Chapter 1

Katherine's POV
"Who's your daddy?" he asked while he moaned, sinking his dick in and out of me. I resisted the urge to sigh, feeling bored.
I tried to fake a moan, hoping to mirror his excitement, but I was unsuccessful. His hands moved over my body with a sense of urgency and possession, as if he believed he had a right to it, but each touch felt commonplace. I looked in the direction of the faint morning light shining in through the curtains, while his language became dirtier and more demanding.
"No one can rock your world like I do baby. This pussy belongs to me. Only I can hit it right.’’
“Yes Alpha Wendell.’’ I answered with a fake smile, trying not to sound bored. Three years of terrible sex, engaged to a man I did not love. Today, we will finally get married.
“I’ll make you a mommy, baby. You’ll carry our pups.’’ He rambled on, his pace increasing more and more. While he aimed at dominating me, all he ended up doing was annoying me. Everyday, I prayed to the moon goddess to tie my womb. I didn’t want to get pregnant for him.
I released a slight sound of agreement, almost a nod, but couldn't find the words to respond. He failed to notice as he was too engrossed in himself, consumed by his own enjoyment, ignoring my distracted thoughts.
He let out a louder groan, holding my waist tighter as he hit his climax, shaking with a long moan. He whispered, out of breath and gasping, "Say it, I’m your daddy. No one can make you feel like I do.’’
I forced a smile and quietly said, "Yes."
“Say it,” he murmured, breathless and panting. “Say I’m going to be a father.”
I plastered on a smile and whispered, “Yes. This time for sure.”
Inside, I felt a familiar dread. I prayed, as I did every time, that this wouldn’t be the time he succeeded.
Satisfied, he collapsed beside me, sighing heavily, his arm thrown over his eyes. He lay there a moment, his breathing slowing, until finally, he sat up, glancing over with that detached, courteous smile of his. “I’ll be getting dressed now,” he said lightly. “You’d better go get ready. Don’t want to keep our guests waiting.”
I slid out of bed, wrapped a robe around myself, and walked to my own suite. As soon as the door closed, I leaned against it, exhaling a shaky breath before heading to the bathroom. The hot water washed over me, and I let the steam rise, drowning out everything else.
I was an unmated wolf, in my culture, it was best to marry the next suitor than live life alone. Unmated wolves are sold to the highest bidder. I’m 23 now, convinced I won’t ever find my mate. So instead, I accepted my father’s offer to be married off to his friend's son, an Alpha.
It’s been three years since our engagement, all which were filled with passionless sex and attempts to make a baby. Three years ago, the moon goddess heard my prayers. I didn’t get pregnant. Finally, the day was here. I would get married to Alpha Wendal and officially become a mated woman. That ought to keep me protected.
—
The pack hall was adorned with white roses and silver ribbons, sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows. I stood at the altar in my ivory dress, my heart beating steadily as I awaited the words that would seal my fate. The pack elder's voice echoed through the hall as he performed the ceremony.
"Do you, Luna Katherine, take Alpha Wendal to be your mate, to honor and cherish, until death parts you both?"
I met Wendal's eyes, forcing a smile. "I do."
The elder turned to Wendal. "And do you, Alpha Wendal, take Luna Katherine to be your mate, to honor and cherish, until death parts you both?"
The silence stretched. One heartbeat. Two. Three.
Whispers rippled through the crowd as Wendal remained quiet, his expression unreadable. My smile faltered.
"Alpha Wendal?" the elder prompted.
"No." The word fell like a stone in still water. "I cannot."
My world tilted on its axis. "What?"
Wendal's eyes, usually warm with false affection, now held only pity. "I found my true mate this morning, thirty minutes before our wedding."
The bouquet trembled in my hands. "But... but you promised. Three years, Wendal. You said you needed time to arrange pack politics."
"I know." He straightened his shoulders. "But I cannot deny the mate bond. However, I can offer you protection. You could stay here, as part of my household staff. It would spare you from auction."
The words hit like physical blows. "Staff? You mean a slave?"
