Chapter 1 — Decision Taken

The sun rises in the sunny blue sky and its sparkling rays fell on the Knight mansion, located in one of the most desirable residential locations in Central London, Knightsbridge.
The guards opened the giant black gates of the Knight mansion and a high speeding Red Audi R8 limited edition sports car slid into the driveway.
Seething in anger, Christian stepped out of his car in a charcoal grey suit. His jaws were clenched, and he removed shades from his honey-brown eyes, slamming the door of the car shut with a harsh thud.
As he strides over to the gorgeous Italian-styled Knight mansion crossing the expanded water fountain. The servant opened the magnificent mahogany door and respectfully greeted him, but Christian cut him off.
“Where is Grandpa?” He asked, his nostrils flaming in anger.
“He is in the lounge area.” The servant responded meekly and Christian turned on his heels, taking long steps, and upon reaching, he saw his father Luke Knight and grandfather Leo Knight sitting together enjoying coffee and chatting about some forthcoming projects.
Christian charged toward them with blazing eyes. “Grandpa, how could you do this to me?” He thundered. “How could you take such an important decision of my life without asking me?” He raised his voice and his eyes shifted to his father, Luke.
“Dad, what’s going on!! Why does he want me to get married? And that too with an Indian girl?? INDIAN!!” Christian said in a high pitch, raving in anger, and glared at his grandfather. “Grandpa, it skipped from your mind, but I’m already in a relationship with Lia. I introduced you to her before your visit to India.”
Leo took a deep breath. “Son, lemme get straight to the point. If you want to take over the position of CEO in the Knight Group, then you must marry the girl I’ve chosen for you. Accept it or reject it. The decision is yours.” He responded calmly with a small smile playing on his lips. “I can give the position to your cousin, Jake. He is ready for it!”
“Even I’m ready for it and I’ve worked my ass off to earn it. But you are imposing superfluous conditions here and I can’t fulfil them. I’m already in a fucking relationship with Lia. I love her, damn it!!” Christian almost shrieked, adding the last part.
“Chris, calm down!” Luke glared at him, but the latter was on a rampage.
“Why doesn’t he understand? Why is he mixing my professional and personal life? It’s my freaking life and I have a right to decide for myself!!” Christian shrieked, but Leo calmly took a sip of his coffee, and it irked Christian. “Why are you doing this? Do you think I’m incapable of taking decisions of my life?” He lifted an eyebrow.
“I wouldn’t have appointed an incapable man for the position of President in Knight Group!” The old man smiled. “But I believe marriage is a big decision. Yes, we have got an option to get divorced if it seems it was a wrong decision, but why make a wrong decision in the first place?”
“I’ve made up my mind!” He added.
Christian gave a nod. “Fine, I choose Lia!”
“Son, you don’t love her. Come out of your dreamland! She is trying to fool you. Lia isn’t the right one! She is just after your money, like your other ex-girlfriends.” Leo clearly stated his feelings, and Christian rolled his eyes.
He continued, “The girl I’ve chosen for you is perfect. She’s beautiful, bold, and brilliant, and she has all those excellence a guy wishes to have in his wife. You’re going to marry her and that’s final!” Leo stood up to leave.
“Fine, if that’s your final decision, I’m giving up the Knight Group for Lia. I don’t need this company or Knight’s legacy to establish myself. I can achieve everything on my own!” Christian looked into his eyes confidently. “And yeah, that Indian bitch, get her married to your loving Jake because I’ll not marry her in this life!”
Leo smiled at Christian. “Jake already likes her, and he’d certainly not turn down my request if I ask him, but I’ve chosen her for you! Anyway, there is no room for discussion when you’ve decided to leave. God bless you, son. I wish you and Lia get all the happiness in life!” Leo blessed the eternal soulmates, taking a glance at his wristwatch.
“You have exactly two hours from now. Pack up your bags and leave this house. Goodbye, son!” Leo said and walked out of the lounge area.
