Chapter 1 — The Alpha King?
Elizabeth Wood's POV:
A girl said, "Useless waste. Can't even awaken your wolf. I don't know how you have the nerve to sit in class with us."
A boy echoed, "No wonder you were exiled from the Snowmoon Pack. Born into an alpha family, yet you're weaker than an omega."
As usual, after the evening training session, I sat on the concrete steps reviewing my potion books.
The students passing by never missed a chance to throw insults my way.
They seemed to take endless pleasure in it. I really didn't see the point.
"That's not the main thing. The real reason she was kicked out of the Snowmoon Pack was..." Suddenly, a blonde girl walked over and whispered something to them.
After that, their eyes looked at me like I was filth, hurling words like "slut" and "trash" in my direction.
Elizabeth! I can't take this anymore! Let me out there and teach them a lesson! My Wolf Spirit, Emma, bared her fangs in a furious growl within my Consciousness Sea, desperate to tear apart the scum insulting me.
Normally, I couldn't be bothered to stir up trouble.
But today, my Scent-Shield Potion formula had failed, and I was in a foul mood.
With a sharp snap, I closed my book, stood up, and fixed them with a cold stare.
The group instinctively took a step back.
Realizing it, their faces instantly twisted with anger.
Being intimidated by someone they called a waste was hardly a proud moment.
"What do you think you're doing? Looking for a fight?" a boy shouted.
Another boy said, "Go ahead then. Let's see how a worthless..."
I snapped my fingers. Instantly, all sound around us vanished, and the world seemed to freeze.
This was Emma's unique power—Time Freeze.
It only lasted a minute, but a minute could change a lot.
On a dangerous battlefield, it was enough to turn the tide!
Give me control! I'm going to teach them a lesson! Emma cheered excitedly in the Consciousness Sea.
Emma was a white wolf, unbound by normal werewolf hierarchy and possessed of special abilities. To avoid trouble, I usually kept her suppressed.
But during Time Freeze, I could let her out for a bit.
I handed control over to Emma. In a flash, she gleefully bounded on all fours into the group that had mocked me, knocking them around like bowling pins.
Just before the minute ended, I took control back.
Without a glance at the bruised and battered figures on the ground, I got on my bike and headed home.
The whole way, I couldn't help but smile, imagining those idiots with their swollen faces, scrambling around cluelessly for their attacker.
Suddenly, a faint scent of blood hit my nose, followed by the dull thud of fists meeting flesh.
A fight up ahead?
Five minutes later, just as expected, I came across a fierce brawl deep in an alley.
A dozen tall, wild-looking werewolves were surrounding a single man—imposing and extraordinary even from a distance.
My attention was instantly captured by him.
He was covered in wounds, his clothes torn, blood staining his face. Yet it didn't make him look weak. Instead, it added a fierce, wild strength.
Under the grime and blood, his handsome features were like something from a legend—Apollo come to life.
This face wasn't unknown to the public. This striking man was a regular on congressional telecasts.
He was Theodore White, Alpha of the Nightshade Pack—the strongest pack in the Werewolf Continent of Mystara—and the Alpha King of all werewolves on the continent.
But the Nightshade Pack was in Newmoor City. What was Alpha Theodore doing here in the remote Frostveil City? And so badly injured? I could see he was nearing his limit.
"Get lost if you want to live!" one of the werewolves assaulting Theodore roared, shooting me a look brimming with impatience and scorn.
That hateful look again!
Irritation flared inside me once more.
"You're blocking the path," I said coldly.
"Looking to die." The lead werewolf lost his patience. With a glance at his companions, two large werewolves started cracking their knuckles as they moved toward me.
As they got closer, I spotted the Thorn Crest on their sleeves.
How interesting! They were werewolf mercenaries.
But then, anyone daring to attack Theodore wouldn't be ordinary.
I wasn't about to stand there and wait for them.
As they closed in, I stepped hard on the bike pedals and shot straight toward them.
I accelerated sharply. The bike surged forward like an unbridled stallion, slamming into the snarling werewolf in front.
The impact was brutal. He was thrown to the ground, several others tumbling down behind him in a chaotic heap!
Seizing the moment, I planted my hands on the bike seat, spun my body, and kicked out with both feet, catching another werewolf attacking from the side square in the face.