He gestured to someone in the crowd. "Marcy, come forward."
My blood turned to ice as I watched my newly hired maid rise from her seat, her face glowing with triumph. The same woman I'd given a chance to this morning, offering her work in what was supposed to be my future home.
"Katherine," Wendal's voice softened with fake kindness, "please remove the dress. It belongs to my true Luna now."
The flowers dropped from my hands. I couldn't breathe. The whispers started, growing louder until they filled my ears. Three years. Three fucking years of my life, and this was how it ended.
I backed away from the altar. My dress caught under my heel and I stumbled. Someone laughed. I wanted to scream, to shift, to tear through everyone in this damn hall - but instead, I ran.
I pushed through the heavy doors and kept running. My heels were slowing me down, so I kicked them off. Fuck the dress too - it caught and ripped on everything I passed, but I didn't care. Let it get destroyed. Let it get ruined like everything else.
My feet hit the ground hard as I ran past the pack houses. People stared through their windows. Let them stare. Let them see what their Alpha had done. My hair came loose, my makeup was probably running down my face, but none of it mattered anymore.
I ran until my chest burned. Until my legs shook. Until I couldn't see through my tears. Someone was calling my name from behind me, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop.
I didn't realize I'd reached the pack borders until I felt the wards buzz against my skin as I crossed them. The human road stretched out ahead of me, empty and dark. My bare feet slapped against the cold asphalt.
I heard the car before I saw it. By the time I turned my head, the headlights were already blinding me. Tires screeched. The driver tried to swerve.
The impact knocked me off my feet. For a second, everything went quiet. Then I hit the ground, and pain exploded everywhere. I tasted blood. The last thing I saw was red spreading across my white dress.
Then everything went black.

Chapter 2

Jason’s POV
Her body trembled beneath me, skin flushed and glistening with sweat. I kept my rhythm steady, watching as Cicilia's eyes rolled back, her perfectly manicured nails digging half-moons into my shoulders. The sharp pain only heightened my focus.
"Oh goddess, yes!" she cried out, her back arching off the silk sheets. "Alpha... Jason... fuck!" Her walls clenched around me as she climaxed, but I maintained my control. Years of discipline made it second nature.
"Nobody..." she gasped between shudders, "nobody fucks me like you do. Your cock is magical, I swear." Her hands traced down my chest, trying to pull me closer. "Let me feel you finish inside me, Alpha."
I pulled out instead, ignoring her whimper of protest. "You know that's not happening, Cicilia."
She pouted, still spread across my bed like an offering. The morning light streaming through my windows caught the sheen of sweat on her skin, highlighting curves that would drive most men wild. But I'd learned long ago not to let physical attraction cloud my judgment.
"Just once," she purred, reaching for me again. "I'm on the pill. What's the worst that could happen?"
"A pregnancy claim that would force a mating bond." I grabbed my pants from the floor, already scanning for my phone. "We had an agreement. No strings, no complications."
"But we're so good together." She sat up, letting the sheet fall away from her breasts. A cheap trick that might work on my brother. "I could be such a good Luna for you, Jason. I know how to handle pack politics, how to host gatherings. I've been training for this my whole life."
"That's exactly why it won't work." I buttoned my shirt, not bothering to look at her. "You want the position more than the person."
"That's not fair!" She scrambled off the bed, grabbing her scattered clothes. "Three months we've been doing this. Don't tell me you feel nothing."
"I feel exactly what we agreed to feel - physical pleasure, nothing more." I checked my watch. Alpha Wendel would be arriving soon. "You should go. I have meetings."
"You're impossible!" She yanked her dress on, not bothering with the underwear she'd worn here. "One of these days, you'll realize what you're missing."
"Cicilia." My voice dropped lower, letting a hint of Alpha command seep through. "Don't make me regret our arrangement."
She froze, then huffed out a breath. "Fine. But don't come crawling back when you're lonely tonight."
The door slammed behind her with enough force to rattle the frames on my wall. I sighed, reaching for my phone. One message from James about some party he was heading to - deleted without reading - and three from Derrick about the morning's schedule.
