Chapter 1 — Betrayal
"Hey, Andrei, what happened? I guess you're so quiet now? ” I commented to my boyfriend. I have noticed his silence since I arrived.
We are in a restaurant. I was at home earlier when he invited me to dinner. I wouldn't have gone but he said he had something important to say. So here I was, I was immediately rushed to our meeting place.
“U-uhm”
“Hey! What’s wrong with you? ” I smiled as I looked at him.
"U-Uhm, babe…" He can't look straight into my eyes.
“You made me hurry to come here, Andrei. So, what do you want to say? ” I was surprised because he just stared slightly into my eyes. "Come on, Andrei, spill it, babe." I was forced to smile again.
"U-Uhm, babe…" He still seemed to doubt what he wanted to say.
“Andrei, speak up. Tell me. What's wrong with you?" I said calmly. I even held his hand resting on the table.
"Babe…" he said softly and then looked straight into my eyes. “I-I’m sorry…”
My forehead is suddenly wrinkled. I was also suddenly nervous so I looked at him confused. “Sorry? For what? ” I managed to stay calm. “Oh, my! Come, let's just eat, babe. ” Then I winked.
I still try to calm my feelings even though I'm a little nervous about what kind of "sorry" he was saying. I knew there was something wrong with it. And he was not yet ready to spill it tonight.
I started to eat my food, while Andrei seemed hesitant to eat. I've been noticing him these past few days. He was always busy and seemed to be losing time with me. Even texting or calling he forgets. If I hadn't taken the initiative, no message would have come from him. And as I noticed he is already very cold in our relationship. Like what was happening now. He was so close yet so far.
"Babe!" he called my attention. "Kathy is pregnant."
I was stunned. I automatically looked at him and dropped the spoon I was using. "W-what did you say?"
"K-Kathy is pregnant."
Suddenly my breathing quickened. Maybe… Shit! “R-really? But she didn’t inform me yet.” I smiled but honestly, I was more nervous.
Kathy was my friend. Not just a friend but my best-of-the-best friend. She was like a sister to me because we were so close to each other. But these past few weeks it seems like she has become different like Andrei. I first noticed that when I came from vacation in the US. Kathy didn’t pick me up at the airport the first time it happened. And she always picked me when Andrei is away. But right now, I felt like she was moving away and avoiding me for reasons I don't know.
But if Kathy was indeed pregnant, why didn’t she tell me? I was her best friend but she hid it from me even more.
"B-because it's — m-mine."
I suddenly choked on the food I was chewing. “W-what are you saying, Andrei? This is not a joke. T-that's a bad joke. It's not funny!" I said after drinking the water and trying to calm my voice.
“I know you’ll never believe this mess, but it’s true. I-I got her pregnant… ” he said as he lowers down his head.
I feel so nervous. “Can you please stop it, Andrei!” I sighed as other people who were also eating there turned to us.
"B-but it's true, Charm." He was still bent over.
I was suddenly stunned and it was as if the rotation of the world had stopped. It was as if I was struck by the fact that he was saying that I was trying to deny myself.
What the hell is happening ?! Oh, God.
That's why Kathy was different from me, she betrayed me. I treated her like my own sister!
So, is it true? That your best friend would be one of your best enemies. They would turn into a snake, beat you anytime just for their own happiness!
Damn it! damn her!
When my feelings subsided and I understood everything Andrei was saying I suddenly move. I grabbed my shoulder bag and walked out of the restaurant.
As I walked I felt the tiny teardrop down my cheeks. I didn’t notice it! all I could feel was the pain inside my heart.
Of all people, why Kathy? Lots of others out there. Oh, God, the pain of what they did to me is really hard to bear. Both of them were special to me.
I was close to my car when someone suddenly grabbed my arm and forced me to stop walking. When I turned around, I immediately saw Andrei's sad eyes.
A slap full of anger immediately slipped out of my hand. I was still not satisfied and I slapped on his other cheek again.
“Don’t touch me!” I said and immediately wiped away the uncontrollable tears.
"I deserved it," Andrei said while caressing his reddened cheek.
“Yes, you deserve that! More than that! ” I almost shout at his face.
