Chapter 1 — The Betrayal

My husband’s phone pinged with a message. I was about to take it to him at work because he’d forgotten it at home. The message was from my sister. Curiosity piqued, I entered the password to unlock the phone and went to the message.
“I AM PREGNANT.”
My eyes nearly bugged out of my head. Pregnant? I had to sit down for this. I sank into a nearby chair and began scrolling through the messages between my sister and my husband. The evidence was clear: they had been having an affair for a very long time, and now it looked like she was pregnant. Something I couldn’t even manage to do.
A tear escaped my eye as I tried to compose myself. It shouldn’t have been a complete surprise, considering how close they had recently become and how oddly they had been acting. I had suspected they might be involved, but I didn’t want to believe that the two people I trusted most could betray me in this way. Still, I should have suspected it.
She’s probably not pregnant with him, I lied to myself as I texted her.
“Is it mine?” I sent the message.
“Of course it’s yours. What are you talking about? How could you ask me such a question?”
She tried calling, but I ignored it.
“I’m in a meeting. It’s just a surprise, that’s all.”
“Well, I hope it’s a great surprise. I know how much you want to be a father.”
That message hurt.
“Okay, I’m just coming from a meeting, and I’m on my way home. Why don’t we meet there and talk?”
“At your house? Isn’t Mina going to be there?”
“No. She left for a company seminar this morning. She won’t be back till tomorrow. Come, maybe we can get some time to talk.”
“Okay, I’m on my way.”
I went to the kitchen, got a bottle of wine and a glass, and came back to the living room. I poured myself a glass of wine. I was going to need it for this conversation.
When Rita showed up at the house, she let herself inside, walked into the living room, and found me there with my legs crossed, a glass of wine in my hand as I took a sip. Colour drained from her face as she started to nervously wring her hands and tried to leave.
“Where are you going, Rita?” I asked.
“Nowhere,” she replied before she composed herself and straightened. “I thought you were away at a seminar.”
“I didn’t tell you that. Where did you learn that from?”
“No, you didn’t…but Eric did.”
And that’s when, as she’s biting her words, she notices the phone on the table in front of the bottle of wine. Eric's phone.
Rita's whole demeanour changes as she straightened and started looking at me with a look I couldn’t decipher as if she was preparing to face her opponent.
“Mina, look, you’ve got this all wrong…” She started, but I interrupted her.
“What do I have wrong?” I asked, taking another sip of wine and looking her straight in the eyes.
“It’s not what you think about me and Eric. It was just once, and I was just so drunk. We all know that things between the two of you have been strained, and he needed somebody to talk to and get his mind off things.”
“Rita, I saw all the messages from three months ago.”
Her eyes widened. “Oh,” she said.
“Yes. Oh!”
“Well then, I guess the cat is out of the bag now. Sorry, you had to find out this way, but we both know Eric doesn't love you anymore. It was just a matter of time.”
“What made you do this? You do realize that we are blood sisters. We are related. He could have any woman he wanted. Why you?” I demanded.
“You can't stop love, Mina. When it happens, it just happens. Eric should have been mine anyway, but you just had to go and steal him from me, didn’t you? But you can't stop destiny; we were always meant to be together.”
“Are you crazy? What are you saying? Where is all of this coming from?”
This is my sister. She’s supposed to be on my side, not betraying me like this. She knows how I’ve been struggling to get pregnant. All those doctors' visits, those IVs I had to take.
Just then, Eric came into the house. As he closed the door, he said, “I think I forgot my phone.” I didn’t know if he was talking to me or himself, but as he came into the living room, he stopped in his tracks, seeing Rita and me there with his phone on the table. He could feel the tension in the air.
“What’s going on?” he asked, looking at me and Rita.
She must have subtly given him a signal that things were out in the open. “She knows,” Rita confirmed when Eric widened his eyes at her.
“Did you tell her?” Eric asked her.
“Of course not. She saw the message I sent you. I thought you were at work.”
“Look, Mina,” Eric said, trying to come toward me. But I held up a hand to stop him.
“It’s not what you think.”
“Then what is it? Please explain it to me,” I asked him, getting comfortable in the chair and taking another sip of wine from my glass.
“You were always working. We kept fighting all the time. And Rita was here. She actually listens to me and does what I say. It's hard to believe you came from the same family and grew up together.”
