Chapter 1 — Not A Transaction
Gina’s P.O.V
“I, William Hilton, future Alpha of the Abuja bloodmoon pack, reject you, Regina Thornton as my mate and future Luna” William said without batting an eyelid as he stood up from the bed.
“What?” My jaw dropped open as I stared at him. It was hard to understand what he had just said because it didn't make sense, not after everything he said to me last night. My heart was literally breaking inside my chest. I had never felt so much pain before, it was worse than menstrual cramps. It felt like someone had removed my heart, stuffed a thousand needles into it and then placed it back incorrectly.
We had just had the most amazing night in each other's arms. I couldn’t understand why he would suddenly reject me.
“Last night was a mistake. It should never have happened. I got caught up in the mate's connection” his voice echoed as he put on his pants.
Looking into his eyes, I could see that there was more he wanted to say but he couldn’t. I wanted to stand up and hug him, maybe if I was close to him again like last night he would remember the connection we shared but my legs failed me and I fell off the bed and landed on the floor. Panic flooded his amber eyes and just when I thought he was going to help me up. He opened his wallet and tossed some cash at me.
“No one can know that the goddess set us up together” he didn’t wait for my response before leaving my room. As the door shut behind him, I wrapped my arms around my knees and finally let the tears fall.
All my life, I’ve stayed away from guys, I knew I was going to find my mate, even after turning eighteen, four years ago, I still stood strong knowing my mate wasn’t far. I thought he’d be happy to know that I had kept myself for him. Last night after a dinner with William’s family, his parents forced him to give me a ride home. I was more than glad to find out that he was my mate, because I’ve always had a crush on him, I willingly gave myself to him, all the years of held back emotions had been released but now everything was ruined and I didn’t even know why.
My head jerked up as my door was aggressively pushed open. William sauntered back into the room and shut the door behind him. I wiped at my tears. I didn’t want him to see me crying. He did not deserve to.
“What do you want?” I was glad I could finally stand up, my wolf, Livy was back, she had been silent since the rejection. She was weak but at least I could feel her presence.
William walked towards me, his eyes moved over my body, making me conscious of the fact that the only thing covering my nakedness was a little white robe that stopped above my knees. I hated that even though I was mad at him, I still wanted him.
“You have to accept my rejection, or it isn’t complete” He stated with seriousness in his voice.
“No” how could I accept the rejection when I didn't want to be rejected?
“Accept it” he repeated, this time his voice held more authority but I was already in too much pain to care.
I held my stomach to control the gut wrenching pain in my abdomen.
“At least tell me why you rejected me” I whispered as my strength was failing me.
“You have no family, sure you’ve called my family yours for a long time but it doesn’t count”
I stepped back as his words pierced my already injured heart, my hand pushed unto the wall for support. He was right. I had lost my family ten years ago and his family took me in.
“Why does it matter if I have a family? The goddess chose me for you, isn’t that enough?”
He let out a low chuckle that sent shivers down my spine. Surely Williams had not always been this cynical. Had I just been too blind?
“I am going to be the alpha, I need my Luna to be someone who can benefit the pack”
“Marriage should be about love and not making connections. It is not a transaction” I stated through gritted teeth, even with my wolf back, the rejection was taking its toll on me, I felt like I was going to pass out at any minute.
“On the contrary it is a transaction. Accept the rejection now, Gina” he moved towards me again and I moved back again, this time my back hit the wall, Livy growled inside of me.
I was trapped but I wasn’t going to accept the rejection, not because his scent was clouding my senses or because his eyes made me weak. I wasn’t going to accept it because a little part of me was holding on to hope that he would regret his decision later.
“I will not accept it” I Accidentally yelled and his eyes grew wide at my audacity, but he wasn’t mad, if anything, he looked surprised. His shoulders fell and his eyes softened, he leaned towards me, his breath tickled my face . Livy was jumping inside of me, she was sore from the rejection but she was excited at the proximity. His nose brushed mine and my eyes shut waiting for his lips to meet mine.
“I will never want you, accept the rejection now and let us both be free” he whispered.
My eyes snapped open and a tear fell out. His words had damaged any hope I had left. My knees felt weak, I had no idea how I was still standing straight.
“I will not accept it” I said with fake strength to mask my pain. This time I wasn’t accepting it because I wanted to hurt him. I wanted to feel like even though I was weak I had some power over him. He wanted to be free and I held the key to it.