“I-I’m sorry. We don’t both intentionally— ”
“Do you hear what you are saying? Huh? That you didn't want it? Oh, come on! You like it, you like it! And You both fooled me! ”
“No! It was an accident, babe. we were both very drunk and we didn't know what was happening that night,” he still explained.
“Don't make a fool of me, Andrei! You know, if you really love me, you should stay away even if you're drunk. You're weak! You didn’t think of me so it has happened. My God, Andrei! Why Kathy? Of all people, why my best friend?” My tears fell and I couldn’t stop it again.
He just bent down and couldn’t look at me directly.
I would have turned my back on him when he stopped me again.
"I love you, babe."
"You love Me? No, you don’t love me! because if you really love me, you shouldn't be tempted to try something that will hurt my feelings. Of all people, it's Kathy!”
“I’m so sorry, babe. I understand what you feel and it’s my damn fault. Please forgive me,” he weakly apologized.
"It's over!" I said and removed his hand from my arm. Yeah, it was over. There and there we go. Maybe we weren't meant for each other.
“No! I will not allow it. Please, let’s talk ‘this’ first, babe. Please. if I could only bring it back that day, I would, to correct that mistake of mine. Please, babe, give me one more chance, please? I'll fix it, promise. Just don't drive me away,” he pleaded and took my two hands again.
I burst out laughing. “I hope you thought of that before and did nothing to ruin our relationship, Andrei! I hope you thought about the consequences before you did any mistakes.” I said, still in tears. I tried to get out of his grasp. “Maybe… maybe we’re not meant for each other, Andrei. Maybe it happened because we really aren’t for each other.” I was shaken. "Maybe there is a reason why this happened."
“Don’t, babe. I still want to build a family with you. Please. Let us still keep our oath. we don’t have to end this all just because of her, of that baby,” he still pleaded.
I was surprised by what Andrei said. I looked him straight in the eyes. “Just because of that baby? Do you hear what you are saying? You know, if you don't have a conscience, then, I am not like you who is heartless. If you have no quilt to do that to the child, then, don't think I am. The child is not to blame for what you did to me so don't be like that! You have already made that mistake so you must stand up!” I shouted at him. "I'm not going to be grateful every day with you while I'm hurting an innocent child."
“Please, Charm. I love you. I love you, babe, please. I will do everything, I will still marry you.” This time he cried too.
"If you really love me, Andrei, then, please hold that child accountable."
He shakes his head. “I can't do what you want. You are the one I love. It's only you, b-babe. ”
"Prove it. Be a true man for the child even if you didn't plan it. Have mercy on that little child, for Christ’s sake, Andrei. Don't count the child among others who have no family.”
“I don’t want to be tied to a life I don’t want, Charm. Just ask anything else, just don't let me do that, please.”
“Then it’s your choice, Andrei! But it doesn’t mean that I will continue to be in a relationship with you,” I said. “Bye. T-thank you anyway. Because you didn’t hide it from me. even though you hurt me so much, and at least I found out early.”
I turned around completely and didn't look back even Andrei called my name. Every time he called and begged, my heart seemed to be choking. I cry every step I take away from him.
I quickly got into the car and immediately started the engine. I saw Andrei move next to my car and slightly knocked on the glass. I looked at him and saw his face full of tears. I knew he was hurt, but the pain I was feeling was worse.
I did not show any mercy. I hardened my feelings. I don’t want to feel sorry for him because he doesn’t deserve that. I will accept what happened but it wasn’t that easy.
while driving I remembered the good things that had happened in the few years we had been in a relationship. All the good memories are unfortunate. We even swore that no matter what happened we would still be in the end. That everyone will go to the wedding. We have so many plans for our future life. but he himself ruined it. He himself destroyed it.
Andrei swore that he would never fool me and make me cry. But what did he do? He betrayed me! And worse, he betrayed me with my best friend.
Suddenly I stopped driving because I feel I could no longer breathe in tears. I slammed the steering wheel of the car.
I hate you! I hate you! I hate you both!
They wasted everything, including the huge trust I gave them. I still can't believe that everything I have, my boyfriend and best friend was already gone.
When I got home, I immediately went to my yard. I put the trash bag full of his things in the big drum, then burned it. I watched the fire eat all our three years of memories.
Before I could think twice, I pulled the promise ring off my finger and threw it straight into the burning trash can.
