Chapter 1 — Her Child

“Beiyi, after I die, go and look for the child. The child’s father is… Ning Shaochen. Promise me that you won’t… meet him with your true appearance…”
Shen Beiyi stood in the living room of the high-end villa, her mother’s last words reverberating in her mind.
Six years ago, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, so Shen Beiyi became a surrogate at the tender age of 18 to raise the funds needed for her mother’s treatment. After carrying the child for ten months, she gave birth to a baby boy. However, before she could even gaze upon him, he was taken away. Ever since then, her mother had reminded her time and again that she was never to show her true face before people.
Now that her mother had passed away, her only living relative was that child.
“Are you the new nanny?” A man’s deep and alluring voice rang out, catching her off guard.
Startled, Shen Beiyi instinctively raised her head, only to meet a pair of dark and cold eyes that seemed to look right into one’s soul.
This was her child’s father—Ning Shaochen. He slowly descended the stairs, giving off a chilly aristocratic air. While his outer appearance was handsome and bewitching, he exuded danger.
Shen Beiyi quickly lowered her head, not daring to look at him anymore. “Yes, I’m the new nanny, Shen Beiyi.”
“Shen Beiyi, 23 years old. Your father died prematurely, while your mother passed away from cancer last month. Your highest education level is high school…” Ning Shaochen recited her background information by heart. Then, his sharp brows furrowed. “Why are you applying to be a nanny when you’re still so young?”
Even without lifting her head, Shen Beiyi could sense the force of oppression radiating off him. “To take care of my mother, I dropped out during high school. Without any skills, it’s difficult to find a job, and so when I happened to see that the Ning Family was recruiting a nanny without any requirements of academic qualifications, I came to try my luck…”
“It’s difficult to find a job? Then, how did you pay for your mother’s medical expenses in recent years?”
Aware that she’d be under suspicion, Shen Beiyi had prepared a perfect explanation long ago. “I’ve asked my friends and relatives for a loan several times, so I urgently need a job right now to pay off my debts.”
“The Ning Family isn’t the only one who’s recruiting a nanny.”
“Nonetheless, the pay offered by the Ning Family is the highest, and I need money,” Shen Beiyi answered calmly.
Frowning, Ning Shaochen scrutinized the plain-looking woman before him. Although her answer was very sincere and reasonable, the feeling of strangeness within him just wouldn’t go away.
Just when he was about to open his mouth and ask her another question, a servant suddenly hastened down the stairs and reported, “Mr. Ning, Little Young Master is awake and clamoring to see you.”
Ning Shaochen glanced at the time, for he still had an important transoceanic meeting in a while. Thereupon, he raised his head and spoke to Shen Beiyi, “You can only stay if my son accepts you. Do you understand?”
“Yes. I’ll definitely take good care of Little Young Master!” Shen Beiyi’s usually calm and unruffled voice carried a trace of excitement and joy.
As soon as Ning Shaochen had left, the servant urged, “Hurry up and follow me upstairs. Little Young Master is throwing a tantrum, and he’s not easy to mollify.”
Upon hearing that, Shen Beiyi hastily followed her upstairs.
“Little Young Master, please eat something. If you don’t eat lunch, you’ll starve.”
“I’m not eating, so don’t pester me! I want to see daddy!”
As they drew closer to the bedroom, the commotion inside became increasingly audible.
The child’s voice was clear and young. Shen Beiyi unconsciously sped up, a layer of shimmering moisture blanketing her eyes.
This was her son, the son whom she’d been missing for five long years! Finally, I get to see him! Valiantly suppressing her elation and trying her utmost best not to allow any emotion to show on her face, she cast her gaze at the adorable child in the middle of the bed.
The little boy was wrapped in a blanket with only his head showing, his slightly curly hair a tad messy. At this moment, his face was all scrunched up, and his lips tightly pressed together from anger. He looked truly cute.
She’d fantasized about his looks thousands of times, but she never thought that he’d be this ‘delicate’. If it weren’t for the various obvious male features he had, she would have thought that he was a girl, for he looked exactly like a girl, unnaturally beautiful. Precisely speaking, he looked exactly like her.
No doubt, he was her son!
The blood bond between them had her heart trembling violently.
