Chapter 1
Aya's POV
I excitedly ran to announce my pregnancy to my mate when I suddenly froze at the door. And in minutes, my whole world came crashing down.
"I can't believe you plan to accept Sakira, the girl who almost took your life," his Beta, Marcus, said, alarmed.
Alpha Dimitri my mate sighed. "That was just an innocent mistake. Now she needs my help."
"What about Aya? Aren't you afraid she'll find out you're cheating on her with her own cousin?"
Dimitri laughed, a cold indifferent laugh. "I'm not worried about her. I am all she has. If she causes trouble for Sakira, I'll reject her as my mate and throw her out. She's the cause of all this: forced me to banish Sakira over a small accident!"
Through a slit I saw the Beta look at Dimitri with horror. "Banish Aya? The woman who stood by your side when you almost died from Sakira's attack?"
Dimitri dismissed him. "I've never loved Aya. I kept her around because I needed her to be Alpha. Asides that, she's a nobody I'll never allow any inheritance in my pack and in my heart."
"Is that why you've been adding abortive pills in her coffee every morning? So she doesn't get pregnant?"
"Yes. Sakira would feel threatened by Aya's pregnancy."
Cold. No remorse.
I couldn't listen anymore. A sharp growing pain arose in my chest as I slowly walked out of the pack house.
His words were like a sword slashing through me, destroying the very life I had painstakingly built.
All for Sakira.
The same woman who had attempted to poison her own mate several times. Sakira was the type who organized rogues and raided small packs. She once stabbed Dimitri for choosing me over her.
I had stood there beside him when he banished her from the pack.
Yet here he was, drooling over and willing to be the father of another wolf's child. Ready to throw me down a pit like I meant nothing.
No. This was the end of it. I will leave him for good.
Dimitri walked into my room very late, reeking of a foreign feminine scent.
"Aya, I'll be bringing Sakira to stay with us till she gives birth," he said, standing in the middle of the room like he was a stranger.
I didn't stop for a second. "Okay. "
He hesitated. "Are you... sure?"
"Yes. She can also have the entire house if you two want."
His jaws tightened. "Why are you being unnecessarily dramatic and jealous? She's your cousin and needs our help."
I turned to him for a second and all the affection I had for him melted like thin wax. My eyes caught a love bite mark on his neck. Not mine.
I stared into his eyes, searching desperately for the Alpha I had once loved. But all I saw was a man whose heart was attached elsewhere.
"I won't be coming home tonight," I said, fighting the stinging tears. "My mom was attacked by border rogues."
He raised his brows, a bit excitedly. "Sakira can take this room tonight then?"
The air froze for a moment. This bastard didn't bother about my mom's life!
I turned and slammed the door shut.
***
I was in the middle of a delicate surgery for my mother when she spoke with joyful tears in her eyes:
"Does the Alpha know you're pregnant?"
I shook my head, fighting my own tears. "I planned to surprise him, mom. It doesn't matter now."
She understood the message and held my hand in reassurance.
Then the door suddenly opened.
A gamma guard stood menacingly. "Luna Aya, Alpha Dimitri summons you immediately. You have a life to save."
My fingers tightened around the needle. I didn't turn. There were hundreds of other Healers in the pack house.
"I can't leave my mom," I said, both surprised and annoyed.
Two more guards entered. "The Alpha is aware and he wasn't asking."
Ignoring my horrified screams and my dying mother, they dragged me out and carted me to the pack house.
But what I saw made my heart split into two.
Sakira, my cousin, laid on the bed. And my mate, Alpha Dimitri, caressed her pregnant belly, his eyes full of care and affection.
His smile disappeared when he looked at me.
"Sakira needs a foot massage. She wanted none other but you. Get down to business."
The world tumbled around me and images of my dying mother as she bled from her mouth and nose flashed through my head.
What did I just hear?
I turned to Dimitri, my chest burning.
"You knew my mother was attacked by rogues! I am her only chance at survival. Yet you brought me for a... foot massage?"
