Chapter 1

I’m pregnant.
I'd spent the entire afternoon cooking and decorating the house for our anniversary dinner tonight. Outside, the pack howled and cheered as they prepared for tonight's full moon shift.
I looked up at the wall clock and sighed, he should've been home an hour ago.
My phone buzzed on the counter, and I grabbed it, expecting my husband to say he was on his way.
"Leo, where are you? Dinner's getting cold, and I have something amazing to tell you—"
"I'm not coming home." He sounded irritated. "Work's too busy right now."
"But it's our anniversary. And the Lycan King isn't arriving until later tonight. Can't you just—"
"Jane, I'm trying to secure my position as Alpha King. The other alphas are backing me, but the rogues won't support me because they think I'm too cruel. I need to focus on winning them over, not sitting around eating dinner."
Today, the mighty Lycan King Stefan was set to arrive to our pack. As per my husband's application to become alpha king, it was the duty of the lycan king to choose. Leo's pack is a small ordinary pack near the capital, we're surrounded by 12 other packs, each with different alphas. We have a population of about 3000 wolves.
Lycan King Stefan runs the capital. His pack has more than 90,000 wolves. He rules over us all, while every alpha and beta bow to him. However, he is still Lycan. Werewolf law dictates that wolves are to be ruled by an alpha king, who answers to the Lycan King. But since the alpha king and queen were murdered eight years ago, Lycann King Stefan took charge of things.
I bit my lip and stared at the candles I'd spent so long arranging. "I know this is important to you, but just for one hour, can't we—"
The line went dead.
He hung up on me. I took a breath and dialed again, but before I could press call, the world exploded.
An explosion rocked the pack house, the blast threw me backward. I slammed into the wall, and a massive cupboard crashed down on top of me. The house was burning, and I was in pain.
"Luna! Luna Hall, where are you?" Pack members rushed into the burning pack house to save their Luna.
"Luna, can you hear me? Are you hurt?"
I blinked up at the pack warriors, my vision swam. My ears were ringing, and everywhere hurt. My pack warriors pulled the cabinet off and carried me outside.
“The rogues planted the bomb to disrupt the upcoming meeting with the Lycan King.’’ One of my warriors said.
Then suddenly, I hear a familiar voice once we get outside. "Get the pack doctor! Someone help her! My mate is hurt!"
I turned toward his voice and froze.
It was my husband.
"Save my wife! She's my true mate! Someone get a doctor now!"
My husband, Alpha Leo, was carrying woman in his arms while he cried in panic: “Save my wife.’’
Wasn’t he supposed to be at work?
"Alpha, please." One of the warriors gestured at me. "Luna Jane is badly hurt. She's in critical condition. We need to prioritize—"
"Leo, it hurts," the woman whimpered.
"I don't care about Jane!" Leo snarled at the warrior. "Save my mate. She's the woman who matters the most to me."
I stood there with blood dripping down my face and my leg cut, and I watched my husband hold another woman like she was the only thing worth saving.
"Did you hear what the Alpha just said?" someone whispered behind me.
"He's been sleeping in the west wing for years. Luna Jane isn't even allowed in that part of the pack house."
"I heard he's had a mistress the entire time. Eight years, right under her nose."
"That's so sad, she never knew."
I felt my entire world shattering, but what hurt worse was watchin my own son run down the stairs to cry for the other wman.
“Mommy, will you be okay?’’ Little Ryan, my son, asked the woman.
My heart crushed, andI grabbed Leo’ wrist.
"Don't leave me here like this. I'm pregnant, Leo. I'm pregnant with your baby."
He stared down at my hand like I was something filthy. Then he yanked his arm away.
"Don't touch my daddy!" Ryan shoved me, and I stumbled backward. "Joana is my real mommy, not you!"
Joana. My best friend. The one who vanished eight years ago without a word. The one who didn't show up to my wedding and never told me why.
Leo stepped into the ambulance, and the doors slammed shut. Seconds later, he drove away, leaving me there.
Dizziness overtook me, and I collapsed.
When I came to, I was in the hospital. The pack doctor stood beside my bed.
"Luna Hall, you're awake."
I sat up fast "My baby. Is my baby okay?"
She looked away. "I'm sorry. We couldn't save the pregnancy. You were unconscious for two hours, but—"
"No." My voice broke. "No, you're lying. You have to be lying."
"I'm so sorry, Luna."
I grabbed my phone from the bedside table and dialed Leo's number with shaking hands. It rang and rang and rang. No answer. I tried again. Nothing.