Tightening her fists to rein in her impulse of hugging him, Shen Beiyi greeted him, “Xiaoxi?”
Ning Xiaoxi turned to look at her, his sharp brows furrowing slightly. “Madam, who are you?”
“I’m Shen Beiyi, the new nanny.” Shen Beiyi smiled faintly, but her voice was shaking slightly.
“Come here!” Ning Xiaoxi ordered.
As soon as Shen Beiyi had approached Ning Xiaoxi as requested, he took out a tablet from under his pillow, and his tiny hands keyed in something swiftly. Very quickly, he turned the tablet to face her and said, “Key in your name.”
Shen Beiyi was taken aback when she saw the complicated program on the screen, but still, she complied and keyed in her name.
After about a minute, Ning Xiaoxi placed the tablet aside and raised his head. “Madam Shen, your background information before you’re 18 years old is fake.”
His tone harbored no doubts, and Shen Beiyi froze instantly.
How genius is this kid and his father? Even when her background information was flawless, they could still sense that something was amiss.
With his arms crossed, Ning Xiaoxi stared at Shen Beiyi sternly. “Madam Shen, did you change your background information to seduce my dad?”

Chapter 2 — Gained His Approval

Shen Beiyi stared at Ning Xiaoxi, who was looking wary. Inhaling a deep breath, she crouched and brought herself eye-level to him. “Do you think such an outstanding man like your father will ever be interested in a woman like me? I changed my background information so that I can find a job easier.”
Upon hearing that, Ning Xiaoxi looked her up and down. This new nanny looks and dresses plainly, but she’s much more pleasing to the eye than the previous twenty over women who were all dolled up. “Humph! All women are prone to pretense!” he muttered. Nevertheless, he didn’t ask Shen Beiyi to leave.
He then made his way out of the covers before raising his tiny arms and ordering her, “Change me!”
Gazing at the little boy’s arrogant expression with his head lifted high, Shen Beiyi’s heart melted. She took the shirt and pants beside the bed and dressed him tenderly and meticulously, her eyes shining with undisguised love. “Here, raise your arms.”
Ning Xiaoxi obediently raised his arms and legs as ordered. Actually, he’d learned such a trivial thing as dressing himself long ago, but for some reason, he wanted her to help him change. The scent wafting from her is very soothing and is exactly how a mother would smell like…
“Done!” Shen Beiyi gazed at a newly-changed Ning Xiaoxi with satisfaction. Then, she picked up the bowl on the bedside table and coaxed gently, “You haven’t eaten, have you? Here, I’ll feed you. If you go hungry, you won’t be able to grow taller.”
Ning Xiaoxi snapped back to reality and realized that he’d actually spaced out before this woman. All at once, he frowned. “I don’t need you to feed me!”
“Then, do you want to eat by yourself?”
“I don’t want to eat!”
Shen Beiyi was surprised; he was behaving perfectly fine one second ago, so why did he suddenly throw a tantrum again?
However, when it came to him, she had indefinite patience. “If you don’t eat, you won’t have enough nutrition. And without enough nutrition, you won’t be able to grow taller, you know.”
“Humph! Did you think I’m a three-year-old kid?” Ning Xiaoxi turned his head away crossly. “I said I don’t want to eat, and I mean what I said! Go away and don’t pester me!”
For a long while, the room was silent.
Ning Xiaoxi's heart skipped a beat. Don’t tell me that woman is so impatient that she really decided to leave?
Turning his head surreptitiously, he inwardly breathed a sigh of relief upon glimpsing the person who stood rooted to the spot. Then, he blurted awkwardly, “This tastes awful, so I don’t want to eat it!”
Shen Beiyi, who was contemplating on how to persuade him to eat, immediately perked up and asked, “What do you want to eat? I’ll cook it for you.”
With his tiny head raised high, Ning Xiaoxi demanded, “I want to eat egg noodles without spring onions.”
“Sure! I’ll cook it for you at once!”
At the offices of Ning Group, Ning Shaochen received a heart-warming video, in which Ning Xiaoxi was sitting at the dining table, while Shen Beiyi was sitting beside him and feeding him noodles bit by bit, her eyes filled with love. Although Ning Xiaoxi had a cold expression on his face, his body was tilted slightly toward the person beside him. Plus, he’d asked her for food on his own accord, clearly exhibiting an intimate stance.
