Chapter 1 — So Elena Wants Damien?

The crystal chandelier made the whole hall glow with golden radiance.
Elena Ashford opened her eyes to banners embroidered with silver wolf crests, nobles murmuring amid clinking glasses, and the smell of roasted venison drifting through the air.
She stood in the middle of the great hall, her eyes trembling.
Did I... come back?
She scanned the room fast. The long tables were packed with Silvermoon City's most powerful bloodlines and pack leaders. Gold cutlery glinted under the lights as servants slipped through the crowd, pouring deep red wine.
"Tell me who you want as your mate," Arthur Blackwood, the Alpha King, said. "Don't be shy."
His voice rolled down from the raised platform. It was deep and commanding, but warm. The kind of tone an elder uses with a kid.
This was the banquet the royal court threw for her seventeenth birthday. Arthur had summoned her himself and promised to choose her permanent mate personally.
Elena opened her mouth, but her throat went tight. Bitterness surged up from somewhere deep behind her eyes.
"Relax, kid," Arthur said, his tone gentler now. "The Ashford family has guarded our borders for generations. Your father, your uncles, your brothers, all of them died fighting the northern vampires. Now you're the last Ashford left. I'll handle your marriage myself. Whoever you want, I'll make it happen."
Even after living through it all once before, hearing her pack's name still felt like claws tearing into her chest.
The Blackwood family had ruled the Werewolf Alliance for about a hundred years, and their hold remained precarious. Vampires kept pressing in from the north, while human hunter groups lurked in the south.
Last autumn, the northern vampires launched a full invasion, and the Ashford family was ordered to lead their wolves north and push them back.
The morning they left, her father had ruffled her hair. Her oldest brother had shoved his favorite dagger into her hands and told her to keep it safe. Her second and third brothers were bickering behind him. Her uncles had stood on the porch, laughing and yelling at everyone to hurry up. They'd said they'd be back as soon as the fighting was done.
She remembered thinking they were being so loud.
The next time she saw them, they came back as bodies. Some faces were too destroyed to recognize, and the only way to identify them was by the scraps of family crests still clinging to their uniforms.
Some of the wives went back to their birth packs. Others remarried into different packs. Her mother sank into grief and died quietly on a snowy night earlier that year.
The huge Ashford Estate really only had her left now.
Arthur had put on this banquet as a simple family gathering. In truth, he meant to publicly name Elena's permanent mate and pay tribute to the Ashford dead.
A light laugh came from her right.
"Why even ask, Father?"
It was Victoria Blackwood, the princess and the Alpha King and Luna Queen's favorite daughter. She propped her chin on her hand and flashed a teasing grin. "Everyone knows Elena's got it bad for Damien. Like, painfully obvious."
Damien Blackwood was the Alpha King's oldest son, a pure-blood Alpha, and the heir to the throne.
In her past life, Victoria had said the exact same thing, and Elena had just blushed and stared at the floor.
Arthur had taken one look at her and announced her engagement to Damien on the spot.
Elena threw herself into planning the wedding. She sewed her own dress, stitching through the night until her fingertips were covered in needle holes.
An elderly maid had told her that a bride who made her own gown would be blessed with a happy marriage.
But on their wedding night, Damien refused to mark her. He wouldn't even let her sleep in the bed.
She curled up on the cold stone floor and listened to wolves howling outside all night long. No mark. No bond. She was Damien's mate in name only. She meant nothing.
The Alpha King and Luna Queen went from sympathy to disappointment to just shaking their heads in silence.
The servants at the Crown Prince's palace took their cue, and no one treated her like a real Luna. She spent four years being humiliated in that place.
Then one day, she passed by the study and overheard Damien talking to his best friend.
He knew about everything she'd suffered. All the crap she'd swallowed. It wasn't that he didn't know. He just didn't give a d*mn. Or maybe he'd greenlit all of it.
She heard his voice clear and cold.
"She forced this marriage. She's getting what she deserves."
His friend asked if he really felt nothing. "Elena is your fated mate. She is gorgeous. She is crazy about you. Doesn't any of that matter?"
Damien's answer had zero warmth.
"She makes me sick."
At that moment, Elena felt all her senses just shut down.
Forced? How did I force anything? It was his father's order. Arthur's command. If he hated it so much, why didn't he refuse his father to his face? Why turn around and punish me instead?
The whole thing was a joke. Arthur got to look good for taking care of a war hero's orphan. Damien won his father's approval. She was the only one who got scr*wed.