“Dad, what are you saying?” Luke, Christian’s father, followed Leo while Christian stood in his place, dumbfounded. He couldn’t believe what had just transpired. Grandpa, who always loved and cherished him, left him today for a mere girl whom he recently met during his visit to India.
"Fine, I stayed here for all these years and didn't move out so that you don't feel alone but if it doesn't matter to you, It doesn't matter to me!!" He shouted to their retreating back and smashed all the bottles on the bar counter, cussing out the girl who has destroyed all his plans and left the Knight mansion to be with Lia
***
At Lia’s apartment,
“WHAT? Why did you leave everything?” Lia widened her eyes.
“No… no… no, this is not happening. This cannot happen! I always wanted to lead a rich life and if Christian leaves his house and company, all my dreams of living a luxurious life will be shattered and I cannot compromise with that. Christian can’t leave his empire. He has to go back at any cost!!” Lia’s trail of thoughts paused when she heard Christian’s voice.
“What… why? I just explained everything to you.” Christian stared at Lia, frustrated, and then he clutched her hands. “I love you, Lia. That’s why I left everything to be with you. I’ll establish myself soon, but it will take some time!”
Lia smiled, removing her hand from his grasp. “I know you love me, Chris. But why did you give up the CEO’s position? The position for which you’ve worked hard day and night.” She said and paused for a few seconds as Christian stared at her.
“Look, I’m so very lucky to have someone like you who is ready to give up everything for me. But I don’t want you to jeopardize your future!” Lia tried to persuade him.
Christian heaved in a rage. “So, what do you want me to do? Go back and marry that Indian girl, grandpa has selected for me?” Christian rises to his feet. “I think I made a mistake coming here.” He sighed, glancing briefly at Lia, and turned to leave.
Lia held his wrist. “Baby, I am sorry. Please don’t leave! We will figure out something, but don’t leave your dream for me. Else, I’ll never be able to forgive myself.” She said dramatically.
Christian turned to face Lia. “We can’t do anything! Grandpa has clearly stated that I have to marry that girl if I want the CEO’s position. My hard work doesn’t matter to him now. And I know he’ll not change his mind!” He said, sitting on the couch again, and burying his face in his hand.
Lia sat beside him and put her head on his shoulder. After a few minutes of silence, Lia shrieked in excitement, snapping her fingers. “I have a plan!!”
“What plan?” Christian asked, removing his hand from his face.
“Contract Marriage!!” Lia said, excitement lacing her voice.
“A Contract Marriage?” Christian lifted an eyebrow. “Are you crazy?” He frowned.
“What crazy?” Lia knitted her eyebrows. “I know it’s not legal, but if she agrees to sign, I believe the contract marriage is the perfect solution for the trap your grandpa has designed for you,” she smirked, pouring wine into glasses.
“And what if he got to learn about this?” Christian questioned Lia’s brilliant idea.
“I’m not gonna tell him, and as far as I know, you and Danny will likewise keep your mouths shut. So who’s gonna tell him?” Lia smiled. “But to make this arrangement successful, we have to persuade this Indian girl and it’s not gonna be easy!” Lia handed him a glass of wine.
Christian took the glass of wine and put it back on the centre table, throwing his head back onto the couch. “Fuck, I already detest her so much. She is pushing me to do things I never wished to do!!”

Chapter 2 — The Protagonist

Christian left the house right after the heated argument. But his grandfather, Leo, was still as calm as the sea. It was already late evening, and resting on his bed, he was talking to the picture of his deceased wife Rosella.
He was chatting about the Indian girl, and why he chose her for their grandson when Dr Agnes walked into the room with a bottle of wine and two glasses.
“Hey, oldie! Talking to Rosella?” Dr Agnes gave a broad smile.
“Yeah, I was telling her about the girl I met in India,” Leo responded.
“Oh, that same girl you chose for Chris?” Agnes asked.
“Yes,” Leo replied with a broad grin.
“Well, I sincerely wish to know, what is so exceptional about this Indian girl that you like her so much?” Agnes inquired, sitting on the couch and pouring wine into the glasses.