His eyes filled with annoyance that his words had not moved me in the way he expected.
“What is wrong with you?” he yelled. He wanted to say more but then the door was suddenly pushed open.
Chapter 2 — You Can't Be My Boss!
Gina’s P.O.V
Our gaze directed to the door as it moved from its hinges. I already knew who it was. Only one person entered my room without knocking.
“What the fuck is going on here?” Audrey, my best friend and William’s younger sister asked as she looked at our position. William immediately stepped away from me like I was some plague he was avoiding.
“Did you have sex with my brother?” she immediately asked. Her eyes glued on me. I felt a bead of sweat form on my forehead as I looked back at William for support, but he wasn't looking at me. He picked up his jacket and completely ignored his sister’s presence.
“We will continue this later” he said to me and walked away. As soon as he left the room, I slumped onto the bed.
The strength I had been mustering left my body instantly, and the realization of everything started to set in. I had found my mate and I had been rejected.
“Did you fuck my brother?” Audrey was never one to mince words which was one of the reasons her parents were so glad when she said she was moving in with me. I looked at her and dropped my head into my palms. She had a sixth sense for things like this, she could always tell when two people had done it. There was no need lying to her, when she already knew the answer.
“We did but it’s never happening again. He said it was a mistake” I hugged my knees to my chest and evened out my breathing. I had to get my energy back somehow, even though my whole body felt like it had been in an accident. I still had to go to work.
I felt the bed sink beside me as Audrey sat beside me. Her hand planted itself on my head and she stroked my hair gently.
“What happened to waiting for your mate?”
I didn’t know what to tell her, William had made it clear that no one was to know I was his mate. I guess he was that embarrassed.
Was I that bad? Luckily my gaze drifted to the clock. I was almost late for work.
“Can we talk about this later, I don’t want to lose my job” I didn't wait for her reply before rushing into the bathroom.
Today was my first day at Eclipse media. Everything I had done academically was with that place in mind. It was owned by William’s father, Alpha Thomas but managed by an acting CEO since he was busy with Alpha duties.
**********
I got off the bus and held my bag tightly as I made my way into the office, thankfully I had gotten a little strength back. A sense of pride washed over me as I walked towards the receptionist table. I hoped my parents would be proud of me. I was heartbroken over William but hopefully working here would be too time indulging to let me think about him.
“Hi, I’m Regina Thornton” I told the kind looking receptionist.
“Oh. We’ve been expecting you Miss Thornton. You’re to start as the CEO’s personal assistant”
“But that isn’t the job I was called in for” I had been told that I was to join the marketing department.
“Alpha Thomas, thought that this way you could learn about the company, he said you could do this for a couple of months before moving to a specific department. I guess he was too busy to tell you himself”
“Oh” I nodded my head in understanding.
“I'm sure you know the office already. Here you go” she handed me my appointment letter and a key. As I got into the elevator, I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed at the change of my position. This wasn't the first time the alpha had stepped in to change something in my life without my permission.
Ever since my parents died and Alpha Thomas took me in, it sometimes felt like I was living for them and not myself. I had to be groomed to work in this company since none of his children were interested. was never asked if I was interested, I was just expected to be and somehow I was or I think I was. I've never really had the chance to think about what I really want.
My knuckles met the door in a gentle collision. I did this twice before twisting the door knob and pushing the door open. My feet halted abruptly, as if rooted to the spot, as I caught sight of the CEO sitting behind the imposing mahogany desk. My eyes locked onto his, and for a moment, I contemplated running out of the office but I couldn't.
What was he even doing here?
His eyes opened wide for a short second as he stared at me, his dark orbs filled with confusion and then he shook his head as realization set in.
“Don't tell me you're my assistant,” William said with obvious disgust.
Taking in a deep breath. I took a step forward and placed my appointment letter at his table.
“I'm here to be your new personal assistant” the words rolled off my tongue easily since nothing else could come to mind. I hated where I stood. I hated that he was my boss. More than anything though, I hated him for breaking my heart.
His hands swept my papers off his desk instantly.
“You can't be my assistant” he stated with no mince in his words or eyes.
“Trust me. I also don't want this job but this is what Alpha Thomas assigned to me” I explained as I bent down to pick up my papers.
“Quit” his voice echoed the order through the room.
“What?”