She asked Damien to break the bond. The guy who always looked at her like she was nothing suddenly snapped. He grabbed a glass cup and hurled it at her head.
Elena didn't dodge. The rim caught her temple, and blood started dripping down over her eyebrow.
Damien froze for a second, leaning forward like he might actually come closer. Then he just sat back down, his jaw tight.
"You don't need to play the victim."
He refused to break the bond. For days, he wouldn't say a single word to her.
Then something shifted, and he finally agreed.
The night before she left the palace, Elena looked around and realized she felt nothing for the place. There wasn't a single thing she wanted to take with her.
The woman in the mirror looked pale and gaunt. She'd married at seventeen, and in four years, she'd been worn down to skin and bones.
She fell into a haze and slept. Then she opened her eyes again to the glittering lights of the banquet hall, the embroidered wolf crests, and the sounds of her seventeenth birthday party.
"So Elena wants Damien?" Arthur looked over at her, thoughtful.
"Yes!" Victoria launched into a list of Elena's "greatest hits", her voice bright and chatty. "She's always baking for him, and she does it all herself. One time, she burned her hand pretty bad but kept saying it was nothing. Of course, I'm the one who ends up eating most of those desserts."
She kept going, "Oh, and a while back, Damien lost his favorite brooch and was in a foul mood. Elena tracked me down to ask what kind of style he liked because she wanted to make him a new one."
Elena felt Damien's eyes on her. She didn't need to look up to know he was frowning. Same disgust as last time.
All the guests were staring at her now. Some were curious, some were clearly waiting to watch her crash and burn. Everyone wanted a cute story or a good laugh.
In her past life, she would've been mortified. But now?
What's the worst that could happen? Getting humiliated again? Could it really be worse than last time?
Arthur laughed, "Elena really does care for him. I suppose that makes sense. You grew up together. In that case, I'll announce—"
"Your Majesty," Elena cut in.
Her voice wasn't loud, but it sliced through his words cleanly.
The whole hall went quiet for a beat.
Arthur looked at her, his smile stiffening.
Elena took a deep breath. She didn't look at Damien. Not once.
She bowed low and spoke clearly, her voice steady.
"I grew up with Crown Prince Damien. I respect him like an older brother. I've never had romantic feelings for him."
The hall went dead silent. Dozens of eyes along the long tables went wide, and Victoria's hand froze mid-air with her wine glass.
Arthur's expression slowly faded into something unreadable.
"Are you serious?"
Elena knew Arthur was dead set on marrying her off tonight. If she didn't give him a name, he wouldn't let it go.
She stayed bowed, her forehead nearly touching the ground, and said each word carefully.
"I've looked up to Alpha Alaric Blackwood for so long. Marrying him would be everything I could ever want."

Chapter 2 — She's Gonna Regret This So Bad

The hall erupted. Noble werewolves all wore stunned expressions.
"Alpha Alaric?" someone blurted.
"She actually wants to marry him..."
"Why him? Marrying the Crown Prince would've been way better."
"Does she not know what happened to Alaric?"
Whispers crashed over her like a wave. Elena heard every word. Werewolf hearing was too acute, and every syllable pierced her ears.
Arthur sat on his throne, his eyes narrowing slightly. His voice carried a rare gentleness. "This might be too hard on you. Let me pick someone from the other royal bloodlines instead."
Elena knelt on one knee on the cold stone floor, her back straight as a blade.
"I'm grateful for Your Majesty's kindness, but I already made a vow before the Moon Goddess' altar. In this life, it has to be Alpha Alaric. No one else." She paused, her voice clear and firm. "Please grant my wish."
The hall fell into dead silence again.
Alaric Blackwood was Arthur's half-brother.
Back when Arthur was just another Alpha fighting his brothers for the throne, Alaric had thrown himself in front of him again and again, risking his life to push him onto that throne.
After that, he'd fought wars on every front, crushed rogue factions, driven out southern vampires, and expanded the alliance's territory. He'd built his own Ironblood Pack and turned it into the strongest pack in the alliance, and Arthur had named him a Duke.
Then, last year, while fighting vampires on the northwest border, Alaric had suddenly collapsed into a deep coma.
He was still lying in his estate on Ironblood territory with no sign of waking up.
The best healer in the court had examined him and shaken his head. He'd said this might be it.
Elena knew all of this. She also knew something else. In her past life, Alaric woke up three years after she married Damien.
That year had been brutal for her. She never got pregnant, so Vivienne Blackwood, the Luna Queen, had Damien take another Luna named Stella.