"Tell me Alpha Wendel hasn't arrived yet," I said when Derrick answered my call.
My beta's laugh rumbled through the speaker. "Relax, boss. He's still twenty minutes out. Though I should warn you - your latest conquest is downstairs telling anyone who'll listen about your 'upcoming mating ceremony.'"
I groaned, heading for my private bathroom. "Why do they always do this?"
"Maybe because you're too good in bed?" Derrick's amusement was clear. "I mean, that's the rumor around the pack. The mighty Jason Stone, bringing women to their knees with his magical-"
"Finish that sentence and you're on border patrol for a month."
"You wouldn't dare. Who else would handle your paperwork?"
"I hate that you're right." I stepped into the shower, letting hot water soothe muscles tense from more than just the morning's activities. "Any other disasters I should know about?"
"Well, your brother called the pack house three times looking for you."
"Of course he did. Whatever it is can wait. Make sure the conference room is ready for Wendel. His Luna recognition ceremony is important."
"Already done. Coffee's brewing, papers are prepared, and I even got those fancy pastries you pretend not to like."
I smiled despite myself. This was why Derrick was irreplaceable - not just as a beta, but as a friend. "What would I do without you?"
"Probably starve to death at your desk buried under pack treaties." There was a pause. "Speaking of which... Jason, you know I respect you as my Alpha, but as your friend - maybe Cicilia has a point. Not about her specifically, but you need someone. The pack needs a Luna."
"The pack needs stability and strong leadership. I’m not the only Alpha they should look to blame. James is out galavanting with hookers, I’m drowning in paperwork because my twin brother decided to abandon his duty as Alpha. He was never like this. All it took was a girl in a yellow dress. I refuse to fall for the same. Romance complicates things." I shut off the water, reaching for a towel. "After what it did to James, one failed mate bond and he turned into a walking disaster. I want none of it"
"Not everyone is your brother. And not every mate bond fails."
"Can we not have this conversation again?" I pulled on my suit, checking my reflection. "I have a pack to run and treaties to maintain. Romance isn't a priority."
"Sure, boss. Whatever you say." Derrick's tone made it clear he wasn't convinced. "Conference room whenever you're ready. Though fair warning - Cicilia's still in the lobby, looking like she's planning to intercept you."
"Back entrance it is." I grabbed my phone and briefcase. "And Derrick? Thanks."
"For the pastries or the friendship?"
"Both. Now get back to work before I remember I'm supposed to be an intimidating Alpha."
His laughter followed me as I hung up.
Alpha Wendel was already waiting in my office when I arrived, a nervous energy radiating off him. Young Alphas often got this way around me - a mix of respect and fear that came with my position as Head Alpha of the Northern Territories.
"The paperwork seems to be in order," I said, scanning through the documents. Luna recognition ceremonies were usually straightforward, but they required careful attention. One wrong word could lead to political complications down the line.
"Thank you for making time for this, Head Alpha." Wendel shifted in his seat, trying and failing to appear casual. "I know it's just formality, but having your signature means a lot. Legitimacy and all that."
I nodded, turning another page. "Marriage is an important step for any Alpha. Your pack will be stronger for it."
"About that..." Wendel let out a laugh that seemed slightly forced. "Funny story, actually. I was supposed to marry someone else today."
My pen paused mid-signature. "Oh?"
"Yeah, some boring arrangement from years ago. But then I met my true mate this morning." He grinned, apparently oblivious to my sudden stillness. "The goddess works in mysterious ways, right? Better to let the other one fuck off than settle for less than-"
My phone buzzed, cutting through the tension I doubt Wendel even noticed. I ignored it.
It buzzed again. And again.
"For fuck's sake," I muttered, finally answering. "What is it, James?"
"Jason! I really fucked up! I hit someone - a woman in a wedding dress. She's bleeding everywhere! I think she's a wolf like us, I can smell it, but-"
My jaw clenched so hard I heard my teeth crack. Of course. Of fucking course my brother would manage to hit someone on his way to whatever party he was heading to this time. "Take her to Michael's clinic," I ordered, already standing. "She can't go to a human hospital if she's one of us. I'll meet you there."