“Write your resignation letter and hand it in before the end of the day”
“You can't possibly be serious,” I murmured under my breath. First he rejected me and now he wanted me to leave my job. When was it going to end?
His eyes flashed red as he clasped his hands together on his desk.
“I'm dead serious Gina. If you decide to stay in this office. I promise you would hate every single minute that you are here”
Something in the pit of my stomach told me that he was not bluffing.
“Willi…” I started to say but my words got caught up as the office door swung open and a majestic being walked through the door.
My jaw almost dropped as the most beautiful woman I've ever seen walked past me and towards William, her blonde hair managed to sway perfectly despite there being no wind in the office. She had on a silver sparkly short gown that hugged her body at the right corners showcasing her amazing bodice. I unintentionally looked down at myself, I was spotting a b cup. Next to this lady, I looked like a pencil.
“Darling” the woman called out slowly as she wrapped her hands around William’s face and planted her lips on his, his hand encircled her waist as he pulled her towards his body. His eyes met mine and stayed on them as he kissed the woman passionately. He was taunting me.
A tear dropped from my eyes as my heart constricted within itself. It felt hard to breathe. My hand clutched my chest as I battled with the inner turmoil of watching my mate kiss this woman.
I couldn't just stand and watch them, I had to leave. I didn't care if he hadn't briefed me on my job description. All I needed was to breathe and I knew I couldn't with the two of them in front of me. I held my bag tightly and walked out of his office.
As my hand left the door knob after closing the door to his office, my knees gave in and I slumped to the ground. I knew where I was, I knew anyone could walk past and see me but I couldn’t help it.
A tear fell from my eyes and another until my face was filled with tears. My legs had lost the ability to walk and the only thing I could feel was a sharpening pain in my chest. My breathing increased despite my trying to breathe evenly.
Why was I crying?
He had already rejected me? He had let me know he didn’t care for our connection, but it still hurt no matter how hard I tried, I felt the pain deep within me.
Was this woman the reason he had rejected me?
Couldn't he have asked me to leave the office before kissing her?
Maybe quitting wasn't such a bad idea.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder and a deep baritone voice followed after.
“Are you okay?”
I sucked in a breath at the question and began wiping at my tears.
“I'm fine” I responded without looking at the owner of the deep masculine voice.
“You don't look fine” the voice said again. This time I had to look at him, my breath stopped for a half second as my eyes met his. He stood over an inch taller than me with the kind of body build that could make any girl feel safe. His blonde hair blended perfectly with his pair of blue eyes that looked at me with so much concern, one would think that we knew each other.
I wiped at my eyes again, suddenly feeling conscious of looking a mess in front of this stranger. It wasn't just his aura. It was his scent. He had a scent that was messing with my senses. If I didn't know that William was my mate, I would've thought that this stranger was.
“Here” he reached into the pocket of his blazer and pulled out a handkerchief. His eyes didn't leave mine as he stretched it towards me.
“Thank you” a low growl escaped Livvy as my fingers grazed his palms.
What was happening?
Before anything more could happen, he gave me a curt nod and walked away leaving me to grasp unto the last of his scent.
I didn't even catch his name!
******
I stood over the sink in the restroom and splashed water on my face. It had been over thirty minutes and that woman still had not left Williams office. My face scrunched up in disgust and annoyance as I wondered what they could be doing inside there.
He was kissing her with the same lips he had used to kiss me last night.
Another tear fell from my eyes and I wiped it away. I didn’t like crying but I couldn't help it. The guy I was in love with, turned out to be my mate but still didn't want me.
*Ding* my message notification popped up on my phone. A message from William.
*Meet me in the parking lot* the text read.
Chapter 3 — I Don't Have A Mate
Gina's P.O.V
A smile made its way to my lips as I reread the text. Maybe he had realized how wrong he was for rejecting me and wanted to apologize. With a hopeful mind I sauntered out of the bathroom and made my way to the parking lot.
There he was, standing by his car, his black hair fell perfectly at the sides of his face, framing his face in all the right angles. His beautiful brown eyes looked intensely at his phone. Last night he had stared at me with that much intensity, I hoped it wasn't the last time.
“Hey” I called out to announce my presence expecting him to look up at me with regret and a sense of apology but all I got was just an acknowledgement of my presence.
My hands instinctively joined each other behind my back. This was it, he was going to apologize for rejecting me, he was going to apologize for kissing that woman. I was going to forgive him and then he was going to kiss me and take me in his arms because that was where I belonged.