The lead werewolf's eyes turned cold and predatory. "Kill them both! Theodore is alone and poisoned—he can't use his wolf's strength. We don't have much time. If the Nightshade Pack finds us, we lose our only chance to finish him!"
So it was kill or be killed. I already had enough trouble. The last thing I needed was to tangle with werewolf mercenaries.
I planned to find a way to slip away from the fight. But as I passed Theodore, my eyes met his for a split second.
Suddenly, the sounds around me faded. The scene before me seemed to recede. The whole world shrank until it contained only him.
My heart raced, beating so fast it felt unreal.
Chapter 2 — The Hybrid Girl
Theodore's POV:
"Mate..." My teeth chattered slightly as the word slipped out, an unconscious murmur toward the girl.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from her. She exerted a unique pull on me.
At twenty-seven, I still hadn't met my fated mate.
But this hybrid girl stirred something different in me. The moment I saw her, my mind went blank. Every cell in my body came alive, buzzing with a sudden, fierce energy.
If I hadn't been poisoned, I could have let my wolf, Flex, recognize her right then. He'd know if she was the one.
But Flex was badly wounded and hidden away, protecting me.
I'd come to Frostveil City with a small team to investigate a vicious vampire attack. We were keeping a low profile. I'd posted my wolves at the city's exits to prevent the culprit's escape.
Then, just minutes after I was alone, a group of high-tier werewolf mercenaries surrounded me and attacked.
I realized instantly. Frostveil City was a trap. This was a planned assassination.
To make it worse, these mercenaries had poisoned their own bodies so their claws carried wolfbane.
Now, nearly every wound on me was infected with the toxin!
My movements grew slower and heavier. Finally, I couldn't even reach my wolf.
Right at that moment of despair, she appeared.
Simple school uniform, a face free of makeup—it only made her look more striking.
Maybe she sensed something. The bike she was about to speed away on screeched to a halt.
She stared at me. A few seconds later, she dropped the bike. She wanted to help me! But... no! I could smell the human blood in her. She was a hybrid. She couldn't take on these high-tier mercenaries!
By the Moon Goddess, I couldn't let her risk herself. I tried to summon my last strength to rush over, but then I saw...
Her combat skills were far beyond anything I'd imagined.
She easily disarmed two werewolves, took their daggers, used the momentum for a clean backflip to land, and drove the blades into their throats.
Blood sprayed. A few drops hit her cheek. She wiped them away without a second thought. So damn cool! If the situation weren't so dire, I'd have whistled.
But soon, the dozen or so werewolves closed in on her again.
"Look out!" I shouted, unable to move.
I saw her shift back into a fighting stance.
Blood loss made my vision darken. The sounds of the fight grew muffled. Only the pounding of my own heart hammered against my eardrums.
After one final, heavy thud of a body hitting the ground, I faintly heard the girl's cold voice.
"Leaving now. Don't thank me," she said.
I forced my eyes open. The world was a haze of burning red. The werewolf mercenaries who had attacked me were all down.
The girl swung onto her bike, her movements casual, yet as beautiful as the Moon Goddess herself.
She was about to leave. I couldn't let us part like this.
Gathering the very last of my strength, I reached out and clamped my hand onto the back of her bike seat.
"You need something else?" She turned her head, her tone dripping with impatience.
"Your name." That was all I managed to ask before everything went black, and I lost consciousness completely.
Elizabeth's POV:
"Damn it. Just my luck." I took a deep breath, looking at Alpha Theodore, who had collapsed without warning. All I wanted was to get out of there.
Chapter 3 — Surgery
Elizabeth's POV:
I didn't know why I had helped him. I hated trouble more than anything. But... I glanced at the unconscious Alpha Theodore. Finally, I got off my bike to examine his wounds.
His body was covered in nasty gashes from blades and wolf claws, but none were immediately fatal.
The worst was a gunshot wound dangerously close to his heart. The bullet was a silver one, made for hunting werewolves. One millimeter to the side, and he would have been gone for good.
But... Theodore was the Alpha King. His healing ability should have been much stronger than an ordinary werewolf's. How had he ended up in such bad shape?
I immediately tore open the ragged fabric over his chest. Blood was still oozing from the wound.
