Chapter 1
LEONIE
“Leonie, you’ve been handpicked by the entire team to lead this research team, to unravel the truth surrounding the northern lineage.”
My eyes widened in shock as the words sank into my head, and I shot to my feet at once.
“B- but sir, that place is cursed and lack any h-”
He held up a finger instantly, halting my sentence.
“Those are just baseless rumors, I expected better from someone like you. Didn’t realize you’re dumb enough to believe something like a curse actually exists.
I averted my gaze and gulped emptily while replaying all the things I’ve heard about the northern lineage. Some say it’s a land of monsters. Others say it’s a place where so many curses lurk around. I can’t believe my shitty luck would make the leader of the team finally remember my name when it comes to a particular mission no one wants to be on.
“Can someone else lead instead? Even though the rumors are baseless, I don’t think I’m comfortable enough to lead, sir.” I spoke next, spitting out the last word.
“I’m afraid that’s impossible, Leonie. If you choose to go against the order, then you can kiss your position in the team goodbye.”
This used to be my dream job since I was very little. I studied really hard in school and knew how much I fought before getting to where I am today--The Sand and Dunes Archeology Institute. Any sensible person wouldn’t throw that away just because they don’t want to lead a mission, and the leader knows it, cunning bastard that he is.
“Say what? After this research, I’d definitely give you a boost, and you’d get to lead more researches.”
“Fine, I’ll do it.”
——
I sighed dejectedly as I walked back to my desk, the day isn’t going as great as I expected it to.
I was lucky because I was given the grace to choose someone to go with me, I sighed as I thought about who amongst my colleagues would want to go, I needn’t think any further when I remembered Athena and Bayern.
When I’d broken the news to them, they were overly excited.
They thought it thrilling to go to research about an abandoned habitat.
“Cheer up a little, who knows this might turn out to be a really interesting research.” Bayern said in a cheery voice that made me roll my eyes.
“Yeah, we could encounter a lot of things and a curse? We might get turned into animals as well, it’s definitely worth writing about.” Athena chimed in and I groaned.
“I’m only going because I don’t want to stay back. I just want to see things for myself.” I lied. I was only going because I had no other choice. It was literally a threat; I go or I lose my job.
Heavens help me.
~~~
“I have no idea why they want a report on this region.” I muttered beneath my breath as we made our way into the abandoned looking place that reeks of solitude.
I still wasn’t comfortable with the idea of uncovering what might simply not want to be uncovered.
I joined my colleagues in Northern Switzerland an hour ago and we got to work immediately because we wanted to exist here as fast as possible.
“This could be us making a fool of ourselves.” I sighed as my friends stopped walking to look at me, raising an eyebrow. They only did that when they wanted me to stop talking.
We walked around as everywhere was silent and the only sound that could be heard was our hushed breathing and the rustling of leaves as we stepped on it.
I soon started getting the hang of it as I didn’t expect to see a lot of interesting creatures.
The leaves and the trees looked a little different too, I took every detail as I possibly could as I walked around.
I noticed a deer but at the sight of my light, it ran off, I followed it impulsively out of curiosity and I let out a slight moan of happiness when I saw it with its families.
There were different species of snakes too that I hadn’t expected to come across. I’d noticed something huge running right past me and I’d wanted to ask if my colleagues did too but they were too busy doing their own research to notice anything.
I followed it with my small torch that helped me see through the night.
I followed the snake that I could’ve sworn I saw till I couldn’t find it anymore. I stopped to catch my breath as I panted.
The only thing I had with me was my torch, backpack, my jotter and a pen. I knew there was no way for me to protect myself if I got into any form of danger.
“Son of a bitch.” I said through paced breaths, I’d really thought I was on to something when I saw how huge it was.
After resting for a while and catching my breath, I turned back to join my friends but I couldn’t recognize where I was any longer, the place looked strange and my friends were nowhere to be found.
“Hello?” I called but the only thing that got back to me was my voice. I looked around in horror as I couldn’t see anything in sight, my torch flickered a little and I silently prayed that it would last long enough to help me get out of here.
I looked around as I tried to make out where I was, it was not until my legs hit something and I’d almost fell that I noticed that I was in a cave, my hand touched the wall for support and where I was before, there was no wall in sight.
How did I get into this cave? I had lots of questions running through my mind as I wandered aimlessly in the cave in a bid to find my way out. I saw some strange things and despite being lost, I wasn’t going to let my horror take over me.
I reached for my pen and paper as I jotted down a few things, from the huge snake that I saw that now seems to have disappeared to being in a strange abode. My torch flickered again but was soon back to working perfectly when I tapped it a few times.