Chapter 2 — My best friend
"Good morning, Miss," the woman in the luxury salon smiled at me.
Instead of sulking in my room and drowning in depression, I chose to do things that would make me feel confident and beautiful.
“Uhm, Miss, I need a total makeover. The one that will show up my real beauty," I said firmly.
By noon the next day, I walked out of the city’s most elite luxury salon.
The stylist didn't cut my hair, but instead changed it into a smooth, expensive, and voluminous big wave style that cascaded naturally down my shoulders, while applying a stunning, sophisticated makeup look that highlighted my eyes. Combined with a sexy, high-end designer dress that hugged every curve I had previously hidden, the woman in the mirror was completely unrecognizable.
She looked dangerous. She looked like a heartbreaker.
To celebrate my rebirth, I decided to have a drink, so I drove to an upscale rooftop restaurant downtown.
But just as I pulled into the valet lane, a sleek, matte-black luxury car suddenly cut me off, nearly grazing my bumper.
Perfect. Another idi*t.
I stepped out of my car, slamming the door shut.
The driver’s side door of the luxury car opened at the same time, and a man in a sharp suit stepped out—it was clearly the personal chauffeur.
But through the heavily tinted, half-rolled-down window of the VIP back seat, I could barely catch a glimpse of the man sitting inside.
Even with the glass obscuring most of his face, the brief sight made the air catch in my throat.
He had a devastatingly sharp, aristocratic jawline and dark, intensely magnetic eyes that seemed to pierce right through the darkness of the car.
Everything about his silhouette radiated ungodly wealth and power.
"Watch where you're driving, lady," the chauffeur clipped out, his voice sharp and arrogant as he glanced down at the minor scratch on their front bumper.
I didn't flinch. I took a slow step forward, raising an eyebrow with a cold confidence I never knew I possessed.
"Your blinker wasn't on, Mister. Tell your boss inside to name his price for the scratch, or get out of my way. I have a lunch reservation."
Through the tinted glass, I felt the gaze of the hidden billionaire lock onto my face. His dark eyes narrowing slightly, caught completely off guard by my icy defiance.
Before the chauffeur or the mysterious man inside could utter another word, I simply tossed my valet keys to the attendant and swept past the luxury car without waiting for an answer.
The hostess guided me into the elegant restaurant. But the moment I stepped onto the polished marble floor, my gaze was instantly locked onto a table right by the window.
Kathy.
My former best friend. The backstabbing snake who had ripped my life apart. And she wasn't alone. She was gently rubbing her still-flat stomach, a smug, self-satisfied smile playing on her lips like a cat that had just swallowed a canary. She looked so happy, completely untouched by the wreckage she had left behind.
Instead of turning around and fleeing like a coward, a cold wave of confidence washed over me. I threw my shoulders back, lifted my chin high, and walked straight toward her table.
The sharp, rhythmic clicking of my high heels echoed against the marble, drawing the eyes of several patrons, but my focus was entirely on her.
Kathy looked up casually, ready to ignore a passing stranger—but the exact millisecond her eyes registered my face, her jaw literally dropped.
The fake innocence she always wore like a mask completely shattered into pure, unadulterated shock.
“C-Charm……?” She gasped out loud, sucking in a sharp breath. Her eyes frantically darted back and forth between my gorgeous, voluminous new big waves and the stunning designer dress that draped perfectly over my body. “Is that…… really you?”
“Miss me, Kathy?” I smirked, pulling out the chair at the vacant table just a short distance across from her.
I sat down with slow, deliberate grace, elegantly crossing my legs as I stared her down.
“I must say, p*egnant suits you. It really highlights the desperate look in your eyes.”
Kathy's face instantly flushed a deep, angry red.
The momentary guilt in her eyes evaporated, replaced by a vicious, defensive glare as she leaned across the table.
"You don't have to be so cruel, Charm! What happened between Andrei and me was an accident. We didn't mean to hurt you, we were just so drunk that night..."
"Don't call me Charm, Kathy. You lost that right the moment you let my fiancé into your bed," I said sarcastically, leaning back and looking at her with total disdain. "And stop using drunkenness as an excuse. It's pathetic and cheap, just like the two of you."
