Chapter 1 — We're Done

Astrid Wood's POV:
When Hunter Black pinned me beneath him and kissed me, my heart surged with shock and joy.
The familiar scent of him overwhelmed me. My wolf, Natalie, nearly lost control—desperate to claim him, desperate for us to finally belong to each other.
But something about him tonight felt off.
In the three years since I became his Luna, Hunter had never once touched me. So why now?
Fighting Natalie's growing urge to mate, I forced myself to stay grounded.
But when Hunter deepened the kiss, prying my lips open and claiming me like a man possessed, I nearly lost all sense of reason.
Just before he stripped me bare and entered me, I gathered what was left of my reason and whispered, trembling, "Hunter ... Are you sure you want to mate with me?"
His breath was ragged. He leaned in, his voice low and husky against my ear. "Yes."
And then—with a cry as wild as a wolf's howl—he sank into me and bit down at the base of my neck, sinking in his sharp fangs.
A rush of ecstasy unlike anything I'd ever felt washed over me. Tears slipped from my eyes as I smiled through the overwhelming sensation.
After all these years, after Natalie had confirmed he was my destined mate, we had finally mated.
I cupped his face with all the love I had—and then I heard him mutter, soft and unconscious.
"Chani ... "
My body froze. Pain flared in the place where he had just marked me.
Chani. That was Chantal Farrell's nickname.
She was his childhood sweetheart. She'd been living overseas—until yesterday, when she returned to Ironclaw Pack.
She even had the nerve to text me.
"Astrid, I'm back. If you have any sense at all, you'll leave the pack.
"Hunter and I have always loved each other. Just because you've been his Luna over the last few years doesn't mean you've taken my place in his heart.
"You're just a poor little orphan. Why don't you crawl back to life as a rogue?
"You know he loves me. Even if he mates with you, I'm the one he'll be thinking about. You'll never be more than my substitute.
"Hurts, doesn't it?"
A substitute?
I am the rightful Luna of the Ironclaw Pack.
And more than that—I was Renna Deer, only daughter of the Alpha King, the supreme ruler of the Wolfkin on this continent.
I had hidden my identity and pretended to be a powerless, wolf-less nobody, all for the sake of a promise I made to my father.
As heiress to the Alpha King, I would never—never—be someone else's stand-in.
Beside me, Hunter kept murmuring her name—"Chani! Chani!"
The texts echoed through my head like cruel chants, each one a brutal reminder of just how deep I was in denial.
Tears welled up uncontrollably. My fists clenched, knuckles white as I fought the urge to let Natalie tear the place apart.
Hunter, the Alpha of Ironclaw Pack—one of the most powerful packs in the region—had always been ambitious. He'd made no secret of wanting to challenge my father's throne.
But because I loved him, I gave up everything. I buried Natalie and Renna. I stayed in his house willingly, devoted myself to being his Luna with everything I had.
But to his mother and sister, I was nothing more than the rogue his grandfather, Julius Black, had dragged back into the pack. They humiliated me constantly.
Even though I was Luna, they made sure Hunter ordered me to do every bit of dirty work—cleaning floors, scrubbing toilets—just like an Omega servant.
I endured it all because I didn't want to cause trouble for him.
Wasn't I humble enough for his love?
And yet, even the last scrap of my dignity had to be crushed underfoot.
I—daughter of the Alpha King, born to lead—reduced myself to nothing for a mate bond that was supposed to be sacred. And this is what I got in return.
I lay there that night, eyes wide open, unable to sleep.
...
The next morning, I felt Hunter stir behind me. With a heavy heart, I turned to face him.
I thought I was ready. But when he opened his eyes—wolf eyes blazing with rage and revulsion—I couldn't stop the shiver that ran through me.
"You really think drugging me into mating with you is going to make me want you?" he growled, tightening his grip around my wrist.
His expression was wild, like he might shift any second and tear out my throat.
Drug him?
I could barely breathe through the heartache. "Is that what you think I am?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Hunter didn't hesitate to sneer. "You manipulated my grandpa into pressuring the elders—had them claim I couldn't become Alpha unless I married you. So don't play the innocent now."
"You're a nobody—no name, no wolf. You're nothing compared with Chani."
Hearing him say something so cruel, so demeaning, all I felt was a dull, numbing pain in my chest.
So that's how low he thought of me.
If I had really wanted to drug him, I could've done it a long time ago. Why would I wait until now?
He didn't know me. Not even a little.
Everything I'd given him over the past three years—every ounce of love, loyalty, and sacrifice—it was all a joke.
Fighting back tears, I yanked my wrist free from his grasp and forced the words out, loud and clear.
"Hunter, we're done."