Leo placed Rosella’s photo frame on the night table and sat next to Agnes on the couch to answer her. “Well, she is a beautiful girl. She knows how to handle relationships and keep a family together, and that’s precisely something my family is in dire need of learning.” Leo said, taking a long pause.
“She is an ideal girl for our Chris. She can give him a successful career and a loving family for which he craved in his childhood.” Leo further added, and Agnes nodded in response. “You know, Agnes, I am afraid. I am really afraid for my family. The family which Rosella and I moulded with so much love and care is on the verge of breakdown today and I am incapable of doing anything about it.” Leo said and glanced at Rosella’s picture sadly.
“This girl is my last hope and I’m certain she will reunite this family. She’ll do everything that I’ve failed to do. I wish to see this family together before I close my eyes forever. Agnes, it’s my last wish!” Leo took a sip of wine, removing tears from the corner of his eyes.
“I understand you, Leo. I know you’re afraid for your family, but you know Chris. He is way too smart. He must be looking out for a way to escape this trap.” Agnes said.
Leo chuckled. “Oh, I’m sure! But believe me, he can never find a way out of this trap.” Leo said with a wide smile on his face. “And I completely trust Lia on this. That bloody silicone-filled barbie doll will definitely break up with him.” Leo made a disgusted face, and they both laughed.
“Well, I’d enjoy watching Chris getting trapped. By the way, where did you meet this girl in India?” Agnes asked.
“Do you remember I went to India two months back for some business purpose?” Leo asked, and Agnes nodded.
“Well, someone told me about a city Varanasi, where people get peace and souls attain salvation after death. It’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is also considered the spiritual capital of India. So, I decided to visit Varanasi from Mumbai, and I can’t describe the serenity of that place. I realised that there was something magical, some kind of unseen, pure, and powerful energy. I absolutely enjoyed my stay there, and I met…..” Before Leo could complete his conversation, someone knocked on the half-open door and their attention shifted to the door.
“Dad, can I come in?” Luke, Christian’s father, peeked inside.
“Leo, I think I should leave now. You two need to talk.” Agnes stood up to leave. “But I’m really looking forward to meeting this girl.” She smiled and Leo nodded his head with a broad smile and then shifted his gaze to Luke.
“Sure, you can come in. I knew you’d come to see me.” Leo chuckled, and Luke closed the door behind his back. “So how can I help you, son?” Leo asked, maintaining a poker face.
“Why are you forcing Chris to marry that girl?” Luke asked, crossing his arms across his chest.
“I want her as my granddaughter-in-law and this dream can only be fulfilled through your son,” Leo stated clearly, and the corner of his mouth curved up.
“But Indian girl? Indians are so different from us. Why don’t you choose Lia or some other girl who belongs to our civilization? Why an Indian girl?” Luke questioned.
“Because….. never mind. Even if I try to explain, you will not understand. And what kind of father are you, huh? Can’t you see Lia isn’t suitable for your son? She’s a gold digger like your girlfriend, and she’ll ruin Christian’s life like your girlfriend ruined your marriage.” Leo almost shouted, stating the facts.
“Anyway, it’s irrelevant to talk about this anymore. I want that girl in this house! Tell your son to prepare himself for this wedding.” He said adamantly. “Now show yourself out! I’d like to talk to your mother and close the door on your way out.” Leo said, and Luke walked out, slamming the door with a loud thud.
Leo picked up Rosella’s photo frame again and started talking to her. He was telling her about the other qualities of the girl that he liked, and why she was just perfect for this family when the door of his room burst open, and there stood Christian.
Leo stared up at him and covered his mouth in shock. “Oh my god, are you really in front of my eyes or am I hallucinating? I thought you’d come back at least a month later when all your credit cards will stop working, but you are back in just twelve hours. What happened to my son? Lea broke up with you when she found you’ve given up the position?” Leo asked sarcastically.
“Yes, you were right about her. As soon as she came to know that I have left the battle of the CEO position, she dumped me.” Christian answered in an irritated tone.
“Wow!” Leo raises his eyebrows in surprise.