Compared to Elena, Stella got all of Damien's attention, and everyone in the palace treated Stella like she mattered.
Once, Damien took both of them to a royal hunt in the Misty Forest outside the city. On the way back, Stella deliberately left without Elena, her carriage speeding off.
The road home was long, and a storm came crashing down. Elena couldn't shift, and walking back on foot would take hours.
She tried asking other nobles for a ride, but everyone knew Damien couldn't stand her, and no one wanted to cross him. They all drove right past her, eyes averted.
She was about to give up hope when a voice came from behind her. It was weak, but unexpectedly warm.
"Take my carriage back to the city."
Elena spun around.
Alaric sat in a carriage, wrapped in a loose black coat. His face was pale and thin, his cheekbones harshly defined. When he saw her stunned expression, his lips curved up just a little.
"Thank you..."
The second she spoke, tears started spilling down her cheeks.
She couldn't understand it. Why did everyone treat her like dirt? What had she done wrong? She just didn't have anyone left to back her up. Her family had all died on the northern front, sacrificing themselves for every wolf in Silvermoon City.
All the pain she'd buried for so long just cracked open in front of Alaric.
He sighed, pulled a handkerchief from inside his coat, and handed it to her.
She cried for a long time, and he just sat there quietly beside her the whole time.
After that, she never saw him again, but she never forgot it.
On the platform, Arthur frowned in silence.
Beside him, Vivienne spoke up, her timing perfect, "Since the Ashford girl is so set on marrying Alaric, why not grant her wish?"
Arthur looked at Vivienne, then at the girl kneeling below him. Finally, he nodded.
"Fine." He frowned. "You're the last of your line, and Alaric is still unconscious. The court will handle the bonding ceremony."
Elena bowed her head again. "Thank you, Your Majesty."
She didn't want to marry Damien again and repeat the same nightmare. Alaric was the best choice.
First, since he was in a coma, she could use this time to build a real escape route for herself. She needed to take control of the Ashford family's assets, connections, and the old soldiers her father and brothers had left behind, piece by piece.
Second, in her past life, even though Alaric eventually woke up, no one had taken proper care of him. His legs were completely wrecked. He couldn't even run after shifting and spent the rest of his life stuck in a wheelchair.
Alaric had shown her a rare kindness, so she was willing to take care of him when he was at his lowest and at least help him walk again.
When he woke up, she'd talk to him about breaking the bond. She figured he didn't want to marry her anyway.
Back when her father and brothers were still alive, she'd heard them mention that Alaric probably had someone he loved. No one knew who it was.
On the other side of the hall, Damien sat at the far end of the long table, his knuckles white around his wine glass.
He stared at Elena as she said she wanted to marry Alaric.
A tight, unexplainable knot formed in his chest, like someone had squeezed it in a fist. It was just irritation—he couldn't even say why.
"Marry Alaric? Elena's so stupid..." Victoria muttered beside him, her voice dripping with satisfaction at someone else's misery.
Damien didn't answer. His frown deepened.
Victoria tilted her head at him, clearly hoping for a reaction. "Damien, you know what? Give it a few days. She's gonna regret this so bad."
Damien said coldly, "None of my business."
*****
After the banquet, Elena went back to the Ashford Estate.
She pushed open the iron gate, walked through the ivy-covered hallway, and finally returned to her old bedroom. She collapsed on the bed and closed her eyes.
Don't have to marry Damien. Finally home.
She slept soundly for days, letting her energy build back up.
Then Margaret Thornton, Vivienne's senior maid, showed up at the estate and spoke to her gently, "His Majesty entrusted your wedding to Queen Vivienne. She's been preparing everything carefully. Today we need to set the date, so she's invited you to the palace to choose together."
Elena didn't really want to go. "I don't know much about wedding dates. The Queen can just pick a good date. I'm fine with anything."
Margaret smiled. "Ms. Ashford, you really should come. The Luna Queen also said she hasn't seen you in a while and wants to have a private chat."
What kind of private chat can I have with Queen Vivienne? In both lives, that woman has never liked me.
But Margaret's tone was sincere, and Elena couldn't say no.
She got to the palace in the evening. The setting sun painted the stone roads gold, and it was so beautiful it didn't even look real.
Elena kept her eyes down as she walked through that golden light.
"Your Highness," Margaret said suddenly, stopping to bow.
Elena froze, then looked up.