A wheelchair sat in the corner of the room. I dragged myself into it and ignored the doctor's protests as I wheeled out into the hallway. Leo's scent hit me the second I left the room. My wolf stirred, urging me to follow the scent.
I tracked him through the pack hospital, past the emergency ward, past the regular rooms, all the way to the VIP section. His scent stopped at a closed door.
My wolf senses enabled me to hear the full conversation without straining.
Leo, my husband, was speaking inside. "Joana, you need to rest. The doctor said the baby's fine, but you need to be careful."
"What about Jane?" My best friend sounded… almost sympathetic. "She was hurt too, wasn't she? Are you going to check on her?"
The Alpha laughed. "Jane? Why would I waste my time checking on her?"
"She's still your wife, Leo."
"She's nothing." He growls. "You're Ryan's real mother, Joana. Jane doesn't even know I killed her real baby and swapped him for Ryan. All these years, she's been raising my son like he was hers. You deserve a carefree life while Jane deserves to suffer. You're the woman I love, my true mate. Jane is just..." He paused, and as if trying to find the correct word. "A nanny."
I closed my eyes, and tears run down my face. I almost died giving birth to Ryan. I spent every penny I'd saved renovating and helping my husband’s ambition to become alpha king. I gave up seven years of medical school because Leo told me I had to choose between being a doctor and being his wife. I chose him. I gave him everything, and this was what I got in return.
They all laughed: my son, my best friend and my husband.
The family I thought I had never existed.
As I wheeled myself back to my room, two nurses walked past, drowning in conversation.
"Did you hear what the Alpha did? He pulled Dr. Stevens out of an emergency surgery just to check on his mate's broken finger."
"That's so romantic. He loves her that much."
"I know, right? Imagine loving someone so fiercely that nothing else matters."
They giggled and disappeared around the corner.
I stopped wheeling. My hands froze on the chair. Dr. Stevens had been operating on me. He'd been trying to save my baby when Leo dragged him away to check on Joana's broken finger. A broken finger. My baby died because of a broken finger.
I wheeled into my room and pulled myself back onto the bed.
My wolf growled inside me, furious. "I have watched you bend over backwards for eight years to please this alpha. Will you still submit now that he's chosen another over you?"
I didn't answer her.
The door opened, and Leo walked in with Ryan behind him.
Leo acted concerned the second he saw me. He rushed to my bedside and fluffed the pillows behind my head, adjusting them like he actually cared.
"Jane, thank God you're awake. I was so worried about you." He turned to Ryan and smiled. "Son, go get your mommy some water. She needs to stay hydrated."
Ryan nodded and ran to the small table in the corner where a pitcher sat.
Leo sat on the edge of my bed and took my hand. His touch made my skin crawl. "How are you feeling? The doctors said you were in bad shape, but you're strong. You'll recover."
I said nothing.
Ryan brought the cup of water and held it out to me. "Here, Mommy. Drink this."
I turned my head away and stared at the wall.
"Jane." Leo's voice had an edge now. "Don't be childish. Ryan's trying to help you, you're hurting his feelings."
I kept staring at the wall. The words sat heavy in my chest, pushing against my ribs until I couldn't hold them in anymore.
"I want to break our mate bond. I reject you, Alpha Leonard Anderson, as my mate."
The room fell into stunned silence.

Chapter 2

Leo came close to me. "Did you hit your head? Are you serious right now?"
"I reject you," I repeated, but Ryan cut me off.
"Mommy, no!" Ryan's voice cracked, and tears spilled down his cheeks. "Why are you being so mean to Daddy? He's been so worried about you!"
I looked at the boy I'd raised for seven years. The boy I'd stayed up all night with when he was sick. The boy I'd taught to read and write and tie his shoes. The boy who wasn't mine.
"Stop crying," Leo said to Ryan, patting his head. "Your mother's just confused. She'll be fine once she rests."
"Is this about Joana?" Leo turned back to me, his expression hardening. "Because if it is, you're being ridiculous."
"Aunt Joana is my godmother, Mom." Ryan wiped his tears and glared at me. "She's just Dad's friend. You don't need to be jealous of her."
My fist clenched, my patience wore thin.
“Leo, I reject you…’’
“Ryan, give us a moment.’’ My husband ordered our son, and he obeyed. When the door shut, and we were all alone, Leo came at me.
He moved with the speed and majesty of an alpha, in seconds, he held me by my neck against the hospital wall.