Christian took a deep breath and continued, “So, here I am, ready to marry the girl you’ve chosen for me. But I want to know why her and not any other girl from our country?” he glared at Leo.
“Son, you need to stop glaring at me like your father. And we both know that till date, all the girls you have dated were gold diggers. And this girl, whom I’ve chosen for you, is a gem and I want this gem in my family.” Leo said proudly, and Christian rolled his eyes at him.
“Okay, grandpa, I’ve already heard a lot of praises for her from your mouth. Now please don’t start again. I said I am ready to marry her.” Christian said.
“Trust me, you will not regret this decision,” Leo said with a wide grin on his face.
“But she will definitely regret marrying me!”Christian thought. “What’s her name?” He asked, scratching his neck.
“Her name is Mishka,” Leo replied with an appreciative smile.
“Mi… Mi what?” Christian stutters.
“I know it’s a bit hard to pronounce. I, too, took some time to speak this name properly.” Leo smiled, “But you need to practise because she hates when someone misspells her name.” Leo said and Christian nodded his head, but from inside, he was simmering in anger.
“Now that you’re ready for this marriage. So let me tell you, Mishka is arriving here tomorrow.” Leo broke the news, and Christian’s eyeball bulged out of its socket.
“What?” He shrieked.
“Yeah, so now leave. Practice overnight to take her name properly.” Leo clapped his hand. “And let me tell you once again, it’s MI-SH-KA.” Leo clearly pronounced each word.
“Now, please close the door on your way out. I’m exhausted and want to sleep.” Leo yawned, and Christian nodded his head.
“Bye Grandpa, goodnight,” Christian said.
“Good night, son. Now, Chop!! Chop!! Tomorrow is a big day for me.” Leo answered and Christian left his room, turning off the lights.

Chapter 3 — That Eye Contact

“You can do this, Chris. You can totally do this!” Christian kept chanting in his mind, staring at himself in the mirror, trying to calm himself. But his mind was a battlefield.
“How can I marry a girl whose name I’m not even able to pronounce perfectly? God, please get me out of this trouble.” Christian was thinking of another way to get rid of this girl without losing the CEO position when his phone started ringing and Lia’s name flashed on the screen. He was about to take her call when a servant knocked on his door and Christian’s eyes rises at him.
“Sir Leo wants to see you for the breakfast,” he said and Christian ended Lia’s call.
“I’ll be there in ten minutes!” Christian said and the servant left. He then quickly took a shower and changed into a pair of black sweatpants and a grey t-shirt. “Let’s do this!” He gave a last look at himself in the mirror and left his room to join Leo.
***
Leo was waiting for everyone when a message popped up on his phone screen and it brought a gigantic smile to his face. He was penning a reply when Christian showed up and sat next to him. “Whose message has brought this beautiful smile to your face, grandpa?” He asked, taking a sip of his orange juice.
“It’s Pasha. He said your soon-to-be wife’s plane has landed, and he is bringing her here now.” Leo answered, and Christian choked on his juice, coughing badly.
Leo quickly patted his back. “What happened to you suddenly? Are you alright now?” Christian nodded his head, and a few moments later, he relaxed. “Aren’t you excited about meeting her?” Leo asked again, watching his red face because of coughing.
“I’m thrilled! I didn’t even sleep all night,” Christian responded, mentally rolling his eyes, and took a bite of his toast.
Soon, all the family members arrived in the dining area. Luke, Christian’s father with his girlfriend Jennifer. Leo’s daughter, Berry, with his husband Dan Mathews and her son Jake. Leo’s youngest son Rony with his wife Rose, and their adopted ten-year-old son, Daniel.
Leo’s son Rony did not leave Rose, despite knowing that she could not conceive and Leo was proud of him. It was the kind of love he admires. “Is this a family meeting or something? Why is everyone here so early?” Christian asked, looking at everyone’s presence in the room.
“Yes, I have got an announcement to make before the arrival of my granddaughter-in-law,” Leo said, taking a sip of his black tea.