‘Young Master Shaochen, it looks like Little Young Master has accepted the new nanny.’
Looking at the message sent by Madam Liu, an elderly servant of his, Ning Shaochen was assailed by an unknown emotion. He’d recruited dozens of nannies for Xiaoxi, but all were driven away by him. Finally, a nanny gained his approval, but it was a person whose identity and motive were suspicious.
He snubbed the remaining half of the cigarette he’d been smoking before dialing a number, his brows creased. “Is Shen Beiyi’s identity really beyond dispute?”
On the other end of the phone, Liu Xu replied in exasperation, “Well, Young Master Ning, you’ve asked this question multiple times, and I’ve already ascertained her identity multiple times as well. It indeed matches the written information, so her background is squeaky clean. Plus, I’ve talked to her and found her to be quite honest. That’s why I recommended her to you. Why, is she trying to seduce you like the previous nannies?”
Previously, many nannies had used the pretext of taking care of his child to deliberately get closer to Ning Shaochen, which Liu Xu was aware of. Hence, he’d investigated Shen Beiyi extremely carefully.
“For the time being, no.”
“I just knew it. If she dared to seduce you when she looks that plain, she really has no self-consciousness.”
“Xiaoxi has accepted her.” Standing up, Ning Shaochen walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows and gazed into the distance.
“Hey, it’s truly rare for somebody to be accepted by that little brat,” Liu Xu complimented. “Why are you so suspicious when it’s a wonderful thing? This is your last chance, so if you miss it, don’t ask me to find someone else for you anymore.”
Ning Shaochen quietly grunted an acknowledgment before he hung up the phone.
He trusted Liu Xu’s abilities. Could it be that it’s truly me who’s too suspicious? Anyway, there are bodyguards and security cameras at the Ning Residence, so I don’t have to worry that the woman would do something untoward…
At night, when Ning Shaochen brought his fiancée, Gao Wen, home with him, they heard faint laughter from the second floor.
“Shaochen, is that Xiaoxi?” the woman with delicate makeup beside Ning Shaochen exclaimed in surprise. “I’ve never heard him laugh.”
At this time, Madam Liu came forward cheerfully. “Yes, this villa had always been quiet and serene as though there weren’t a child here, but look how lively it is now! Beiyi is really something else.”
“Beiyi is…” Gao Wen asked, slightly anxious.
“The new nanny,” Ning Shaochen explained placidly.
Upon hearing his words, Gao Wen’s expression froze for a second, but her gentle smile was back the next moment. When she saw that Madam Liu was holding a plate of fruits to take upstairs, she asked, “Madam Liu, is that for Xiaoxi? I’ll take it upstairs for you since I have a present for him.”

Chapter 3 — Ning Xiaoxi’s Defense

In the bedroom on the second floor…
“Ha ha… Stop it, stop it!” Ning Xiaoxi dodged Shen Beiyi’s ‘attack’ and jumped onto the bed in his attempt to flee.
It was only after his entire small body was under the covers that he demanded with a tense expression, “How dare you tickle me?”
Shen Beiyi ignored his cold expression, extending a hand and pinching his cheek gently instead. “Smile for a bit. You’re a kid, so don’t always be so serious.”
Ning Xiaoxi’s tiny chubby hand slapped her hand away before he declared sternly. “Madam Shen, do you know that you could be dismissed for this? You’re committing a grave offense.”
“Hey, you know the term ‘committing a grave offense’?” Shen Beiyi laughed aloud and reached out with both hands to pinch his chubby cheeks. “I’ll commit a grave offense, then. Come and hit me!”
“Since you asked for it, I’ll dismiss you now!”
“Ha ha!” Shen Beiyi tickled him again. “Go ahead.”
“Ha ha… Stop it! Ha ha…”
Laughter instantly bounced off the walls of the spacious bedroom.
When Ning Shaochen and Gao Wen came in, they saw an adult and a kid rolling on the bed.
At once, Ning Shaochen frowned. “Shen Beiyi, remember your identity here!”
The laughter abruptly ceased.