Damien's handsome, cold face was suddenly right there. He was tall, his black trench coat collar turned up, watching her without a word. His brows were lowered, his eyes full of cold judgment. The stare hit her like an adult Alpha's dominance pressing down.
Elena's breath caught for a second. She lowered her head quickly and gave a distant curtsy. "Your Highness."
Damien frowned, annoyed. He knew Elena had a thing for him.
She used to find out when he'd be visiting his mother, bake something, and show up on his path like it was a coincidence, all just to hand him those treats.
He never even looked at them. He'd either toss them or give them to the servants.
But today, she wasn't carrying any food. She was just trying to see him.
The way she'd sworn at the banquet that she didn't like him and insisted on marrying Alaric, she was probably regretting it now, and this distant act was on purpose.
He clicked his tongue, his eyes narrowing. His voice was low and casual. "Elena, is this fun for you?"

Chapter 3 — Is She That Eager to Get Married?

Elena blinked, confused. She didn't really get what he meant. "What are you talking about?"
"Since you already announced in front of the whole court that you're marrying Uncle Alaric, stop hanging around me." Damien's voice was cold, and annoyance churned in his eyes. "This whole obsessive game just makes me sick."
Elena paused. She realized he'd misunderstood something.
In her past life, there had been a million moments like this. She'd known she needed to explain, but the words always got stuck. She was too scared of saying the wrong thing, too scared of making him hate her more.
But now? Who cares what he thinks?
She pressed her lips together, and her voice came out so calm it surprised her. "I'm not trying to hang around you. At the banquet, I made it very clear to the Alpha King that I have no feelings for you."
Damien raised an eyebrow. "Oh, really? So today you just happened to get lost in the palace, happened to end up in this hallway, and happened to run into me?"
Elena explained, "Your Highness, the Luna Queen summoned me today. If you don't believe me, surely you trust Margaret?"
Damien paused and looked at the older woman.
Margaret had served Vivienne for over thirty years, the longest of any maid in the court. She gave an apologetic smile and spoke respectfully, "Your Highness, Ms. Ashford was indeed personally summoned by the Luna Queen."
There was no way Elena could have bribed Margaret. So she really hadn't come for him today.
Damien frowned, and a strange, unexplainable irritation spread through his chest.
Elena didn't give him time to react. "I'm about to bond with Alpha Alaric. The Luna Queen invited me today to set the wedding date. If you still don't believe me, why don't you go in and ask her yourself?"
After saying that, Elena felt a wave of relief she'd never felt before. Even her breathing got easier.
Damien's face darkened. He stared straight at her, his eyes narrowing, and his voice dropped low. "Uncle Alaric was hit by a curse. He's still unconscious. The court healers say he might never wake up. If you marry him, you'll be stuck with a living corpse for the rest of your life."
Elena scoffed inwardly.
In my past life, marrying you wasn't much better. I was stuck alone until I died.
She kept her face composed and even gave a faint smile. "Thank you for your concern, Your Highness. But like I said that day, I've admired Alpha Alaric for a long time. As long as I can be by his side, whether he's awake or in a coma, I'm happy."
Damien's jaw tightened so hard it looked like it might snap.
Elena stopped looking at him. She turned and nodded at Margaret. "Let's go. Don't keep the Luna Queen waiting."
Her figure disappeared at the end of the hallway.
Damien stood there, completely still.
A face suddenly flashed through his mind. Not the distant, calm Elena from today. But the girl from long ago—eyes downcast, cheeks pink, voice soft and quiet. "I'm so happy I get to marry you..."
But the image shattered in an instant. It faded away, leaving nothing behind.
A sharp ache shot through his chest. Something important—something he could never get back—was slipping away from him, quickly.
*****
In Vivienne's private living room, the fireplace blazed.
As soon as she saw Elena come in, Vivienne put on a kind smile. It was proper and polite, but didn't feel genuine.
"Elena, you're finally here. Come, sit by me." She reached out and waved.
Elena didn't go to her right away. First, she performed a perfect, formal court curtsy. Her posture was respectful, every detail just right. "Greetings, Luna Queen."
Vivienne kept smiling. "You always have such good manners. Why did you come in alone?"
Elena knew she was asking why Damien hadn't come with her. She played dumb and added a hint of sadness to her voice. "The Ashford family only has me left now. There's no one else to come with me."
Vivienne's eyes flickered. "Alright, let's not talk about sad things. Come, look at the dates."
On the table lay a piece of parchment with two dates neatly written in ink: May 5th and September 10th.
September 10th was the day Elena had bonded with Damien in her past life.