“I should’ve packed some extra batteries.” I sighed to myself as I continued my long walk but wherever I turned to usually seem to always take me back to where I started.
After a little while, I started to panic. I had no idea where I am, and my friends are also nowhere to be found. If I’d known, I would’ve stuck with them instead of allowing my curiosity lead me astray.
I shouldn’t have followed that strange creature without giving my friends a heads up, we should’ve stayed together as a team.
“Where the hell am I?” I whispered to myself as I lifted my torch to see some words inscribed on the wall. I didn’t care about it as all I wanted to do at the moment was to get the hell out of there.
“Athena?!” I shouted loud enough that I knew if there was any other creature in this dead looking place, they would hear me but just like the other time, no one answered, just my own voice coming back to me.
“Bayern?” I shouted again, not giving up.
I felt the bead of sweat flow down my face as my eyes welled up. If I spent another minute in the cave, I just knew I wouldn’t be the same again.
I kept walking in the same direction that seemed to be bringing me back to my previous position, only that this time I was in a different place.
I wasn’t going back to where I started, I was going to different places but they all looked alike. The light that seemed to be coming from the end of the cave made me have a flicker of hope as I made my way happily through it.
I ran my hands through the wall and just like the other time, I felt something inscribed on it. I switched my torch on to check it and this time the writing inscribed on the wall looked even scarier.
I didn’t know what it was but it sent chills down my spine. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me as I stepped into the light and it didn’t just look like a familiar place.
In fact, it looked like a new place entirely. I quickly glanced behind me and a gasp flew past my lips on realizing I couldn’t see the end of the cave which I had just emerged from.
My fast beating heart has climbed into my throat at this point.
I slowly glanced around my surroundings, eyes widening even more in shock and surprise, it was as though the moment I stepped out of the cave to where the light was coming from, I had left earth into another planet entirely.
Which would be an absurd thing to even consider, if it wasn’t currently happening to me right now.
A quick glance at the sky made one sentence reecho in my head.
I was definitely in another world.
Chapter 2
LEONIE
Everything here looked entirely different from what I was used to seeing in situations like this– situations that warranted me to wander around for research purposes.
But, right now, I saw things that I barely recognize, things I’m very certain I’ve only seen in my dreams, and frankly, they were never this beautiful or vivid in my dreams.
The sky gleamed like an artist had splashed a whole lot of a few colors together to achieve this final look, along with sprinkling a lot of glitter over it.
But, that was about where the fairy tale look ended.
Scattered around were a lots of tunic and cloaks and not only that, I noticed some painted terracotta slabs, and carved funerary monuments, it all seemed unreal and extremely old.
Right around me, was a very wide expanse of forest that honestly looked too scary for me to get an excited trill from.
I felt something brush against my leg and I looked to see what it was as something else caught my attention, the color of the sand on the ground was also different, I’d tried to tell the color but I could barely tell it properly even though there was light.
I bent over to pick it up and it felt kind of warm too, like something hot had been placed on it. I examined the sand carefully and it looked really beautiful. It wasn’t the usual white or brown sand, it was the color blue.
Everything in this part of the world that I was standing looked too beautiful to be true, everything unusual but something about it seemed peaceful. I continued my walk as I decided to look around. I had better make the best of my current unbelievable and laughable situation right now.
I picked the cloaks that were hung as I examined them too carefully.
I’d completely forgotten about my pen and jitters as I took in everything in this whole new world, it looked nothing like anything I’ve seen before and they all amused me, it all left me yearning for more.
Just when I was about to take a look at one of the beautiful old jewelry I’d found, I heard a strange noise. It was unfamiliar but it sounded like an angry wild animal, it sounded like it knew someone strange was in its territory.
Not thinking, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me in the other direction in search of the safest place to hide. I knew why I didn’t want to come for this research in the first place.
I’ve just been here how many minutes and it looks like I wouldn’t be making it back alive, I’d lost my friends, I had no idea where I was and I’d just angered one of the wide animals by entering its territory.
“It probably just wants me alive now so it could make a meal out of me.” I whispered to myself fearfully as I kept trying to find somewhere to hide, my breathing was fast and I placed my palm on my mouth to stop me from breathing so loudly so whatever it was wouldn’t find me as I stopped for a while.
“Oh shit!” I yelled as I looked back to find some animals running in my direction, not thinking and a terrified whimper slipped past my lips as I slapped my hand over it hastily while my eyes bulged out.
On realizing the animals were closing in on me, I got out of the safe space I thought I found to continue running.