Upon glimpsing Ning Shaochen standing at the door with a dark expression on his face, Shen Beiyi immediately got out of the bed and bowed her head at him before saying deferentially, “Young Master Ning, I’m sorry. I was just playing with Little Young Master earlier. I apologize.”
“A nanny should behave like a nanny! Who allowed you to take liberties with Xiaoxi?”
“Daddy, don’t blame Madam Shen!” When Ning Xiaoxi heard his voice, he climbed out of the covers at once and stood before Shen Beiyi with his tiny arms outstretched. “I’m the one who asked her to play with me.”
A surge of warmth flooded Shen Beiyi upon seeing the kid’s protective posture, and her gaze, as she looked at him, was filled with love.
It’s this expression again. Ning Shaochen’s brows furrowed even deeper when he saw Shen Beiyi’s eyes shining with maternal love. Why do I feel as though this woman’s gaze is so tender and loving when she looks at Xiaoxi? It’s as though Xiaoxi is her biological son…
Gao Wen saw Shen Beiyi from behind Ning Shaochen and determined that she was in her mid-30s with features that were considered decent, wearing black-rimmed glasses, and her skin listlessly dull. Meanwhile, she was dressed in a plaid shirt that had faded due to multiple washing, gray sweatpants, and black sneakers, giving off an undisguised rustic air.
After learning that this plain woman was the Ning Family’s new nanny, Gao Wen immediately calmed the man beside her gently. “Shaochen, don’t be angry. Xiaoxi hasn’t been in a good mood recently, so now that someone has managed to make him laugh uncharacteristically, you should be rewarding her instead.” After saying that, she turned to Shen Beiyi and said in a friendly manner, “Don’t be afraid, for Shaochen is just too concerned about Xiaoxi. Did you just come today?”
“Yes,” Shen Beiyi replied quickly, only now noticing the woman behind Ning Shaochen. The woman was stunningly beautiful, her dressing exquisite, and her speech elegant. Judging from how intimate she is with Ning Shaochen, she must be his fiancée, which also means that she’s Xiaoxi’s stepmother in the future.
“Please take good care of Xiaoxi.” Gao Wen nodded at her. Then, she took a gift box out of her handbag and bent down to hand it to Ning Xiaoxi. “Xiaoxi, this is the limited edition GPS positioning watch you’ve always wanted. It’s for you, and I hope that you’ll be happy every day.”
Ning Xiaoxi didn’t take it; he turned his head and climbed into the bed before speaking in a muffled voice under the covers, “I’m sleepy, so I’m going to sleep. Madam Shen, turn off the lights.”
“Ning Xiaoxi, where are your manners?!”
“Shaochen, don’t shout at Xiaoxi.” Gao Wen pulled Ning Shaochen out of the room after bidding Ning Xiaoxi goodnight.
When they’d gone downstairs, Gao Wen handed the watch to Ning Shaochen and said in her still gentle voice, “Shaochen, please help me give it to Xiaoxi. I noticed that he’d been in a bad mood these days, so I wanted to buy him something that he likes. I’ve gone to a lot of places before I found this watch.”
While Gao Wen was speaking, her brows were furrowed, and she looked very worried about Ning Xiaoxi. Shen Beiyi, who’d come downstairs with them, took in her expression. This woman seems to be quite good to Ning Xiaoxi. I hope she’ll still love Xiaoxi this much after she’s married to Ning Shaochen…
However, why did she feel as though this woman looked somewhat familiar?
“You spoil him too much,” Ning Shaochen groused in exasperation.
“We’re going to be engaged next month, so we’ll be a family in the future. Thus, it’s something I should do.”
Ning Shaochen gazed at the virtuous Gao Wen, clearly pleased with her consideration.
He then took the gift box from her. The moment he turned to look at Shen Beiyi, the tenderness on his face had vanished into thin air. “Give this to Ning Xiaoxi,” he ordered coldly.
“Yes, Young Master Ning.” Shen Beiyi, who’d been scrutinizing Gao Wen, immediately snapped back to her senses and took the box before heading upstairs.
All of a sudden, a light bulb went off in her mind, and she now remembered that she’d seen this woman before in the hospital, outside the operation theatre. It was she who delivered Ning Shaochen’s sperm personally!