When I heard him say that, it was like the two of them didn’t realize what they had done, as though they thought it was justifiable. But I didn’t want to show them how much it hurt me.
“Is that why you decided to get her pregnant?” I asked him. His eyes widened as he looked toward Rita.
“You’re pregnant?” he asked, and there was a twinge of something in his voice.
“Yes,” Rita answered, nodding her head. Eric’s whole face lit up as he smiled broadly at Rita, looking at her belly and placing his hand on her flat stomach.
“You’re really pregnant?” he asked.
She nodded again.
“Yes.”
“I can’t believe it,” he said, his excitement evident.
Then he looked up. “I’m going to be a father. Finally!”
He looked at Rita and me simultaneously. “I am going to be a father!” he announced. He seemed genuinely happy about this, which grated at me.
It felt like a personal insult. It painfully reminded me of my inability to get pregnant after three years of marriage. The hurt was almost unbearable, but I masked it.
“What do you plan to do about this?” I asked him, choosing to focus on my husband.
“Plan to do about this? What do you mean?” he asked, acting confused.
“You’re not thinking I’m going to have an abortion, are you?” Rita asked, then laughed. “This pregnancy was not an accident. We planned to have this baby. Sorry, big sis,” she apologized sarcastically with a triumphant smile.
“Nobody is having an abortion.“ Eric firmly said to no one and both.
“Sorry big sis, you and I both know Eric should have been mine. Destiny is at work.“:Rita told me while patting her stomach slowly.
I forced a smile back and told her,
“C’mon, little sis. You didn’t steal my man. You and your destiny were doing me a favour. You can have him.”
Then I turned to my husband, who still seemed to be in his own little world. How could he sacrifice all we had been through just so he could become a father, with my own sister? Don’t they have any shame?
“I want a divorce,” I told Eric, my voice calm and composed, hiding my true feelings.
“Wait, what?” Eric asked, surprised.
“You didn’t really think I was going to stay with you after you cheated on me with my own sister and betrayed my trust, did you?”
“Of course, he is going to give you a divorce. He loves me and I am pregnant now. We are going to be a family,” Rita interjected.
“You deserve each other,” I said as I stood.
“My lawyers will contact you about the divorce.”
I walked out with my head held high, not turning back even for a second.
I was so tired of being underrated and treated like a piece of trash by him. I was done trying to fix our marriage and begging for love. I needed to level up; I needed more for myself. I also intended to make him regret demeaning me by sleeping with my sister and getting her pregnant, deepening my pain over my own inability to conceive.
I went to a high-end, VIP-exclusive club in the city to forget what had happened. I was determined to have the best fun of my life. I had been a good wife, working tirelessly in my husband’s company, striking deals just to please him, but he always demeaned me for my inability to bear children.
As I drank and enjoyed myself, I decided to get wild by dancing with some random guy, letting the alcohol fuel my reckless abandon and rule my body.
While dancing to the music and letting my body do its work, I spotted a handsome, dashing man in his early to mid-forties walk into the club. All eyes were on him—the women filled with lust and the men with jealousy. He had an energy around him that captured people’s attention.
He looked around the club, and our eyes met. It was for a split second, but in my drunken state, I felt an immediate surge of dirty desires toward him. I wondered what being close to him and feeling him on me would be like.
But then, as I looked closer, something struck me. Wait, that face looks familiar…

Chapter 2 — A Night Out

While still dancing and thinking about the man who had just walked into the bar, I felt the guy I was grinding against starting to get a little too handsy. His hands clumsily wandered towards my waist, then my butt, and soon he was trying to slip his fingers inside my dress.
I swatted at his hands, but he didn't stop. Frustrated, I decided to leave the dance floor, but he grabbed me and pulled me back.
I was too drunk and uncoordinated to fight him off effectively. As I pushed him away, telling him to leave me alone,
“Let go of me…..let me go.“
His hands continued their unwanted exploration. The music was too loud and everyone around us was lost in their own world, and no one seemed to notice or care.
Just as his hand began to gain entrance into my dress, rising higher and higher, dread filled me. I struggled to push him away. Suddenly, I heard a fierce growl.
"Stay away from her! She said no."