“I reject your rejection!’’ Leo growled at me, face pressed to mine. “You think you’ll just wake up one day and get rid of me?’’
He was whispering now, using his alpha voice. His eyes were red and his alpha aura was slipping out. Every alpha has a power within them that makes lesser wolves bow, a power that makes everyone submit.
They weren’t supposed to abuse it, not like Leo was doing now.
I struggled in his hands, trying to breath only to get choked again. I was weak, injured, still recovering from a miscarriage and a broken leg.
“You belong to me, Jane Hall, you’ve belonged to me from the second I laid my eyes on you. From the second the bond between us was established by the moon goddess. You are my mate, you cannot reject me!’’
Leo steps back, letting me fall on the ground with a broken thud. He steps back and walks to the door, he doesn’t turn to me, he just leaves.
When the door closes, I’m left on the floor crying and shaking.
I reached for my phone on the bedside table and frantically dial one number. It rang twice before someone picked up.
"Jane?" He sounded shocked. "Is this really you?"
"Alpha Marcus," I said quietly.
"I've kept this number working for eight years waiting for you to call. I never thought you actually would."
"I’m rejecting Alpha Leo as my true mate, I want to dissolve our bond and leave him. I want another chance."
There was a pause, then a long exhale. "Finally."
The door opens suddenly, it’s Ryan, pretending to check on me again. He doesn’t enter, he stands by the door where my husband has been talking to my doctor. My eyes meet Leo’s, and a sick smile plasters his face.
Alpha Marcus speaks on the phone again:
"The entire world has moved on," Marcus said. “Everyone's forgotten who you really are, Jane Hall. The lost princess, the heir to the Alpha King's throne."
Eight years ago, I was the most carefully guarded secret in the werewolf world. While other royals paraded through galas and political summits, I was raised behind palace walls in absolute secrecy. My father groomed me to inherit the throne, but he made sure no one outside our inner circle ever saw my face. The enemies of the crown were ruthless, and an exposed heir was a dead heir. So I trained in combat, studied pack law, and learned to rule a kingdom that didn't even know I existed.
Then the rogues launched their attack. They infiltrated our water supply with a poison so lethal that most alphas who drank it were dead within hours. My parents didn't stand a chance, and I watched them die knowing I should have been strong enough to stop it. I was supposed to protect them, but I failed.
When I met Leo weeks after burying my family, I was drowning in guilt and grief. He had no idea who I was or what I'd lost. He saw a broken girl who needed saving, and I let him believe that version of me. I threw myself into research, determined to create a vaccine for the poison that had stolen everything from me. It took months of failed attempts and sleepless nights, but I finally cracked it. The soup I fed Leo every morning wasn't just some traditional recipe. It was the cure I'd developed, infused with my essence to strengthen his immunity. I made sure the rogues would never be able to poison him the way they poisoned my parents.
I abandoned my surgical career because he asked me to. I became Luna of his small territory pack when I was meant to rule an entire kingdom. The Alpha King throne he was so desperate to claim, the position he'd spent years rallying support for, that seat belonged to me. It had been mine since the day I was born.
"The rejection only takes hold if he accepts it. If he never does, then you’ll remain bound to that man for the rest of your life. You will always belong to him, unless you server your bond.’’
“But Leo would never reject me, he’s convinced he owns me.’’
"Then we raise a case to the Council of Elders and the High Priestess. You bring forward your evidence, every cruel thing Lewis has ever done to you. Justify why he has broken and betrayed the sacred bond of fated mates. Make the High Priestess side with you. Only she has the blessings of the Moon Goddess to sever a bond against an alpha's will."
I shook my head, I thought about it. “It could work.’’ I answered.
“But Jane,’’ Alpha Marcus stops me, “You don’t have too long.’’
“What do you mean?’’
“Your parents were murdered eight years ago. Werewolf tradition dictates that as long as the heir remains alive, they will be given a grace period of 96 full moons.’’
He pauses, like he’s nervous. The mighty Alpha Marcus thorne, nervous?
“But… 96 full moons mean eight years.’’ I whispered.
"Yes Jane. Eight years are over. The Council of Elders have already made their decision. The Lycan King must choose the next Alpha King one month from now. If you don't sever your bond by then, announcing your return helps nothing. As long as you remain tied and fated to your husband, he has every right to take all you have."
“He’ll get my throne.’’ I gasped, eyes wide.