“My parents called for a meeting and requested your presence” he stated and unlocked his car.
“Was that why you called me?” I couldn't help but ask. Where was my apology? Where was the regret?
“Yes. Why else would I have called you here?”
“Maybe to apologize for the show I had to watch in your office. I am your mate William. How could you kiss that woman in front of me?”
His eyes arched in question of my sanity as he took a step toward me, I shuddered from the proximity. His brown orbs grew a bit darker as he bent to my level.
“I rejected you” he reminded me “There is nothing between us. The earlier you accept that, the better it would be for you”
My eyes shut on impulse as a tear fell out. No. I wasn't going to let him see my tears. I wiped it away and moved back, his scent was clouding my thoughts. How was it possible that I was mad at him and still wanted him to love me at the same time? He was breaking my heart with every chance, why then did I still feel attracted to him? Why did the goddess do this to me?
“Get into the car” his voice went low as he turned towards his car and got into the driver's seat.
His parents' house was at least a ten minute drive. I didn't think I was ready to be alone in a closed space with him after everything that happened in the past twenty four hours
“No. I'll take a cab” I quickly responded.
“Get into the car now, Regina” his tone left no room for refusal and I found myself climbing into the passenger seat of his black Tesla.
*********
The silence in the Alpha’s sitting room was loud as everyone waited for the Alpha to speak. Alpha Thomas sat beside his wife, Luna Anne in his sitting room. William sat beside his mother and I sat next to Audrey.
“The reason I called for this meeting is to announce that yesterday, William finally agreed to be engaged to the only daughter of the Tetratemo Pack, Stella” Alpha Thomas began.
It felt like a slap to my face.
Wait! If he agreed to the engagement last night that only meant that he slept with me knowing he was going to reject me.
He used me…
“Is she his mate?” Audrey asked curiously from my side.
Luna Anne shook her head in reply.
“No. He doesn't have a mate” she turned to him with a raised eyebrow.
“You still haven't found your mate right?” His mother asked him.
Williams eyes crossed mine for a brief second before stopping at his mother's
“I wasn't given a mate. Marrying Stella is what's best”
“It doesn't matter, some of us are not entitled to mates” Alpha Thomas stated. The Luna was not his mate after all. He never found his mate and always believed William wouldn't get one too but he did.
I'm his mate.
“Do you love Stella?” the words left my mouth before I could stop them.
William made sure to not break eye contact as he said the words that shattered any little hope I had left.
“I do”
My heart cracked at his words. He made it sound so easy to dismiss that we were mates. He was lying to his family about not having a mate, but I believed that he was also lying about loving Stella.
Stella was probably the woman he kissed at his office. She was gorgeous. Why wouldn’t he choose her over me? She was the heir to the Tetratemo pack, an alliance with them would surely do our pack good.
“We have something we'd like to ask of you” Luna Anne’s voice cut through my thoughts.
“What's that?” I asked silently, trying my best not to show the hurt in my voice.
Alpha Thomas leaned forward and folded his hands on his knees.
“The pack recently suffered a loss in finances after we lost our alliance with the greenwood pack. So we need to form a strong alliance with the South Rare Gem pack”
This was the first time that the Alpha was discussing pack matters with me but I didn't understand how it concerned me.
“What do you want me to do Alpha?”
“They have a son that has no mate, we were hoping you two would make a perfect match. We want you to get married to Nathan North”
My jaw dropped instantly at the request.
“What?”
“We already discussed this with his family and they are more than happy to form this alliance. You still don't have a mate right?”
Instinctively, I looked at William. He had denied me, so why not.
“No I don't have a mate” I said with a straight face, his eyes twitched a little and I swear I saw him form a fist but he composed himself quickly.
“Then it's settled. You will meet Nathan North and if all goes well, the two of you will be engaged before the next five full moons”
********
“You're not really going to go through with this engagement right?” William asked me once I got into his car to go back to the office.
“What does it matter? I have no mate. I might as well get married and help the pack” I replied, trying to fix my seatbelt.
He turned to me, his eyes full of an emotion I couldn’t read. Swiftly, he grabbed my arm and pulled me towards him.
“You have a mate” he said, his eyes boring into mine.
My chest rose with each breath I let out. What was he saying? I swallowed hard and met his gaze despite the fast beating of my heart.
“Who is my mate?”
“Me”