The blood was a sickening, dark black.
Wolfbane!
No wonder his werewolf healing wasn't working.
Wolfbane destroyed a werewolf's regenerative power and whole system. The blood of a poisoned werewolf turned black. Without timely treatment, it was fatal.
I let out a long sigh. He was, after all, the Alpha King of the Mystara Continents. I couldn't just let him die here.
Resigned, I hauled him onto the back of my bike and wheeled us out of the alley.
Silver bullets and wolfbane were banned weapons in the werewolf world. Those trying to kill Theodore were no ordinary werewolves. They were probably sent by that mysterious organization...
My life was peaceful now. I didn't want to get dragged back into the conflicts of my past.
After some thought, I decided against taking Theodore straight to a hospital. Instead, I brought him to the medical lab at Frostveil University.
"Identification successful. Please proceed." The scanner glowed blue.
I entered the familiar space, flipped on the lights, and hoisted Theodore onto an anatomy table used by medical students. Then I went to the cabinet by the lab entrance, took out a surgical gown, and put it on.
Many instruments sat around the table, but addictive drugs like anesthesia were kept by the professors. I had no way to get my hands on any right now.
Well, Theodore was already out cold. He could probably handle the pain.
I swiftly pulled on surgical gloves and cut away the blood-soaked shirt.
The bullet was positioned terrifyingly close to his heart. One slip, and it would rupture.
I sterilized the scalpel and got to work removing the bullet.
The surgical light was blindingly white. The moment the blade cut into flesh, blood coated my fingertips. I felt a strange warmth from it.
"What are you doing?" A hoarse voice, tight with pain, startled me.
The cold, dominant pheromones of an Alpha King instantly pressed down on my senses in the air.
My breath hitched slightly, but my hands kept working. "Don't move if you want to live," I warned.
He probably understood how dire his condition was. He didn't ask anything else.
For the rest of the surgery, aside from a couple of low grunts at the start, he didn't make a single sound.
Theodore stayed conscious until the procedure was finished, then passed out again.
"Not bad willpower," I remarked, pulling off my gloves.
He was the Alpha of the Nightshade Pack, after all. His mental fortitude was strong enough to stay awake through surgery without anesthesia.
With the silver bullet wound dealt with, the last and most difficult problem remained—the wolfbane poison.
The toxin had practically fused with Theodore's blood. The only way to save him was to inject hybrid blood into the gland at the back of his neck.
I'd read about this antidote method in a medical text.
Hybrids, because of their human genes, were naturally immune to wolfbane. Their blood also had detoxifying properties.
However, injecting blood into the poisoned one's gland would amplify the agonizing clash of antidote and toxin several times in an instant.
The werewolf could fall into a frenzied state from the pain, turning into a mindless beast.
I'd come this far—no reason to stop now.
Besides, if Theodore died here, the Nightshade Pack would never let me go.
I decisively picked up a syringe, drew half a tube of my own blood, and called to Emma through our Mind Link.
I said, "Emma, buy me as much time as you can."
Elizabeth, we already used it once today! Using it again so soon will leave us weak! Emma's voice was anxious. She was clearly worried for me.
Emma's Time Freeze ability lasted only one minute.
So far, we'd tested that it could only be used once a day. If it went over a minute, my body would become weak and exhausted afterward, and Emma would recede into hiding.
But we could overcome difficulties. Through repeated practice, the duration we could manage had already lengthened a little.
"Don't worry, Emma. I believe our ability is improving," I reassured her.
With the prepared syringe in hand, I snapped my fingers.
Time Freeze—everything fell into an eerie silence.
I quickly injected the blood into the gland on Theodore's neck, counting the seconds silently.
Around fifteen seconds, Emma couldn't hold on any longer, and my own vision started to darken.
I immediately released the ability.
Theodore reacted at once. His chest heaved violently. Veins bulged on his neck. His eyes flew open in unconscious agony, and a strange, guttural roar tore from his throat.
It seemed even after surviving the initial, mind-rending pain, the battle between antidote and toxin was terrifying to behold.
But Theodore's willpower truly surprised me.
Until the very last second of the ordeal, he kept control. He didn't transform into a savage beast.
For a moment, I felt a genuine sense of respect for him.