Silence stretched between us as those implications sat on my shoulders. Only this morning, I was a happy housewife, Luna to a regular pack, and personal maid/fucktoy to my cruel alpha husband. Now, I sit on a hospital bed after a miscarriage, no longer Ryan’s mother, no longer a happy wife, just…. A nanny, a discarded wife and a broken Luna.
"One month," I repeated. “I’ll get it done.’’
"Welcome back, Alpha."
I hung up and stared at Leo in the hallway. He was still talking to the doctor like nothing had changed. For eight years, he thought he married a weak and helpless she-wolf with nothing to offer. For eight years, he believed I was lucky to have him.
He and Ryan walk into the room again, "Have you stopped acting crazy now?’’ My husband asks me.
“Mom,’’ Ryan starts, “I’m hurt too, and you didn’t even care. Joana was the only one asking if I was okay.’’
He stomps his little foot down in anger, “And you’re always poking mme with those needles. You force Dad to drink that awful soup you make! Your cooking is horrible. Not line Joana, her food is good!’’
He looks down at me, tears in his pretty eyes. And then he utters words that feel like knives, “I wish you were half as good as Joana, maybe then I’d want you as my only mommy.’’
But Ryan didn’t know the needles he hated so much were shots that kept his allergies under control.
He didn’t know that ‘soup’ was herbal medicine that save Leo from dying of the alpha plague. That the awful soup was in fact a vaccine that made Leo a stronger alpha and got rid of his own allergies.
And I…silently, had given everything.
A new voice pierces my mind, no doubt my husband speaking through the mindlink.
“You will never leave me, Jane. You have no one else.” My husband brags in my head. “ You have no family but us, nothing to your name and nowhere to go. Your only purpose is being my mate. And as my mate, you will take everything I give you with a smile and thanks. You will become nanny to my children and worship me everyday like you’ve done for eight years. The mate bond is forever, so get rid of this silly notion, that I would ever accept your rejection. You’re mine no matter what."
My fist clenched around the phone, and I stared straight into Leo's eyes.
My wolf growled deep in my chest. "I'll make him pay."

Chapter 3

I sat in my wheelchair outside the hospital entrance, staring at the empty parking lot.
Alpha Marcus sent me a text:
"I'm five minutes away. Stay put."
I typed back a response and set my phone in my lap. The streets outside the hospital gates were filled with shouting, a crowd was standing in a circle yelling.
"Someone call an ambulance!"
"She's not breathing right!"
I turned my wheelchair toward the commotion. My body moved before my brain caught up. I wheeled myself toward the crowd, ignoring the sharp pain in my ribs. When I got close enough to see through the bodies, my heart dropped.
A little girl lay on the pavement, convulsing. Foam gathered at the corners of her mouth, and her skin had turned blue. She was dying.
I threw myself out of the wheelchair, bruising my already injured leg in the process, but I did not care.
"Let me through! I'm a doctor!"
The crowd parted. I reached the girl's side and pressed my fingers to her neck. Her pulse was erratic, and her breathing came in short, desperate wheezes.
"Does anyone know this child?" I looked up at the faces around us. "Does she have allergies?"
No one answered.
I scanned the ground and spotted a silver needle lying near an overturned food container. The tip was stained dark.
"She was pricked by a contaminated needle." I looked at the crowd. "I need antihistamines. The strongest you can find. There's a pharmacy two blocks down. Go now!"
A young man took off running.
I rolled the girl onto her side so she wouldn't choke. Her eyes were glassy with terror even through her semi-consciousness.
"You're going to be okay, sweetheart." I whispered, brushing her hair back. "I promise."
A man pushed through the crowd, tall with storm-gray eyes filled with panic. He dropped to his knees beside her.
"Teri. Oh God, Teri."
"Is she your daughter?"
He nodded. "She has severe allergies. I was watching her, she didn't eat anything."
"She was pricked by a needle, probably coated with whatever she's allergic to."
The young man came sprinting back with a pharmacy bag. I grabbed it and crushed four antihistamine tablets, mixing them with water. I lifted the girl's head.
"Teri, I need you to swallow this. It's going to help."
Her eyes flickered to mine, and she swallowed. I held her head steady while her father watched with clenched fists.
Ten minutes passed. Then her convulsions slowed. Her breathing evened out. The blue tint faded from her skin, and her eyes opened.
"Daddy?"
The man gathered her into his arms, she turned her head and looked at me.
"Who are you?"
I smiled, even though my leg hurt worse than before. "Just someone who wanted to help."