I ended the call and turned to the startled Alpha waiting across my desk. "I apologize, but there's an emergency. My beta will finish processing your paperwork."
Alone in my office, I pressed my fingers to my temples, feeling a headache building. "What the hell did my brother get himself into now?"
The smell of blood and wedding flowers haunted me as I grabbed my keys. Something about this felt different. Important. Like the goddess herself was finally cashing in on all my carefully maintained control.
I just didn't know why.

Chapter 3

My tires screeched as I pulled into the hospital gates, the security guard barely jumping out of the way in time. I didn't have time for formalities - I needed to get her inside, now.
"Hey, you can't just-" the guard started, but stopped short when he got a good look at me. "Alpha James?"
"Move!" I barked, clutching the bleeding woman in my arms. She was so still, her white dress soaked with crimson. The smell of her blood and the floral scent of her perfume twisted my gut.
"R-right away, sir!" The guard scrambled to open the gates, eyes wide. "Dr. Michael is-"
I didn't wait for him to finish, barreling through the entrance and into the lobby. The underground hospital was bustling, wolves of all ages darting between exam rooms and surgical suites. But I had eyes only for the familiar figure rushing towards me.
"Michael!" I called, my voice cracking. "You have to help her, please!"
Michael took one look at the woman and immediately snapped into doctor mode. "Get her to the OR, now!" He gestured to the nearby orderlies. "Type and cross, we need two units ASAP! And page Dr. Wilkins, tell her we have a critical trauma patient inbound."
The bustle of activity was dizzying as they wheeled her away. I tried to follow, but Michael put a hand on my chest, stopping me. "Stay here. Let us work."
"But-"
"James." His voice softened, brown eyes filled with concern. "Trust me. I'll do everything I can."
With one last fleeting glance at the woman, I let them take her. My legs felt shaky as I sank into the nearest chair, head in my hands.
Amelia sidled up next to me, draping herself across my lap. "Jaaamess, what's going on? Why are you so tense?" Her fingers traced lazy patterns on my chest. "I thought we were going to have fun tonight."
I gently pushed her off, guilt churning in my gut. I shouldn't have brought Amelia with me. She was the last thing on my mind right now.
The woman's still, pale face haunted me. Why had she been out there alone, in a wedding dress of all things? Where was her mate, her pack? Rage boiled in my veins at the thought of her being abandoned. No one deserved that kind of pain.
It reminded me too much of my own loss. Three years ago, I'd been just like this woman - ready to get married, ready to pledge my life to the woman I loved. And then, in an instant, she was gone. Ripped from me in a senseless accident, the driver fleeing the scene and leaving her to bleed out on the road.
I'd been devastated, shattered beyond repair. For months, I couldn't even bring myself to shift, the wolf inside me howling with anguish. The pack had tried to help, to console me, but nothing could fill the gaping hole in my chest. Not even Amelia and our casual arrangement.
Now, seeing this woman so close to death, my wolf stirred restlessly. It wanted to protect her, to keep her safe. I didn't understand the pull, the need to be by her side. Was it because she reminded me of my lost mate? Or was there something more?
The elevator doors opened and I looked up, hope flaring in my chest. But it was only Jason, striding through the lobby with his usual air of cool detachment. I braced myself for the impending lecture.
"What the hell were you thinking, James?" He demanded, storming over. "Driving while intoxicated? I thought you were done with that reckless bullshit."
"I wasn't drunk!" I shot back, hackles rising. "She just came out of nowhere, Jason. I couldn't stop in time."
“Typical of you brother, expecting others to clean up your messes.’’
“Just shut up Jason. She’s going to make it. She can’t die because of me.’’
“Why? Because your mate died just like this and maybe it means you’ve become the very person you hate the most.’’ His words felt like knives in my chest. I clenched my fist,my wolf wanted to come out. To shut my brother up.
“Take that back right now!’’ I demanded, getting in his face, “I am nothing like that coward. He hit her and left her behind to bleed out. I took her and brought her here.’’