After a while, he sighed and came close to me. His scent, which once intoxicated me, now felt like a demon's stench.
"When Sakira is fine, I'll send the best healers to your mom. But Sakira needs help too. We don't want anything to harm her baby.
"I don't entirely expect you to understand, since you'll never have a baby of your own."
Chapter 2
Aya's POV
He stopped, knowing he had gone too far. For years, I have battled to get pregnant. He had made me swallow countless bitter pills. I had also undergone many surgeries that knocked me out for weeks.
Not knowing that the pills he gave me were poisoned. They were meant to keep me barren.
When I finally got pregnant, weeks ago, I was brimming with excitement to break the news. Only to hear his discussion with his Beta. The moment that changed everything.
"I'm not touching her," I said with a tone of finality and headed for the door.
"Walk out that door and you'll be choosing between your mom's life and doing what I ask."
Dimitri's voice echoed in my head like a cruel bell, and I remembered how the same woman nurtured him when his parents were nuked. My family fucking built him from scratch!
Sakira then cried out in fake innocence. "I'm so sorry if I'm causing you two quarrels. I shouldn't have come—"
Dimitri cut in, his voice soothing. "Don't be too nice. Aya is a Pack Healer and it's her duty. She should be grateful that you're willing to offer your baby to be her son."
He looked at me, expecting me to jump in grateful excitement. But I remained cold.
Offer me her son? I would train another woman's son who'd later throw me out of my pack?
I caught the triumphant smirk on Sakira's lips. She knew she had won this battle.
But I was not done yet. The baby in my stomach was my final weapon.
I laughed bitterly. "I don't want her damn baby. I have mi—"
I stopped myself, immediately deciding telling them now wasn't worth it.
But when I remembered that the clock was ticking down on my mother, I dropped to my knees and hastily massaged Sakira's feet.
My mom's dying screams echoed in my head, driving me crazy. My tears fell, mixing with the oil.
Sakira suddenly kicked my belly and I heard something come loose within me.
I dropped to the floor, grabbing my stomach in anguish. My mouth turned salty instantly.
I screamed till my voice became hoarse.
Not from the pain, but from fear of something worse. Of what I might have lost.
Dimitri rushed to me, lifting my head in his arms. "If only you hadn't made this about yourself!" he chided.
"Oh, my leg hurts!" Sakira cried out.
He instantly dropped me and ran to her.
I laid there, writhing in pain mixed with panic and shock.
When I suddenly felt blood trickling down my legs, I passed out.
***
I woke up surrounded by pack healers. Pain shot through my body as I tried to sit.
But it was nothing compared to the words of the healers:
"I'm sorry, Luna. We tried all we could to save the child."
My whole world fell apart. This child was the only thing I lived for. I had vowed to protect and nurture it even without the love of a father.
Now all of it was gone.
"How about my mother? Have the assigned Healers given a report?" I sobbed, desperately hoping for good news.
But the Healers exchanged confused glances and shrugged their shoulders. "The Alpha never assigned any of us. We asked him several times but he forced us to watch Sakira as she slept, saying she might need our services anytime."
Tears rushed down my eyes as a messenger ran in. "Your mom is... dead."
I staggered to my feet and my knees gave way. I closed my eyes as darkness descended into my world.
In one day, I lost the most important persons in my life.
Without hesitation, I fired a red flare I had hidden all these years.
The sky lit up with a secret message.
Miles away, Alpha Zoro looked up and smiled.
"She finally realized. Wolves! Let's go reclaim what's ours."
Chapter 3
Aya's POV
Five years ago, Alpha Zoro left his pack because his Luna, me, had turned him down for Dimitri.
He begged me with tears in his eyes. He loved me so dearly. But I was blinded by pity and fear that Dimitri would harm himself from depression.
Dimitri was a weak-willed, heartbroken addict, battered by Sakira's infidelity. He needed the Alpha position so badly. It would save his life.
So I had substituted as his Luna, and Zoro stepped back for his younger brother. The night he left, Zoro privately gave me a flare. "Fire it when you've changed your mind."