An ambulance from the hospital pulled up with sirens blaring. Paramedics jumped out, and the crowd surged forward. I dragged myself back toward my wheelchair and someone helped me into it. By the time I looked back, the man and his daughter were being loaded into the ambulance.
His gray eyes met mine across the parking lot, and something passed between us.
Then he was gone.
A car pulled up, and Alpha Marcus jumped out. "Jane! What happened?"
"Just help me into the car."
He lifted me and settled me into the passenger seat. "You threw yourself out of a wheelchair to help someone, didn't you?"
"A little girl was dying, Alpha Marcus."
He shook his head. "You're just like your father." He started the car. "Now let's get you home before you pass out."
The drive took twenty minutes. When we pulled up to the mansion, I stared at it through the windshield. Three stories of stone and glass, lit up against the night sky.
"Your father built this during the last year of his life," Marcus said quietly. "He wanted to make sure you always had somewhere to come home to."
Marcus helped me inside and gave me a quick tour. We ended up in the living room, and I collapsed onto a couch. Marcus turned on the television while he examined my leg.
A news anchor was talking about pack politics. Then the story changed, and Leo's face appeared on the screen.
"Breaking news tonight: Alpha Leo Hall of Wayward Pack has been admitted to urgent care after experiencing severe symptoms. Sources say his condition deteriorated rapidly after consuming a meal prepared by his mate, Joana Matthews."
I started laughing.
"What's so funny?" Marcus asked.
"He ate something spicy. Joana must have cooked something spicy for dinner."
"I don't understand."
"Leo has terrible stomach issues. Spicy food triggers them just like allergies trigger Ryan's reactions. I've been managing his diet for eight years." I wiped my eyes. "She put him in the hospital in a few hours."
Marcus snorted. "The mighty Alpha Leo Hall, defeated by dinner."
"Without me managing his diet, without the vaccine I've been feeding him every day, he's going to suffer." I felt a flicker of satisfaction. "And when he realizes I was the only thing keeping him alive, it'll destroy him."
"Your expertise as a doctor is the reason he survived while other alphas died from the rogue poison," Marcus said. "Now that he's thrown you away, he'll experience what real vulnerability feels like."
"There's something else you should know." Marcus pulled out his phone. "Your husband has been writing letters to your late parents.. I mean to the Alpha King's palace. Monthly letters full of complaints."
"What kind of complaints?"
"He's furious that eight years after your parents died, no new Alpha King has been crowned. He calls it a disgrace that the palace sits empty and unoccupied." Marcus looked up at me. "He has no idea that a new Alpha King cannot be crowned while the rightful heir still lives."
The irony was almost funny. Leo had spent years positioning himself as a candidate for Alpha King, never knowing his wife was the reason the throne remained empty.
"He'll figure it out eventually," I said.
"Let him. By then it'll be too late."
My phone rang. I frowned at the unknown number. "Hello?"
"Ms. Hall?" A deep, commanding voice spoke out. "This is Lycan King Lucas Storm. We met briefly tonight."
My heart skipped. "Your Majesty."
"My daughter isn't feeling well. She started having symptoms again, and my personal doctor is trapped in the storm. The roads are flooded." He paused, and I heard a child crying. The king sounded panicked. "Would you be willing to see her? I can bring her to you. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't urgent."
He was offering to come to me instead of demanding I travel to him. Most alphas would never show that kind of consideration.
"Of course. I'll send you my address."
"Thank you, Ms. Hall. We'll be there soon."
I looked at Marcus. "The Lycan King is bringing his daughter here."
"Here? He's coming here?"
"Help me to the door. I need to be ready."
Marcus helped me hobble to the entrance hall. We waited, and every minute felt like an hour. Rain pounded against the windows, and thunder rumbled.
Finally, half an hour later, there was a knock.
I dragged my cast-wrapped leg forward and pulled the door open.
Lycan King Lucas Storm stood on my doorstep, drenched. Rain dripped from his hair and ran down his face, soaking through his clothes. But his daughter was cradled in his arms, wrapped in his jacket to keep her dry. Her face was pale, her eyes closed. She looked blue, just like before.
He looked at me with those storm-gray eyes, and his voice cracked. "Please save my daughter."
Then he dropped to his knees in front of me, this powerful Lycan king kneeling in the rain with his unconscious child in his arms.
My heart broke.
My wolf stirred inside me, rising up with overwhelming force. Her voice rumbled through my mind.
"Mate."