Chapter 2 — No Regrets

Astrid's POV:
"What did you say?"
Hunter frowned, clearly caught off guard by my words.
"You drugged me last night just to force me into mating with you," he said, his voice low and cutting. "And now you're standing here talking crazy about breaking our bond?"
I shot him a cold glance, barely keeping myself from unleashing the same powerful aura that pulsed around him.
After a moment, I calmed myself and quieted the unrest, Natalie. My voice came out steady. "Didn't you want to sever our bonds all along?
"You've always wanted out of this bond, haven't you?" I said flatly. "You only accepted me as your Luna because Julius forced you into this. But now that he's gone, no one's stopping you from making Chantal your mate. Isn't that what you've always wanted?"
Hunter's lips tightened as he gave me a long, unreadable look, like he didn't quite believe I was truly letting go of my Luna title.
I met his gaze without flinching. He scoffed, his voice sharp with disdain. "You better not regret this."
I let out a bitter laugh and shook my head. "I won't. Not now. Not ever."
He'd never understand how little being a Luna meant to me.
I gave up everything—my future, my identity, my birthright—for him. I threw all of that away because I loved him.
But now? I was finally wide awake.
"The only thing I regret," I said, voice low but clear, "is ever falling in love with you."
With that, I walked out the door.
...
That same morning, we went to the Council Hall to officially sign the documents dissolving our bond.
From now on, we had absolutely nothing to do with each other.
"Take care of yourself," he said coolly as I walked away.
When I turned around, he was already gone—vanished without a word, without even a glance back. Like I'd never mattered at all.
But I knew what that sarcastic tone truly meant.
To him, now that I had no Luna status, I was just another wolfless nobody—a disgrace in the eyes of the pack. There was no way someone like me could survive here.
But if he was going to be this heartless, then I had nothing left to hold me back. From this day forward, I wouldn't hesitate to stop him from challenging my father's place as Alpha King.
Father had always been cunning. In front of Hunter, I wasn't allowed to reveal I was the Alpha King's heiress.
I had to keep my wolf and my scent hidden, or Hunter's wolf might have sensed we're destined mates and fallen for me instantly.
But now ... maybe Father was right to make me wait.
As I reached the edge of the road, a sleek black stretch Bentley—limited edition—pulled up in front of me.
The scent from inside was familiar. I didn't move.
The door opened. Wilbur Pena, my father's most trusted Beta, stepped out, flanked by four elite wolf guards.
I raised my chin slightly, keeping my voice cool. "Well, that didn't take long. You sure have a way of getting news fast, don't you?"
Wilbur smiled warmly, bowing respectfully before speaking. "Ms. Renna, the three-year agreement between you and the Alpha has ended."
He paused, a fake regret passing across his face. "It seems he didn't fall in love with you without knowing your true identity.
"Which means," he added solemnly, "it's time for you to honor your promise to return home, resume your rightful place as the Alpha King's heiress, and shoulder the responsibility of peace and unity across all the packs of this continent."