I had no idea where I was running to but I knew I wasn’t going to stay and try to find out what they would do to me if they caught up with me.
The animals looked so huge and frighteningly terrifying from the little glances I was able to get of them.
I didn’t seem fast enough as they were almost catching up with me, I felt my heart beat race even faster and it wasn’t because of how fast I was running, it was more because of how scared I was.
“Oh god please let me out of here alive.” I cried silently as I continued my race to nowhere in particular. I didn’t know anywhere around here and so I didn’t know where I was heading to.
I heard another growl and it was as though the earth was quaking as the thunderous howl caused me to cry out in fear as shivers ran down my spine, I looked back to see how far I was from them that I didn’t know when I ran into a wall, I bounced back and fell but I wouldn’t wait.
I’d almost broken my nose but that was absolutely better than getting eaten up alive, I couldn’t count how much I tripped but I knew my legs were giving up on me as my toes were already numb, my feet were tired and I was getting slower.
I couldn’t help the tears that ran down my cheeks as I panted but kept running, I knew I was getting slower but I ignored the feeling of my body trying to give up on me as I kept running.
Just when I’d thought I was approaching a safe zone, I felt something on my back that caused me to fall down and it turned me around, I’d never seen an animal as scary as the one in front of me right.
“Oh fuck! Oh God!” I couldn’t help my scream and it looked as though the animal in front of me was enjoying it as I sensed a little bit of amusement in its countenance.
“Please don’t kill me, I’m only here for some research and not to kill you,” I rambled on like it could hear what I was saying. I usually talk to dogs and cats back at home, and since this one hasn’t killed me yet, I thought it could hear what I was saying and would be kind enough to let me go.
“I didn’t mean to be in your territory, I swear please just let me go, let me find my friends and you would never see me anywhere near you again!” I kept talking as I cried, desperately begging for my life.
I never imagined myself talking to a wild animal and worse, begging for my life. I only see things like this in the movies and I never thought I would ever see it in real life, much less experience it first hand.
The fact that the animal was still on me and hadn’t hurt me was as surprising as it was shocking, I heard twigs breaking and I looked around to see more animals that looked like… wolves? these ones came out of the forest, only that—-
They were morphing into humans as they approached, I closed my eyes and mentally slapped myself as I thought I was seeing things because I was at the brink of death but when I opened my eyes back, I realized that I was indeed seeing right.
These animals were really turning to humans, they were humans that turned to animals or animals that turned to humans?!
My mouth was hanging open as I stared at them in shock and they returned my stare as though they were all surprised to see me or were disgusted by me?
My thoughts kept running through my mind as I tried to wrap my head around what I had just saw.
“Evil has found us and it has come to us, it has come to ruin things once again, to take our world from us.” I heard a voice that seeped through my mind like some sort of liquid as it jolted me out of my thoughts.
I looked around to search for who had spoken and I saw one of them looking really angry as he pointed a finger to me, I had no idea why he’d calmed me evil but whatever it is, his colleagues weren’t really happy about it.
I looked around and I just knew something didn’t feel right, they were all really angry although I had no reason why they were.
I didn’t know why I’d came in here, I should’ve ignored the snake, the light and maybe, just maybe I’ll still be with my friends right now.
I watched as they stomped towards me, their countenance wasn’t really friendly and the fear if thought was gone came crippling back as one of them grabbed my hair.
“Please,” I begged while tears streamed down my eyes, “I’m not evil, I didn’t come for anyone, I’m a researcher and I’m only here on an assignment, I don’t even know how I made it over here, I swear it.” I pleaded with them as I tried to reach for my backpack but they all made to attack me at once, causing me to freeze in fear.
“I’m sorry please, just let me go and I swear I won’t come back here again, I got lost and I don’t know how I got here.” I tried to explain in hopes that they would understand me.
But that didn’t, they were all interested in killing me instead rather than having me alive.
“What should we do to you?” One of them asked and I took that as my ticket to salvation, I was going to plead for a passage back to my world.
“Just let me go and—“
“Shut up!” Another one interrupted me mid sentence just as a firm slap landed on my cheeks, making my head whipped sideways. His voice made me jump and tremble harder in fear as my cheek burned from the slap.
Just what in God’s name have I gotten myself into?
“Please.” I cried, not trying to be strong anymore as I covered my face with my palm on the ground, it was almost as though I was bowing to them.
I just wanted them to let me go back home, I missed a lot of things and I didn’t want to be here in the first place, I should’ve fought harder to be somewhere else but here for the stupid research.