He left quietly, refusing to fight his brother.
We all sacrificed our lives for Dimitri!
But now, I could see through the veil.
---
Minutes after the flare, Dimitri arrived at the hospital and hugged me. His sudden concern surprised me.
"I saw that flare and thought you were under attack. I knew you were calling for me."
I almost laughed. How pathetic.
He kissed my hand gently, examined my body and lifted me into the cart.
But my mind was already made up.
"Alpha Dimitri, I have something to tell you."
Though my wolf was bleeding, I had to reject Dimitri as my mate.
He touched my face and smiled affectionately.
But just as I opened my mouth, a servant stopped our cart. "Alpha! Sakira is in labor."
The affection vanished. He beat the horses and their speed tripled.
But he wasn't satisfied. He glanced at me.
"You've become fat, slowing this down!" he growled, disgust thick in his eyes.
"What— I"
He kicked me off the speeding cart.
I tumbled down the rocky path, my skin cutting in several places.
I lay there in the freezing lonely night, bleeding. In severe pain.
I dragged myself to the pack house and found Sakira laughing, casually sipping from an expensive wine. She wasn't in labor. Another drama.
Dimitri would never respond to my distress calls, even though I was dying.
Alpha Dimitri, seeing my body covered in wounds, rushed over, apologizing profusely. He lifted me into my room and assigned Healers for me.
"I apologize for what happened. I was scared I wouldn't arrive on time," he said while fixing me dinner.
I ignored him, remaining cold against his care. Thereafter, I drove the Healers out.
I was crying with my mother's framed photo when Sakira sauntered in. Her lips were curved in a triumphant smile.
"I sent flowers to your mom's grave," she said. "I had them quickly bury her. I couldn't risk you coming to revive her."
My heart stopped for a moment. "You buried my mother without confirming her death?"
Sakira laughed heartily. "Come on, I was helping you, dear cousin. Your mom was a distraction from your Luna duties. Dimitri complains to me.
"If you value an old woman over your sacred responsibilities, then you're not fit to be the Alpha's mate."
"You fucking buried a living person!" I shouted, the insanity of it eating into my soul.
Sakira laughed. "Yes, and there's nothing you can do about it other than shout. The Alpha, your so-called mate, is on my side.
"You're alive today because I haven't ordered for your death yet. Don't push me, Aya."
She leaned forward, caressing her belly.
"I knew you were pregnant. That kick was calculated. And if I discover that it didn't do the job, I'll take more drastic measures."
"Sakira..." I tried to speak.
"Shut it, I'm not done. You're just a fucking nobody latching onto him now because he has become biggest Alpha known to the province!"
I remembered Alpha Zoro and laughed bitterly. "Dimitri is not even fit to be my servant. I made him who he is and I can destroy him with a snap of my finger. He knows."
Her face changed. "Your miserableness has gotten into your head!"
I ignored her and walked to the door. That's when I heard a crash.
A framed painting. The only one I had of my mom and I.
Sakira spilled wine on it and crushed it beneath her heels. "Oops. I guess you won't be needing that anymore,” she chuckled, gently caressing her bulging stomach.
She waited for a reaction, an outburst. But I quietly gathered the shards, each piece mirroring the state of my heart.
The next thing I heard was a sharp cry from her. I turned to see that her wrist was suddenly covered in blood and she held a glass piece.
The lunatic had cut herself!
"Alpha!" she cried with all her strength, falling to the ground. She threw me a “you're dead” glance, and kept screaming.
Dimitri blazed in, fiery eyes.
"I was just trying to make peace, but she attacked me," Sakira cried out, secretly winking at me.
Dimitri immediately turned to me, his poise ready to attack.
But my next words made him freeze:
"Lay your hands on me, Dimitri, and I'll reject you here and now. You know what that means."
He knew. So his countenance changed.
Behind, Sakira was stunned. "Do something! Are you afraid of this scumbag's threat?"
But the Alpha knew I was no scumbag.
His eyes were fixed on me, his confidence rapidly peeling apart.
He fucking knew!