The man was shoved away from me, and I looked towards my rescuer. The voice sounded familiar, and as he stepped closer, I recognized him. It was my father-in-law, Emerson. Eric's father. The most gorgeous man I had ever seen.
He led me away from the dancefloor and took me to a VIP table. With a concerned look on his face, he asked,
“Mina, are you all right? What are you doing here all alone? Where’s Eric?”
“I’m fine. I’m okay, really,” I replied, though my words felt hollow.
“Why are you in this state? Why are you so drunk? Does Eric know you’re here? I should call him.” About to take his phone.
“No, please don’t. Please don’t call him.”
“What’s going on between the two of you? Did you fight?.”
“I really don’t want to talk about it right now.”
“Okay, well, are you sure you’re okay though?”
“Yes, I’m fine. Thank you for being my hero,” I said with a smile, trying to be as flirty as I could manage.
He smiled back. “Okay, let me get you some water.”
“Oh no, let’s just drink. Let’s continue drinking. I want to have whatever you are having”
“I don’t think you’re in a state to handle more alcohol,” he said, calling for the server who brought both of us bottles of water.
He watched me take a sip and there was something in his eyes that I couldn’t quite place. When I looked back and smiled, he avoided eye contact and shook his head
There was something about him that had always called out to me. Although he was in his forties, he was in great shape.
I had to admit, I had always had a sort of crush on him. And since his wife had been out of the picture for years, I realized that maybe I should use this situation to get my revenge on Eric. He slept with my sister…how would it feel if I did the same with his father?
I wondered what it would be like if I started dating him and eventually married him. If we got married, I’d become Eric’s stepmother. Oh, the irony. I’d have so much authority over him. Eric and I both work for his family's company. His father is the owner of the company. And as his wife, I would also become an owner of the company and probably his boss.
It would be the ultimate revenge.
“You are very handsome,” I said, my voice tinged with flirtation. “ Are you seeing anyone?“
He looked at me with concern. “I think you’re too drunk. It’s time I take you home. Come on.”
He helped me up from my seat and started guiding me outside the club with a hand on my back.
When we got inside the car, he helped me in, and then fastened my seatbelt, making me jiggle. He kept shaking his head, clearly amused, but I was too drunk to care. He got into the driver’s seat, and just before he started the car, he turned to me and said,
"What is this about? I've never seen you like this…drunk, acting this way. What's going on? Did you have a fight with Eric?"
“Eric is cheating on me,” I said, my voice flat as I stared ahead.
His eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, I didn’t expect that."
“Neither did I,” I replied, laughing bitterly. “But the last thing I want to think about is him.”
“I’m so sorry. I just want you to know that I’m here if you need to talk or anything.”
“Yeah, I’ll keep that in mind, but since you’re already here, maybe you can help me with something else.”
“Something else? Like what?” he asked cautiously as I traced my hand over his jacket.
There was something about the way he carried himself, the way he dressed. not trying to look young, but not old either. He was just perfectly in the middle, so captivating.
“Stop it, Mina. You’re not thinking straight,” he said firmly.
“Maybe tonight I’m thinking straighter than I ever have in my entire life.”
“Okay, that’s enough. I’m taking you home now,” he said, starting the car and heading out of the parking lot.
“No, you can’t take me there. I’m not going back,” I protested.
“Why? Where should I take you? Do you want me to take you to your parents’ house?”
“My parents’ house?” I echoed, my mind flashing to Rita and her pregnancy, and my parents. “No, that’s the last place I want to be. Just get me a hotel or something.”
He takes me to a nearby hotel, and as he checks me in, I sit in the lobby, feeling the room spin slightly. When he's done, he hands me the keycard.
"Here," he says, "can you make it up there?"
"I'm so woozy, I don't think I can do it by myself," I reply, feeling a bit helpless.
He sighs, takes my hand, and leads me towards the elevator. We go up, and when we reach the room, he opens the door and I step inside, but he lingers at the entrance, hesitating.
"Come on, come in," I say, trying to sound reassuring.

Chapter 3 — The Divorce

“No, I don't think it's a great idea. I think I’m just going to go. You're already here, you’re fine," he responds, clearly uncomfortable.
"What if something happens to me?" I ask.
"Nothing's going to happen to you," he says.