“You. Evil. Very bad, you’re evil itself.” Another snarled at me through gritted teeth. I flinched in fear on getting a glimpse of sharp looking fangs that scared me out of my wits.
“No, no, I’m not, I’m Leonie and I only came for a research, I’ll show you.” I tried to explain again as I hurriedly cleaned my damp face with my dirty palm that was filled with the now darkened but still blue sand.
I pulled out my jotter and pen and one of them had taken it away from me angrily as he threw it back at me, letting it hit my face hard.
There was nothing I could say that would make those creatures change their minds, they all hated me and my presence angered them.
“We’ll burn you as a sacrifice to the moon goddess!” I heard another sneer.
Burns me as a sacrifice? To the——
Moon goddess?
Chapter 3
LEONIE
I watched in confusion and cries helplessly as they yanked me up and pulled me so I was following them, I didn’t have much of a choice than to follow their lead, feeling like a weak sacrificial lamb.
We got to a building and I could immediately tell that it was a palace as it looked very magnificent and had a very beautiful structure. The interior was designed brilliantly too with sculptures and beautiful gems.
I looked around in awe although I was still terrified as one of them had talked about burning me as a form of sacrifice to some sort of moon goddess, everything looked confusing to me and I could only hope I made it out alive.
I was thrown on the floor as I lifted my gaze to see a man seated on what seemed like a throne, he must be the king of these animals.
“Here is the intruder, Alpha.” One of them spoke as he attempted to kick me but my terrified whimper made the man whom they’d referred to as the Alpha raise a finger, causing him to stop.
“Where did you find her?” He asked, his voice husky but his words were brilliant, they came out cleaner than the rest of them.
“In the north of our territory, she broke the shield, Alpha Gunnolf Royale.” Another answered, making sure to call the man by his full name.
Alpha?
As in ‘teen wolf’ level kind of alpha?
That shit had been real all these while.
And what’s that about a shield?
I hastily tried to comprehend what was going on but it was all too confusing and happening so fast that it was hard to keep up. The fact that I’d tried to comprehend all these caused me an intense headache that made me shake in fear.
What would my fate be? Would I really be burnt alive? Can I be forgiven? What even was my crime? Will I be thrown back to Switzerland and get a second chance at life?
I lifted my gaze and something about the countenance of this Alpha Gunnolf Royale doesn’t look too pleasing, I lowered my gaze as I swallowed hard.
Everything going on had made it extremely difficult for me to have control of my own body as I couldn’t control the spit I’d tried to swallow, it took a while before I could shove it down my throat.
I watched as he made his way towards me slowly and carefully, he’d approached me as though he was approaching some sort of weird specimen, meanwhile they were the ones who could shift into animals… or were animals who could shift into humans.
He crouched before me and it felt like his presence alone was so powerful, everyone around me, including myself, cowered in fear.
I swallowed again when he let out a quiet, displeased sound that made my spine straightened as I froze up. I attempted to crawl backwards but his finger which came up to grasp my chin killed that thought instantly and a terrified scream tore past my lips while my heart pounded hard against my chest.
He didn’t seem fazed by my scream and I made sure to look everywhere but his eyes. That didn’t last long because he jerked my chin upwards till I had no choice but to stare into his bloodshot eyes while my hands trembled by my sides. A snarl left his mouth and I flinched, he looked as though he could tear me apart with just his fingers dug into the skin of my chin, causing me to let out a painful wince.
He was on his feet after that, and before I could blink, his fingers dug into my hair.
He grabbed me by my hair and pulled me up, causing me to let out another terrified cry as my body rose like a wood. I pleaded for him to let go of me, he was hurting me and I knew he was aware of it.
He jerked me against him and it felt like I might vomit my heart at any next second due to how frightened I was. His grip on my hair was so tight that it caused my scalp to hurt intensely as he yanked my head forward once again, jerking my head sideways in the next second to my confusion.
Is this the part where he tears me apart with his animal teeth?
“Please don’t kill me.” I begged as I closed my eyes while tears slid my cheeks.
I just wanted to live and I had no other priority than that at this point.
I opened my eyes and flinched on taking in the sight before me, just as I felt a gust of hot breath against my collarbone. Alpha Gunnolf Royale’s nose was grazing my neck and I nose definitely didn’t know what to make of that.
I could feel his breath fan against the exposed side of my neck and I clenched my hands in fear, flinching on hearing him inhale sharply.
He sniffed so hard that if it were possible for him to have taken me into his nose, he would have, he let out a small ‘hmm’ as he removed his nose from my neck and I thought it was over but he placed it back and sniffed my neck again, nose brushing against my neck and making me silently wonder if this was some sort of normal behavior between these animal-humans people.