Kathy's hands trembled, and she tightly clutched her stomach, trying to weaponize her condition. "You can say whatever you want, but Andrei chose me! I am p*egnant with his child now, and we are going to build a real family. He's giving me everything he never gave you! You dressing up in this expensive outfit won't change the fact that you couldn't keep your man!"
The insult was loud, and I could feel the eyes of the surrounding guests turning toward our section. But I didn't let her see a single crack in my composure. Instead, I burst into a soft, mocking laugh that cut right through her words.
"Keep him?" I chuckled, looking at her with genuine pity.
"Honey, I didn't lose him. I threw out the trash, and you blindly rushed in to pick it up. If you want my sloppy seconds so badly, you are completely welcome to them. Have fun raising a family with a liar."
"You btch!" Kathy shrieked, her face twisting into an ugly mask of rage. She slmmed her hand hard against the table, standing up so fast her water glass spilled over. "You're just a bitter, lonely loser who got dumped!"
The scene was becoming entirely too loud and chaotic.
Suddenly, before Kathy could yell another word, a handsome restaurant manager quickly stepped between us. His expression was completely professional but freezing cold. Two burly security guards immediately moved in right behind him, framing Kathy.
"Excuse me, Ma'am," the manager said to Kathy, his voice dripping with polite authority. "Our boss is currently dining in the private VIP section just over there, and he strictly dislikes loud, disruptive noises disturbing the guests. He has just personally ordered us to handle this situation. I must ask you to leave the premises immediately before our security escorts you out."
Kathy’s face drained of all color. She looked around the room, finally realizing that every elite diner in the restaurant was staring at her like a crazy, hysterical woman. Trembling with utter embarrassment, she grabbed her designer purse and hurried away in total shame, not even looking back.
"Thank you," I told the manager, finally breathing a sigh of relief.
"It is entirely our pleasure, Ma'am. Our boss explicitly noted that a beautiful lady's afternoon should never be ruined by an unwelcome guest," the manager replied with a respectful bow. He then turned slightly, pointing his hand toward the elevated, dimly lit VIP lounge across the dining room.
I turned my head, following his hand, and looked straight over to the glass divider.
Sitting at a secluded dark table was the tall silhouette of a man.
Because of the distance and the moody, elegant lighting of the private section, his facial features were blurry and completely unreadable. But even from afar, I could distinctly trace an incredibly sharp, aristocratic jawline and a commanding, god-like aura that radiated pure power.
He looked devastatingly handsome, sitting there like a king observing his court.
As if sensing my eyes on him, the dark silhouette slightly tilted his head in my direction.
He slowly raised his crystal glass toward me in a silent, distant toast.
My heart suddenly skipped a heavy beat.
A strange, fleeting warmth rushed through my chest, but I quickly shook my head, tearing my gaze away. He was just a wealthy, powerful stranger—a passing shadow I would likely never cross paths with again.
The waiter soon arrived and served my food.
I ate quietly, the sweet taste of victory lingering on my tongue.
Kathy was gone, humiliated and defeated, but my adrenaline was still pumping much too fast. My entire system was restless, buzzing with a wild, untamed energy.
I knew that if I went back to my empty, quiet house now, the shadows of the past three years would try to creep back in. I couldn't let the depression win.
I quickly finished my meal, paid the bill, and walked out to the valet to get my car.
Tonight, I wasn't going to be the victim.
Tonight, I was going to the wildest, loudest sports bar downtown.
I was going to drink, dance, and completely lose myself in the neon lights and the chaotic crowd to celebrate my absolute freedom.
Chapter 3 — At The Club
Different in view, different in feeling, and strange atmosphere. That was my first expression the moment I stepped inside this establishment. People call it "Paradise" and have nothing else to do but have fun.
I have never been to this place because it was only home and school when I was still studying. And when I graduate, it's just also home and work. But it changed three years ago when I met, Andrei.
So at my age now, it is too late to experience this. But as other people said 'it was better late than never'.
I felt a little bit nervous. I was scared because of the darkness of the environment and the ferocity of the melody. My knees were shaking, my hands were sweating, and my skin felt cold. But despite that, I still managed to stay cool.
A lot of people are having fun. Liquor here, liquor there. A dance that there is no tomorrow with full of rudeness and flirting. Wasted Bar, that’s the name of the bar I went to. Wasted, exactly to the customers who were here because they also looked wasted. And I was here to overcome, to forget, and also to get wasted.