“That is soon to be a granddaughter-in-law, grandpa. I’ve not married her yet.” Christian corrected him.
“Well, that’s going to change soon, Chris.” Leo looked at him and then his eyes shifted to his other family members. “I want everyone to talk to her respectfully. No one will use abusive words in her presence. I want her to be comfortable here.” he sternly said.
“She’s very special to me. I’ll not accept if she’s insulted in this house, and one more important rule for you, Luke and Rony, you two will not engage in a fight with each other in her presence,” Leo warned.
“Woah! Is she the new headmaster of this house?” Luke rolled his eyes. Like father, like son.
“No good girl would like to live in an abusive environment where people quarrel with each other day and night,” Rony said, feeding porridge to his son.
“Nobody is asking for your opinion here, so I’d suggest that you keep your mouth shut,” Luke retorted crossly while Jennifer enjoyed their brawl.
“You guys started again?” Leo slammed his hand on the table. “Can’t you both sit quietly during breakfast?” he said in a high pitch. “I remember there was a time when both of you used to fight for each other, and now, you both fight with each other!!”
There was a moment of complete silence in the dining area and everybody was looking down at their plates. “Hey, Daniel! If you are done, let’s go out. We’ll play basketball!” Christian asked, breaking the silence, and Danial nodded enthusiastically. Soon, both the boys disappeared from the dining area.
“Now, everyone, please behave properly in front of her. I don’t want her to think wrong about our family. I hope you all will understand and respect the wish of this old man!” Leo pleaded at last.
***
Christian always moves away when he witnesses a brawl between his father and Uncle Rony. He doesn’t know what went wrong between them in the past, but he still has a vague recollection of childhood, where both of them were inseparable, but then he doesn’t know what transpired between them.
The ugly turn in their relationship didn’t change Rony’s love for Christian. He treated him like his own son, and for Christian, Rony was a father figure, and his son Daniel was an apple of everyone’s eye.
“Brother, let’s play!!” Daniel exclaimed, and threw the ball in Christian’s direction with full force. Christian was last in his world.
Unprepared, he dodged aside, and the ball went straight flying beside him. It was about to hit a face hard, but the girl caught the ball right before it could crash into her face and stilled in her place, stunned.
Christian couldn’t look at the girl’s face as she was holding a ball right in front of her. He was about to jog over to her when Jake appeared next to her. “Hey, are you alright?” he asked anxiously, and the girl let the ball slip from her hands.
Christian and Daniel just continued gawking at her gorgeous appearance. “Who is she?” Daniel asked.
“I’m alright, Jake. Don’t worry!” The girl responded with a smile. Her enchanting smile quickly picked Christian’s attention, and he came back to his senses only when Daniel started pulling the hem of his grey t-shirt.
Christian looked down at him. “WHAT?”
“Let’s disappear! If grandpa finds out what we have done, we are dead meat!” Daniel whispered.
“Don’t worry, chill!” Christian said and glanced back at Jake and the girl with him.“Who is she now?”He thought.
“Let’s get inside, Mishka, grandpa is waiting for you,” Jake said, and it shocked Christian to the core.
“How can she be Mishka?”He thought that someone from India would come draped in a saree with a red dot in the middle of the forehead, bangles in hand, and lots of gold jewellery around the neck.
At least the classic Indian movie Purab Aur Paschim, which Danny showed him last night, depicted how women dress up in India. Though Christian was sure that there would be a difference between the dressing sense of the 1970s and 2018 but the nonstop chattering of Danny filled him with anxiety.
Mishka was exactly contrary to what he expected. “I definitely didn’t expect her to be like this!” he said in his heart, watching her from head to toe.
She was wearing a white crop top with a pair of black high-waist jeans that showed all her curves in the right places. Her long brown hair cascaded down to her waist, and her nude five-inch heels complimented her looks perfectly.
“Yes, sure, but my luggage?” Mishka asked.
“Don’t worry, the driver will bring them inside,” Jake answered, and they sauntered toward the mansion, and when Mishka crossed Christian, their eyes locked with each other for the first time.