"How do you know that?“
“What do you want from me now?“
“ Come inside, we can stay on the couch or something. Don’t leave me alone; I really don’t want to be alone tonight."
He looks at me, weighing his options, before finally relenting. "Alright, fine," he says, closing the door behind him and stepping into the room.
He goes and takes a seat on the sofa, and I sit down next to him. "Do you want some coffee?" he asks. "Maybe I could order it or something."
"No, just a glass of water, maybe," I say softly.
He pours water into a glass from a bottle and hands it to me. Our eyes meet, and there's tension in the air as we both struggle to find the right words, searching for something to say to each other.
Then, all of a sudden, I'm on him. I'm kissing him, my hands roaming over his body. He responds just as fiercely, his hands gripping my dress. My zipper comes undone, and before I know it, he's carrying me into the bedroom. Clothes are quickly discarded, and we're both naked. But when it was over, I realised what I had been missing my whole life. I have the best orgasms I’ve ever had in my entire life.
When the sun filters into the room in the morning, I'm groggy from the alcohol and the light, but then I see him, my hero from last night. "Here, take this, it'll help," he says, handing me a pill and some water.
I take the pill and drink the water, feeling the headache slowly begin to dissipate.
"I'm so sorry," he keeps saying, his voice filled with regret. "I don't know what I was thinking. I never meant to take advantage of you. I really don’t know how or what to do about this. I so….."
I frown, confused. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm really sorry. I never meant for it to happen. I don’t know what I was thinking. I mean, if Eric finds out about this…."
"Eric is the last person I’m thinking about," I cut him off. "Last night was the best night of my life. I can't believe you finally gave me what I’ve been dreaming about all my life. You fulfilled all my fantasies and more," I add with a wink.
He shakes his head, clearly distressed. "No, you're not thinking straight. This isn’t right. I'm your father-in-law.“
“Soon-to-be-father-in-law. Eric and I are getting a divorce,"
His expression softens. "I'm sorry to hear that."
"He cheated on me," I continue, my voice trembling. "With Rita, my sister."
His eyes widen "Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Rita, your younger sister? He didn't do that."
"He did," I say, tears welling up. "They’ve been seeing each other for the past three months. She’s pregnant. She’s expecting his baby."
He listens as I tell him about what happened when I confronted Eric. He is furious.
"I can’t believe Eric would do this. After everything… After his mother left me and I had to raise him by myself, he knows how much I hate cheating. He knows how much his mother’s betrayal hurt me. How could he do the same thing? I can't believe he would stoop so low. I’m so disappointed in him right now."
"Yes," I reply, my voice steady. "And that's why I'm going to get a divorce."
He nods, "Of course, you deserve nothing but the best. Your father told me to take care of you, and I was very happy when you and Eric got married. I thought he was going to treat you right. But after this betrayal, you are right to ask for divorce."
"I never imagined it would end like this," I admit,
"I know," he says gently. "But sometimes, things don’t work out the way we hoped. You have to think about your future and what’s best for you."
I looked at him, "You know," I begin, "I'm not as hurt by Eric's betrayal as I thought I'd be."
He raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. "Really?"
"Yes," I nod. "Maybe... maybe it happened for the best. Maybe it was what I needed to finally realize what I really want in life."
He watched me closely, waiting for me to continue.
"For a long time," I confessed, "I’ve had feelings for someone else. Someone who’s always been there, someone I’ve admired since I was a little girl. Back when you were just my father’s friend, I had the biggest crush on you. And that feeling never really went away."
His eyes widened slightly as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
I took a deep breath, gathering my courage. "So, I need to ask you something... Would you marry me?"
He didn’t say anything, just stared at me with shock written all over his face.
****
We sit in front of our lawyers, the divorce papers spread out before us. After I sign my name, I silently smile, staring at the sheets of paper. This marks as the beginning of my freedom, happiness and revenge.
Eric notices and snaps at me.
"You really think you have it all figured out, don't you? You really think the grass is greener on the other side. You're going to regret this."
I smile back at him. "Of course you would think that."
"You dare divorce me, and think you can just hand me divorce papers? You think you can hurt me with this?" he seethes.
I smile,
"I gave you what you've always wanted. Isn't she what you wanted all along?" I say, nodding toward Rita, who clings to his arm and pats him slowly, lovingly, as if trying to gain a reaction from me.