I can’t blame other men for how they stare at me. Why? Because I was wearing my most seductive black fitted backless dress that was above the knee. The neckline of the dress perfectly suited my bosom, and it was emphasizing my softened exposed shoulders and back. My hair was sexily swaying while I'm moving inside the bar. I chose to apply dark makeup that I knew would suit my alluring outfit.
This is what others usually do when they get hurt, right? They eventually are beautiful without even realizing it, right?
I remember earlier when Martha told me. She almost didn't know me and she was very stunned by my new appearance. I was even asked by her why I was like that. E, I just smiled and I didn’t respond.
I immediately stood in front of the bartender. I didn’t entertain the lustful stares from the other guys.
“One shot of martini, please,” I seductively asked the hot bartender.
He smirked. "Sure, Ma'am."
*****
Bradley Hernandez,
The CEO of the Hernandez Group of Companies.
The young businessman.
admired by many for being a young achiever, besides that also admired by women. Earning money at a young age is very spectacular. He was very hot, handsome, intimidating, and many more. It seems that all the good qualities that God has spread in the man, he was one of the lucky men who received it. Except in the goodness of habit. He is a serious man living in his way, he doesn't show his smiles, and he is a kind of a snob and stubborn billionaire.
Most people said that his future girlfriend was very lucky to have him. and especially who became his future wife. But he didn’t use it, he doesn’t want to belong to those married men like others. For him, women are just a pain in the head, and business should be taken care of.
He is unkind sometimes. Strict boss to their company. but of a good provider and also a leader. He's not a bad person, he just wants everything to be in order.
He never goes out to have some fun, because he justifies that his happy-go-lucky life was over at the time when he only cared about himself.
(BRAD)
"Cheers and chill." My colleagues happily shouted.
“Hey, Brad. What a surprise that you joined our group today. ” Vincent couldn’t believe my presence.
"Yes, Brad," Troy, Albert, and Greg are also surprised. They were my best buddies, from then until now.
I smirked and then drank my liquor. "If you don't want me here, guys, then I'll go," I said as I dropped the wineglass on the table.
“Gago. We just can’t believe it,” Troy said.
“Yeah. Agree, ”Albert also mumbled.
“Tsk! Apologies. You know I'm really busy. handling and running our family business alone is really hard. You know that,” I explained.
Ever since Dad retired, I am the one who needs to take care of our company. But I just thought, I also need to unwind once to get rid of my stress in the office.
“Hey, dude. You are not the only one who is busy. we all are. But why would you prefer to be confined to your boring and private office? Have fun sometimes,” Greg said as he poured the wine into my glass. “Drink up. You've been always absent in our group." And he put a lot of wine in my glass.
“Dude, Vincent will be happily married soon. But look at him, he is always present in our group, ” Troy said.
“Okay, guys. To shut you up, I will be here in Wasted more often,” I said just to keep them quiet.
“We heard you loud and clear. So, we will always expect you here,” Albert smirked. “Cheers! for our friend who is always busy.” The three shouted and I just laughed.
“Dude. Seems like we are very lucky now. Look, a lot of girls are here, ”Greg pointed out to a group of women who were dancing on the dance floor.
Of them all, Greg is the most playboy and chick boy. A lot of women desire him, and he also makes girls cry over him. Everywhere he goes, there is always a woman. It's just like a dress to change women for him.
“Very well said. Let’s go and join them, Greg. Let's warm up their night.” Albert grinned.
On the other hand, Albert is mischievous but sticks to one. Sometimes he fooling around but often fooled by anyone. He is different when it comes to love. He is generous. But unlike the others, it was easy for him to move on.
“Yeah, dude. Let’s join them. Come on,” Troy said who stood up earlier.
Troy is delicate but also a certified playboy. She may be choosy. He always wanted a perfect woman who would pleasure and please him. But so far, he hasn’t lost a woman in his life.
“Good luck, dude. Just think one of those is for you,” Vincent said shaking his head.
Vincent Madrigal, 'the most secretive' among us. We just learned that he was going to marry his childhood sweetheart. But way back, he has also a lot of women in his life.
“Oh, come on, Vince. There still no one has been born for us. Right, Brad?” Greg said after swallowing all the contents of his wine.
