless.
The pendant in the center was a pink diamond, as big as a pigeon's egg. It was far more expensive than her parents' pendant, but completely useless to a human like Isabella.
Sebastian always saw things from a werewolf's perspective, measuring value by their standards, never truly understanding her human emotions or the things she cherished.
With her love for him gone, all Isabella felt was exhaustion. She didn't want him anymore.
Sebastian knew better than anyone how deeply Isabella had loved him, how "unable to let go" she'd been.
When she stayed silent, he assumed she'd given up on being mad.
He picked up the necklace, reaching to fasten it around her neck.
Isabella snapped, slapping his hand away, her voice firm with stubbornness, "I don't want this necklace!
"I want my parents' pendant! It's mine—why did you give it to Violet? I just want it back!"
He frowned. Still throwing a fit.
Sebastian's patience snapped, and a powerful Alpha aura surged from him, filling the room. To other werewolves, it was a warning. To a weak human like Isabella, it felt like a mountain pressing down on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
"Violet likes that pendant. She's so sick—how long do you think she'll even have it? Why are you being so selfish, so cold-hearted? Is this all human emotions are—petty possessiveness?" he said coldly.
Selfish and cold-hearted. He'd automatically sided with Violet, his fellow werewolf, and cast Isabella aside just because she was human.
Telling her to stop fighting with a dying woman felt absurd.
That pendant is mine—what is wrong with wanting back the only thing my parents have left me?
Just because I am human, does that mean I deserve to have everything taken from me, even the right to fight back?
Do all my years of enduring discrimination and sacrifice count for nothing—just to be met with betrayal and blame?
I'm not that desperate.
Before she could speak, Sebastian's phone rang—sharp and urgent.
It was Violet.
Her voice sounded weak and in pain, soft enough to stir any male werewolf's protective instinct. "Seb, I just coughed up blood. I'm so scared... can you come?"
Sebastian hesitated. He hadn't finished calming Isabella down, but he knew she'd never leave him.
Violet, though, was dying. He'd have plenty of time to make it up to Isabella later, once he had the power he needed.
"Violet, don't cry. I'm on my way," he cooed, his voice gentle.
He didn't even glance at Isabella before rushing out the door, slamming it shut behind him.
Isabella laughed bitterly, kicking the necklace into the corner.
That was how it had been for the past month, ever since Violet had come back.
Anytime she was upset or sick, he'd drop everything to be with her—day or night, no questions asked.
All those words he'd whispered in her ear, about loving her more than blood or power? They'd been nothing but a dream.
But luckily, it was almost over.
In a month, she'd marry Alexander, the Alpha of Shadowfang Pack.
She knew nothing about the comatose Alpha, but a faint glimmer of hope lingered in her heart. Compared to Sebastian's lies and betrayal, even a man who'd never wake up might give her the peace she craved—no need to please, no need to sacrifice. She had a feeling this stranger, the Shadow Alpha, would be different from every other werewolf she'd ever met.
And Sebastian? He'd be free to be with Violet, happy and unburdened. Perfect.
Funny enough, a month later was Sebastian's birthday.
He'd celebrate his birthday, and she'd mate with another man.
Isabella couldn't wait to see his reaction when he found out.