I’d thought it was my body wash that caught his attention because I made sure to use the strawberry and cherry scented one. I never expected that a total stranger would notice it and like it so much.
I felt his finger trace my face down to my neck as he grabbed me by my neck and pulled me closer to him, I closed my eyes again and I could swear that he could hear my heartbeat.
Perhaps they were no longer going to kill me, I hoped.
My heart was racing in fear of what my fate would be as this king hadn’t stopped examining me, I had no idea for how long I’d been crying for but I felt my tear drop and a little had dropped on his shirt.
I wished I could turn back the ends of time and then I would’ve told my boss right into his face that I wasn’t going anywhere near the Northern lineage where he had assigned me.
“I promise I mean no harm, I mean no evil or danger, I’m just here for some of the research I do, please just let me go—“ I sounded like a broken record as all I heard myself doing most of the time was plead for mercy and beg so I wouldn’t be burnt as a sacrifice for the night goddess, or was it moon goddess? Or be killed brutally for trespassing.
“Mate—“ he called into my ear and I felt a new sense of fear overwhelming me as he instantly released my hair from his grip, causing me to fall back on my knees.
My knees were weak already from running so much, and this fall only made them ache some more.
What does being called mate even mean? Was it some sort of thing they call people whom they thing smelled nice? Or what they call people they’re about to kill? Whatever it means, It didn’t sound good as the word had left the alpha’s mouth with so much venom.
I finally gave up as I sat on the ground and sobbed even harder, I was really scared now and it wasn’t just because of the possibility of me being killed. I was scared of something else as well, something I had no idea about.
“Please just let me go, please, I don’t want to be here.” I cried as I tried to tug on his pants but he took to bending in front of me once again, the sight of the scowl on his face sent another round of fear through my body once again.
He grabbed me by my throat this time and I placed my hands on his without thinking. I gagged and tried to beg that he release me because it was getting difficult to breath with his huge palm around my neck but the words felt stuck in my throat.
“Say another word if you want to die right now! Go on, say one more word, I’ll kill you!” He bellowed as his eyes somehow managed to turn red in nothing but utter anger. When he released me, a sob tore out of my throat.
I coughed as I gasped for air and tried to catch on to the life that had been about to leave the rest of my body, he was still crouching in front of me as I tried to look away but he grabbed my face and turned my attention back to him.
My face was filled with terror as I did nothing to hide my fear, what I was experiencing was nothing like I’ve ever experienced.
“You’re a prisoner here now and there’s no one here that would get you out of this place,” he snarled at me as he let out a wicked laugh, “You dare wander into my territory and somehow managed to take down the shield, but not only that!” He shouted as he stood up and I gulped fearfully.
“You dare turn out to be my mate too!” He added in a roar that caused the entire palace to shake as his voice echoed and it caused me to have terrified goosebumps, gear gripped me as he spoke and I suddenly felt dizzy.
The word ‘mate’ was lost on me at this point.
He crouched before me once again, grabbing my face in his palm, his fingers digging into both my cheeks painfully, obviously hell bent on causing me pain, while he quietly stared into my eyes for what seemed like hours before letting go of my face.
He was probably already tired of seeing me cry but he already said he wouldn’t let me go and he doesn’t look like one to go back on his words.
“Throw her in the dungeon.” He ordered my imprisonment as he turned his back against me, I thought I didn’t hear clearly until his supposed guards pulled me up and started yanking me but I struggled as I pleaded for my life.
I had no idea what would happen to me in the dungeon and I didn’t want to find out.
“Please, please Mr Alpha,” I cried, “I’m sorry, really sorry for coming into your territory disrespectfully, I’m sorry for being your mate– whatever that means, I’m really sorry for all this, Sir Alpha, please. Just let me go, please, I beg of you, I promise not to ever set foot here again forever just please let me go.” I pleaded but he didn’t turn to look at me.
He outrightly ignored me and turned deaf ears to all of my pleas as his guards pulled me away. I kept crying as I struggled to be freed from their grasp and hoped that he would at least turn to look at me and order that they let me go.
He didn’t turn not even once to acknowledge me as the guards dragged me away and my voice faded into an abyss, they soon dumped me in a damp dungeon that smelled unpleasantly.
It reeked of piss and the stench hit me as soon as they opened the door. The guards threw me in without a moment's hesitation as they closed the gate and walked away, leaving me to my plight and fate.
What should I do? How would I ever possibly get out of this horrible place?
What was going to become of my life now?