“Oh, Greg you always play as the mastermind,” I said. He just smiled. "But yeah, you're right."
“As always, Brad. Come on, let’s mingle,” He said, standing up and following Troy and Albert.
"I'm not in the mood," I said but I think he didn't hear because he had already left.
Vincent and I left at our table. We just kept talking and talking about things and the business world. He was also handling their business— The Ruby’s, a five-star hotel and restaurant located in Quezon City. He was also a busy man, especially in the next few days because he was going to have his own family. I wonder, what kind of excuse he said to his bride-to-be and allowed her to hangout today?
"You? Don't you want to follow them?”
“No. I came here to relax, not to look for a woman.”
“But a woman is relaxing,” he playfully said.
"Not all the time."
“Whoa! You changed a lot, Brad. You seem to have matured now, very different from then. I still remember, you are more than those three,” he pointed out to our three friends who already had their partners that time.
"That's life. It's not like forever we'll just act as happy-go-lucky. We also need to be serious. Like you."
He nodded. “Yeah. You have a point, dude.”
"Anyway, when did you and Evane get married?" I asked out of curiosity.
“Soon, Brad. We haven't decided on the month and date yet, we don't want to rush. You know, my bride-to-be wants a perfect time always. And of course, I want to give the best wedding for her,” Vincent replied still smiling.
“Tsk! Tsk! It turns out that we will fewer singles. Is there is no possibility to change your decision?”
“That's really how life is, we will all have a family one day. Change my decision? Never, because this is what I want. I know that soon one of you four will be next to me,” he proudly said.
“Nah. Not my dream. You love her?”
“Very much. I love her and I dreamed of this a long time ago.” It was very obvious that Vincent loves her.
our conversation lasted longer while the three were still having fun. Our conversation was cut short when someone called Vincent. He stood up and went out to answer the call.
When Vincent left for a while, I had a chance to look all around. Wasted Bar. this bar was our paradise. During our college life, after class, we immediately went here. We met our flings here. We were happy-go-lucky bastards way back. But of the five of us, those three got worse over the years.
I frowned when I saw a woman sitting alone in a corner. she looked familiar, but I didn’t know when and where did I first saw her.
My eyes focused on her. She was beautiful so it grabbed my attention. She had perfect curves that were hard to resist. She did not look like a whore. I had this urge to join her. but I stayed still because maybe her partner was just in CR. But I think she was alone... and lonely? Impossible! As charming as her is has no companion?
My attention to the woman was interrupted when someone spoke in front of me.
“Dude, can I leave and go home now? There is an emergency. Please tell the three that I already went away.” Vincent said worriedly.
“Sure, Vince. I'll take care of it,” I replied immediately.
“Okay, Brad. Thanks. I’ll go now.” And then he left. There was haste in his action.
My eyes went back to that woman again. He is still unaccompanied.
What If I approach her?
******
(CHARMANE)
Hmp! The crowd was looking at me, but no one was approaching. Am I that ugly? I asked myself.
As I looked around I saw a man. He was looking in my direction like I was a small object and he needed a microscope to see me. I frowned when I saw that he seemed familiar to me. But I couldn’t remember when or how.
I gulped when I see him blink. Suddenly both my cheeks blushed. I ignored his presence and enjoyed the moment alone. But when I turned my eyes on him again, I saw he was still staring at me.
What’s wrong with him?
I avoided his gaze because I couldn't hold back. I drank my wine. I winced when I felt the bitter liquid in my throat again. It's like the bitterness of my wasted relationship with Andrei.
I was now a little bit tipsy because I had my fifth shot of a martini. But I was grateful because I had a high tolerance for alcohol. So I dared to drink a lot and alone. I don't have any friends to join me here, because Kathy was my only friend who turned out to be my enemy.
I looked again in the direction of the man I've noticed. I swallowed because he was still staring at me. and this time, he was already smiling slightly which made my heart beat faster.
He is cute. I mean handsome, and I think, he is great among the other guys out there.
What if I invite him here or offer him wine? Hmm, I suddenly thought.
I saw him lift the wineglass and cheers me up. So he was the first to offer. Hmm, why not?
I let out a mischievous smile, then raised my goblet as well. There he stood slightly. And — and—
Oh, God! I think he’s coming in my direction!