“Well congratulations brother, you’re now a decent wolf. What’s the next miracle? Will you start acting like a true Alpha instead of drinking all the liquor and hosting stupid parties?”
"Enough!" We both turned at Michael's sharp bark. He strode towards us, surgical scrubs stained with blood. "This is a hospital, in case you two morons forgot. Keep your pissing contest outside."
Jason's lips thinned, but he inclined his head slightly. "How is she, Michael?"
Michael's gaze flicked between us, suspicion clear. "Stable, for now. She had some internal bleeding and a nasty concussion, but her wolf is strong. Already started the healing process by the time we got her."
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. "So she'll be okay?"
"She'll live." Michael crossed his arms, eyes narrowing. "Though I don't know if I can say the same for you two, if you keep this up."
Jason's jaw tightened. "I assume you have something to say, Michael."
"As a matter of fact, I do." Michael stepped closer, anger radiating off him in waves. "Now that you’re here, I don’t need a stupid appointment to see my brother.’’
“Step brother.’’ Jason corrected him.
“When are you going to stop being a stubborn ass and let me open a clinic in the pack? My patients deserve the best care, not this dingy overflow ward you call a hospital."
Jason's brow arched. "When you stop expecting handouts and earn your place like the rest of us."
"Earn my place?" Michael's voice rose in pitch. "My mother married your father, in case you've forgotten. This should have been my pack from the start!"
"My pack?" Jason laughed, a harsh, mirthless sound. "You're lucky I even allow you to practice here, considering your family's history."
"History?" Michael's eyes flashed gold. "The only history here is how your father used and discarded my mother like-"
"Enough!" I roared, my own wolf rising to the surface. "This isn't helping her!"
They both fell silent, glaring at each other. I took a steadying breath, trying to rein in my wolf's protective instincts.
"Michael, please." I looked at him, pleading. "Just tell me she's going to be okay."
Some of the tension left Michael's shoulders. "She'll make it. But..." He hesitated, glancing at Jason. "There's something else you both need to know."
Jason arched a brow. "Well?"
Michael's gaze shifted to the closed OR doors. "When we were operating, I... I noticed something. About her wolf."
I felt a tendril of unease curl in my gut. "What do you mean?"
"She has four mating bonds." Michael's voice was barely above a whisper. "All of them are active."
Jason's eyes widened fractionally, the only sign of his surprise. "Impossible."
"I'm telling you, it's true." Michael shook his head. "I've never seen anything like it. Her wolf is so... powerful. Overwhelming, even. It's like she's drawing in mates from all over."
I stared at him, mind racing. Four mates? How could that be? I'd only ever heard legends of such rare, blessed wolves. To have even one fated mate was considered a blessing. But four?
“You know what that means, right?’’
“Yes. We shouldn’t be associated with her. Whoever her mates are, they’ll bring war to us when they find out James hit her with his car.’’ My brother said, and for the first time, Michael agreed with Jason.
“We all know the legend. A woman with more than one mate bond holds a bigger destiny. Destruction and death follows them everywhere. One hundred years ago, women like her were hunted down and burned like witches. We cannot be connected to her.’’ Michael said.
Michael's gaze flicked between us, a strange mix of emotions flickering across his face. "Once she’s healed, send her off to her family, anonymously. Ensure no one ever finds out what happened here.” Michael spoke quickly, he led us into the room where the girl was just sleeping, machines hooked to her. “If you don’t, you two are about to have your worlds turned upside down."
“We can’t just abandon her,’’
“Don’t you get James,’’ My brother roared, “This is not just about us. If we’re linked to her, our pack is in danger. Everyone we know. Sooner or later, the ax will fall. It’s been 100 years since a woman with more than one mate bond was born. She has four. Whatever she is, whatever her destiny is, best to not be linked to it.’’
I opened my mouth to say something, but the woman stirred in her bed as she opened her eyes. The three of us froze, she looked at us.
“Where..where am I?’’
The second I looked at her eyes, they turned bright red. That’s impossible, she’s my mate.