Chapter 3 — Natalie Awakens Again

Astrid's POV:
I frowned, falling silent for a long time.
When I was 15, I was ambushed and left for dead. I lost my memory and became a rogue, wandering the outskirts of the Ironclaw Pack.
Even Natalie—my wolf who had awakened early at 13—fell into a deep sleep.
For years, I thought I was doomed to live as a powerless outcast, a loser without a wolf. A waste.
Then, by sheer chance, I saved an old man on the verge of death—Julius. He was the one who brought me back into the Ironclaw Pack.
At 18, Natalie stirred inside me once more.
Her strength didn't just help me recover my memories—it revealed the truth: Hunter was my destined mate.
I'd been in love with Hunter for years, and when I realized the bond was real, my heart soared.
I couldn't wait to tell the entire pack who I really was. But before I got the chance, my father reached out to me through mind-link.
He warned me that Hunter was ambitious—that he planned to challenge him for his throne. He might start a war. My father demanded I return home immediately.
I begged him to let me stay. Eventually, we made a deal: for three years, I'd keep my identity a secret. I'd prove that Hunter could fall in love with me purely—as a girl with no wolf, no status, nothing. Just me.
And if I could also convince Hunter to give up his ambition, my father would call off his plans to invade Ironclaw Pack.
Julius found out who I really was before he died. To preserve peace, he supported the match and asked Hunter to take me as his Luna.
He promised that once Hunter truly fell in love with me—and my father formally approved of him—I could reveal my identity myself.
So for three years, I swallowed my pride, set aside my dignity as a royal, and did everything I could to win Hunter's heart. But he never cared. Not even once.
Looking back now, those three years feel like a tragic waste—wasted on someone who never loved me.
"Alpha misses you dearly," Wilbur pleaded softly. Please, just come home with me," Wilbur pleaded. "Don't stay mad at him. He—"
"Wilbur," I interrupted coldly, the bitterness in my chest threatening to spill over.
I couldn't forget the woman now by my father's side—his new Luna. The thought alone made my skin crawl.
"He has her now," I said flatly. "And this family doesn't need me. I still have things to take care of here. I'm not leaving."
I'd been secretly investigating who was behind my memory loss for the past two years. The trail had led me back to my family—but I still didn't know exactly who was responsible.
Right now, they were hiding in the shadows, and I was out in the open. If I returned now, I'd be walking right into danger.
And honestly, I couldn't bear to see that witch's face. Not yet.
Wilbur sighed. "So the Alpha was right. You're still upset with him. That's why you won't come back."
He reached into his pocket and respectfully handed me a sleek, obsidian-colored card. "Here's your black platinum card. The 30 billion is still untouched."
Then, with a subtle wave, a warrior behind him stepped forward and handed me a folder.
"Alpha said you don't have to return now. But he wants you to take over the Barren Pack—the one neighboring Ironclaw—so it doesn't fall under Ironclaw control. You're to raise their economy by at least five percent.
"He also said, if you refuse, the Blacks might not end up so lucky."
His words were cloaked in formality, but the threat was sharp and clear. My hands clenched at my sides. I had to force myself not to give in to Natalie's instinct to take over and silence him for good.
Before Julius died, I promised him I'd protect his family. I couldn't let anything happen to the Blacks.
My father knew that. He didn't even use it to force me home—he used it to push me toward the Barren Pack.
What game is he playing now? Fine. Let's see what he really wants.
"Alright," I said coolly. "Just as he wishes."
I signed my name across the bottom of the contract, then took the card from Wilbur. The thing was smooth and cold in my hand—solid black with gold trim.
Looking at the card's jet-black shine, I couldn't help but shake my head at the absurdity of it all.
Just minutes ago, I had less than ten dollars to my name. Not even enough for a cab ride.
And now, with the stroke of a pen, I had my title, my fortune, and my power back.
The next step? I'd head back to the house I once shared with Hunter, collect every last thing that belonged to me, and bring my time with the Ironclaw Pack to a clean and final end.