It had been deemed a lucky day, but it stormed all day, and the whole ceremony was a mess. Later, rumors spread through the court that Elena was cursed. People said her family had been killed because of her bad luck, and that she would bring disaster to the Blackwood bloodline too.
"In my opinion, September 10th is the safest choice," Vivienne said, tapping that date. "Why don't we set it for then?"
"Thank you, Luna Queen," Elena smiled gently but firmly. "But I think May 5th is better."
"But it's already April. Wouldn't May be too rushed?"
"It is a bit rushed, but I want to marry Alaric as soon as possible." As she said this, Elena lowered her head at just the right moment, her lashes fluttering, showing a hint of shyness.
Damien walked into the living room just then—and heard every single word clearly.
His steps faltered, and his jaw clenched on its own.
Is she that eager to get married?
"Damien's here too," Vivienne smiled. "Perfect. Elena wants May 5th, but that's way too rushed. September is better. You help convince her. She's always listened to you since you were kids."
Damien glanced at Elena, his voice cold and hard. "If she's in such a hurry to marry Uncle Alaric, why should we get in the way? If we actually wait until September, she'll probably badmouth the Blackwood family behind our backs for dragging our feet."
The comment was sharp, almost barbed, and everyone expected Elena to look embarrassed.
Instead, she arched an eyebrow and smiled brightly, "You're right, Your Highness. Then you'll have to come to the ceremony on May 5th."
Damien's eyes narrowed sharply, something dangerous flickering in his gaze. He glanced at Vivienne. "I have things to do. I'm leaving."
Vivienne said, "Alright. Don't work too late. Get some rest."
He grunted indifferently and left.
Elena was about to say goodbye too, when Vivienne suddenly spoke again, "Oh, Elena."
Elena turned back.
"You know Alaric is still unconscious. He probably won't be able to go to the Moon Temple for the bonding ceremony. Also, your father and brothers are gone, so you don't have any family to escort you there. According to court rules, we need to choose an unmated male from the royal family to stand in for Alaric during the ceremony." Vivienne tilted her head slightly, as if just mentioning it casually. "I was thinking, why not have Damien do it?"
Elena shook her head almost instinctively. "He is very busy. I wouldn't want to trouble him. Why don't you choose someone else from the royal family?" She paused and quickly offered an alternative. "Sebastian would be perfect. He hasn't marked a mate yet. He just turned twenty, so he's an adult."
Let Damien stand in for Alaric during the bonding ceremony? He'd probably say something awful during it.
Vivienne nodded. "Alright then."
On the carriage ride back to the Ashford Estate, Elena leaned against the window and thought about when she was little.
Her grandfather had been Damien's combat teacher, showing him how to fight in wolf form. Back then, Elena always followed her grandfather around the palace and grew up with Damien. They used to tell each other everything and always sneak over the palace walls to play in the streets.
In her past life, not long after she got engaged to Damien, they ran into a feral rogue wolf on the street. Elena pushed Damien out of the way and saved him, but the rogue tackled her and bit her over and over. Her pure blood got contaminated. She searched all of Silvermoon City for healers, but no one could fully cleanse her blood. After that, she could never awaken her wolf spirit or shift into a wolf again.
Damien had been panicked, sweating, holding her hand. His eyes were full of fear. "I'll take responsibility for you. I promise."
He'd said those words. When did he break that promise? Elena couldn't remember.
In her past life, she'd cried silently about this late at night, soaking her pillow over and over. She cried so much her eyes got blurry. When the light was low, she couldn't see clearly anymore.
Living again, Elena decided she wouldn't be so stupidly giving anymore.
Luckily, that hadn't happened yet. Her blood wasn't contaminated. In one more year, on the full moon night, she'd be able to awaken her wolf like everyone else.
*****
The wedding date was approaching, and the whole palace, the Ironblood Pack, and the Ashford Pack were all preparing in a flurry.
Damien lived in the Crown Prince's palace. Every day when he opened his door, he saw servants carrying all kinds of wedding supplies.
After several days of feeling restless, he got up and walked out of the palace to clear his head.
But he ran into someone: his cousin Sebastian Blackwood, the eldest son of his uncle William Blackwood.
Damien saw him in the study and casually asked, "Did you come to the palace for something?"
Sebastian's eyes were unusually bright, and his voice was full of barely hidden excitement. "It's about Uncle Alaric's wedding. The Luna Queen needs to pick someone from the royal family to stand in for him during the bonding ceremony!"
